RE: [Bug 799290] Re: wireless repeatedly connects and disconnects with kernel 3.0

2012-04-02 Thread Luke
This bug no longer exists in recent 3.2 kernels, and a kernel bisect exceeds my
current experience and skills. I do NOT have basic git skills, sorry about
that.

As I said before, the disconnects STOPPED when I started blacklisting
the acer-wmi module, which others reported as causing the problem. At
first, that invoked another, previously reported bug in the form of very
slow wireless speed, but that problem turned out to be router-specific
and as 3.2 kernels developed accurred with fewer aqnd fewer routers, now
appearing in NO cases.

For 3.2 kernels, this but is FIXED so far as the Acer Aspire with Intel
Atom N450 is concerned. If it still exists for anyone else, and/or for
purposes of debugging the acer-wmi module, someone still experiencing
the bug and familiar with building kernels from git would need to carry
about the prcedures below.

Luke, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. The
next step is to perform a kernel bisect to identify the offending
commit. Could you please do so following
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

 ** Description changed:

   Binary package hint: linux-image-3.0-0-generic-pae

Beginning with the installation of the version 3.0 kernels, network-
manager-gnome's nm-applet began repeatedly connecting and disconnecting
 - from wireless networks. The behavior is similar to what would be observed
 - if all wireless connections were barely strong enough to connect and too
 - weak to stay connected. Network-manager gnome's nm-applet still reports
 - correct signal strengh, but fails to stay connected. This occurs without
 - regard for rather Unity or gnome-shell is running at the time. At first
 - I blamed network-manager-gnome, only to find that it hadn't changes, nor
 - had the other networking programs. Suspecting new kernel drivers, I
 - decided to try a reboot with the previous kernel, and was back online.
 + from wireless networks. Network-manager gnome's nm-applet still reports

 - Booting from kernel 2.6.39-3-generic-pae instead of a 3.0 kernel stops
 - the problem and wireless networks then remain connected and behave
 - normally. Either the wireless driver in the kernel has a problem or it's
 - interface with network-manager-gnome changed enough to require changes
 - in that package, no idea which. No problems with the wired connections
 - used by my second video-editing computer downtown, both video editors

2012-04-02 Thread Luke
I just ran sudo modprobe acer-wmi and that was enough to bring back the
repeated disconnections. So was removing acer-wmi from blacklist.conf and
rebooting. To make Ubuntu work for these machine
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf could blacklist acer-wmi by default.

RE: [Bug 799290] Re: wireless repeatedly connects and disconnects with kernel 3.0

2012-03-10 Thread Luke
Probably FIXED:

With Linux 3.2.0-17 or 3.2.0-18, and with acer-wmi blacklisted, the slow
connection speed seems to be resolved in connections to most routers at
libraries, etc. Still keeping 2.6.38-8-generic around for any surprises
for now. Blacklisting acer-wmi stopped the disconnects as stated before.

RE: [Bug 799290] Re: wireless repeatedly connects and disconnects with kernel 3.0

2012-01-02 Thread Luke
There's an additional development here:
blacklisting acer-wmi stops the constant disconection and reconnection but the
wireless then runs very slow.
Here is a link to another user's advice on this, with a different machine,
Ubuntu 11:10 being the affected version, this Kernel 3.0 and above again:
http://www.lamnk.com/blog/computer/fixing-ubuntu-11-10-oneiric-ocelot-wireless-problem-with-atheros-ar9285-and-ralink-rt3090/
On some machines this seemed to fix all the problems, on mine it left the
wireless staying connected but almost uselessly slow, a problem that may have
existed before but beenundetectable due to the constant disconnections.
There are bugs filed against ubuntu for this
blacklisting acer-wmi does not harm performance on 2.6 kernels on my netbook,
so I left the blaxcklist in place

RE: [Bug 799290] Re: wireless repeatedly connects and disconnects with kernel 3.0

2011-10-24 Thread Luke
No it would not unless there has been some change pertaining to this
particular driver, in which case I would be willing to but it might take
several days before I can get to it. .
I can no longer take responsability for testing Oneiric kernels in the laptop,
as I have moved it to Precise, have a very, very slow connection at home, and
on the road do not have time for all the multiple reboots necessary to test
kernels for two different versions of Ubuntu. The only Oneiric partitions I now
have are backups, usable but never updated.
On top of all else every kernel or initramfs update means rerunning a series
of scripts for boot integrity checking and hash storage (against the evil
maid password keylogger) on these encrypted machines, whose boot partitions
are not even mounted in normal use. In short, testing every kernel in the
laptop when I can only get them on the road and can never actually use them
because of this unresolved bug has been too much work, so I can only test the
versions in Precise which come in with the rest of the packages unless there
has been a change to the driver for the wireless card used in this machine .
On top of that I tend to forget things and on the road would be likely to
forget to download a kernel form a differnt repo for testing. It is probably
impossible to download it from where I am right now, on a connection with
speeds in the 5kB/sec range.I was able to get the changelog, and only see two
wireless references: one to Lenovo (not this machine) the other to a beacon
when updating regulatory information, which does not happen when a connection
is active. The nature of thebug, as I have said before, seems to be one of
breaking connection on refresh, so some way of preventing the network manager
from refreshing the connection information might be a workaround.

At this point, it would literally be easier for me to trash that
wireless card than to deal with this if the old kernel becomes unusable
with a newer version of Ubuntu.

I just saw that this is the newest existing kernel and a 3.1 version like what
is in precise, set it to download. Should take an hour or so. Will try it in
the netbook when and if the downlaod finishes.

2011-10-24 Thread Luke
Still doesn't work, after a 1 hour download on a slow connection I got it
installed in the Acer netbook, no change in results in GNOME, in Icewm with
wicd, wicd asked for permission to connect to the wireless card, which could
solve a differnt problem with wicd but on this slow connection I focussed on
testing the ability to connect in GNOME with network-manager, got the same
disconnects as before.

2011-10-24 Thread Luke
Disconnect under load problems in wicd/Icewm too.
This varies frome kernel to kernel, some almost working, others same as in
GNOME, one varient some time back (listed in an earlier poswt on this bug
report) would not recognize the card.
Some change was made in the transition to the very first 3.0 kernel that broke
the wireless driver for the acer netbook-and it has now gotten all the way to
the Oneiric release and beyond with nobody having been able to find it.

[Bug 799290] Re: wireless repeatedly connects and disconnects with kernel 3.0

2011-10-21 Thread Luke
Still present in kernel 3.1.0-1-generic-pae

Worse in network-manager than in Wicd, which is almost usable with this
version. Wicd peformance seems to sometime get better, sometimes worse.
I have just about given up on anyone fixing this, and hope no newer
version of Ubuntu becomes incapable of running with the older
2.38.8-generic kernel my netbook requires to be usable in Oneiric or (as
of now) precise. I do not want to have to either not keep the netbook
on the same OS as my other machines, or use it only with an external USB
wireless device, of which I have one that works but is used with one of
the desktops. This goes double with all the usb modeswitching stuff now
on the market.

[Bug 799290] Re: wireless repeatedly connects and disconnects with kernel 3.0

2011-10-08 Thread Brad Figg
Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during
any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all.
Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request
further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel
than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test
again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still
exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to
Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from
Incomplete to Fix Released.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

[Bug 799290] Re: wireless repeatedly connects and disconnects with kernel 3.0

2011-08-11 Thread Luke
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected oneiric running-unity

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: linux-image-3.0-0-generic-pae

Beginning with the installation of the version 3.0 kernels, network-
manager-gnome's nm-applet began repeatedly connecting and disconnecting
from wireless networks. The behavior is similar to what would be observed
if all wireless connections were barely strong enough to connect and too
weak to stay connected. Network-manager gnome's nm-applet still reports
correct signal strengh, but fails to stay connected. This occurs without
regard for rather Unity or gnome-shell is running at the time. At first
I blamed network-manager-gnome, only to find that it hadn't changes, nor
had the other networking programs. Suspecting new kernel drivers, I
decided to try a reboot with the previous kernel, and was back online.

Booting from kernel 2.6.39-3-generic-pae instead of a 3.0 kernel stops
the problem and wireless networks then remain connected and behave
normally. Either the wireless driver in the kernel has a problem or it's
interface with network-manager-gnome changed enough to require changes
in that package, no idea which. No problems with the wired connections
used by my second video-editing computer downtown, both video editors
being AMD Phenom II x4/785 chipset machines with 4GB ram, hence the pae
kernels used all all copies of my OS install.

This occurs on my Acer Aspire 1 netbook with the Intel Atom N450 and
associated chipset. The pae kernels are used because this machine
downloads all packages bound for the offline video editing comp0uter
  with 4GB of ram.

This bug is still present with linux-image-3.0-1-generic-pae, just tested it
today

[Bug 799290] Re: wireless repeatedly connects and disconnects with kernel 3.0

2011-07-19 Thread Luke
I have no internet at home, rely on wireless at public spots to connect.
I cannot hold a connection to the wireless with any 3.0 kernel long
enough to send anything.

Also, I do not have apport installed in any of my machines because the packages
harvested from the laptop are used to install the same system in the offline
AMD 4-core, from which automated bug reports cannot be sent. The nature of
alphas is that a lot of things crash, and I got sick of constant crash reports
that I was unable to do anything with from dozens of programs.

If nobody else is able to investigate this and this bug persists to
release, I will either have to use old kernels or external wireless in
the laptop-as will anyone else with the Acer Aspire one with Intel Atom
N450. Sorry about this, but I just don't have the resources to send
automated reports on this bug. Is there a manual way to do this using
strace or something?
