[Bug 309779] [NEW] ABBYY FineReader 7 won't save to multiple files.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: wine I'm running the ABBYY FineReader 7.0 try-and-buy under wine. The installer package is here: http://www.soft32.com/download/63-83213-1/FR70pro_eng.exe FineReader allows page data to be saved in several formats, including one page per file. This works under Windows. However, when trying to save the text output of a batch under wine, even if one page per file mode is selected, the text is output entirely to a single file. This is reproducible both with wine 1.0.0-1ubuntu4~hardy1 on Hardy and 1.0.1-0ubuntu2 on Intrepid. ** Affects: wine (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- ABBYY FineReader 7 won't save to multiple files. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/309779 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 304659] Re: rdiff-backup crashed with IOError in read()
Right, /sys shouldn't be backed-up. :-) So, why did 1.1.16 pass over this problem, and 1.2.2 choke? In 1.1.16, it failed to read any information about the files in /sys, and thus skipped over it. By 1.2.2, some bugs had been fixed to make rdiff-backup better able to read information about troublesome files (Unicode files, for example, often present the same error codes as the /sys files give when reading the file metadata). The strange thing is, when you try to get information about files in /sys, you get an Invalid file (EINVAL) error code, which rdiff-backup has long been able to handle. But when you try to actually read some of the files in /sys, then you get a Connection timed out (ETIMEDOUT) error, which rdiff-backup didn't know about. Based on your bug report, I added handling for the ETIMEDOUT error to CVS the other day. Rdiff- backup 1.2.3 will be able to pass through the /sys directory, just as 1.1.16 did. So, the correct solution is to follow the good practice of not backing- up /sys (just like /proc or /dev/shm, etc.), but rdiff-backup will no longer be tripped-up starting again with 1.2.3. [Bug 309778] [NEW] KDE always associates *.jar with the zip mime type
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: krusader Krusader, dolphin and other KDE applications incorrectly map the application/x-jar mime type. Gnome and XFCE and other non-KDE applications correctly interpret *.jar as application/x-jar, but not KDE. I have followed all of the KDE instructions including: http://www.krusader.org/handbook/faq_usage.html#faqu_jar http://www.krusader.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=9166 And have scoured my mimelnk and other *.desktop files and have verified that *.jar is only associated with Java and never zip. KDE incorrectly treats *.jar as application/zip anyways. I have verified that krusader has no jar or java-archive or any thing else in the karc protocol and have verified that *.jar is mapped correctly under the KDE4 system settings application (file mapping). KDE still stubbornly treats *.jar as a zip file. As a result I cannot launch java applications packaged as jar files without running it by hand. I have exhausted google and all other resources, no one has replied to my launchpad question (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/51806) in over a month and have come to the conclusion that it is probably a bug. Public bug reported: I'm running the lpia build of Ubuntu from ports.ubuntu.com. software- properties (-gtk) doesn't recognize this as a valid Ubuntu repository, however, and so under Ubuntu Software all checkboxes are left empty. If I check any of these boxes, it will add the mirrors to my sources.list, however since these mirrors do not contain the lpia architecture, I just get a bunch of errors when I update. I realize the ports repository isn't official however it would be nice if there was a way to support them, perhaps changing the text that reads Canonical supported to something else for ports. [Bug 309784] [NEW] Blank screen, unresponsive console when starting full-screen OpenGL apps
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel This concerns xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10 in Intrepid. I have a bog-standard Dell Optiplex 755 corporate PC with Intel onboard video. When I start a full-screen OpenGL application, such as Openarena or Kobo Deluxe (in GL driver mode), sometimes the screen goes black and the console becomes unresponsive (Ctrl+Alt+F2, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, Alt+Sysrq+B, Caps/Num/Scroll Lock). The system still accepts SSH logins, however, and otherwise continues to run. I've observed a couple of different failure modes so far: Kobo Deluxe: Screen goes black, console unresponsive. Application can be killed with SIGHUP. X server then maxes out the CPU, and /var/log/Xorg.0.log begins to grow very quickly, about four megabytes per second. (Note that this is with the program configured to use its OpenGL driver, and run full-screen.) Openarena: Screen goes black, white text-area cursor appears in center of screen after a couple seconds, pointer and console remain unresponsive. X server is pegging the CPU; log file is ballooning in size. In either case, the runaway X server can be killed with SIGQUIT. It restarts, and I get an Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode dialog. A few more clicks gets GDM back up, and I can log in again as usual, but the video hardware is in a strange state thereafter: If I switch to a virtual terminal, the screen turns black with white snow all over, and thicker snow wherever text should be. (You can sort-of see the login prompt at the top left, and when you log in, you see the snow-ified MOTD, etc.). Switching back to VT7 does not return to X; in fact, the X server is nowhere to be found. No error message in Xorg.0.log, etc.--- the only clue is a bizarre message from GDM in daemon.log: WARNING: Display :0 is busy. There is another X server running already. I will attach some Xorg.0.log* files, the error dialog, and the output of lspci -vvnn. Note: I have experience with GDB and other such tools, but not with X.org's internals. Thanks much! It seems to have worked. But upon reboot Ubuntu tried to do a Routine check of drives... and during that, at 28%, the machine hung, hard. No response from keyboard (or mouse) at all. This behavior is consistent, happens every time. I also tried to boot in Recovery mode, and the same thing happened, at the same place (28%). In Recovery mode at least a trace displayed some information before it hung completely. The last lines of the trace showed: [ 61.595508] [ff(then 8 more hex digits)] ?start.secondary+0x97/0xc2 ---[end trace (16 digit hex)]--- My hunch is I've got a bad sector (or more) or something similar on my boot drive. If so, is there an Ubuntu utility that will mark it/them bad so that Ubuntu won't try to use it/them? What would you recommend I do? Thanks much in advance. [Bug 173890] Re: flashplugin-nonfree fails to install due to md5sum mismatch
Perhaps. Or turned into a package that tells you how, or helps, to enable the other one? Other options? Maybe temporarily until the next release when it is removed completely? It wouldn't make sense to keep the package long-term. how will end users use the intrepid partner repository pasted above? System-Administration-Software Sources-Third Party. Enable the partner choices. To paraphrase Greg's point, that will not work for his mom/grandma. This sounds like a small issue, but things like this are what keep Ubuntu as more of a 'geek' option. On Windows, you click 'Get Adobe Flash Player' and it installs and just works. On Linux, you get a combo box which lets you select .tar.gz, .deb, etc and it downloads those files. You're now forced to know what they are in the first place, how to use archives or how to use dpkg to install a deb file. Or, you have to know about adobe- flashplugin, know how to enable the 'partner' repo and know how to install it. There is nothing connecting the ubiquitous 'Get Adobe Flash Player' icon with installing the package. Any technical issues which prevent this from occurring (e.g. browser support, the 'partner' repo isn't enabled by default) need to be resolved for the overall Ubuntu user experience to be successful. Ideal situation: Ubuntu user goes to Adobe.com, clicks on 'Get Adobe Flash Player'. They are presented with a dialog saying 'To install the Adobe flash player, the adobe-flashplugin package needs to be installed.' with a button to click on to spawn the installation of the package in the update manager. -- flashplugin-nonfree fails to install due to md5sum mismatch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173890 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 217789] Re: Realtek ALC888 low sound
I have an HP Pavilion with the ECS MCP61PM-HM board (HP/Compaq name: Nettle3-GL8E) I tried adding options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-hp to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base This made the unknown HDA error in dmesg go away, and the volume controls which were previously set to 100% across the board were reset to somewhere in the 60% region. When I crank them back up to 100%, I believe it may have increased the volume somewhat from where it was previously, but its still nowhere near the volume you would expect (and that I was able to get on the PC I just replaced.) For the record, these are powered (by 110v) speakers. I experimented with options snd-hda-intel model=6-stack-dig since this system does have 6 jacks on the back, 2 in the front (but no unused digital out that I can see). The dmesg error is still gone, but the volume seems identical. One side effect though, is that the volume slider in xmms no longer actually adjusts the volume. For what its worth, this is not limited to Ubuntu - the same behavior occurs in Fedora Core 10, so I'm thinking that this is related to Alsa perhaps as your post would suggest. I will experiment with some of the others and see if I do any better. Thanks a ton for the pointers!!! [Bug 308787] Re: Kernel Bug related to CPUFreq; Causes Powernowd to hang
Hi JCrus, Can you test the 2.6.27-11 kernel that is in intrepid-proposed. It contains quite a few stable patches from upstream. I just want to confirm you'll still be able to reproduce this issue with that newer kernel. To test this kernel do the following: 1) cd /etc/apt/sources.list.d 2) create a file intrepid-proposed.list which contains the following two lines (sudo vim intrepid-proposed.list): deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ intrepid-proposed main deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ intrepid-proposed main 3) sudo apt-get update 4) sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic 5) sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/intrepid-proposed.list 6) sudo apt-get update Steps 5 and 6 basically undo the enabling of intrepid-proposed. Of course you'll finally need to reboot into the 2.6.27-11 kernel to test. Please let us know your results. Thanks. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- Kernel Bug related to CPUFreq; Causes Powernowd to hang https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308787 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 307722] Re: My upgrade manager is hanging
I wonders why my E-mail, which was an answer to the request from 2008-12-15, is not shown in the current dialog. Because of this, I will repeat its contents here: Hey Shanta I tried to click System-Administration-Softwarekilder (i.e.: System - Administration - Software Sources). Which did not cause any application to start. The process observed was: 1. I clicked on Softwarekilder. 2. My mouse cursor changed to a round and rotating cursor. Meanwhile a box with the text Stating Administrativ... was shown in the panel. 3. This was see for about 15 seconds until it turned to be what it was before I did the click. 4. Nothing else happened. In that way I did not have access to Installable from CD-ROM/DVD. A similar behavior was seen when I tried to click System-Administration-Synaptic - pakkehåndtering (I do not what this is called exactly in English, but something like Synaptic - packet management). I also tried it without success after trying to add Authorization through clicking System-Authorization and selecting Manage system configuration. So sorry - I could not try it. [Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()
Kai: The patch does not appear to have changed the behaviour from the previous patch. An smbclient put of a file from a terminal still results in the ERRHRD -39 error message (after doing a successful ls first) and a Nautilus drag and drop of a file from the Desktop into the open NAS folder still results in the same No space left on device error message as noted by ^_Pepe_^ in the previous message. I've attached another Wireshark trace of the attempt to write the file Test2.txt from the Desktop into the NAS folder //192.168.0.195/public using Nautilus. The second Wireshark trace, in the following message (I can't seem to attach more than one file to a message in Launchpad) is the same drag and drop type of write but from the desktop of the virtual WinXP Pro SP3 into //192.168.0.195/public for comparison purposes. There is one other visual oddity that I have noticed that may or may not be a clue to something. When I have mounted the NAS folder //192.168.0.195/public on my Desktop and I select the folder using a right mouse button click, the dialog window that opens up shows the entry Paste into Folder occasionally flickering from greyed out status to selectable and then back to greyed out. ^_Pepe_^, do you see that as well? I checked the same thing out using Smaba 3.0 instead of Samba 3.2 and the Paste into Folder flickering from inactive to active doesn't occur. [Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow
I checked again, and I have to take back my previous statement. pci=routeirq does not seem to speed up file transfers for my system. (The KDE4 file transfer progress window seems to provide a not very conclusive average speed value) The reason I posted in this bug report is that I believe this actually is a kernel issue. I did several measurements copying big files (1.4 GiB Video) with Dolphin, Konqueror, on the command line using dd and using cp like follows: time (cp 1.4GiB-testfile.mkv /media/disk; sync). The speed varies between 3MiB/sec and 8 MiB/s. On another PC with OpenSuse installed, I actually get much higher average transfer rates, between 12 MiB/s and 15 MiB/s.
