Re: [ubuntu-art] Question about

2007-03-11 Thread Daniel Buch
Hi Jordi,

This is great news that you and your wife would like to produce some
t-shirts. One of the projects we're working on in the Marketing Team
aims to address many of the questions you've raised:
http://diy.devubuntu.com, https://launchpad.net/spreadubuntu

Trademark Policy and adherence to some basic branding guidelines are
all that (should) really matter, although I'm personally only aware of
how these apply to the Ubuntu brand.

If you are concerned about having the blessing of the Xubuntu
community, my recommendation would be for Emma to produce some roughs
of her designs and then request feedback from the applicable Ubuntu
sub-communities: Xubuntu-users, Xubuntu-dev Ubuntu-art,
Ubuntu-marketing, etc.

We look forward to the results!

Cheers,
~Dan

 Greetings

My wife ( Emma Alvarez ) is graphics designer, and has a shop at Cafepress.
We are users of Xubuntu OS, and like it very much.

She would like to know if she can make 2 t-shirts (one for man, another for
woman) in her shop with Xubuntu logo, and the url of Xubuntu
 (www.xubuntu.org).

The idea is to get mutual promotion. By the way, thus we send back the effort
to all those people in the GNU have done for people like us.
So with their logo and url, they get more promotion and support.

We saw there are some t-shirts of Ubuntu in Cafepress, so we suppose she can
 do it.

As a shopkeeper, Cafepress gets most of the money of the sales, as they get
 the base price.
Emma wins a markup over that base price, that she can choose.
For example, if an article costs 6 dollars of base price, and we fix the
price to 6 dollars, we earn no money. If we set a markup of 8 dollars, we
 earn 2 dollars.

Emma Alvarez would sell, if you like, this t-shirts and Xubuntu articles
without earning any money, just for the base price, that goes all to
 Cafepress.
The only purpose is mutual promotion, as we said, not to earn money from
 Xubuntu.

Of course, if it is allowed, it would be nice to add a small markup, for
 design and maintenance cost.

Is there something in the license that forbides doing this? If we can, were
can we get the gidelines of colors, logo, fonts, so the project is consistent
with Xubuntu artwork? Is this idea welcome to your community?

 Yours,

 Jordi R Cardona

Re: [ubuntu-art] Advices and artwork needed for the Ubuntu Media Center project

2007-03-11 Thread Kenneth Wimer
On Saturday 10 March 2007 10:29:00 Jonathan Delrot wrote:
 Hi !

I do well know this problem. And gmail is very helpful, though having
tons of mail seems to cause it few problems.

I think too, gmail is very great !

But seriously, it is a very solid palette which, in the meantime, has

  proven

itself. The one place in which it could perhaps still need help is in

  the

greens. Perhaps taking the oxygen palette as a reference/base and then
creating a good set of greens would be the best way to start.

interesting enough since we currently think about a green predominance ;)
  @Jon: any comment?

For the green, there will be a problem, because the oxygen's green is not
our green, and there are 2 greens (I believe). So, your idea is good to
 start, you need 4 or 5 greens (green/blue, green/yellow, green/dark,
 green/green ^^ and green/?), it's very important if we don't want
repetitions. After we take the oxygen palette + green set and we will have
 the Chloropryll palette.

Another very important aspect that is often forgotten is to

know your customers - exactly which target group is the media
 center

  for?

this is not targeted at a special audience, but generally is for the
mass market people, wanting to install a media center without hassle.

Actually you pretty much defined a group there :-)

Typical, normal people at home who want to set up a media center, not

  a

whole desktop. Not the best definition but you get the idea. Back that

  up

with some typical use cases and you've got a great structure to define

  your

   specs, etc.

The customers aren't the geeks, that it's sure. I think in normal people
is not us, so they don't want to understant how it's work, and they just
want it's work, it does what they want without search. So the theme should
be very realistic, simple, because lot of things is not a solution, it's
necessary a good thing at the good place, and a very instinctive design,
 very easy to understand.

So I need help for the green set, can you start the selection ? Thanks!
  Jonathan.

To be honest, I doubt I'll be getting to any other work for a few weeks -
things are heating up for feisty and I've a load to do already.

The best way to do this would be to look at all the use cases and play around
until you find a few good colors. After that, get the right shades of those
and make a final selection. Sounds easy, eh? Unfortunately it is not as easy
at it sounds and it'll probably get tweaked over time.

Ken

yep true

The ebook was published by someone (or some company)

FOSS is about sharing but not something which is not owned by you or
when you don't have license for sharing.

FOSS yes but the question still is about the proprietory stuff - the
difference i guess is that a. the proprietory drivers, etc are not
licensed as open source - even if they are freely distributable

[whereas in the case of the book it is not freely distributable (and nor

difference i guess is that a. the proprietory drivers, etc are not
licensed as open source - even if they are freely distributable

[whereas in the case of the book it is not freely distributable (and nor
 is it open source)]

Yup, you got it right this time. :)
Just that in the case of proprietary h/w driver stuff u only need them
if you 'purchase' the hardware. So here comes the difference between the
vendors which support Linux(with proprietary drivers) and those which
support Open Source.

Re: [ubuntu-in] adding user problem

2007-03-11 Thread shashi hv
Hi,
You should give user name other than root only otherwise you will
not be able to log on. But for me if i do SU and i gave same password
as i entered while installing linux, it gave the root privilages. ANd
then i opened the 'users and groups' utility from the menu. There i
changed the root password and then i changed the properties as well
from the last tab for root. After that you have to go to log on
peroperties, there you have check the box for administrator logging
in.
This is a quite a long method. I donot know any methods. I figured
out on my own. I was able to log in as root and do all other things.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] App for organizing pdfs

2007-03-11 Thread Kris Marsh
Regarding file system tagging, take a look at Leaftag -
http://www.chipx86.com/wiki/Leaftag. Development seems to have
stagnated unfortunately, and it doesn't seem to work for Ubuntu (I've
not been motivated enough to spend more than about 20 minutes on it
though).

Something more immediately available is Tracker -
http://www.gnome.org/projects/tracker/ - which apparently does
tagging. I'm not sure if anyone has written a Nautilus plugin to
access the tagging functionality though (yet!)... There are apt
repositories for Tracker on the website, so you can install it via
Synaptic/Add-Remove Programs/apt-get.

[ubuntu-uk] Hi / Forum

2007-03-11 Thread Kirrus
Hello!

I'm a newbie onto this list.. thought I might as well say a bit about
me. I'm a trainee web designer in Wales. My Primary home and work O.S.
is Ubuntu. I switched to Ubuntu in summer last year, and haven't looked
back. (Apart from running Guild Wars Starcraft :) on windoze.) I run a
startek pbem rpg in my spare time, along with trying to keep my blog up
to date. (I will redesign the look when I get round to it...)

A quick question, do you have a forum? I ask, because I spend most of my
time on forums, and find email lists annoying, as I have enough emails
coming in anyway, I have to set them into digest mode, Which limits
their effectiveness.

You might also check out nuxified.org where I help moderate, a lot of

It does bring up the question.. should we start a fora? I can theme

we thought it was worth while.

We've discussed this a lot previously, and decided that if we were to
have a forum we would have one hosted on ubuntuforums.org. I think we
also decided that it would be best if it was a list - forum gateway in

I'm trying to implement a similar thing for Thanet LUG using mail2forum

Re: An Ubuntu Firewall

2007-03-11 Thread JoE

I think you're right that a better firewall system is needed.

I don't think that ubuntu needs it's own magical one, though. Bear in mind
that while we all like ubuntu, this is still linux. why not make one that
can be used by as many people as possible?

On 3/11/07, Randy Wallace [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Ubuntu needs an Ubuntu-Specific Firewall, similar to the OS X

Firestarter does a good job, but I think it can be done better.
Notably:
Networking, Routing, Services, and Firewalling should be configured
from ONE tool.
There should be support for more than two interfaces.
There should be support for multicast, incl. mDNS, etc...
It should be easy, but include the features that a power user requires.
There should be a simple debug-type tool to recognize when services are
blocked.
It should be secure.

I think this would be a great addition to Ubuntu.

I'm looking for an opinion from the community, particularly involving
whether or not I should
attempt to start this project. It would be a lot of work, and I don't
want to do it in vain.

All is good, but nothing stands better. Don't shout at me :)
Well, let me explain
Ubuntu is mainly for desktop, though it has its server built. But i think,
developers all around the world and disto packagers should halt for a
moment, and then plan some way out to develop system thats desktop oriented.
HOw? just as you said, Firewall, you think there should be better, and when
it will come, we would demand something more better, and has more
functionality, and better integrate into system.
I have pointed out many other things too, like making nautilus more
responsive, optimized, and should have plugins like showing bigger preview
in tooltip(optional feature) with most demanding details of the file.
Gnome too has lot imperfections. Bigger default font, and no better compact
clean and sharp theme has impressed me as does apple mac. If the widgets are
sharp, well compact, it can show mroe and more options in the available
screen. so we should get back to the basics, and make plan route towards the
desktop,

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Beryl vs. GeForce4

2007-03-11 Thread Dorneles Treméa
Opa Waldir,

aqui no meu PC, ele vai substituir o X, certo?

tudo funciona perfeitamente... :-)

Inclusive, demorei semanas na minha transição
Windows/Ubuntu justamente porque meu computador vivia travando e eu demorei
 Facilityhttp://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Latest_Nvidia_Edgyme ajudou a
configurar o computador correndo contra o relógio, pois a qualquer hora e

beryl: 6.3MB
beryl-manager: 4.1MB
emerald: 7.1MB

soberano... ;-)

 - Vale a pena tanto trabalho?

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] sobre o comando apt-get dist-upgrade

2007-03-11 Thread Alexandro Silva
release.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Beryl vs. GeForce4

2007-03-11 Thread [o] Follmann
Como estou aqui brigando pra fazer meu modem (adsl usb bridged) funcionar no
ubuntu, acabei baixando e instalando o Feisty.
janelas 'borracha', e do cubo.

falta do driver 3d.

E perdoem as imprecisões técnicas.

Em 11/03/07, Dorneles Treméa [EMAIL PROTECTED] escreveu:

 Opa Waldir,

 Beryl
aqui no meu PC, ele vai substituir o X, certo?

 tudo funciona perfeitamente... :-)

Inclusive, demorei semanas na minha transição
Windows/Ubuntu justamente porque meu computador vivia travando e eu
 demorei
  Facilityhttp://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Latest_Nvidia_Edgyme ajudou a
configurar o computador correndo contra o relógio, pois a qualquer hora
 e

 luz?

E, aproveitando o ensejo, tenho mais duas perguntas:
  - O Beryl ocupa muita memória?

No exato momento, os 3 componentes do beryl ocupam a seguinte
 quantidade de memória aqui:

 beryl: 6.3MB
 beryl-manager: 4.1MB
 emerald: 7.1MB

 soberano... ;-)

  - Vale a pena tanto trabalho? Afinal, se eu entendi direito, usar o
 Beryl

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Arquivos corrompidos [ext3]

2007-03-11 Thread Álvaro Justen [Turicas]
Dorneles,
Consegui ontem resolver o problema! :-)
arquivo') e pronto! :-)
Ah, eu tive que rodar fsck.reiserfs --rebuild-tree /dev/sda3, e não
fsck --rebuild-tree /dev/sda3 (até eu descobrir isso...).

On 3/11/07, Dorneles Treméa [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Opa Álvaro,

 heheh... do mal! :-)

  aparece o seguinte:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/media/sda3/sites/pma# ls -lha
  total 3,0K
  drwxrwxrwx 4 alvaro alvaro 3,1K 2007-03-10 03:00 .
  drwxrwxrwx 6 alvaro alvaro 144 2007-03-10 03:00 ..
  ?- ? ? ? ?? browse_foreigners.php
  ?- ? ? ? ?? calendar.php
  ?- ? ? ? ?? ChangeLog
  [...]

 apt-get dist upgrade.

Conectiva (falem mal dele, falem).

 o
  apt-get dist upgrade.

Conectiva (falem mal dele, falem).

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] [Fwd: Join the Google Summer of Code with Ubuntu]

2007-03-11 Thread Lucas Arruda (llbra)
Aqui vai a msg:

Hi all,

Ubuntu is once again participating in the Google Summer of Code [1].
We would like to make as many projects as possible, available for
 students to work on.

It is a great opportunity to expose new students to the wonderful world
of Ubuntu, get some exciting projects off the ground and get good
exposure for the projects, students and organisations alike.

SoC 2007 starts early this year, so there are even better chances to
get projects for the second Ubuntu release this year (around October
 2007).

What can you do to help?

 We need

  - Exciting project ideas - preferably with detailed specs. Ideas can
be related to the following broad topics:

* Ubuntu [2]
* Edubuntu [3]
* Kubuntu [4]
* Accessability [5]

  - If you have a project idea, and would like it to be considered,
please add a project headings with a brief description to our Ideas
Page [6]. Selected projects will be tracked on Blueprint. If you
are ready to create a detailed spec please add it to Blueprint [7].
We would encourage members of the community who have been thinking
of a cool new feature or plan to seize the opportunity to get it
into the idea pool, as it might just get selected and implemented.

You can see a list of proposed projects at [8].

  - Mentors - volunteers in the know who will answer any questions the
selected students have, and help them to settle into the community
for the duration of the SoC. You will also be responsible for
providing feedback to Google, the Student and Canonical on the
project progress, as well as evaluating the project at the end of
the programme. For your time and trouble you will receive a cool
limited edition t-shirt! If you would like to volunteer to be a
mentor, please contact [9].

  - Good capable eligible Students, to apply for the projects. If you
are a registered student and are over 18 years of age, you can
apply for one of the projects (applications open on the Summer of
Code page starting March 14 2007). We would like to select
students who are enthusiastic about our projects and are able to
commit the time and energy required to make them successful.
Please make your applications detailed and give us enough
information to be able to make an intelligent selection. Please
remember that being selected is a privilege and a great
opportunity. The more you commit, the greater your chance of a
fantastic reward at the end Additionally if it is really good your
code might be included in Ubuntu! See [10] for the SoC FAQ.

Additional informations about your project should be provided in
the Ubuntu/Kubuntu wikis in the form of a specification.

The full Summer of Code rules can be found in the student FAQ [11]

[ubuntu-marketing] Report flemish education fair

Hello all!
The Belgium Locoteam did a great job last week! They spread the
ubuntu-love during the 4 day on the biggest education conference in
Belgium. We also had some interesting visitors.
I'm writing a small report about this, and it would be great if we could
put this in the fridge/UWN.
Would this be possible?
Thanks!

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] [ubuntu-art] Question about

[Ubuntu-be] Ubuntu-be.org spreads Ubuntu love at VLOD education conference

2007-03-11 Thread François Cauwe
Full report with pict's:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/VLOD_2007/Report

Ubuntu-be.org spreads Ubuntu love at VLOD education conference

During the 4 day long Flemish education conference, the Ubuntu-be.org
volunteers spread their edubuntu enthusiasm around the directors and
ict-responsibles of all Belgium schools. The VLOD-conference is the
biggest education conference in Flanders which about 8000 people, mainly
decisionmakers attend. We started on Monday at 10 o'clock with a
workshop about edubuntu in schools, and after that we manned the booth.

The results were astonishing; people were interested to discover this
system everybody was talking about. We showed them the possibilities and
advantages of 'free software', and gave them a demo of thin clients. And
quickly we had more people listening at our booth than our colleagues
from Vista.

On the first day after the closing of the conference, all the people
from the Vista booth came over to ours to discover what was happening,
so we spread the ubuntu-love among them as well...

The week went on and gave us a really good feeling about it, schools
were really interested! People mailed us with questions, came back to
thank us, telling that it was fantastic that everything simply worked.
Some companies came to tell they used ubuntu in their showroom as well,
and they wanted to help us, even with sponsoring... It was just
fantastic!

On Wednesday we also had South-African visit from Canonical, Richard
Weideman was in Brussels, so he also visited the conference.

A bit later we also got a visit from the Education Business Manager at
Microsoft Belgium, Christian Ramioul.

In total we distributed more than 700 CD’s and collected more than 300
names and email addresses from interested people.

We would also thank all the volunteers that helped us make this
possible! Especially:

  * Annelies Bollen
  * François Cauwe
  * Xavier Cauwe
  * Ismaël Demiddel
  * Guy Duportail linux-service.be: our sponsor
  * Jan Fabry
  * Jens Timmerman
  * Dieter Verfaillie
  * Richard Weideman
  * Mark van den Borre
  * The inevitable invisible and forgotten volunteers

I don't know what's happening whit the e-mail addresses we collect now,

Yes this would only be in Dutch, but I think it might be more easy to just

then making a brand new newsletter/magazine...

they opted in to receive some info, so, why not?

As the public will be flemish- and frenchspeaking students and their

http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=55645p=1 )

sudo apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter
sudo bcm43xx-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware/ bcmwl5.sys
sudo rmmod bcm43xx
sudo modprobe bcm43xx

Mais sudo rmmod bcm43xx renvoie le message suivant :
ERROR: Module bcm43xx does not exist in /proc/modules

Sur ce portable, il y a un bouton qui sert à activer le wifi sous Win ;

j'ai obtenu un écran noir avec inscrit dessus :the program inclued with the
 ubuntu system are free software
the exact distribution terms for each program are described in the individual
 files in /usr/share/doc/*/copyright
ubuntu comes with absolutly no warranty to the exten permitted by applicable
 law

alors quelle commande me permettrait de pouvoir relancer kubuntu normalement,

sudo aptitude install mc
Les logs se trouvent dans /var/log. Les plus important sont Xorg.0.log,
daemon.log, kern.log, messages, syslog.

alors quelle commande me permettrait de pouvoir relancer kubuntu

si tu as besoin d'aide.

A+

Damned !

[Bug 91077] Re: Closing glxgears window causes xcb_xlib_lock assertion and sound interruption

2007-03-11 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
OK, it looks like assertion is being caused by the legacy NVIDIA GL
library:

(gdb) thread apply all bt

Using
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/nvidia/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa glxgears
(thus using the original mesa GL library) makes the assertion part of this
problem disappear.
