Marvell SD8686 don't work
Hi boys, i'm new on this mailing list. About two week ago, i've installed on my new MID (a Benq S6) a custom ubuntu MID 8.04 that i've created with moblin. I've a great problem with wifi module a Marvell SD8686. I'm not able to load it. I've downloaded the last original drivers from Marvell site and i've put its on /lib/firmware/mrvl/ directory. But i don't able to enable it. I've tried with: # sudo modprobe libertas # sudo modprobe libertas_sdio helper_name=mrvl/sd8686_helper.bin fw_name=mrvl/sd8686.bin But...nothing. Can someone help me? Well firts of all if you are trying to install KDE from other packages the paths might differ if that distro was not derived from debian so you might have a headache installing them Next even if you manage to install it properly, you will have to update the application database and everything Installing KDE from another distros package WILL be ALOT of work. How will you come to know of the kernel by installing KDE from other distros? We appreciate your willingness to pick up challenges, but this is (to be very polite) *stupidity*. And also you need not install KDE if you are already on Kubuntu. Kubuntu is KDE based Ubuntu. To know the nitty-gritty of Ubuntu, there are several other ways. For. e.g. attending the weekly get together's initiated by folks, taking part in the Ubuntu Global Bug Jam, triaging bugs in Launchpad, helping Ubuntu team to test Alpha releases and fix issues. IMO these are better ways to get to know the Ubuntu system and the Ubuntu Community better. Also kernel is the same across distros (except for a few distro specific changes) and has nothing to do with KDE Installation. Please don't take me otherwise as I am a kind of experimental person. Great!! I have a couple of suggestions for you. Experiment with the development Ubuntu release a.k.a Jaunty Alpha releases. Very unstable and will definitely be challenging to sort things out. Good to know that you want to experiment around but you need to understand the fundamental difference between distros and how they manage the softwares around. Until you are going to install packages from another distribution which either derives out of your distribution or derives out of the same distribution as yours, you are going to left with a broken system. Nobody would prefer to call installing packages from random distribution into yours as experiment and what it is really called has already been mentioned in one of the replies. Secondly, if you want to experiment with upstream bleeding edge KDE, then checkout the latest source of KDE and try to build it up. Je joins ma voix à celle de Donald. Je vois que je ne suis pas le seul à déplorer la difficulté que représente la lecture de fichiers transformés en liens HTML et qui nous parviennent sous forme de lien HTML précédé de la mention: Une pièce jointe HTML a été nettoyée... Ce qui rend pénible la lecture dudit texte, qui nous apparait, lorsqu'on clique sur le lien, sous forme encodée. J'ai cru que c'était parce que je lis mes courriels dans Opera. Mais c'est la même chose dans gmail. N'y a-t-il pas moyen d'envoyer les contributions en format texte seulement, pour éviter que la liste les transforme en code achtéèmèlisés? Bonjour vous tous, Je ne sais pas si je suis le seul à envoyer des courriels avec des fichiers attaché et du code HTML. D'ailleurs je ne sais pas si mes derniers messages en contenait. Je me rend compte que même en supprimant ma signature avant l'envoie d'un message, il restait peu être du HTML. Je viens de me rappeler qu'il y a une option Rédiger les messages en HTML dans ma configuration de Thunderbird. J'ai donc opté pour un solution plus drastique. Utiliser une autre adresse de courriel configuré dans un autre logiciel. Évolution, pour ne pas le nommer. Désolé des désagréments. N'hésitez pas a me dire si j'envoie encore des caractères extra-terrestre. Je ne maîtrise pas toujours bien mes logiciels. Malgré qu'avec Ubuntu j'ai au moins le droit d'étudier toutes leurs subtilités. C'est dans: Edit Preferences Composition onglet General puis en bas Configure text format behavior (Click Send options...). Dans certaines listes c'est plus sévère, en général on évite le HTML car sur des appareils mobiles ou sur un terminal texte le nettoyage de code ne fonctionne pas toujours. [ubuntu-uk] Exwick Community Centre Open Day
Hi folks, I wasn't sure if there were any other members on the list who were near to Exeter in Devon, but I thought I'd announce this anyway as it's Ubuntu related. On Saturday 7th Feb (this Saturday) it's the open day of the Exwick Community Centre in Exeter. As part of the open day we're hoping to officially launch the new computer suite at the centre. The computer suite is based around Ubuntu running LTSP (hence the recent e-mails to the list about LTSP). I'm hoping that we can showcase Ubuntu and Free/Open Source software to the visitors and hopefully build up a bit more interest in Ubuntu. The open day will be running from 12pm to 4:30pm at the Exwick Community Centre on Kinnerton Way in Exwick, Exeter. If anyone is near by and would like to come along feel free to reply to this and I'll post some more details. I'm hoping that if this all goes well that I'll be able to get some more community centres up and running with LTSP installations in the local area and hopefully raise awareness of Ubuntu and Free/Open Source software in the process. By the way, does anyone know if it would be possible and how I'd go about getting some promotional material such as posters, stickers etc from Canonical? Was XP fully shut down last time it was run, or perhaps put into hibernation? This would stop Ubuntu monting the XP partition. Try booting into XP and shutting down (possibly twice), then boot into Ubuntu. Having said that, there is a force option for mounting NT partitions that are reluctant to mount. I added a link on my desktop to my XP partition. Today the icon was replaced with a link to the CD-Rom my son had left in when he shut down XP last night. Removing the CD has got rid of that icon, but I haven't got my XP link back. [ubuntu-uk] Dual monitors through 2 graphics cards
Hidely-ho people! Just swapped out my motherboard to support my new CPU, and this one has an onboard intel graphics chip on it, so I'm looking at reconfiguring my dual monitor setup. Currently, I have a 19 screen, and my 15 LCD tv as a second monitor for watching films on, running off a nVidia Geforce 6600LE. I was wondering if anyone could give me pointers as to how to set up my system so that the tv is connected to the intel chip, and my main monitor is running of the nVidia card? Google doesn't want to help me right now, but I'll continue looking. Someone mentioned something in IRC a while back about doing it, too. [ubuntu-uk] Add/Remove... programs lost
Evening :-) I'm not sure what has happened, but I appear to have the same problem on my desktop and my Eee. When I click Applications Add/Remove... there is nothing but blank boxes. I also tried selecting all open source application and all available applications, still getting nothing. 8.10 (fully updated) is installed on both (Eee has the array kernel). Any ideas? Hi, I downloaded the 9.04 live CD yesterday and found the sound is now fixed. For anyone interested, it seems to be very fast. I only noticed two things. 1, Orca does hesitate a little between key presses. 2, After I exited the Orca preferences it still showed the help, exit or preferences screen. I also have to find out how to enable the CTRL alt delete keys because this feature is turned off. But as a whole 9.04 seems pretty good. One more thing. The adman apps and install still do not work from the user account. Why the needed file hasn't been included by this time in ubuntu I don't know, but the apps that worked before still work. I need help with a command
Hi, I found 9.04 has the same problem intrepid did for a while. You can't get to the top panel because of the compiz settings. Like when intrepid was first being produced these settings or at least the one in appearance settings that sets it to none isn't shown. Someone gave me a terminal command to reset medicity about a year ago, but I don't remember it. Does anyone know the command to do this? That worked before and I was able to get to the top panel. (though still not final) Synfig removed because it was causing a build issue with the disks. -RT is coming along better than before but there's constant developments there. I have been using Innotek Virtualbox version 1.5.6 successfully for a long time, on Ubuntu 8.0.4 Yesterday I decided to upgrade to version 2.1-2.1., since it was in Synaptics. After selecting the download and proceeded to apply, Synaptic asked me to remove vs 1.5.6 first before installing 2.1-2.1, I agreed to apply. The download went on and started the installation when mid way it stopped and the following Error poped out:Error were encountered while processing: E: /var/cache/apt/archives/virtualbox-2.1_2.1.2-41885%5fUbuntu%5fhardy_i386.deb: trying to overwrite `/lib/modules/2.6.24-23-386/misc/vboxdrv.ko', which is also in package virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.24-23-386 I couldnt understand why using Synaptic Package I was getting an error so I searched Ubuntu Forums and I found this Link: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-virtualbox-21-in-ubuntu-810-intrepid-ibex804-hardy-heron.html I followed all steps and I reached to : sudo apt-get install virtualbox-2.1 which proceeded until... Try to manually remove all Virtualbox packages first (using synaptic). Then, install the newest version from the repository or from the web site http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads. How to upgrade VirtualBox depends on which version you are using. Judging by the version number you quoted, Victor, you had the Innotek version. Innotek has been bought by SunMicrosystems and all future upgrades will come from this source. Updates will not appear in Synaptic, however, there is a Check for updates button in the Sun version. The version of VirtualBox in Synaptic is the OSE version which will receive automated updates via the Update Manager. The update process for the version of VirtualBox obtainable from Sun directly requires the prior removal of the old version but not the complete removal as available in Synaptic. That way you will retain any installed operating systems complete with their configuration. I have recently upgraded to version 2.1.2 and all four installed operating systems are intact and fully functioning. If there is something untranslated to Spanish, Ubuntu shows me in English. I am not a developer but, I think that almost 100% packages of Ubuntu CD use gettext library for internationalization. Gettext system works with .po files in source (mo and gmo in binary). I translate some programs in my free time, and I think I know more or less how is a .po file. In each file there is a copy of the original language (English) and then a space that is used by programs like poEdit for allow put your translation into your language. 1º There is a copy of original language in every translation 2º Gettex takes strings of programs, therefore system always can use a language. Please, someone can answer me what if there is any reason to do this or is simply a mistake? Currently I run 64 bit Intrepid, and was wondering what the best/ safest/ easiest solution to my goal would be: 1) Install Studio components from repositories for Ubuntu Studio-ish Supplementation in Intrepid? 2) Install A dual boot configuration of Intrepid and Studio? 3) Do a full conversion to Studio 8.10 or 8.04? a) Is it worth trying out 8.10 right away, I hear of serious bugaroo's? When you click Add on either the input socket side or the output socket side, you are creating a virtual device to which you can add an arbitrary number of plugs, ALSA sound, ALSA Midi, or JACK Midi, which are selected from the currently available ports on your system. This means that if you want to create a virtual device for Ardour's master output, Ardour needs to be open when you're making the patchbay. You can then connect that Ardour master device that you've made to any other devices you've made, and whenever they're both present, (i.e. Ardour is open as is whatever program or sound device you've connected it to) patchbay will automagically make connections between them. what's the main difference between a first price sound card and a professionnal one ? An amateur sound card needs a stereo in/out, for converting tapes and LP's, gaming, and the usual computer stuff. You can record with these, but the DAC's are usually not so good (though better than even 5 years ago). You do not need to have more than 16bit/44.1KHz for these (though if you do, good for you). Medium soundcards are for non-pro musicians and home studio users. These will probably need MIDI, and AT LEAST 24bit/96KHz stereo. Most likely there will need to be 4, 8, or 16 discreet channels to hook up to your mixer. This is where the majority of Linux users are. Professional sound cards should be 24bit/192KHz, with oversampling DAC's, minimum 8 channels I/O, and ideally include a mixer (motorized faders are nice). The computers that run these cards should NEVER be connected to the internet, and should have no software on the machine other than what is needed to run specific music apps. In other words, it would be a package system. Historically, ProTools is the model for this sort of system, but others have been tried (e.g. PARIS, MOTU). Since Cory's suggestions are WAY too cheap, I'll learn ya sum things: - what's a cheaper price for an amateur sound card ? Free with your motherboard/laptop. - what's a good price for a medium sound card ? Anywhere from $100 - $600, depending on your needs. Stereo I/O with MIDI will be $100-$200, 8 channels I/O will be $300-$600. - What's a good price for a professional sound card ? Over $600. Typically over $1000. Almost none are supported by Linux. I need too examples of sound card that runs without any trouble or very easily under GNU/Linux, for beginners (and cheaper) : Just make sure Linux supports your motherboard's sound card... for medium use, semi-pro : I personally use the M-Audio Audiophile 2496. M-Audio in general is fairly Linux-friendly, and with this soundcard you get stereo I/0 with MIDI for around $100. There is also the Audiophile 192 which goes up to 192KHz, for about $80 more. I have heard terrible things about the USB version, though. If you want to step up to 8 ins and outs, the PreSonus FP10 (formerly FirePod) is listed as reported to work under ffado: http://www.ffado.org/?q=node/317 I don't own one, but I have used one, and PreSonus is generally considered very good for their DAC's. You can get one for $400 nowadays. However, the PreSonus only goes up to 96KHz. If you need 192KHz, I'd go with the Echo AudioFire 8, which is fully supported: http://www.ffado.org/?q=node/70 I haven't used Echo in years, but back in the day they were considered pretty top-notch. The AudioFire 8 is around $500 or so. You can also spend an extra $100 and step up to the AudioFire 12, which has 12 inputs and outputs. for professionnal use : For Linux? RME. That's about it. However, everyone on this list who has one loves theirs. Note that the FireWire versions are NOT supported. Those are way out of my price range, so you'll have to ask other people for their recomendations. Also: I have an old Tascam TDM1000 board with an M-Audio TDIF PCI card. I have no idea if it's supported or not, since I don't use Linux in my studio. But digital boards are also something to consider - and should probably be a seperate entry, as they're a different beast than just an audio input. Danilo dificuldade nenhuma, simplesmente foi opção que outros usuários da lista deram. O que pode confundir um pouco é a falta de informação, como por exemplo... Você esta dizendo para a pessoa remover o kernel no synaptic, ate aqui tudo bem, mas se for feito isso, ele remove a opção de bootar esse kernel removido do grub? ou fica constando lá e aparecendo uma lista enorme de kernels... Por isso que falei, uma coisa é remover o kernel da inicialização (menu.lst)por isso outros usuários indicaram ferramentas gráficas para manutenção do grub, e manter o kernel na maquina, outra coisa é remover completamente o kernel (usando o synaptic, só não sei se fazendo isso ele vai tirar do menu.lst) Ps- Eu particularmente não vejo problema algum em manter os kernels antigo. Através do apt-get ou aptitude, o kernel removido tambem é removido do menu.lst, provavelmente o synaptic tambem remova. Pelo que sei uma das novidades apresentadas no 8.10 era a remoção automática de pacotes que não estão mais em uso, inclusive os Kernels. Aqui quando faço sudo apt-get autoremove os kernels antigos são todos apagados. O warning abaixo apareceu rmdir: falha ao remover `/lib/modules/2.6.27-7-generic': O diretório não está vazio dpkg - aviso: durante a remoção de linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic, diretório '/lib/modules/2.6.27-7-generic' não estava vazio, logo não foi removido. Então se você quiser pode remover manualmente ... Agora não me lembro certinho em que momento ele me perguntou isso.. na próxima atualização de kernel do 9.04 eu coloco aqui. Quando eu tiver um tempo vou bootar no 9.04 e ver se saiu alguma. Se realmente é no momento da instalação do novo eu prefiro não fazer. Eu sempre atualizo, dou um boot, testo minhas ferramentas principais de trabalho e só depois eu removo o anterior. * nunca tive problemas ao atualizar um kernel novo, faço realmente por precaução. -- Danilo G. Danilo veja bem não é preguiça, antes de dizer isso você deveria saber se eu tenho condições de efetuar tal teste. Ocorre que eu não atualizo kernel pelo synaptic logo não poderia testar, outra coisa, quem estava com a dúvida era outra pessoa, eu somente mandei um comentário pessoal. Eu compilo o kernel manualmente, já comentei uma vez, eu vim do slackware, então peguei mania de não usar gerenciadores do tipo apt, yum.. etc... ENTENDEU !!! Me sinto mais a vontade compilando manualmente e colocando as opções que realmente uso, por tanto na minha maquina nunca tem dois kernels instalados, porque eu faço a remoção... Outra coisa amigo, se você se sente ofendido em responder uma dúvida e para tal, usa palavras e termos irônicos lembro você que não tem obrigação nenhuma em fazer, e se for pra fazer, trate as pessoas com o devido respeito. Mas como a dúvida não é sua então considere que a resposta também não é pra você uai ! Eu compilo o kernel manualmente, já comentei uma vez, eu vim do slackware, então peguei mania de não usar gerenciadores do tipo apt, yum.. etc... ENTENDEU !!! ENTENDI !! Eu também usava Slackware (alias ainda uso em alguns casos) mas como meu trabalho principal é programar, eu cansei de ter que compilar (perder horas procurando dependencias) e instalar todas as ferramentas auxiliares que eu precisava. Então o Ubuntu serviu bem para mim, mas ainda uso o Slackão... Até algum tempo atrás eu também compilava o kernel manualmente, mas depois de uns benchmarks que fiz aqui achei que pra máquinas mais atuais (as que eu uso aqui) o ganho de performance é tão insignificante que não compensava o trabalho, então eu aboli isso. Me sinto mais a vontade compilando manualmente e colocando as opções que realmente uso, por tanto na minha maquina nunca tem dois kernels instalados, porque eu faço a remoção... Entendo. Outra coisa amigo, se você se sente ofendido em responder uma dúvida Não me sinto ofendido em responder. Na verdade, você agradeceu a dica, abriu margem para que fosse entendido que você ainda não havia testado. Eu entendi isso e forcei a barra em dizer que o problema estava resolvido só para ver o que você dizia. A questão de alterar o subject é porque quando você altera, você quebra a relação da sua mensagem com as anteriores. Aí a situação fica pior, porque quem vem procurar vê a sua pergunta, vê as dicas, mas não vê que foi resolvido. [Ubuntu-BR] Ubuntu 9.04 X Video - Não inicia o Desktop
Pessoal, baixei a versão do Ubuntu 9.04 mas ele não quer iniciar o Desktop no meu notebook O problema parece o Video... nas outras distribuicoes do ubuntu vai numa boa mas essa agora nao esta indo :( Será que tem como tentar configurar o video, ja que ele me dá a opcao de entrar num terminal ? Já tentei o dpkg-reconfigure xserver-org e o dpkg-preconfigure xserver-org mas nao vai Exite algum comando que eu possa dar pra que ele me mostre as opcoes de video e placas pra que eu possa configurar ? Ele dá o boot normal... mas chega na tela de login ele da uma listrada na tela e nao consegue iniciar o desktop ai ele volta pro login e fica contando degressivamente ate tentar denovo... Ocorre que eu não atualizo kernel pelo synaptic logo não poderia testar, outra coisa, quem estava com a dúvida era outra pessoa, eu somente mandei um comentário pessoal. Por isso que falei, uma coisa é remover o kernel da inicialização (...) e manter o kernel na maquina, outra coisa é remover completamente o kernel (usando o synaptic, só não sei se fazendo isso ele vai tirar do menu.lst) como pra mim isso não pareceu um comentário e sim uma dúvida então respondi que você deveria ter feito o teste já que não sabe o que vai acontecer. Mas como a dúvida não é sua então considere que a resposta também não é pra você uai ! Eu compilo o kernel manualmente, já comentei uma vez, eu vim do slackware, então peguei mania de não usar gerenciadores do tipo apt, yum.. etc... ENTENDEU !!! ENTENDI !! Eu também usava Slackware (alias ainda uso em alguns casos) mas como meu trabalho principal é programar, eu cansei de ter que compilar (perder horas procurando dependencias) e instalar todas as ferramentas auxiliares que eu precisava. Então o Ubuntu serviu bem para mim, mas ainda uso o Slackão... Até algum tempo atrás eu também compilava o kernel manualmente, mas depois de uns benchmarks que fiz aqui achei que pra máquinas mais atuais (as que eu uso aqui) o ganho de performance é tão insignificante que não compensava o trabalho, então eu aboli isso. Me sinto mais a vontade compilando manualmente e colocando as opções que realmente uso, por tanto na minha maquina nunca tem dois kernels instalados, porque eu faço a remoção... Entendo. Outra coisa amigo, se você se sente ofendido em responder uma dúvida Não me sinto ofendido em responder. [Ubuntu-BR] tuxfrw e openvpn
Alguem já implementou uma solução do tuxfrw e openvpn?? Quais foram as configurações necessárias no tuxfrw?? Aqui na minha empresa, o tuxfrw está implantado e a vpn está em fase de testes. Percebi que o tuxfrw impede o funcionamento correto da openvpn, pois quanho paro o serviço (/etc/init.d/tuxfrw stop) a vpn funciona normalmente. Quando inicio o serviço do tuxfrw, a vpn pára de funcionar e não consegui ver nada significante no log. A príncipio só liberei a porta da vpn de lá e não fiz nenhuma outra configuração. Amigo eu entendo que são duas coisas, uma é remover o kernel do boot de inicialização, no caso do ubuntu o grub. Dei ok e ele partiu. Na instalação, ele seguiu normalmente e voilá, o sistema entrou 1024 x 768 para minha surpresa. Se não me engano, o F4 abre as opções de vídeo na inicialização do boot pelo LiveCD, experimente. Outra sugestão é usar um monitor externo para ver se há compatibilidade, se rolar, faça os ajustes após a instalação. PS: Se estás testando, tudo bem. Eu entendi ambos. Só estou dizendo, pq mascarar eles na inicialização, se eles vão continuar instalados na maquina. Uma vez que a versão mais nova do Kernel já tenha sido testada na maquina sem problemas. [Ubuntu-BR] Monitor não funciona
Olá pessoal, formatei meu pc e como estava dando laguns problema que inclusive vocês me ajudaram, eu tinha trocado o monitor para ver se era isso, no fim não foi masdeixei o monitorzinho pequeno e velhinho que tinha, agora quero voltar meu monitor normal mas o Ubuntu liga mas não aparece nada nem o boot e no velhinho ta normal. que pode ser. [Ubuntu-BR] Roteador D-Link DI-524 - Dúvidas sob re Configuração e Uso
Olá Pessoal, tudo blz com todos? Comprei o roteador wireless indicado no assunto e tou com algumas dúvidas e peço a ajuda de vcs... No meu Ubuntu 8.10 64bites uso um modem adsl, aquele que a Telefonica manda pra gente para usar o Speedy, configurado através do ppoeconf, que nunca tive problemas pra conectar, fazendo a conexão direto qdo eu inicio o sistema... Quero saber se pra usar o D-Link DI524 é só espetar no micro e deixar o Ubuntu fazer o resto? Preciso rodar o ppoeconf novamente ou algum outro comando? Vou usar a conexão wireless do roteador pra compartilhar a banda larga com um laptop com Windows Vista... É só configurar o notebook pra acessar a rede e, no Ubuntu mexer com as configurações de rede, ou tem algum curinga nessa manga? Deu praver que sou meio analfa nesse negócio, né! André, voce pode simplesmente jogar o cabo de internet que si do modem direto no roteador e depois puxar um cabo pro pc ou então compartilhar a internet pelo Ubuintu mas pra isso você tem que ter 2 p´lacas de rede. Vai depender de COMO você vai configurar o roteador. Existem 3 opções: 1) Configuração Mamãe: você não configura nada, de forma que é só ligar os micros e começar a navegar. Seus vizinhos agradecerão... 2) Configuração Papai: você configura uma senha para login na hora de conectar. Só o Ricardão vai agradecer! 3) Configuração PitBull: você gera um certificado wpa e uma contrachave num pendrive. Daí para conectar, além do login e senha, tem de estar com o pendrive espetado para que a contrachave seja validada. Quem tentar entrar ... Deu praver que sou meio analfa nesse negócio, né! Não tem mistério. O roteador tem uma página visível pelo browser que você entra e configura como quiser, é bem intuitivo. Pois é, pelo que entendi o wireless é um roteador, mas não é modem. E o modem, não é roteador... Acho que é por isso que ele está com este problema, o Ubuntu não vai conseguir conectar se o modem não estiver conectado diretamente no PC. Há um tempo atrás me deparei com este problema. Caro Marcelo, Eu resolvo assim: Anoto a versão do kernel que desejo desinstalar e depois vou ao Gerenciador de pacotes synapitc e faço uma busca pela versão. Feito isso aparecerão os pacotes do kernel coincidentes. Salvo engano são uns 3 ou 4 pacotes (algo como linux-headers , linux-image). Aí é só marcar para remoção. It was mostly programming and we didn't get the chance to see a lot about the technology behind computers and operating systems. But at the University of West-Flanders department PIH (2007-2010), I restored all this damage. In my first semester of PC Network Technology, I had three weeks in Ubuntu, the second one was 50% Linux, 30% Windows and 20% DOS. A great experience.
