[ubuntu-art] Murrina Humanity

2009-04-04 Thread Alex Armstrong
Hey folks,

I'm the author of the theme Nine, about which I posted a couple months
back. My latest work is a re-imaging of Dark Room.

Murrina Nine VIIc Humanity (or Murrina Humanity, as it's known to its
friends) can be found here:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=102178

The reason I did not post it on the wiki is that the sheer number of
broken/ugly widgets that are endemic to dark GTK+ themes, especially in
OpenOffice, make it unlikely to be considered for inclusion with Ubuntu.
(If this is fallacious, please undeceive me.) The reason I am posting
here is that despite its shortcomings, the theme was made with this
community in mind. I hope some of you may use or find use for it.

Regards,
Alex

Hi SwissTeam

I think, to put Ubuntu's name on the map isn't it the nicest area to
start a Release Party, otherwise we'll have a place to start first time
a Release Party in the main-city of Switzerland. On of the best 4 me
would be this combination of things like Social and Free near the
street. And I hope it'll be near enough to adduct the crowd. ;)

cheers

AptOnCD is the software to use, but you would have had to create a CD
beforehand.

I agree that this is the *right* way of doing things. but, if he has
not created a .iso with AptOnCD, he can still get away with it. Copy
all your files from the backup location to /var/cache/apt/archives/
and update the filelist to the latest one available. Then, go to
Synaptic and install the metapackage for Ubuntu Studio. This will
install most of the applications from your downloaded cache, and
download any newer ones from the net, if the .deb has been upgraded.
You will have to do this:

sudo cp /path/to/your/backup/ /var/cache/apt/archives/

And then good old Synaptic to do the rest. :)

Hope this helps.

 Thanks,
Assuming it is the same version of Ubuntu Studio, do the following steps
- dump your backup into '/var/cache/apt/archives/'
- Run $ sudo aptitude update (This will require internet access - as
you dont have the latest repo listing which are stored in
/var/lib/apt/lists/)
- Run $ sudo aptitude upgrade ( This will update all the 'currently'
installed packages to the latest version available in the repo, if you
have the same deb version in your backup it wont require to download
the newer version from the internet)

You still will have to install those packages which are not installed
by default during the basic install but you have installed them after
installation , in your previous system.

This is the most efficient way.
Moz, you don't need to write the ISO on the CD. Create the iso, keep it
on a flash drive + the deb installer of aptoncd from /var/cache/apt/archives

Now install Ubuntu Studio again. Goto you flash drive, install
aptoncd.deb manually by double clicking on the deb file. Now when
aptoncd is installed, goto SystemAdministrationAptoncd and then click
on Restore button. Select the iso from the location where you stored it.
Click on restore and its back to the repository. It even updates the
index. :)

so here's the problem with this: dpkg will process the .deb files in order.
therefore, if a previous package has a later package as a dependancy, it
will refuse to install. In theory, if you keep running the command enough
times, all packages will get installed. In practice, I have completely
buggered an install (of Sidux) trying to do this :-D
It might work, but you may want to read up about it before trying it - I
have done evil things to my system trying this in the past.
Best of luck,

I've not had any luck getting the server iso to boot from a usb
pen-drive, it tends to fail when it looks for the cd drive! However! The
netboot iso does work. There is a little gotcha with the viglen though
with the latest images, in that it doesn't have the required drivers for
the HD controller.

There is a workaround, as described in the bug report here
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/318805) (thanks

I did this on my Viglen the other day! It's a small amount of a pain in

yey!

The computer fair at the sports centre (2nd sunday of month) usually
has an Infopoint display for foss information and including Ubuntu
(yours truly).

The Internet cafe next to the hairdressers (bottom of 3M tower) has
two PCs - they have been ubuntu for about 6 months.

You did hear about the thieves and vagabonds in Princess Square last
summer nicking an (Ubuntu) netbook?
see
http://www.theopensourcerer.com/2008/08/26/desperate-demand-for-the-elonex-webbook/

Even *today*, a first: I was in Princess Square mid morning in my
Ubuntu baseball cap, and passed someone wearing a Ubuntu fleece. I
just had time to say how much I liked it as we rushed past each other.

I heard about the French Gendarmerie saying they saved 50 million
Euros by using Ubuntu, so I contacted my local councilors suggesting
they consider similar. I received a reply: 'Thank you for your e-mail,
and this interesting information. I am happy to raise this matter with
the Council. We are always looking for efficiencies, particularly in
these times.'

I live in hope
:-)

There is a local contact group bracklux - sorry it is a yahoogroup,
but if anyone wanted to arrange local meets in town this would help
http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/bracklux/?tab=s

Also there is an entry for Bracknell in the Ubuntu user world map

Also there is an entry for Bracknell in the Ubuntu user world map
 http://www.flippinsweetdude.com/maps/index.php

Waterstones in Bracknell has a number of ubuntu books. They are all
arranged neatly at comfortable eye level. :-)

Bracknell does have things going on.

Clearly it does!
Never realised how much before. Will have to keep my eyes open in the
future. And saying about the hairdressers near 3M That's where I get
my hair cut... No idea the computers ran ubuntu... Learn something new
everyday (or in this case, 10 new things).

The Dundee Council has been running linux server since 1995 and so far i
believe its the only council in the UK although they have had a few other
councils interested in the idea.

The main IT guy did a presentation last year on what they are using.
although they still running win xp clients. they may be moving open office
in on client side in near future.

[Ubuntu-BR] Upgrade Ubuntu 6.10 para 8.10

2009-04-04 Thread Daniel Picon

Enfim, vale a pena? Se sim, como faria? Trocaria as fontes do apt e
daria um dist-upgrade??

Atualmente, apenas troquei as fontes do apt para fontes old-releases e
fiz um update e upgrade.

Bom,é isso aí.

Abraço a todos

Daniel

2009-04-04 Thread Xisberto

Taí a importância do LTS, vc conseguiria dar upgrade do 6.06 pro 8.04.

boot scripts (/etc/rc.local).

Taí a importância do LTS, vc conseguiria dar upgrade do 6.06 pro 8.04.

Enfim, vale a pena? Se sim, como faria? Trocaria as fontes do apt e
  daria um dist-upgrade??

Atualmente, apenas troquei as fontes do apt para fontes old-releases e
  fiz um update e upgrade.

  Bom,é isso aí.

  Abraço a todos

  Daniel

nokia ainda nao disponibilizou e acho que nao vai pra Linux.

)
2. gconf-editor - apps - popup_location

[Bug 354243] [NEW] Nautilus fails to browse any share on network to which Iomega Home Network Hard Drive (MDHD500-N, firmware K108.W15) is attached.

2009-04-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gvfs

Nautilus fails to browse any share on network to which Iomega Home
Network Hard Drive (MDHD500-N, firmware K108.W15) is attached.

Might be 209520 or 296673 - but this should make diagnosis easier.

Reproduced bug using Ubuntu i386 distribution disks for 7.10, 8.04,
8.04.2, 8.10 and 9.04 beta - in other word, standard Ubuntu
configuration. The Iomega NAS had immediately prior had a firmware
upgrade with subsequent hard reset. This should be reproducible by
maintainers.

The Iomega server is SAMBA or SAMBA-like, with a rudimentary html
interface. It is normal for end users to not have control over all
server settings in many situations, so this is still a gvfs bug.

As with similar bugs, all SAMBA shares are reported correctly with
findsmb and smbclient, and can be mounted using smb4k.

[Bug 354243] Re: Nautilus fails to browse any share on network to which Iomega Home Network Hard Drive (MDHD500-N, firmware K108.W15) is attached.

2009-04-04 Thread Stephen D Kamm
Just want to make sure it's understood that smbtree doesn't browse the
share when run under specific conditions outlined above - particularly
the fact that it was in a live CD session. Under my current, evolving
(implementing work-arounds) configuration, smbtree does produce output,
listed below.

Are there bad interactions among multiple SAMBA servers that cannot be
isolated to configuration of single server? Given that many network
devices use embedded SAMBA servers, shouldn't Nautilus, hence gvfs, be
extremely robust in browsing and mounting shares?

I post the following (from current, not-controlled-experiment
configuration), noting the LANMAN error message, and hoping extraneous
information does not muddy diagnosis; but stand by previous experimental
results - Iomega NAS should have been browse-able from a live CD
session, and was not:

2009-04-04 Thread Jakob Unterwurzacher
Public bug reported:

This is at Dapper.

The bug:
/var/run/munin (Munin's lock directory) is on tmpfs, so it obiously does not
persist across reboots. It is not recreated by the cron job. This makes the
munin-update cron job spit these errors:

readline() on closed filehandle LOCK at /usr/share/perl5/Munin.pm line 396.
Use of uninitialized value in pattern match (m//) at /usr/share/perl5/Munin.pm

Workaround: After *every* reboot do:
mkdir /var/run/munin chown munin /var/run/munin

[Bug 354889] Re: [jaunty] i845 xorg crashes upon playing video

Which version of xserver-xorg-video-intel are you using?
I found that using xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu4 causing bugs with
i915.
Maybe xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu3 is to blame, because when I
don't use any of this packages everything works fine.

[Bug 354972] [NEW] apt-transport-https: large packages timeout after 120s, even while progress is being made

2009-04-04 Thread Steve Beattie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

As part of testing, I am occasionally installing large packages from
private-ppas on launchpad, which makes use of https and apt-transport-
https. While doing so, I get timeouts like the following:

  Get:1 https://private-ppa.launchpad.net hardy/main PACKAGE 9.1.0-6 [63.4MB]
  Err https://private-ppa.launchpad.net hardy/main PACKAGE 9.1.0-6
Operation timed out after 12 milliseconds with 13942784 out of 63370760
bytes received
  Failed to fetch
https://ID:passw...@private-ppa.launchpad.net/PROJECT/ubuntu/pool/main/P/PACKAGE/PACKAGE_9.1.0-6_i386.deb
Operation timed out after 12 milliseconds with 13942784 out of 63370760
bytes received
E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with
--fix-missing?

Manually wget'ing the package and installing succeeds, and I also do not
see similar timeouts when downloading (asbsurdly) large packages over
http.

Looking at the source code, in methods/https.cc we have the following
code:

   // set timeout
   int timeout = _config-FindI(Acquire::http::Timeout,120);
   curl_easy_setopt(curl, CURLOPT_TIMEOUT, timeout);
   curl_easy_setopt(curl, CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT, timeout);

Quoting the curl_easy_setopt(3) manpage:

   CURLOPT_TIMEOUT
Pass a long as parameter containing the maximum time in seconds
that you allow the libcurl transfer operation to take.

Note that it's not a timeout of inactivity, it's just a maximum time the
transfer can take. This does not match the behavior of method/http.cc
where HttpMethod::Go sets the same timeout value on a select() call on
any of the open filedescriptors; this only gets triggered if none of the
connections make any progress by the timeout time.

It seems to me that the http and https behaviors ought to be made
consistent, or else the https method ought to honor a separate
Acquire::https::Timeout setting.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
Package: apt-transport-https 0.7.20.2ubuntu5

  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I was happily using Jaunty Beta (Kubuntu) until tonight with the latest
updates KDE would not start.
I think there was a kernel update.

Eventually I realised that the Nvidia driver was not loading so I edited
xorg.conf as follows:-
  Section Device
  Identifier Configured Video Device
  # Driver nvidia
  Driver nv

  and now KDE works.

How do I get nvidia working again?
+
+ EDIT: I found the problem.
+
+ The update included a kernel update but Grub was not updated correctly.
+ There was no Grub entry for the new kernel.
+ Fixed that and now nvidia drivers are working again.
