Awesome! :D We need your assistance and guidance on how the release party should be conducted. And it would be really nice if ubuntu provides DVD's,stickers and goodies which can be distributed during the release party. A release party is... well, a party! We celebrate the release of the latest version of Ubuntu. Before party: * Create an event on the loco.ubuntu.com portal (I can help here). * Announce the event on local lug mailing lists, post on facebook/google+/ twitter. Provide the link to the event page on loco.ubuntu.com, so that they can indicate their availability. During the party: * Introduce the latest version of Ubuntu, its new features, etc. * Distribute the '.iso' files. Ubuntu (Canonical) stopped shipping CDs to individuals and now only approved LoCo community get the CDs. So while we are in the process of reapproval, we do not get any goodies to distribute, sorry. * Help install Ubuntu to people who get their laptops/mobile devices. * Last, but not the least... have fun! Cake/beer helps. :-D * Take lots of pics. After the party: * Make a detailed report of the event (Who introduced, how many copies of iso file distributed, how many people installed Ubuntu, other specifics). * Upload pics and report on the community wiki page. Or send it to us (contacts AT ubuntu-in DOT info). We will do the needful. Rigved is conducting a party here in Mumbai [0]. I think he won't mind giving you some pointers. [Bug 1167166] [NEW] flashplugin-installer fails to download adobe-flashplugin
Public bug reported: Since last 3-4 updates of flashplugin-installer on both my installs of Ubuntu 12.04 and Kubuntu 12.10, I am facing the following problem: 1. 'sudo apt-get upgrade' shows that a new version of flashplugin-installer is available (along with update to other packages) 2. When I go ahead with the update, it downloads the flashplugin-installer from 'http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal-updates/multiverse' 3. Further it shows 'Preparing to replace flashplugin-installer ... (using ...)' 4. Then 'Unpacking replacement flashplugin-installer ...' 5. The next line is 'flashplugin-installer: downloading http://archive.canonical.com/pool/partner/a/adobe-flashplugin/adobe-flashplugin_11.2.202.280.orig.tar.gz' - Here it remains stuck for sometime. I remember earlier it used to show the process of downloading the adobe-flashplugin at this stage, but not since this problem is occuring. 6. After remaining stuck at the above message for some time, it shows 'Installing from local file /tmp/tmpzjbHF5.gz' and proceeds with installation of other packages and exits. I don't know if the new version of the plugin is installed or does it revert back to the last installed version of the plugin. I guess the link in the installer package is correct because it shows up the new package when I open the link in the browser. Also, I have no problem playing flash files in the browser like viewing videos on youtube. 'apt-cache policy flashplugin-installer' gives the following output: flashplugin-installer: Installed: 11.2.202.280ubuntu0.12.10.1 Candidate: 11.2.202.280ubuntu0.12.10.1 Version table: *** 11.2.202.280ubuntu0.12.10.1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal-updates/multiverse amd64 Packages 500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal-security/multiverse amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 11.2.202.243ubuntu1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal/multiverse amd64 Packages ** Affects: flashplugin-nonfree (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1167166 Title: flashplugin-installer fails to download adobe-flashplugin To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+bug/1167166/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The event outline is available on the wiki https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuCommunityWeek, and a draft schedule of topics and presenters will soon be announced. This is where you come in! Are you a mover and shaker in an Ubuntu community? Do you help organize events, presentations? Do you help spread Ubuntu where you live? Do you have sage advice for others to help them along their journey to building stronger communities or just to get more involved? This is an open call for presenters that can help with any of the scenarios described below. The idea behind the event is to help people engage with their Ubuntu community, to catalyze Ubuntu community growth, and to help make existing Ubuntu communities even better. [ubuntu-in] Fwd: Ubuntu Open Week
For everyone's notice. Anyone from the community wanting to take up a session? -- Forwarded message -- From: Amber Graner akgra...@ubuntu.com Date: Fri, Apr 22, 2011 at 7:28 PM Subject: Ubuntu Open Week To: Ubuntu local community team (LoCo) contacts loco-conta...@lists.ubuntu.com, Ubuntu-Women ubuntu-wo...@lists.ubuntu.com, Ubuntu Developers ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com, Submit and discuss any Ubuntu related news stories ubuntu-news-t...@lists.ubuntu.com Hi all, I know everyone is insanely busy at this time in the cycle; however, your assistance is needed as Open Week is less than 2 weeks away and the schedule is still *very* open. Please take a look at the schedule (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek) and lets see what we can do to bump this thing up a notch. Remember the target audience for Ubuntu Open Week is the *End User*, so think about what sessions can be offered to help users (all of us) to become even better, more efficient and effective. Each of us has knowledge we can share through what we do for the Ubuntu project, whether it is explaining what the council you are on does and what it means to the community, how does your Loco Team work, a QA session with your team so that end users understand what you do and how they can be part of that picture. What about a session on screencasting howto's, Filing bugs, testing and more. There are so many things to share and we share them everyday in some capacity. How about introductions to the derivative distro's such as Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, and more. If you are on the Server, Desktop, Kernel, Foundations, QA, DX, Design or other Team consider giving a Question and Answer Session. As mentioned above if you are on the Community Council, Forums Council, IRC Council, LoCo Council do you have an hour where you can talk about issues and overviews related to those areas and let the community know how to engage these areas better. What about projects such Beginners Team, Docs Team, Spread Ubuntu, Ubuntu Marketing etc, let's reintroduce some of these to the community again and share those things during open week. Please take a moment to see if you can carve out 1 (one) hour of your time to give to help end users learn more about the ins and outs Ubuntu and the community that makes it what it is. Share your knowledge. Don't worry if you haven't given a session before we can help you get started. If 14 people or teams of people can step up and give a session for open week this would be *awesome*! Take a look at the schedule (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek) and either let me know where to add your session or fill it in on the time table (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek/Timetable). If you have any questions, please email myself or Jorge Castro or ping either of us on IRC (akgraner or jcastro). I know I still have a lot to learn and I personally look forward to open week more than any other Ubuntu week because I always learn something new that helps me become a better end user and Ubuntu community member. Thank you in advance for those who will give sessions and those who will attend as every session leader and participant makes open week successful. with much gratitude and appreciation, ~ Amber :-D Amber Graner//akgraner// http://akgraner.com/ http://www.ubuntu-user.com/Online/Blogs/Amber-Graner-You-in-Ubuntu Need help with Ubuntu? These should contain all your updates and fixes in translations done since the release date. I'd like to ask teams to test them and provide an indication that they've done so by following some simple steps and submitting a signoff, so that we know that translations have been successfully tested. Simply follow the instructions in this page and add your team's signoff in the table at the bottom: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/LanguagePackUpdatesQA The deadline for the testing is the 25th of March (in a week's time). After that, we'll update the language packs we've received feedback for into maverick-updates, so that all users can benefit from the new translations and fixes. Remember that you'll have to to enable the maverick-proposed repository to get these updates: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed Notes - Remember that now you can subscribe to the iCal feed to stay up to date with language pack updates and better coordinate your work: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MaverickReleaseSchedule Notice that as commented on the mailing list recently, we've experienced https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/731298. I don't know if anything in my original post gave the idea of splitting up, but my only intention with this was to bring more people to our ongoing efforts in the Indian LoCo [0]. Actually I myself was a bit annoyed by the fact that there were quite a few other India related groups in launchpad which rarely communicate/co-ordinate with us. When the hands are few, it is always a good idea to work together. My intention was not to create 'yet another group' but to give incentive to the people to come to this existing group. As I mentioned before, there are 1179 direct members in our launchpad team and hundreds subscribed to the mailing list, but only a handful of them are actively involved in team activities. But as others have rightly pointed out, the resources required for this kind of effort would outweigh its benefits. As an afterthought, I think it would also cause a sort-of-alienation among those who are not approved as members. [ubuntu-in] Membership to ubuntu-in?
While crawling the ubuntu wiki today, I stumbled upon these two[0][1] wiki pages on ubuntu-in members and ubuntu-in promoters[2]. The crux was to acknowledge the contribution towards local community by giving them @ubuntu-in.org email aliases (akin to ubuntu membership). Somehow, I think the project didn't take off as no activity is seen after late 2008. Should the project be revived? I am inclined to say yes, as that something extra always encourages to be more involved with the community. If the administrator/member of that group is reading this mail, please share your ideas/experiences if you would like to. That means that for instance if you use Ubuntu 10.10, when you'll boot the Ubuntu 11.04 Live CD you'll have an option to upgrade (without losing your documents and installed applications). Besides this change, there's also a redesigned partitioner: Sounds very encouraging as the horror stories I have been hearing about usual release upgrades has always made me do a fresh install every time I wanted to bump up my distro version. [ubuntu-in] Ubuntu Global Jam on 1-3 April
Hello all, As many of you might have already heard/read about [0], Ubuntu Global Jam (UGJ) [1] will be held from 1st to 3rd of April this year for Natty release cycle. UGJ is a global event (as the name suggests) where all the local communities (LoCos) around the world participate to make Ubuntu better. There are many ways to get involved as mentioned on the wiki page [1]. Though it is preferable to have this event organised in person, it is also possible to conduct this event on irc. Considering that organising such event in person on a pan-India level might be too cumbersome, I suggest we have a irc event this time. If there are enough people (read 3 or more) willing to gather in a particular city, they can also conduct an in-person event in parallel. For the irc event I suggest we gather at #ubuntu-in channel where more experienced among us can make themselves available in guiding others to triage bugs, documentation, translations, testing, etc. The intention of this mail is to invite suggestions in planning UGJ India event. In short, lets rock together and make this Indian community shine globally. :) [0] http://www.jonobacon.org/2011/02/15/ubuntu-global-jam-call-for-events/ [1] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGlobalJam -- Regards, Nitesh Mistry | www.mistrynitesh.com PGP key id: A6FEF696 | 'geekosopher' on freenode irc pgpd4EybtSfaU.pgp Description: PGP signature -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

From the past 2-3 months of activity, I propose the following names for being LoCo contacts and carrying the flag further. Comments welcome. [in no specific order] 1. Nigel Babu 2. Nitesh Mistry 3. It categorizes the updates which are core and necessary. You can always discard the updates you don't need (which are numbered as 4,5 and 6) and come lower down; indeed most of them are not even required. If it is critical update, it is labeled as 1. Even Ubuntu and Debian for that matter categorise updates in to 'security', 'recommended' and 'miscellaneous'. You see different update notifier icon in the system notification area for security and other updates. May be Mint has further categorised them in to 6 levels. -- Regards, Nitesh Mistry | www.mistrynitesh.com PGP key id: A6FEF696 | 'geekosopher' on freenode irc pgpmqFpfm283h.pgp Description: PGP signature -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

Safe Upgrade = apt-get upgrade : if upgrading any package causes removal of another package, such package is held back. Full Upgrade = apt-get dist-upgrade : all packages are upgraded, even if upgrading any package caused another package to be removed. In both cases, the system is on the same release (10.04). It does not upgrade to 10.10. I daily do 'apt-get dist-upgrade' on my lucid machine, and I can confirm it is still lucid and not maverick. :) Just writing out of my own experience. Ideally it should have failed as copying anything to a directory outside *your* home directory (eg. '/home/njain') requires 'sudo'. So either your command should have been: $ cp -R /media/Elements/home/njain /home/your-user-id or $ sudo cp -R /media/Elements/home/njain /home or you have set world write permission to your root or /home directory which is highly undesirable. In any case, I don't think that command should have caused the sound problem. Do you remember any error or warning messages being displayed on terminal when you gave that command? The error I saw in rhythmbox is configured audiosink bin1 not found, IIRC. Try running rhythmbox from the terminal, like: $ rhythmbox and post the output. It might help finding the real cause of this problem. Also try googling the error line that you find in the output. -- Regards, Nitesh Mistry | www.mistrynitesh.com PGP key id: A6FEF696 | 'geekosopher' on freenode irc pgpZNDc8SB0TL.pgp Description: PGP signature -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
