Hi All,

As you might have known we need to renew our LoCo approval. I am busy

ready to continue maintaining the servers, mailing lists and all other

(organising events, meetings, evangelism, workshops etc), we need some
volunteers.

From the past 2-3 months of activity, I propose the following names

[in no specific order]

1. Nigel Babu
2. Nitesh Mistry
3. Manish [sinha?]

check the To and CC list before sending, and what you sent was a real

Please do not directly reply to a digest mail, but remove the unwanted
portions of the quoted text and change the subject line to that of the
original mail you're replying to. Replying to a digest mail without
changing the subject line or trimming off serves no purpose and nobody
is going to bother to reply you.

It took so long time because it has to download 1267 packages and
replace the old ones with the new ones. It is because you had installed
such huge number of packages in your earlier version and thus all those
packages needs to be replaced. On a normal 256kbps connection, it takes
10 hours to download such huge number of packages, and this is why
downloading the alternate-cd iso and upgrading from it is faster but
anyways if you have installed extra packages then you have to download
and upgrade them some time.

yes the the waiting time is there but it helps users who have limited

The problem is not the Cost involved or the time but the 6 months
release cycle of Ubuntu that makes a shipped CD becomes obsolete pretty
fast unless it is a LTS release. Secondly, punching CDs locally is much
cheaper and faster than shipit. It also encourages local resources to
become aware of Ubuntu and GNU/Linux.
 ok.
but by goodies we also mean stikers, badges, cups, t-shirt or just
anything with ubuntu flavour in it. These goodies will be given to
participants in our event. We request you to help us with anything.
These goodies are a source of inspiration for GNU/Linux.

Am afraid Canonical does not send free goodies like badges, cups or tees
even to loco teams. These are merchandise items and max possible is they
may be available for lesser price. We used to get limited number of
stickers and sometimes pens but am not sure even about them. It is very
economical to print stickers ourselves as we did during foss.in 2007. If
you're interested we would be able to share the sticker designs with
you. But there are certain design guidelines when creating derivatives
out of Ubuntu logo, please read them carefully and follow them if you
are going to design yourselves.

Am not sure whether amachu aka Sri Ramados is a part of this list but
you can find him in Ubuntu Tam (Tamil) Team. He is aware of resources
for punching CDs locally as well as goodies like pens, etc.

Re: [ubuntu-in] GPG Key and Fingerprint

2009-04-03 Thread Parthan SR
ambika divya wrote:
Can any one explain me .what is that terms ?

This query is not regarding Ubuntu , i am sorry .
But I am really want to know .

GPG Keys serve two purposes, the main purpose is to encrypt data/files
and securely transfer them to someone whom you trust without others
being to sneak in the middle, and vice versa. The whole idea is to have
a pair of keys, one is private and the other is public. You can share
you public key with your friends, to whom you want to send and receive
files, and also get their public keys.

Take a scenario when your friend X wants to share a secret letter with
you. He wants only you to read it and not anybody else to. So he
encrypts the secret letter file using your public key. Now to read that
letter one needs to have the corresponding private key to decrypt the
letter, which only you have (remember it is your *private* key). So he
sends you the encrypted letter and you decrypt it using your private key.

Similarly if you want to share something with your close friend, you
have his public key and hence you encrypt with his key and send him the
encrypted message across. He will use his private key to decrypt and get
the message.

To know more read,
[1] http://aplawrence.com/Basics/gpg.html
[2] http://madboa.com/geek/gpg-quickstart/
[3] http://www.gnupg.org/

The second purpose is to make a chain of trust by getting the keys
signed. For example, if I have my keys signed by few members who are
also Ubuntu members, then for a third person who is interested in
finding my recognition and trust within Ubuntu circles it might serve as
proof that am trusted as my keys have been signed by them. Signing of
keys happens by physically sharing your public key and fingerprint, and
importantly proving your claimed identity. You can search for my public
keys and find out who all have signed my key and who they are really ;-)

[ubuntu-in] [X-Post] Freenode is looking for donations

2009-03-28 Thread Parthan SR
- Forwarded Content --

I will try to keep this brief and to the point. This message has been
cross posted to several lists which will explain why you might get
more than one copy. I hope you find it informative too. Send all
flames to me, not to the lists.

I'm taking off the other hats I wear for a moment to ask for you or
your company's support of Freenode [1] (technically the Peer-Directed
Projects Center or PDPC) now based in the United Kingdom. For those
that don't know, Freenode is an IRC [2] network supporting Open Source
and Free Software communities globally. Another PDPC activity is the
annual FOSSCON conference in the fall. PDPC is specifically [3]
raising funds in order to be recognized by the UK as an official
charitable organization. This status has many benefits, however they
need to raise a certain amount of money by March, 2009. There are
just a few days left in the fundraising campaign.

Canonical Ltd. (the company created by Mark Shuttleworth that drives
Ubuntu Linux) has graciously stepped forward to provide dollar for
dollar matching, magnifying the impact of your donations to PDPC. The
fund raising goal has almost been reached but your contribution is
needed. Brainstorming by the PDPC board of directors for how to use
any funds not used for operations includes hosting live conference
events in Europe and the US, extending current services and improving
the reliability of the freenode network by hosting a few of their own
hubs and backup systems. Freenode is growing rapidly [4] supporting
up to 57,000 concurrent users up from a maximum of about 40,000 18
months ago.

Some people may not be aware that IRC is used by a huge array of Open
Source and Free Software projects. The list of groups [5] Freenode
works with is truly impressive. I feel it is not at all hyperbole to
say that the work done over freenode and OFTC [6] are the real-time
backbone of open source collaboration throughout the world, Coders
use the IRC network to develop applications used by millions of people
every day and provide *end user support*. If you use any open source
software you may be an indirect beneficiary of the services Freenode
provides. I encourage those who are interested to try launching an
IRC client such as Pidgin [7] and see for yourself. You won't be
sorry you did.

While I have used Freenode for many years, this year I too became a
contributor for the first time. For a one time contribution
http://freenode.net/pdpc_donations.shtml of as little as $8 you can
join me in supporting Freenode and the many Open Source
projects they serve.

Thanks for your consideration,

Here is a simple setup of mine which I have currently with Airtel. I
used to have a PPPoE on router when I had BSNL and the modem was broken
that I couldn't configure it.
I prefer the modem to be configured to connect by itself.

[Internet] -- [Modem] (Configured with IP 192.168.1.0 and runs DHCP
starting from 192.168.1.1-10)- [Linksys WRT54G] (gets IP from
modem, runs DHCP from 192.168.0.100-110 and has internal IP 192.168.0.0)

I have turned on encryption for the wireless as well as the MAC filter.
I haven't fiddled around with any other configuration on the router.

Good to know that you want to experiment around but you need to
understand the fundamental difference between distros and how they
manage the softwares around. Until you are going to install packages
from another distribution which either derives out of your distribution
or derives out of the same distribution as yours, you are going to left
with a broken system. Nobody would prefer to call installing packages
from random distribution into yours as experiment and what it is really
called has already been mentioned in one of the replies.

Secondly, if you want to experiment with upstream bleeding edge KDE,
then checkout the latest source of KDE and try to build it up. And
that'd be the best way to experiment.

[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu-In Mailing List Guidelines

2009-01-08 Thread Parthan SR
Hi all,

Here comes the monthly dose of Mailing List Guidelines followed by this
mailing list, which from now will land up every month second week on
your inbox. The original copy of the same is available at
http://ubuntu-in.info/wiki/index.php/MailingList_Guidelines

--

Mailing List Guidelines

   1. Use a proper subject line, something related to the query/topic
you are about to post and which will give an idea to the readers
what the post might be about
   2. Do not troll http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll in the
  mailing list
   3. Use [OT] for off-topic, non-technical discussions. But, don't
misuse this to start flame wars or to troll in the mailing list.
Off-Topic only includes topics related to computers, computer
related technology, programming and programming related
technologies. Please forbid from discussing personal, religion and
politics in the name of Off-Topic.
   4. Do not top-post http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top-posting.
   5. Do not over-quote and trip the message to exactly the part of
previous post that you are currently replying to. Please remove
the signatures from the previous posts when you are quoting.
   6. Do not post HTML messages. Set your mailing client to send text
  only mails.
   7. Do not recycle messages
   8. Do not send attachments. If you want to post any output or
configuration file, please use a pastebin to copy the contents to
it and post the url link.
   9. Do not attach obnoxious, nonsensical legal disclaimers. If your
company uses disclaimers, don't use your company ID for the
  mailing list.
  10. Do not reply to a digest. If you want to reply, please trim the
  post and post it new.
  11. Search for answers for your questions/problems in google.com or
any other search engine before posting your query to the mailing
list. If you want to suggest something as mentioned in a web site,
please provide the link for the same instead of posting the entire
  content from the site.
  12. Do not post messages in all capital letters. Mails in CAPS is
considered rude and is similar to shouting during a conversation.
  13. Don't send season's greetings or birthday invites to the group.
  Its not mailing list etiquette.

As ideal query contains the following information,

   1. What is the problem being faced?
   2. Information about the environment the user is in, like hardware
specifications for hardware issues, version of software, release
version of Ubuntu and source of the software for software issues.
   3. What was expected to happen?
   4. What happened instead?
   5. What are the steps that was taken to solve the problem or at least
to find where the problem is?
   6. What were the solutions found out, which worked/partially
  worked/didn't work?

These information help us to understand your environment and the problem
you're reporting, aiding us to look for similar reported problems and
solutions if available. Please ensure that you provide us these
information when asking us for help.

Guidelines aren't rules, but are suggestions which helps us to maintain
better readability, proper archives, efficient bandwidth usage, etc.
Most of them are strictly followed by the mailing list and we request
you to help us by following them.

Well, mailing lists exists to enhance discussion and mutual help between
people interested on a topic. This mailing list caters to interests
related to Ubuntu. For discussing or seeking help about a particular
programming language, especially when it is a very generalized, language
specific and unrelated to Ubuntu questions, it is better to be asked in
the mailing list catering to that particular programming language or in
a wide-topic mailing lists like LUGs. It's not just because it is not ON
TOPIC here, but also because the chance of [1] getting a meaningful
reply, [2] involving a discussion of people having more clue about it
and [3] of the question and it's reply helping people searching for the
same at future instance and finding it, is more in such a mailing list
than here.

If you're looking for quick reply, you should rather be jumping to

But there seems to be a problem with the view of Firefox - when in open

minimize, maximize and close icons) and the menu toolbar (the one that
has File Edit ... etc) remain hidden. I can access the file menu by alt

So any idea what could be wrong.

The Firefox window has blown itself out of the screen area, which just
means it has become a size bigger than what your screen can accommodate.
Please try whether you can grab hold of any of the corners by moving the
browser here and there. If you could, then just drag it to reduce the
size and again drag it into your screen area. Then position it and
resize the window as per your wish. Am not sure about pressing the
maximize button again or whether you need to press the unmazimize button
before trying this. It used to happen to me in Hardy but I haven't faced
it with any window in Intrepid. You can also try turning off compiz if

[Bug 268949] Re: Volume control applet does not handle keyboad up and down on Intrepid Ibex

2008-11-05 Thread Parthan SR
I am facing the same issue in Ubuntu Inrepid. I have a Volume mute, up
and down keys in my keyboard, in addition to having a Fn+Esc=Mute,
Fn+F2=Vol Up and Fn+F1=Vol Down key combination as well.

When playing some media in a player, be it Rhythmbox or Totem, I could
use either of it to reduce the Volume as in the volume provided by the
Volume/Sound applet in the notification area as well. But now, when I
use these buttons I still get a Volume applet popup, but this is not
anyway relating to the notification area's Volume applet. As a result,
when I press the keyboard keys though the popup shows volume to be
changing, there is no actual change in the Master volume. Thus my
keyboard volume buttons are actually of no use in altering the volume. I
had to use the notification area volume applet every time I want to
change the volume.

Am attaching my lspci -vvnn output to the bug report. Am not sure which
package does the sound/volume applet falls into. Please let me know if
it requires additional information.

/etc/network/interfaces file too check which of the interfaces are
present in the file and what needs to be handled by it. Initially I was
switching between wired interface (eth0) and my wireless interface
(eth1) and then NM was handling it perfectly. In between I had to use
pppoe to connect to internet through eth0 for a few days and I suspect
it to have made my eth0 to be manually set. When I returned back to my
original swapping between eth0 and eth1, NM found an entry in interfaces
file for eth0 and hence didn't get initialized as it was being handled
otherwise. (I do not turn on eth1/wireless when am using wired
connection). Hence NM had no interfaces to handle and hence wasn't
showing the applet.

When I manually started NM, it had to force load the applet as well and
as NM by itself wasn't handling the interface eth0, it had no interfaces
to display using nm-applet and hence it was completely disabled.

Also I came to know that System Administration Network menu option
has been removed in Intrepid. But, I wonder how we will handle network
management through a GUI otherwise?

[Bug 290973] Re: not connected to network when booting

2008-10-30 Thread Parthan SR
At last found the problem. In my /etc/network/interfaces, I had an entry for
eth0 as
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet manual

On commenting these 2 lines, as well as the entry for ppp connection
which I had been using a while ago, network manager is able get
connected when booting/logging in. Am not sure what set the eth0 to
manual, may be it happened when using ppp.

Closing this issue as it might be something wrong with my system and not
a generally happening bug.

[Bug 290973] [NEW] not connected to network when booting

2008-10-29 Thread Parthan SR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Since the latest update I performed yesterday (Intrepid RC updates I
believe), networking has completely gone off. When I boot the system,
eth0 is up but dhcp request in not being made and hence am not assigned
an IP. Also, the Network Manager applet is not appearing on the
notification area.

I have to manually run dhclient to get an IP address and again manually
restart /etc/init.d/NetowrkManager, where the NM applet appears but
shows an exclamation icon and doesn't activate any of the menu items.

Also, the System Administration Network menu item is no more
available and hence I do not have a GUI way to configure my network
settings. Thus my networking experience wrt to wired networking is in a
pretty bad situation as of now, though am able to workaround by manually
running dhclient every time to get connected.

So far am having problems only with Wired network, as wireless was
working fine yesterday at home. Will check it again today and update.

On a additional note, SCIM works only when your current focus is in a

[Bug 285756] Re: simple bug in Firefox preferencie s - Advance Tab (bug simples nas Preferências do Fi refox - Aba Avançado)

2008-10-19 Thread Parthan SR
Thank you for taking your time to report this bug and help make Ubuntu
better. Your bug description is not clear that we can't understand what
you mean to be a bug. Do you mean that in Edit Preferences Advanced
Updates, the Firefox updates are disabled while the other two
(Installed Add ons and Search Engines) are not disabled? Do you mean to
say that when you had marked Ask what to do for Firefox updates, it
becomes disabled the next time you check?

Please check out bug #263566 which reports of similar issue. If you can
confirm whether you are reporting the same issue here, I can mark this
bug to be a duplicate of the bug.

But, as an information, Firefox updates happen through the distributions
package update mechanism and not through the Firefox's update option
present in the Advanced Preferences. This is to ensure that an upstream
update do not break the changes being done in Ubuntu, and hence updates
to Firefox through Ubuntu's package mechanism are suggested.

Biswajit Dutta Baruah wrote:
 My questions:
 1. If I install this banshee-1 package am I going to have two versions
 of banshee?

if you haven't installed the non-PPA version then you will have only
one version. If you're planning to continue use the PPA version please
remove the main repos Banshee out. But, are you sure that the PPA
version is going to be maintained?
 2. When I upgrade to Intrepid, will the banshee that I install auto
 upgrade to the new version?

When you run a distribution upgrade, it is going to comment out all
custom added repositories like PPAs, so it won't go through the upgrade
at all. After the upgrade you will still have the things from the older
release's PPAs hanging around. You have then upgrade your PPAs to the
current release by uncommenting them and changing them to point to the
current release PPAs.

Hope this answers your queries. HTH :)

When I restarted my machine and check again that the option is disabled

Much simpler solution - Ask BSNL to set the Modem up to connect by
itself and run DHCP on the modem. Thus all you need is to allow your
modem to connect and then turn your computer ON; then there is no worry
of configuring and your Ubuntu will dynamically get an IP. Configuring
the modem to connect automatically has nothing do with what OS you have
in your computer, as least from what I know of BSNL.

 Very useful book.
Is the book available under a FOSS compatible license which allows free
sharing and distribution? If not, this is not the right place to throw
such pointers and please forbid from doing the same in future.

** I couldn't check because it asks for login/signup which I do not want
to do.

Dude, you don't want to read the book, don't read it. Don't teach me
 what's right
If you want to read the book, you have the freedom to do so and we will

and wrong. I am reading the f-ing book because I need it.

Would be nice if you could mind your language when mailing to a public
mailing list.

I kindly request you not to send such links to this mailing list in
future and to follow list guidelines. Else, we have to kindly show you
the door. Thank you.

 Hi all,

I have already localised MSWLogo (Windows Logo) into Kannada
 (http://www.vishvakannada.com/KannadaLogo)

Did you officially get the permission from the copyright owners of the
logo before working on a derivative of it? If not, please let them know
as soon as possible and do not publish or share the modified logo until
they approve you. Else, you will get caught in a copyright infringement
deep shit, especially because you are dealing with a MS owned logo.
Now I am trying to localise Kturtle into Kannada. I installed Kturtle
in Ubuntu. I did translate some of the important commands in
Kturtle.po into Kannada and put the file in /locale/kn folder. But I
could not see Kannada under settings. How do I go about with my task?
What are the step-by-step procoess of localising any application in
 Ubuntu?
Applications do not directly read from .po files. They also need to be
compiled to .mo file and then to a .pot file, after which the
application might be able to use them. Check out the KTurtle web site on
any information about localization of the application. Am sure there
should be pointers. You can also contact the package maintainer in
Ubuntu for that app.

May be Kartik Mistry can spell more light on the process if he is still
listening to these list mails ;)
