2008-03-27 Thread Parthan
Am reporting from Ubuntu 7.10. After following atknights fix, am able to
run the game. But it still spews out this error when run from the
terminal, though am not sure how it affects the game yet. It is also
important to have it in menu because not all people would prefer
manually adding it to the menu and setting the icon up.

Thanks for the information. I will forward this to appropriate people
and have them look at this issue. Do not be afraid. Every ship-it comes
with an official declaration from Canonical/Ubuntu which states that
this is Free Software and the receiver is legally allowed to distribute
or make copies of the CDs. It also states that Canonical has already
paid the customs charges and the receiver need not pay anything, still
customs charge are asked because the Courier guy is made to pay during
the transaction.

Can you clarify whether you got the ship-it or its held up in the
customs office? If so, ask the customs officer to check the letter which
is attached to the shipit. We got around 600 CDs during foss.in and we
paid a customs of around 1500 INR. I hope I have the copy of the letter

[ubuntu-in] [Fwd: Google Summer of Code '08

2008-03-17 Thread Parthan SR
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Forwarded, from an Indian KDE contributor.
- ---

Hi,

Its time for Google Summer of Code '08. Many of you are already
following it. But just a reminder and a friendly poke incase you
forgot all about it.

Of course, KDE will be there like previous years. Check [1] for
more details.

As a student, all you need is some enthusiasm, willingness to
contribute to KDE and Free Software in general. Knowledge of C++ is
almost taken for granted in KDE GSoC. Knowledge of Qt/KDE/PyQt
framework and programming is a definite ( huge ) plus. If you are
already a contributing code to some KDE application, firstly you r0ck,
nextly you did yourself a huge favour and have HUGE PLUS-PLUS :). It
also works if you have been sending in patches regularly. So if you
are one of them, DO submit a proposal.

There is a nice *idea* page on the KDE techbase page [2]. Feel
free to browse through that and find something that you like or you
might be able to pull off. *Strong recommendation* - Please be
creative and write your own project proposal. Nothing impresses
mentors more than your own enthusiasm to do something uber cool for
the project. It is million times better if you write your own project
proposal - may be even your own idea that is not there in the idea
page which you think might be a cool feature / addition to KDE -
instead of copying something from the idea page. Its a idea page after
all and not a proposal template page ;). Please read [3] about
certain instructions of participations in KDE GSoC. I repeat, please
read [3] before applying. It is very detailed and will mostly answer a
lot of your questions and will help you frame your proposal in much
better way.

Last year KDE GSoC participation [4] [5] was really
wonderful. It got 40 projects sanctioned by Google which probably was
the largest allocation among all the participating projects. There
were 213 proposals submitted to Google and 40 were allocated. 3 of
those 40 students were Indians, you have ask them about their
experiences. I am very sure that they have good things to talk about
the same. Since I have met Piyush and Sharan many times in recent past
after the SoC '07, I know for sure that they ( and Anirrudh, the third
guy ) loved the whole experience and had a blast.

Looking forward to your proposal. Good luck.

[ubuntu-in] Is Ubuntu messing up on QA?

2008-03-16 Thread Parthan SR
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello Ubunteros,

Although most of us know why Ubuntu is not messing up in QA, I thought
it would be better to enlighten others in the list. To start with, I
will refer to the post by Richad Johnson in his blog (and eventually to
Planet Ubuntu) about the latest breakdown in libc6 package in Ubuntu
8.04 Alpha 6 [1]

First, understand the difference between a stable release and an alpha
release and to whom it is mainly meant for. Stable release, the last
being Ubuntu 7.10 and the last LTS being Ubuntu Dapper, are meant for
Public or in Ubuntu terms, the Human Beings. Whereas, the Alpha release
are meant for the developer community to test and make sure the packages
are good enough to be pushed into a stable release. There is indeed a
warning made for you when you are dealing with Alpha releases

Pre-releases of Hardy are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a
stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional,
even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu
developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing
bugs.

So, when you download-install or upgrade your stable version of Ubuntu
to an Alpha version, you are consciously accepting the fact that things
may seriously break ad you are ready to face such things. Secondly, you
are seriously advised not to use an Alpha release for you stable system
requirements. Alpha release *is* our QA process and it is meant for
those daring devils who have passion to try them out, find and report
bugs, try fixing issues and a lot more. It is not meant for any one who
doesn't want to look at things breaking and who do not have the patience
or inclination to fix things on their own. If you do not understand
this, your rants are meaningless. Please stop saying Ubuntu broke my
system or Ubuntu doesn't work for me if you tried an alpha release
and it messed you up. Even most of us try alpha releases over a VM, or
at least have a old box to spare the occasional curses of a breakage.
Please understand and stop ranting! :)

How does this apply to the post I forwarded? Raju applied a Ubuntu

Udhay,

Please check the subject line of my mail, it didn't have a Re:. It
wasn't a reply to your mail or one to Raju's complaint, rather a general

Thank you for filing the bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please
specify the version of Ubuntu and the package against which you are

specify the bug number (bug #bugnumber) or the bug report's link in

file or happens with all the WMA files you have? Is this bug
reproducable (or happens every time)? Does the bug start to occur after

[Bug 157013] Re: Amarok resume playback feature doesn't work as expected

2008-03-13 Thread Parthan
I can reproduce the bug in amarok 1.4.7 (Ubuntu 7.10). When I play a
song, pause it in the middle, exit amarok and restart it, then the song
starts from the beginning (and I have to manually play it). Waiting for
some one to check the behavior in Amarok from upstream and confirm that
the expected behavior is to play the song from where it was paused.
Also, the bug needs to be confirmed for amarok v1.4.8 which is available
in Hardy.

2008-03-13 Thread Parthan
Sorry, I found that the resume playback option got somehow checked
off. When I checked it ON and tried the same, it was able to resume
playback from the place I paused it before quitting amarok. Hence this
bug is not reproducable in amarok v1.4.7 in Ubuntu 7.10. Closing this
bug, but feel free to re-open it if you can confirm this bug, especially

[Bug 202058] Re: Not on server list problem when adding a new buddy

2008-03-13 Thread Parthan
Thank you for filing the bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Ubuntu
7.04 Feisty has Gaim and there is an upgrade for Feisty to Ubuntu 7.10
Gutsy which has Pidgin (Gaim became Pidgin), and soon we will be moving
to 8.04 Ubuntu Hardy which has still updated Pidgin.

Regarding your bug, does this Not on Server List arise when have
something similar to having non-GTalk buddies on a GTalk account? If you
are trying to contact buddies from a different server, am afraid it is
not supported by all (Like you can not chat with buddies on Yahoo ID
inside GTalk). Please confirm whether the above case is true in yours.

[Bug 201311] Re: Back Forward buttons do not work properly

2008-03-12 Thread Parthan
Thank you for filing the bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Did you
mean to say that in Read individual mail in separate window (i.e. one
mail is opened in a separate window) and this window toolbar is
customized to have 'Forward' and 'Backward' buttons, these buttons do
not go through previous and next *read* mails?

I tried to reproduce this bug by opening a read mail in the middle of
the list, adding forward and backward buttons to the toolbar and
pressing the buttons indeed changed the mail opened in a separate window
to read mails before and after the current mail respectively. If my
understanding of your bug is correct, then am not able to reproduce your
bug.

If my understanding is wrong, can you please provide me with a clear
explanation of your reported bug and how to reproduce it? Thanks in

2008-03-11 Thread Parthan
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 200857] Re: I was having issues updating

2008-03-10 Thread Parthan
Thank you for filing the bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. As far
as I can see from the apt outputs you have pasted, you seem to miss out
the sudo part a lot of times when issuing the command. For using apt-get
or dpkg you always need to issue with sudo preceding it. At the same
time, you need not become root to do it, 'sudo' is available for you to
get super user permissions to do certain tasks. Also, you have to make
sure another service is not trying to do the same thing, like synaptic
or aptitude running when you are trying to issue apt-get command.

Regarding bug #158099, which you have mentioned, it is already marked to
have been fixed in Hardy (Ubuntu 8.04) which is now in alpha 6 and soon
to be released as LTS. Hence, it is closed as invalid. Even if this bug
is a duplicate of bug #158099, then it is also invalid.

Considering both the cases, this bug is marked as invalid but feel free
to open it again if you have more information to provide or confirm this
bug. Also, when providing output from any process or crash provide them
as individual attachments to the bug report rather than pasting them as
text into the bug report. It helps us to easily go through your bug
report. Thanks.

advise. I have also gone to the general Ubuntu Support website and had
extensive discussions, but people there are not familiar with ADSL and
PPPoE. It needs someone in India to tell me how to get this running. I
also wrote to the India Ubuntu support forum website, but no reply.
Please kindy review the below and respond as soon as you can. Because of
no electricity, the situation is very difficult. Thank you!
  ---

I installed my VSNL ADSL using the below instructions, and am now able
to get online. But I can only go to google and search. It flies all
around google without any problem or any hesitation whatsever. But it
cannot go to ANY other website besides google. Someone suggested
disabling IPv6, which I have done. But it didn't make any difference.

So strange-- I can browse freely anywhere within the google system. But
I cannot go anywhere else. And Gutsy does not recognize that it is
online--that is, I cannot use the Add/Remove or Synaptic facility to do
download updates for Gutsy. I am in Bihar, with only 1-2 hours of
electricity per day and am currently running on a gas generator with a
tenuos connection. Desperate to get this solved. Help please?

  1. Connect your ethernet wire to the port at the back of your computer.
2. Fire up the terminal and type in sudo pppoeconf
3. It should detect your modem.
4. Keep on pressing enter. Fill in your user name and password when
indicated.
5. It should be easy to stick on to defaults.
6. You should be prompted back to your terminal when it would say pppoe
loaded. Simple. That's the end of terminal.
Now go to SystemAdministrationNetworking. Click on it. You would be
asked for your password to carry out the administrative job as root. You
should be prompted to enter the following details.
1. Activate the Wired connection.
2. Highlight the wired connection and click on properties.
3. Check the box enable the connection
4. Configuration as Static IP.
5. IP Address : 192.168.1.2
6. Subnet mask fills on it's own as 255.255.255.0
7. Gateway address :192.168.1.1

May be this (not-so-exact) translation is useful, if you still want to
help with this bug.

Ubuntu7.10 Chinese language interface in the PDF support is not perfect,
because sometimes is a Chinese word (such as thick, but in the PDF reader for
the directory will be displayed similar to the shame. Similar Xu and the
Green) to use its built-in browser PDF the same word in the text and in a
small directory (to the left of the interface), the show is not the same (small
directory is wrong).

[Bug 189445] Re: gnome-power-manager fails to show logout dialog

2008-03-07 Thread Parthan
Thank you for filing the bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
Following the development over the upstream Debian bug mentioned, it
seems that the bug was fixed in upstream version 2.20.1-1. Checking the
current version in Ubuntu 8.04, the version is 2.21.0-0ubuntu1. It might
be that the upstream fix might have not been incorporated into the
version in Hardy. Also that the current bug is for Gutsy, which needs a
fix and it is available upstream. So, am confirming this bug.

2008-03-07 Thread Parthan
Checking with the current version available in Hardy, gnome-power-
manager-2.21.1-0ubuntu1, reveals that the bug has been fixed by removing
the --enable-checkfg from DEB_CONFIGURE_EXTRA_FLAGS in
debian/rules. As the bug has been fixed in the latest version of gnome-
power-manager in Hardy, this bug is marked as fix released.

[Bug 199358] Re: nautilus desktop not resizing images selected for icons

2008-03-06 Thread Parthan
Thank you for filing the bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Icons
are not just images which are shrunk in size. Icons are made to fit
specific sizes and should of one of these formats - PNG, SVG or XPM.
There are scalable icons and non-scalable icons. If the image you have
selected to be custom icon is non-scalable image, then it will appear in
its own size and can not be scaled to fit the icon size. You can refer
to the following links on how to make icons for GNOME,

* http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Creating_Icons/
* http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/1.0/icons.html

As this is not actually a bug, am closing this as invalid. Please feel
free to open if it can be confirmed otherwise.

In addition to the above Debugging Program Crash, after you have traced

Nope, all KDE apps don't work well in GNOME or vice versa. There are
hell lot of bugs regarding crashing of KDE apps when using in GNOME.

Moreover, All Debian apps can be installed on RHEL and vice versa,
after manually extracting and a few other tweaks. What's the use of
making so many distinctions? Why can't there be just 1 linux?
Linux is always one, but DE and WMs are many. This is because we
(FOSSians) believe that options are a form of freedom. 99% of people
change their desktop background frequently. People do not like to stick
with the same thing, or at least like to have some visual improvements
and changes. All do not like the way GNOME works, all do not like the
way KDE works. Thus users are always given the choices and freedom to
use what they feel comfortable using. In the past one year, I had
shifted between GNOME and KDE as my primary desktop 4 times. I like a
few KDE apps which I use in GNOME and vice versa with the GNOME apps as
well. What makes me keep going is this freedom to make my choices
whenever I feel like. And there are nicer things in the Desktop world
other than KDE, GNOME as well.

There is indeed a project which aims at integrating or at least making
the hard work of different DEs into one. Check
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/ to know more.

 Yes, I'm a Kubuntu user. :) (Kubuntu 6.06.2 LTS)
Add one more over here, though I am running Hardy Alpha KDE4 in VM ;)
And are there any k/ubuntu users who have both KDE and Gnome installed
(together). If yes, how does one go about installing both, on the same
 machine.
I have been using KDE in Ubuntu installation for more than an year.
Though there were some app related issues when I cross used, it was a
smooth sail. Still I use a lot of KDE apps in GNOME, things work fine.
A question for Kubuntu users -
when one right clicks on an open space what options do you get,
specifically do you get the option to open specific open office files
directly (unlike in gnome, and like is M$ wincedows).
Right-click on the GNOME Desktop gives me Create Document option, but
I can create only empty file as it report No templates installed. May
be some one with OO should check and revert ;)

[Bug 195679] Re: pidgin does not have Save button to save browser preferences

2008-02-26 Thread Parthan
It is indeed about pidgin. All online service related applications have
a browser settings which specified the default browser for the
application to use for opening links in the text. In still laymen terms,
when you send a link to your friend on IM and when the friend clicks on
the link, the link is opened in the browser as specified in the browser
settings. If there is no option for browser settings then the
application might use the default browser of the desktop environment
(which is set using preferred applications). If there is a browser
settings, then it is used as the preferred browser to open the links.

I will check Pidgin in Hardy and confirm (or fix released) this bug
asap.

[Bug 195679] Re: pidgin does not have Save button to save browser preferences

2008-02-26 Thread Parthan
I checked the same in my Hardy alpha installation ( I haven't done the
latest updates) which has pidgin 2.3.1 and it too doesn't show me a
Browser tab. Instead I have a configure browser option in the
Network preferences tab whose screenshot I am attaching with this
comment.

[Bug 195679] Re: pidgin does not have Save button to save browser preferences

2008-02-26 Thread Parthan
There is no Save button in any of the preferences. It is automatically
saved when you change something and close the preferences dialog window.
May be you need to quit and run your pidgin again for the changes to
take effect.

[Bug 195679] Re: pidgin does not have Save button to save browser preferences

2008-02-26 Thread Parthan
I tested the same in my Kubuntu 7.10 installation by installing pidgin
and setting Firefox as the browser in the Browser preferences. As Alok
guessed, I found the Browser tab in Preferences in Kubuntu-Pidgin. Hence
this option comes in KDE installation only. But, when I changed the
browser from Konqueror to Firefox and closed the Preferences window
(there is no save button) and then tried to open a link typed in IM chat
window, it correctly opened it in Firefox browser.

Hence, I couldn't reproduce the bug specified by the original reporter
and the said bug seems to not exist. I therefore close this bug. Let the
original reporter or others feel free to open it if it can be reproduced
in their installations.

[Bug 196010] Re: the damn thing wont play movies!

2008-02-26 Thread Parthan
Thank you filing the bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Your
description is incomplete to help us solve the bug. Can you specify
which type of media files are you trying to play? If its non-free media
formats, can you check whether you have the necessary non-free plugins
installed. If you had them installed earlier, can you verify whether
they still exists and weren't removed during the update? You can check
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats to know more about
what non-free-plugins you need to play movies in your system. Thanks in
advance.

 Hello All

Is there a Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy CD with install CD but without LiveCD
available? Yesterday I started to install that on an old Toshiba Laptop
(PIII-600 MHz, 192MB RAM) and it took so long to get out of the liveCD
mode that I gave up and installed OpenSuSE 10.3 instead and it installed
much more quickly.
Try the alternate CD of the same. You can download the alternate CD and
burn it into a CD ROM. Pop into your CD drive similar to Live CD, and
use the text mode installer especially when you are installing in a
system with lower RAM. I would suggest trying out Dapper on lower RAM
systems, as it is still LTS.
