[Bug 1347927] Re: python-pyparsing version dependency missing

2014-07-23 Thread WeatherGod
Uhm, this might actually not be an issue with the package. Between v1.2
and v1.3, we changed to using setuptools, and changed our dependency
handling. If there was a pre v1.3 install of matplotlib prior to
installing v1.3+, this can cause issues (for examples, you may have
problems with mpl_toolkits and dateutils because of how they are now
handled differently than before).

Looking at the error message, I see it references
/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.7/matplotlib/__init__.py (note the version-
less matplotlib name). This is how matplotlib used to be installed in
pre v1.2 days, making me wonder if this is really a different problem.

[Bug 1347927] Re: python-pyparsing version dependency missing

2014-07-23 Thread WeatherGod
I would suggest that the user verify that they can use mpl_toolkits such
as axes_grid1, mplot3d and basemap. If there are problems there, then
this is a deeper issue.

Btw, the specific requirement for pyparsing is
['pyparsing=1.5.6,!=2.0.0']. There was a very bad bug in version 2.0.0
that was subsequently fixed in a later version.

[Bug 752647] Re: import pylab in a python console flags error No module named _tkagg

2011-04-07 Thread WeatherGod
Because the default configuration uses the TKAgg backend, it might be a
good idea to include 'matplotlib/backends/_tkagg.so' file in the list of
files that must exist. I am not familiar with debian build files, but
with rpm build packages, one can specify files that should exist after
the build, and an error will be thrown if it doesn't exist. This way,
such a mistake gets caught before commiting the package to the repos.

[Bug 313834] Re: subsequent figures close immediately

2011-03-07 Thread WeatherGod
Don't import matplotlib.pyplot as pylab. This will only serve to cause
confusion as the pylab interface is different from the pyplot interface.
You should only need to do the first two lines (and they should be
before any other matplotlib imports).

In addition, because Natty *should* come with matplotlib v1.0.1 (fingers
crossed), this bug should become irrelevant as the problem in TkAgg has
long since been fixed.

[Bug 607395] Re: Please merge matplotlib 1.0.1-1 (universe) from debian experimental main

2011-03-02 Thread WeatherGod
I haven't figured out your particular error, but browsing through the
build log revealed that the local copy of the sample data is incomplete:

/tmp/buildd/matplotlib-1.0.1/build/lib.linux-x86_64-2.7/matplotlib/sphinxext/plot_directive.py:322:

In addition, the log also revealed a slight logical error on the part of
upstream matplotlib, because it attempts to generate a basemap image, but
matplotlib is not dependent on basemap -- minor issue, though. There are a few
other build errors, but I believe they were fixed in subsequent revisions to
matplotlib 1.0.x branch.

Mehdi,

We acknowledge that you are having issues with your disc drive, however
this particular bug has been reported as fixed by the original reporter
of this particular bug. While your symptoms may be similar to the
author's problems, the cause of your symptom is different.

It would be most helpful to file a new bug report instead of posting to
an existing, closed report. Thank you for helping to make Ubuntu
better!

[Bug 561390] Re: LVM - /var failed to mount during boot

2010-10-07 Thread WeatherGod
I have to agree with the sentiment of Kelsey. Regardless of how bad the
original code was, it does not warrant the sort of written statement
that appeared in the changelogs. Please keep in mind the Code of
Conduct that you have signed and treat everybody with respect.

In particular, these changelog messages appear during the system updates
and a statement like take their change out back and shoot it in the
head should never appear to an end-user.

[Bug 490586] Re: qt backend aborts on show()

2010-10-06 Thread WeatherGod
This most likely has been fixed in the upstream development version.
There have been many fixes with regards to show() for the v1.0 release
(and then some additional subsequent fixes in the maintenance branch).
It does not appear that version 1.0 will be released with Maverick,
however.

[Bug 178442] Re: Pulseaudio fails to initialize ICE17xx chipsets

2010-09-28 Thread WeatherGod
Has anyone tried to see if their ICE1712-based sound cards work on the
Maverick Meerkat Beta? I don't have a digital in/out sound card, but I
have personally found that Pulseaudio has greatly improved over the last
few releases, and I was curious if this issue has been resolved for
10.10.

@stoo, I haven't looked at the patch, and without having one of these
cards, it would be hard for me to be sure if one is doing it right. If
I find time, I will give it a shot to write up a quick guide, but I
would highly recommend somebody else more knowledgeable to do so.

[Bug 554433] Re: [LUCID] cd/dvd not recognized

2010-08-16 Thread WeatherGod
Jordi,

Your issue would be best served by filing a new bug report with this
information. Also, be sure to include the make/model of your CD/DVD
drive units. I would probably file the report against the udev package.
Thank you for helping to make Ubuntu better!

[Bug 129396] Re: New windows are put in the background

2010-08-07 Thread WeatherGod
While it is similar behavior, the fix was sent out for Compiz, not
metacity. You might want to open a new report against metacity
(although, note that metacity is a gnome thing). Do feel free to
mention in the new report that the bug is similar to this report. You
might have to phrase the report as a feature request for some sort of
user-configurable setting for desired behavior.

[Bug 501207] Re: sound-juicer, rhythmbox, nautilus crash at audio CD insertion

2010-07-18 Thread WeatherGod
Greg, thanks for the enthusiasm. I have re-pinged the developers
upstream to hopefully get their attention on this issue again. We will
see what they say they need.

In the meantime, keep in mind that the Triaged status is higher than
Confirmed. So changing this report from Confirmed to Triaged
actually demotes its status. Not a big issue, but just so you know in
the future. Thank you for helping to make Ubuntu better!

[Bug 554433] Re: [LUCID] cd/dvd not recognized

2010-07-12 Thread WeatherGod
IsidoreSparkle,

a) See comment #16, as the original reporter stated that his problem was
fixed. This was later confirmed by a few other uses and re-affirmed by
the original reporter. If you are still having a problem, then you have
a different bug with a similar symptom. Comments #24 through 26 show
other users who have filed new bugs. Maybe one of those apply to you
and you should add to those reports? Or, file a new bug.

b) At the risk of being condescending, 3 or 4 people is not widespread.
While I am aware of the fact that many might not be reporting this bug,
I have seen other bug reports that were much more widespread.

However, this does not diminish the fact that *you* are having a
problem, and it should be solved, regardless of it being widespread or
not. I do hope that we can solve your issue, and that would be best
done in a new report or in another report that more closely matches your
problem.

c) That would only be true if this was an open ticket. However,
because it is marked as Fix Committed, the developers and QA people do
not see these reports anymore (unless they search for it specifically).
Hence why you should move to a ticket with a matching problem, or open a
new bug report.

d) I don't follow your logic here. Adobe has refused to maintain their
product on Linux, even when broken. The Linux community has bent over
backwards to try and support outdated Flash software, but there is only
so much they can do. Adobe -- on all platforms -- has been slow to
produce bugfixes and to maintain their software.

Other things like monitors, keyboards, routers and such, so long as
their drivers are open source, will likely continue to work for a very
long time because we can do something about it. With closed-sourced
drivers and software, there is very little that can be done. This is a
cold, harsh reality that the Linux community has been trying to make
people aware of for a long time.

To summarize, this bug report is *Closed*. Please file a new report or
join an open one that matches your problem more exactly.

[Bug 554433] Re: [LUCID] cd/dvd not recognized

2010-07-09 Thread WeatherGod
This is a bug report system and not a forum. While these discussions
are *healthy* for driving improvements to Linux and ironing out rough
edges, they do not belong here. Also, because this bug has been marked
as Fix Released the developers are no longer looking at this report
and will not see your messages.

Because the fix did work for some people, I suspect the problem you are
experiencing is slightly different and a new bug report should be filed.
This will increase the likelihood of your specific issue being
addressed. Feel free to mention in the new bug report that your issue
may be similar to this bug report.

Also, keep in mind that for many people, CDs and DVDs are working just
fine, and that this problem is not widespread. We need *your* reports
to make Linux better.

As a side-note, the issue with Flash is that because it is closed-
source, only Adobe can release fixes for it. Because Linux is such a
small marketshare, they do not care enough to fix their products for
Linux. This is also true for nVidia right now.

[Bug 511774] Re: My user session closes randomly [Karmic]

2010-07-01 Thread WeatherGod
clh, I don't know if it is a known bug in the sense that we know
exactly the cause of the session shutting down. It certainly does
appear to be an intrusion attempt (but I am hardly an expert). However,
the session should not shut down due to such attempts. This kind of
behavior is a form of Denial of Service. While the hacker probably
could not access information or take control, they were still able to
trigger undesired behavior.

Therefore, we thank you for bringing this to our attention, as,
ultimately, this will lead to an eventual bugfix. Thank you for helping
to make Ubuntu better!

[Bug 496681] Re: Rhythmbox does not save playlist on iPod

2010-06-30 Thread WeatherGod
hmm, maybe rhythmbox is not triggering an fsync() call before telling
the user that it is ok to remove the device? Or, maybe it is
prematurely telling the user that it is ok to disconnect? Could
somebody try doing it the wrong way (i.e. - eject through rhythmbox),
but wait about 5 minutes before disconnecting? Maybe also see if the
device is still listed on the desktop even after ejecting it from

[Bug 580881] Re: package tex-common 2.06 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-06-10 Thread WeatherGod
This is definitely a dependency issue. tex-common needs texlive-base
because the tex-common --configure process seems to search for the
texlive-base package. In addition, I got to this point because I
needed to install dvipng, which seems to depend on texlive-base-bin.
texlive-base-bin is replaced by texlive-binaries. texlive-binaries
depends upon tex-common.

Maybe texlive-binaries should also depend on texlive-base?

+ *** Problem *
+ Toshiba Satellite P100 PSP-A3C laptop, Nvidia GeForce Go 7600, running Karmic
2.6.31-15, Nvidia proprietary driver 185.

GNOME-Sensors applet reports CPU stable at about 60 C, GPU climbs slowly
up to about 90 C, then the system shuts down.

On 9.04, I had the same problem, but I was able to load a custom DSDT,
after which the fan ran properly, and the system stayed cool, GPU around
65 C. Also stays cool under Windows XP.

I understand that it is not possible to load a custom DSDT under karmic,
  so I need another solution.
+
+ Possible Fix **
+ After some more hacking in DSDT, Yann found that fan control is located in
ACPI EC (embedded controller) address space : VTMP acpi byte in acpi EC bit
field, at offest 0x5E.
+
+ Yann found some similar concerns on some acer laptops (having the same

Alejandro,

Depending on how many versions of the package that your computer has,
you can use the Synaptic Package Manager to force your computer to use
a particular version. From within Synaptic, you find the name of the
package and select it. Then you press Ctrl-E to Force Version (or you
can go to Force Version under Package up in the toolbar menu).
Hopefully, you can select an older version of the package this way.

If anyone knows a better way, that would be great.

fine except for the screen turning off (Fn+F7). I am curious as to what
makes my model different from everyone else's Eee PCs? If it makes any
difference, my EeePC was the SSD Linux version. I am also using the
stock BIOS as well.

[Bug 476652] Re: sound stops and begins clicking and popping

2010-04-29 Thread WeatherGod
Arroccali, that is a very interesting observation. Frankly, I have
never heard of such a port before, but I can imagine how that might
effect things with regards to timings. Could you please upload the
dmesg output that occurs when you attach the usb dongle to the special
port? It might also be interesting to see if there are any dmesg output
while the clicking and popping are occuring.

[Bug 474978] Re: Unable to Log In Ubuntu 9.10

2010-04-16 Thread WeatherGod
Well, I am guessing that the fault lies with wubi assuming an english

questions it asks. For a normal Linux install, the first two questions
are always about the language and the keyboard.

After I sucessfully installed Ubuntu 9.10 within Windows XP via Wubi

[Bug 518007] Re: Asus Eee Function Keys (Hotkeys) are not working with Lucid 10.04

2010-04-08 Thread WeatherGod
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 505452 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/505452

I am concerned about side-effects of adding that line to the grub
configurations. In particular with battery monitoring and other
hardware-related things. This might fix our problem, but does it break
other things?

What is it that changing the acpi_osi line fixes that allows the module
to load? Would it be better to fix the module directly?

Please note that I am just asking these questions just as a sanity check
because I would hate to see Lucid plagued with hardware troubles at
release and have it traced back to this fix.

[Bug 478778] Re: After quiting firefox 3.5 I decided to start it up again and I got an error firefox is running please quit the running application before starting firefox. No sign of the application

2010-04-02 Thread WeatherGod
jeankoala, please see my comments above. This is not a bug, and quiting
the Ubuntu session should not be necessary. What is likely happening
for you is that firefox is taking a little bit of extra time to clean up
after the Java applets upon close. This would be highly dependent upon
the applets that you are viewing and the resources that they need.

If you give firefox time to shut down completely (I never had to wait
more than 30 seconds, although usually it is about 5 seconds), then you
should be able to start up a new FF session without issues. Or, you
could open a new window before closing out the old window to avoid the
problem altogether.

Thank you for using Ubuntu and helping to make it better! I hope you
find this information useful.

[Bug 501207] Re: sound-juicer, rhythmbox, nautilus crash at audio CD insertion

2010-03-31 Thread WeatherGod
pixel_juice, you could use the Startup Disk Creator to create a usable
LiveCD version of Lucid on a USB stick. In addition to at least 700MB
for the image, you can allocate additional space that can be used by the
LiveCD to write data to. In this way, you can boot Lucid from a USB
stick and Try Ubuntu without installing and yet you can still
install packages and drivers that will be there for the next boot.

Roger, agreed. Besides, this is probably most likely a graphics driver
issue with regards to some of the work that is being done in the Linux
kernel (the modesetting and such). It is quite likely that it will take
the newer kernels to really address this issue anyway.

Plus, it still leaves open the possibility for backporting the fix to

[Bug 435805] Re: Icons overlap for categories with = 9 rows

2010-03-23 Thread WeatherGod
sanktnelson, the recommended way to test the Lucid beta system is to
download the iso file from http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook
/daily-live/current/. Then you can take a blank USB stick with at least
700mb of space on it and use the Startup USB Disk Creator (I might have
the name slightly wrong) under System. Or, if your computer has a cd
drive, you can just simply burn the iso onto a CD. Then, you can boot
from the CD or the USB stick and run Lucid without affecting your Ubuntu

[Bug 435805] Re: Icons overlap for categories with = 9 rows

2010-03-23 Thread WeatherGod
vexorian, thank you for your assistance in this matter. As a reminder,
it is still not recommended to *install* Lucid just to test a few
packages. Also, a virtual machine, while very useful, can sometimes
cause slightly different behaviors than your actual machine because some
virtual machines translate the hardware into generic interfaces, causing
the virtual environment to use different drivers than it would have used
on the machine itself. Therefore, in order for the virtual machine
tests to be useful, the problem first has to be reproduced using Jaunty
or Karmic in the VM, and then tested using Lucid in the VM.

As an alternative, you can boot into a LiveCD session of Lucid without
ever touching your current install (it is very much like how Knoppix
works, if you have ever used that).

[Bug 461163] Re: Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes.

2010-03-11 Thread WeatherGod
TM Hart,

I quite agree. I am sure that this bug turned away many new linux users
who had certain models of Intel video cards. Unfortunately, there is
not much that can be done with respect to the downloadable ISO (which is
why it is so important to test the ISOs extensively before the final
release).

In the meantime, if you could contribute information at this page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Lucidi945Freezes that would be greatly
appreciated.

[Bug 501207] Re: sound-juicer, rhythmbox, nautilus crash at audio CD insertion

2010-03-04 Thread WeatherGod
stlubuntu,

The developers for the braesero thinks they have found the cause of your
bug. They wish to know if this is happening for all music CDs that you
have or not. Particularly, they suspect that the problem is related to
CDs that have what is known as CD-TEXT. Maybe older music CD does not
trigger the crash?

Sorry for the delay in responding. Your explanation for the cause of
the problem makes a lot of sense. I will be creating a test case file
to examine this to confirm if that this is the case.

Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes, your description is clearer,

I do not believe that this is a duplicate of bug 435805 because the
behavior seems different. It is possible that they are related, but
until we can truely identify the problem in either report, I can't say
that this is a duplicate.

After some on-site work, we have determined that sound is indeed
working, however it is *extremely* faint. We will now follow the
directions at

to see if this helps to make the audio loud enough.

[Bug 464020] Re: Ubuntu software center says waiting for other software managers to quit when none are open

2010-02-16 Thread WeatherGod
Thanks ashbonne, this indicates to me that 'update-grub' is not the
cause of the problem for you (but may still be the issue for others). I
will look into other possibilities.

As a side note, the '|' symbol (which is typically found on English
keyboards on the same key as the '\' symbol) is referred to as the
'pipe' in Linux-speak. If you care to know, its job at the command line
is to take the output of the command before it and 'pipe' it as input
into the command after it. Therefore, in this case, 'ps ax' outputs a
list of all running processes, and 'grep update-grub' searches the input
for any instances of the text 'update-grub'.

Do *not* follow the advice in reply 27. It does not fully solve the

not the same cause that is addressed here. Therefore, it would be best

[Bug 435805] Re: Icons overlap for categories with = 9 rows

2010-02-10 Thread WeatherGod
I am very doubtful that this is a graphics driver issue. This seems to
be more related to changes to the UNR code to calculate icon spacing and
window sizes. That is why this issue is difficult to find because it
requires very specific set of circumstances to reproduce. Simply
changing the number of icons in the menu can sometimes fix this.

So far, on my EeePC 1000, I have yet to encounter this issue, although I
did notice some minor spacing mistakes for early versions of Karmic. I
have had no issues with the alpha versions of Lucid.

[Bug 493290] Re: CD icon disappears in File browser

This might be similar to bug 478962. While triaging it, we have noticed
that gvfs drops the cd drive after insertion of a CD. Further tests are
difficult in that report due to limited technical abilities of the
