Dear Bhavani,Its been a long time since i read the ubuntu-in mail and when today i read this heated conversations about you and others i have to share that two thoughts came into my mind. One is a funny one and the other is a serious one:1.(the funny one): Holy Cow! Bhavani is still at it?2.(the serious one): Why can't he(bhavani) just work? That is if he 'actually' wants to. Why so much talk and discussion? Too many words are just a waste of precious time and energy. Re: [ubuntu-in] Gutsy 64 bit troubles.
In my further attempt to fix Graphics corruption plus freezeups (both may be unrelated problems for all i know) on my Gutsy installation i just visited the #linux channel at irc and the guys over there helped me out for over an hour(i am indebted to them for this) and i learnt a lot today. I modified the xorg.conf file changing SiS entry in DeviceDriver to svga and then to vesa. And it did not work. it did not find the svga module while vesa did run but there were four columns with unreadable resolution on the Gnome login screen. I was wondering how can it be possible that there is no generic driver for my integrated graphics card? there has to be some solution, no? Any input appreciated. My machine: AMD Athlon 64, ASUS K8S-MX motherboard with SiS 760GX / 965L Chipset. Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter. However, the kernel only 'detects' 150 MB main memory.(according to 'free'). My system naturally runs real sluggish due to this. Where did the ~70 MB go? I ran memtest86, it showed no problems. This _is_ a kernel problem, right? Anyone having a similar experience? Let me tell u in the beginning i am so troubled that i am seriously considering Open SUSE. I recently talked with a SUSE user asking him is it debian based(like ubuntu) and u he replied, 'Its not debian based, its awesome based!'. I have amd athlon 64 machine with asuz K8S-MX motherboard(integrated Sis graphics card is causing most of graphics problem i have read), 512 MB ram, LG 700E 17' monitor, SATA Samsung 80 GB HDD. I installed gutsy from : 1. AMD64 Desktop CD(live cd) 2. AMD64 alternate CD 3. i386 alternate CD In all 3 cases the installation goes fine. But when i start using gutsy all three times i have these problems: 1. Corrupted graphics.(discoloured patches in desktop menu, criss cross lines on desktop) 2. More importantly: total freezeups. sometimes its when a new webpage is opened, sometimes when a program is run. I think its at times when hard disk comes under some sort of load(cos it starts humming louder). This problem is so bad and sometimes i have to boot up a couple of times before i am able to do anything. 3. on boot up many a times gutsy says it fails to read some configuration file and hence the display is not proper. 4. Often bug buddy comes up immediately when i boot up and i cont figure it out whats brought it up. What do i do: -in cases of complete freeze up or random error messages when i just booted in, all i do is cut off power and reboot. -in case of corrupted graphics i Log Out and log back in.That helps. if i have some program running i Switch user and come back in again. That helps too. - Meet people who discuss and share your passions. Re: [ubuntu-in] ubuntu India website redesign
Friends, A few words on showing a learning path to a new ubuntu developer. First: For a person outside the computer field, sheer volume of things to be learned is overwhelming and one feels lost. It would be very helpful if one is told in the very beginning that to achieve xyz you would need to know at least abc and def things well and that here are a few helpful tutes on these topics. Second(this is aimed at creating a strong developer community): Leaving out some good engineering colleges, there are tens of engineering colleges all across punjab (i assume the situation is no different in other states) in which there are no good teachers and students learn almost on their own. Linux is badly taught and badly represented. For these students(mind you they are in lakhs) if we were to provide a one stop budding developer section it would not only be according to the ubuntu philosophy but would also help widen ubuntu community and help the operating system evolve. regards nanbudh - Forgot the famous last words? One thing that worries me is that when i upgrade my ubuntu version i shall have to download all of them again. i have read somewhere there is a utility which creates a CD of all the inntalled pkgs. BTW what is the ideal directory to install a program to when i am doing it myself.i am currenlty doing it to /opt. is it ok? regards nanbudh - Forgot the famous last words? I can send it to whoever is interested to check out and see if it can be made into something better. Btw, you know of any commercial softwiare which will do this job. Would like to have a look at the process and understand what exactly is being done. actually its been quite a while since i either made a booklet or used commercial dtp software :) and i don't remember what software (adobe pagemaker i think it was) am not sure but maybe even m$ office has a booklet feature (anyone??) regards ram regards VK thanks ram -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in -- The hidden harmony is better than the obvious!! -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in - Now you can chat without downloading messenger. Someone from the Council will need to make a forum.ubuntu-in.org URL. Until that time, the forums can be accessed at my URL, http://ubuntu.techjugaad.com 2. We need to modify the wiki to accommodate the details of the forum also. 3. I will need friends volunteers who can help with the moderation and maintenance. There's a specific forum on the board where you can apply for that. 4. Vivek Khurana has kindly agreed to make a Ubuntu-like design for the board. That shall be on as soon as done. [ubuntu-in] Dual Core and Core 2 duo?
Friends, Is there any significant difference, from user's point of view, in laptops having Intel dual core and Core 2 duo? I wish to use my laptop for internet reading, office apps, programming with python, django etc. Although i know that core 2 duo is made from ground up for better performance but is it really great or is it just a hype? The Core 2 duo models are pretty expensive,i think 10,000 more than dual core processor. I am getting an HP laptop dual core for around 32000/- (orginal around 43000/- or something). Should i go for it? Some guys are quite happy with celeron laptop models too. (i am reminded of the fact that everything used to get done even on pentium III, albeit a few seconds slower ). Re: [ubuntu-in] Donot know how to start zope
Thanks so much for the link Gaurish. But i am still lost. For all i understand the installation thru synaptic did create an instance directory(which is needed before zope can be run), which is /usr/lib/zope2.9/skel. There is a readme file in skel which tells us so. Now if i am correct there should be a file named start here in bin directory but /usr/lib/zope2.9/skel/bin contains this: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/lib/zope2.9/skel/bin$ ls runzope.bat.in runzope.in zopectl.in zopeservice.py.in Now i tried running all of these but to no avail. Can you guide me further please? thanks in advance regards nanbudh Gaurish Sharma [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: maybe this will help On 9/9/07, nan budh [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Friends, A few hours earlier I installed zope2.9 through synaptic. all went fine except that i cannot find anything on how to start the damn thing. i tried googling and after 2 hours of futile search i ask for help. There is lot of stuff on manual install and making an instance and then running some 'start script but nothing on how to start after a synaptic install. BTW i searched and searched but i could not find a start script file anywhere on my filesystem. This is where ubuntu starts becoming frustrating, when after installing something you cannot see its icon anywhere in menus and do not know what to do next. any help appreciated. regards nanbudh - Get the freedom to save as many mails as you wish.
