Re: [ubuntu-in] hello! new to list-- 3 questions

2009-03-19 Thread Moz

Hi Onkar

I initially thought you read the instructions on some public forum,
hence such reaction. I didn't mean to *slap* anyone and I apologize if
the tone of my reply that way.

Apology accepted, I do not get offended easily. People have different
perspectives all the time.

Few more points.
1. All the command in /etc/rc.local are run as root user at the
startup. So you don't need to add sudo to any command. I can
understand that this came from your less knowledge about linux system.
I hope you will keep this tip in mind next time.

I changed the line in /etc/rc.local and it works fine.

  2. Even though a normal user is ignorant about security, there is no
reason why one should remain in that state. In my opinion security is
a necessary not luxury. Hence I told you the correct way.

Agreed and thanks...

If you want to load a module on startup, simply add it to
/etc/modules. If you want the module to be added with specific options
then create a file /etc/modprobe.d/modulename and add options to that
file.

Thanks for this Onkar, but I do not know enough to follow your advice. So I
add usbserial to /etc/modules? And create a file /etc/modprobe.d/usbserial
with the vendor and product options as above?

Yes, you understood it correctly. You can read other files in
/etc/modprobe.d to see how options are actually written

I tried this but it does not work. I had to travel so I could not check
the dmesg output and so on, but the error message I kept on getting was
that ttyUSB0 does not exist. And when I check the /dev folder, it
actually did exist. I will try to check that when I get back home.

and compare it with your configuration file. You may need to enable

That tutorial is for BSNL, and BSNL is exactly what I have. My modem says
"BSNL" on the front of it. And on the back it says LG CDMA Fixed Wireless
Terminal, model LST-260B. That is exactly what the tutorial is for.

And when I do "uvdial" in a terminal window, it DOES connect as you see in
the above terminal output. So I think the phone number is fine. Otherwise it
would not give the "CONNECT" response, as it did (see above terminal window
output) -- and it detects the carrier as well. But after it "Connects", then
it does not seem to get permission to finalize the PAP (Password
Authentication Protocol). So it seems more like a password issue. According
to the tutorial, the password should be the last four digits of the phone
number. My phone number is 06183-290080. This is the phone number that came
with the LG BSNL modem I describe above.

So given all this, what is your thought as to what I need to change to get
on-line? It seems like there is just one last thing that is needed in order
for this to work.

Maybe the phone number is different for VSNL? Since that tutorial is for BSNL

You are right! I changed it back to ACM0 (zero), and now it accepts all
three initialization strings, and then goes on to show the following:

sending: ATDT#777
CONNECT
Carrier detected. Waiting for prompt.
Don't know what to do! Starting pppd and hoping for the best.
Starting pppd at Wed Mar 18 17:27:00 2009
Warning: Could not modify /etc/ppp/pap-secrets: Permission denied
--> PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) may be flaky.
Pid of pppd: 6092
Using interface ppp0
pppd: [code]
pppd: [code]
pppd: [code]
pppd: [code]
Disconnecting at Wed Mar 18 17:19:54 2009
The PPP daemon has died: Authentication error.
We failed to authenticate ourselves to the peer.
Maybe bad account or password? (exit code = 19)

So you see, it did not go on line. Could it be that the password is not
correct? According to the tutorial, it should be the last four digits of the
phone number, which is what I put in the conf file. But I should add here
that in Windows, the password and username are both the ENTIRE phone number
(excluding the first zero). So I tried changing the password to the entire
phone number in this way, but still I got the same error message as appears
above.

What do you think can be the problem?

I initially thought you read the instructions on some public forum,
hence such reaction. I didn't mean to *slap* anyone and I apologize if
the tone of my reply that way.

Few more points.
1. All the command in /etc/rc.local are run as root user at the
startup. So you don't need to add sudo to any command. I can
understand that this came from your less knowledge about linux system.
I hope you will keep this tip in mind next time.
2. Even though a normal user is ignorant about security, there is no
reason why one should remain in that state. In my opinion security is
a necessary not luxury. Hence I told you the correct way.

Yes, you understood it correctly. You can read other files in
/etc/modprobe.d to see how options are actually written.

I will also add the following: In windows, the initialization string for
this modem is "at+crm=1" e.g. the last half of the string given for use in
ubuntu, is not there in windows. I have been using this very modem with Win
XP for the last number of months, and it works just fine with the
initialization string "at+crm=1". So I tried removing the last half
(";at$lgpkt=3") in the wvdial.conf file, and made the initialization string
just as the windows one. But still I got the same error which appears above
when using the initialization string given in the tutorial
("at+crm=1;at$lgpkt=3").

If I can get the correct initialization string, that should solve the
problem.

Did you write it correctly in the configuration file as ACM0 (the last

I have gotten one step further. According to what I found in the terminal
window output, I changed the modem's address from "ttyACMO" to "ttySLO". I
went back to the wvdial.conf file and changed the modem's address there. Now
when I go into a terminal window and type "wvdial", it recognizes the modem
and tries to go online.

There are three initialization strings. The third one is specific to the LG
LST-260B modem. The first two initialization strings work fine. But the
third one--which is specific for the LG LST-260B and which I got from the
above "How-To", is not working. Here is what the terminal output looks like:

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Sending: at+crm=1;at$lgpkt=3
at+crm=1;at$lgpkt=3
ERROR
Bad init string.

So it looks like that final initialization string (at+crm=1;at$lgpkt=3) is
not correct. Although that is the very string given in the tutorial. ("The
initialization command for LG CDMA LST-260B is *at+crm=1;at$lgpkt=3*").

So it seems I am just at the final step. If I can provide the correct
initialization string, it should accept it and connect, go on line.

If anyone can help me in this final step, it will be great.

Thanks so much,

Many thanks for this reference. It appears to be the perfect reference for
my needs, as my unit is the very LG CDMA fixed wireless terminal, LST-260B
model for which directions are given. I followed the directions very
carefully. But once the installation is complete, it says that to go online,
in terminal one should type "wvdial". When I do that, I get the reply:

WvDial<*1>: WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.56
WvDial: Cannot open /dev/ttyACMO: No such file or directory

But when I browse to the above-list location (/dev/ttyACMO), there is indeed
a file there by that name. So I do not understand why it has not worked.

Any suggestions?

Hi Onkar,

Wow, you are surely peeved at the method I use, which must mean that it
is an incorrect way of doing it. I surely do not know why it is
incorrect as I am not an experienced user or a programmer, I am just a
simple villager living in a remote village running my computer on solar
power.

I have the following three lines in my /etc/rc.local, at the bottom of
the file:

sudo -S modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1010 <
/path/to/filewithuserpassword

Where did you learn about this *genius* way to load modules on
startup? And you are writing down your password in a file for that?

And yes, I am writing down my password in a file for that, which means
it can be compromised. But then a lot us 'end-users' are not all that
security conscious and share our machines with a lot of local people.
What if someone hacks into this machine? Well, I do take the risk.

If you want to load a module on startup, simply add it to
/etc/modules. If you want the module to be added with specific options
then create a file /etc/modprobe.d/modulename and add options to that
file.

Thanks for this Onkar, but I do not know enough to follow your advice.
So I add usbserial to /etc/modules? And create a file
/etc/modprobe.d/usbserial with the vendor and product options as above?

Thanks, I will try this and see what happens.

Hi Ram

sudo -S modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1010 <
/path/to/filewithuserpassword

is this one line and what doe the filewithuserpasswrod refer too
a txt file with the password (which normally is the phone number)

so can you post this please, would be grateful.

since /etc/rc.local runs at startup, there is no point in it asking you
the password everytime the computer boots up, so use the -S option and
put your password (the one you enter when you run a sudo command) in a
plain text file. filewithuserpassword refers to this plain text file.
You could remove the -S option and enter the password manually at every
bootup if you want.

sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0
sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1

The vendorid and productid hex numbers are found using lsusb, add 0x at
the beginning of those numbers. I guess that these ids for the ETS2280
would be different than ETS1201. The rest should work okay.

lsusb -v gives this output

Which output? Same as above? I would be surprised.

will try and will get back to you on this

Sure, I'd be interested to know if it worked.

Sincerely,

Moz

Why? Recent distros use udev and they automatically load usbserial on
detection, and create the device files for you.

I have not used the ETS2280 but I have used the ETS1201 which is also
distributed by BSNL for WLL access, and it works much better with
internet than the Airtone or Hantel. I have configured the Hantel,
Airtone and Huawei ETS1201 for internet access, all are CDMA phones. I
am guessing that configuring the ETS2280 may not be too different than
configuring ETS1201.

I have the following three lines in my /etc/rc.local, at the bottom of
the file:

sudo -S modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1010 <
/path/to/filewithuserpassword
sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0
sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1

The vendorid and productid hex numbers are found using lsusb, add 0x at
the beginning of those numbers. I guess that these ids for the ETS2280
would be different than ETS1201. The rest should work okay.

Sincerely,

Moz

Depending on which model of phone you have , if the above does not
work then have a look at
http://www.openpages.info/huawei.html

This should work for the ETS 2280 (which is what BSNL has been
spreading around )

A Note of caution - i have not been able to get the ets 2280 to work
on Ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10

For Airtone look at the following
Configuring Gutsy 7.10 to work with BSNL WLL Fixed Wireless Phone
AirTone800 1x-III to connect to the Internet over the CDMA network
http://ubuntu-in.info/wiki/index.php/BSNL_CDMA_WLL_Howto

hope this helps

No need to do all this. The package should be available in the
repository itself.
Just do
sudo apt-get install aspell-hi
or it maybe aspell6-hi

[ubuntu-in] hello! new to list-- 3 questions

2009-03-16 Thread suranjan jii
Hello there!

My name is Suranjan, and I am just new to Linux. I am a college professor in
Buxar, Bihar and am interested in spreading the news about Linux to all the
professors, staff, and students in our institution.

I myself just recently learned about Linux, and am keenly interested. I have
been searching an alternative to windows for a long time, and feel I have
finally found the answer here in Ubuntu.

I do have three questions, the first of which is critical. If someone is
able to guide me about the second two as well, it will be a very great help
to me.

1. My internet connection is WLL, which is provided by VSNL. Kindly guide me
as to how to configure my Ubuntu (version 7.10, Gutsy) so that I can get on
line. Is any special software needed? The connection is via USB port.

2. SCIM is present in Gutsy, and I would like to use it with Hindi. I have
located the setup utility in System -> Preferences, but cannot get the
actual program to open. According to the setup utility, the program should
be triggered to open upon hitting "shift-space" or "ctrl-space", but upon
doing so nothing happens. Even when a text file is open.

3. I have tried to install a linux spell-checker for use with Hindi which is
supposed to work in Ubuntu. It is called "aspell6-hi-0.02-0", and installs
in terminal using the commands "./configure", "make", and "sudo make
install". The configure command works fine, but when I give the "make"
command, I get an error "Nothing to be done for `all'", as seen below.
Please kindly guide as to how to correct this so that the "make" command
will work.

:~/Desktop/aspell6-hi-0.02-0$ ./configure
Finding Dictionary file location ... /usr/lib/aspell
Finding Data file location ... /usr/lib/aspell
:~/Desktop/aspell6-hi-0.02-0$ make
make: Nothing to be done for `all'.
:~/Desktop/aspell6-hi-0.02-0$

Many thanks,

Thank you aditya for your reply. When I was SUFFERING FROM WINDOWS, I
got this 8.04 version of UBUNTU, which was a desktop version, came on
a cd, it gets booted from the cd and I could even use the internet. I
do not know to configure LINUX or the internet, but still this version
of UBUNTU kept me aside, configured itself and even I could use the
net. Just got LFY book's UBUNTU 8.04LTS and installed it. not yet
experimented with it, but, the internet is working and hence this
mail.

I thank all the people behind this beautiful and hectic work. Really I
bow to give my respects to one and all concerned with this UBUNTU and
LINUX OS.
Thank you all once again!
FAITHFULLY,

Please enlighten me if I am mistaken. AFAIK, Ultimate Edition is not
an official flavor of Ubuntu in same way as Kubuntu, Xubuntu or
Edubuntu are. The reason I asked about not recommending it because a
new user will not know the difference.

Also this list does not prohibit mention of any distro. I just want
people to understand what kind of recommendations to give to what type
of people.

Regarding suggestion of broadband, I think that is the best way to
install new packages. If broadband is not an option then use should
use some other distros which come with bunch of CDs like Debian or
Fedora.

I was unaware that this list was strictly about official Ubuntu releases
only. I was under the impression that this
list was for all things related to Ubuntu in India. I gather mention of any
other Distro (like say, nUbuntu, Linux-Mint, etc.) other than Ubuntu,

Also, I personally feel suggesting someone to get a broadband connection is

There is no full version of Ubuntu. It is either 1 CD or DVD. CDs come
in different flavours like Desktop, Server edition.

All other packages can be installed over internet using 'Synaptic
Package Manager' in System -> Administration menu. Or you can get DVD
from someone and add it as repository and then install packages. But
even on DVD you won't get all packages.

I suggest you get a broadband connection for yourself. :-)

I think you and I, both of us - are guilty if overquoting. See above.

That's Rule # 5 in the FAQ. FYI, an FAQ is significantly different from
a set of guidelines, which is what these appear to be.

But thanks, I understand now.

[ubuntu-in] hello, new here!

2007-11-16 Thread AlgoMantra
Hi Everyone,

I just installed Gutsy, and I'm using linux for the
first time. The good news is that I have finally made
the transition from Windows (which I despise!).

I run a small research lab in Bombay called AlgoMantra,
and you can see our latest work on video here:
http://algomantra.blogspot.com/2007/11/parab0xx-light-controlled-musical.html

I hope to learn a lot from the community here, and
share my own ideas.

cheers!
