Re: [ubuntu-marketing] follow up regarding help with the magazine

2009-08-07 Thread Ronnie Tucker

If bashing some brains together could automate things it'd be awesome,
but it would have to be something quick and easy as I'm now used to
copying and pasting articles on to the wiki, getting several pages
linked to one 'contents' page (for an issue) then emailing the
proof-readers a link to the contents page.

I've had another look at Google Docs and while it looks to be great, in
my opinion it's pretty hopeless (I can just hear all the Google Doc
fans clicking reply to give me grief for saying that.) I tried giving
it various web pages (for articles that we've been given permission to
use) and it couldn't import them and I also tried giving it several
OpenOffice files (from people who've submitted articles) and it
rejected them. It does indeed, now, give a link which you can give to
anyone for editing, but it'd be nice to have one link which would let
people edit all the articles in a particular folder...

Anyway... like I say, I'm open to ideas, the less copy/paste I need to
do the better!  :D

  I've
read the above thread and lots of people have a lot of input... Which
is great... I could help with some parts of the project. Specially doing
simple tasks such as copy pasting from Scribus to HTML editor and making
sure that everything is able to navigate back and forth...I have minimal
HTML skills but these days the HTML editors are great... I'm a marketing
grad so I pretty much know nothing about coding... But I would like to
learn
and be involved... I was involved in a project within the last six
months
which is now AIESEC Monash <http://www.aiesecmonash.org/>
Not sure how much time I can commit as I'm in the midst of job
hunting...
But I am happy to help. If I am about to leave the project I
will definitely train someone while transitioning...Let me know what
you'll
think.

Perhaps Greg and Martin can show us what they are talking about as an
example somewhere. That way there is a team of editors and there is
another
team that provides ideas on innovative ways to speed processes by using
technology.

As for the Google Docs issue.. I actually use Google Docs quite a lot
to collaborate with members from AIESEC Monash... You can invite people
to
make changes to the document as collaborators, viewers and practically
anyone if they have access to a special link that the document
generates via
the share button, click on "Get the link to share".

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] ubuntu-marketing Digest, Vol 45, Issue 1

2009-08-03 Thread Ronnie Tucker

Sounds like your going to have to if you want it to take up less time.

For instance, I'm dead set against the wiki being used as a database
like this. It's not meant for collaborative writing and is the wrong
tool for the job. Even a google doc spreadsheet would be more structured
as you could export it.

I'm not sure about now, but when I last looked in to Google Docs (prior
to using a wiki) it had some limitations, file size if I remember
rightly, which meant we couldn't open a new document with the necessary
images in the document. Also using Google Docs would mean inviting
proof-readers to each document which is a bit of a pain, unless this
has changed...

Get together some scripts to generate svg xml based on your data, then
you a hop away from just re-editing it in place instead of copying and
pasting.

Your also on track to be able to feed it into html.

I have no idea about that stuff and, since we're volunteer based, if
people don't volunteer, I can't magic them (but I wish I could!)  :/

Ultimately what you want is a way for all your writers and collaborators
to contribute and for there to be a very minimal set of editing tasks
that join everything together.

Absolutely, but there doesn't seem to be a good set of tools available
at the moment. Most CMS apps are either missing something or just do
what we do now (ie: wiki).

Last thing we want is one bloke doing all the work manually and getting
the right tools together is just as much about saving your future time

True, but I can only work with what I have I'm afraid...   :/

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] ubuntu-marketing Digest, Vol 45, Issue 1

2009-08-03 Thread Ronnie Tucker

Hi Martin,

Perhaps what you need is a systematic solution, instead of a brace such
as proposed.

If the work-flow of your writing generated a set of header / text body
sections, then a script could do the work of generating html and pdf
bodies based on templates. You'd then just need some editorial time to
put in the images.

I think the best solutions are going to be ones that involve the
workflow improving, speeding up and becoming more structured, so html
can be a natural output, instead of an add on extra.

I agree with the basics of what you're saying, but unfortunately it's
not a case of copy/paste an article in to Scribus or to an HTML page. I
wish it was!  :D

Articles are pasted to a wiki where they can be proof-read and edited,
from there they'll land in the Scribus template, but sometimes more
(short) edits must be done to make the story fit the page(s) so the
Scribus/PDF article can sometimes be slightly different from the
HTML/wiki article. Some times it's no big deal, sometimes it can mean
an entire paragraph/two being lobbed off.

Effectively we have all the issues as HTML, but in a wiki and no-one
wants to take on the job of putting in the images. They'd need to be in
the right places with possibly pointers (above left, below right etc.)
and, obviously, have a nice layout.

Also I can't dedicate any more time to the project, it already takes up
several weekends each month, every month, so I can't really alter my
work-flow too much...

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] ubuntu-marketing Digest, Vol 45, Issue 1

2009-08-03 Thread Ronnie Tucker

I've tried several times to find people to maintain an HTML version of
FCM but no-one wants to take it on. It'd be quite a job, there's no
doubt about that.

The PDF should work on older machines, try making it full screen or
make sure that your PDF viewer is only displaying one page at a time
and not scrolling down through all 30+ pages and creating thumbnails.

If anyone would like to take on creating an HTML version, drop me an
email and we can discuss it, but please make sure you can do it *each
and every month*, not just one or two issues then vanish.

Thanks!

Hello,

Like many others, I have the Ubuntu countdown banner[1] on my blog
permanently.
Over the year, it's a countdown for 30 x 2 days. Add to them, let's say
14 x
2 days to usefully show "It's here". In the other 277 days, the banner
is
useless.

At the moment, it only shows "It's here"... and will still show the same
thing until the end of September..

Can't we make it more useful and let it show some dynamic content like
tips
and advertising messages ? The Marketing Team could help on this.

Hey Rafik,

"It's here", What's here? It says Ubuntu right?

Even if after a while it became a generic "Ubuntu 9.04" Button, that
would be useful.

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Hopeful News for a 2009 Advertising Campaign

2009-01-10 Thread Ronnie Tucker
I'm loathe to use RythmBox as I could never get it to work with my iPod
Classic, but Amarok worked flawlessly.

I'll maybe remove Solitaire and put in a couple of Windows games with
the name of the game and something like 'works flawlessly in Ubuntu'

Translation could be a problem, since the app is Sony Vegas, so whoever
was translating would need to install Vegas. I can certainly make an
archive of the Vegas files and images used for anyone wanting to
translate it...

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Hopeful News for a 2009 Advertising Campaign

2009-01-08 Thread Ronnie Tucker
OK, here's a 'beta2' of the WhyUbuntu comparison video I was working on.
Completely remade in Sony Vegas (thanks for the tip Jacob!) clocks in at
50 secs, and using a bit more pizazz this time. This is much closer to
my original idea...

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1743546330285506201&hl=en

It still needs some music, had a quick look on Jamendo.com - but it'd
take me forever to wade through the site, any suggestions? Any of you
good folks got some suitable music on a favourites list??

All comments welcome.

I agree. What I really wanted was to pan, and zoom, while fading between
screens, but unfortunately none of the Linux apps, or Windows Movie
Maker, allowed it :(

Bluriness was a combination of Movie Maker (making a WMV) and Google
Video. I'll try and sort something out for the next version.

Like I said in my post though... I'll put some CC music over it once I
find something suitable, haven't looked as yet.

2009-01-03 Thread Ronnie Tucker
I'm probably going to explain this badly, but how about something like:

A video that shows the Windows desktop with the My Computer window. It
morphs (or fades) to show the Ubuntu 'Computer' folder. Then shows MS
Word, it fades to OOo Writer. Same for various apps - have iTunes fade
to Amarok, Photoshop > GIMP, IE > Firefox, Illustrator > Inkscape,
Solitaire fade to... uh, Solitaire :D

That kinda thing, then at the end fade in the Ubuntu logo, name and
maybe the old quote: 'every action has an equal, and opposite,
reaction'. Doesn't really mean anything to Ubuntu, but the 'equal and
opposite' sounds good. :D

Just my tuppence worth... hell, if people like the idea, I'll make the
video! :D

[ubuntu-marketing] Looking for geek/Linux themed comics

2008-06-09 Thread Ronnie Tucker
I was thinking about putting a page of comics in to Full Circle and was
wondering if you folks know of any good geek/Linux themed comics?

Thinking of putting three, maybe four, different comics on one page.

Comics need to be Creative Commons licensed, and obviously I'll link
from the PDF to the artists site.

Unless someone out there has good ideas for a comic. I can draw but my
comedy writing skills aren't that great.

Thanks!

  Hi
all,

It's coming up to the one year anniversary of Full Circle Magazine and
I'd like to hold a survey among the readers to see what they

My first question is: what would be better: a PDF (that is
fillable/tickable (did I just create a new word? :) ) and can be emailed
to me) or: an online survey on our website that the readers could be
directed to from the magazine. I was thinking of the PDF way but
although Scribus can create PDF forms, ironically the resulting PDF
requires Adobe Reader to display the form properly so that's no good.
Any other apps that can create nice fillable/tickable PDF forms?

Second question: as well as putting in questions related to the magazine
(article likes/dislikes etc.) what would you folks like asked in a
survey?

All input welcome!

Thanks!

Now I will answer your questions.

1. I would do a webform, as it will give you faster results
2. Ask about each specific column (a lot of magazine surveys have this)

Hi Corey,

There's no survey created as yet, I just wanted to see what people
would rather fill in, a PDF one or a web survey. It's looking more like
a web survey since the PDF one would be slightly more difficult to
create and have working for everyone.

But yeah, we'll be asking what people like/dislike or would add/change
in the magazine. The reason I bring it up here is to see if there's
anything you folks would like to put in it (even if it's not magazine
related) to help you get a feel for Ubuntu or Linux stuff?

Thanks for the advice!  :)

[ubuntu-marketing] Compiz used by a Prof in NY University?

2007-12-19 Thread Ronnie Tucker
Not sure if anyone else out there is watching Monster Quest (it's on the
History Channel, good prog if you like cryptozology stuff) but I spotted
that a Professor at New York University seemed to be using Compiz
Fusion, so I can only assume they use Linux (of some flavour) ??

Some screens:
The Professor -

An app he has running -

Here comes another app -

Nearly done - http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/3893/vlcsnap2251182sx3.png
Done - http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/5701/vlcsnap2251272vy6.png

The app is something to do with genetics.

Looks like Compiz Fusion trickery to me... :)

[ubuntu-marketing] Full Circle Podcast

2007-11-05 Thread Ronnie Tucker
Hi folks,

You folks have been a great help to Full Circle Magazine, we certainly
wouldn't get getting in excess of 20,000 downloads per month without
your help.

As some of you may know we're going to launch a podcast presented by
Penguin Central's Matthew Rossi. We're hoping to have a pilot episode
out for mid-December with episode #1 coming in the first week of January
2008. It will be produced every first and third week of each month.

Would you folks be willing to support the podcast like you do with the
magazine?

Just like I do with the magazine I'm more than willing to run the
podcast by yourselves before we release each episode.

Obviously your input on this is more than welcome.

All the best and thanks from all the team at Full Circle!

[ubuntu-marketing] Gutsy - complete feature list?

2007-09-08 Thread Ronnie Tucker

Hi all!

I'd like to put a feature in full circle #5 (for release at the end of
September) listing the new features for Gutsy *buntu with screens, is
there a page somewhere that gives a *definite* list of features? With
screens? Doesn't have to be a copy/paste job, as long as I get a list of
features and some screens then I can write something up.

Thanks!

[ubuntu-marketing] interviews...

2007-06-09 Thread Ronnie Tucker
Hi all,

Just while i'm planning fullcircle #2 - I remembered that a few weeks ago we
discussed that you guys would be doing the interviews and someone would let
us know who was being interviewed and where we should send our list of
questions to. Any further info on that?

We're ok for now, we have an interview lined up for later this month but we'd
like to print in #2 who will be interviewed for #3.

Thanks for all the help in releasing #1 guys, over 15,000 downloads in 24hrs!
AND we managed to survive Digg (1,200+ Diggs). At last count we're heading
for 24,000 downloads.

We also have a redesign in the works with a prototype at:

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] fullcircle #1 - ready for Marketing perusal...

2007-06-06 Thread Ronnie Tucker
Hi all,

It's been a couple of days since my initial email and other than one objection
to Automatix2 (which has now been replaced by 'get Java from the repos') i've
heard nothing else.

I've since edited the last page of the issue to show contact details/links and
info regarding meeting times and deadlines.

If there are no further objections then issue #1 will be released late
Thursday / early Friday.

Speak now or forever hold your peace! :D

[ubuntu-marketing] full circle magazine: meeting #1!

2007-05-23 Thread Ronnie Tucker
Hey all, quick update:

Issue #1 is almost complete. Just waiting on the verdict from Audrey who is
proof-reading it. So we thought (since we have nothing else to do this
weekend) we'd have a little meeting just to talk about how things are going
and the future. Anyone is welcome, any problems just /msg mrmonday on IRC and
he'll see you right...

Contributors meeting #1 will be held on Saturday 26th May at 5:00PM GMT -
6:00PM BST (UK) - 10.00CDT (I think). If you can't make the meeting, don't
worry, as we will have FCMBot (the full circle magazine IRC bot) log the
whole meeting. If you have something you want to input on a topic, let us
know ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), and one of us will point it out in
the meeting!

Agenda

Issue #1
Translations
Issue #2
Monthly Columns
Possible Sponsor for a Printed Magazine?
Website
Team - editorial and contributor

IRC

IRC Cloaks
Web based interface
FCMBot
OP/Voice

Instructions

To get to the meeting, you need to have registered on IRC -
http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#nicksetup - and have identified to NickServ
(/msg nickserv identify [password]). Then send a message to mrmonday asking
for an invite (/msg mrmonday Invite me please!) or (if you can, don't do
this!) join #fullcirclmagazine, and point out your a contributor. You will
then be invited to the meeting channel. We will use a random channel that is
unregistered for every meeting, as suggested by an OP.

[ubuntu-marketing] fullcircle - issue #1 [update]

2007-05-05 Thread Ronnie Tucker
Hey all, just thought i'd update you on the progress of fullcircle - issue #1.

So far, about 70% of the issue is complete. I am still waiting on one install
article (in progress) and two interviews to be done. Still collecting
questions for GRAMPS and Deluge programmers, so if anyone has a question for
them please email it to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A preview is available to the marketing mailing list via :
http://www.ronnietucker.co.uk/issue1 contributors preview.pdf

(contibutors have access to the preview through our fullcircle forum)

The password for the preview pdf is ; fullcircle.

PLEASE do not release this PDF, I don't want our first issue spoiled by
someone releasing a half done, half issue, preview! :D

I estimate release time to be the last week of May.

All comments welcome :)

[ubuntu-marketing] full circle - issue #0 - ready for release...

2007-04-17 Thread Ronnie Tucker
Hi all,

As far as i'm concerned, unless anyone has any niggles with the current edit
of full circle #0, its ready to rock :

http://files.fullcirclemagazine.org/uploads/issue0.pdf

This final beta has been proofread by both Aysiu of UbuntuForums and Samyel
from the Marketing IRC Channel and their recommendations implemented.

So any mistakes are theirs... just kidding ;)

I will start work on issue #1 from the end of April (after installing Feisty)
and expect #1 ready for release at the end of May.

Do you guys want this issue #0 final to be uploaded to somewhere for release
or shall I just leave you guys to it now? Do you need anything else from me?

[ubuntu-marketing] full circle #0 - FINAL BETA [UPDATE]

2007-04-12 Thread Ronnie Tucker
Hi folks,

Aysiu from UbuntuForums has read through the FINAL BETA and PM'd me a list of
grammatical errors which are now fixed. Samyel (from the Marketing IRC
channel) is going to have a read through it also to see if he can find any
further changes...

http://files.fullcirclemagazine.org/uploads/issue0_53.pdf

In my opinion the issue #0 will be ready to ship, easily, by Sunday.

Ok, remind me never to ask Phil again if he can see any mistakes! I'm just

The licensing is fine, the magazine is also CC-SA (v3)

All the items below are now corrected.

Anyone spot any other mistakes before I compile the final PDF ?

[ubuntu-marketing] Feisty Fawn - New Features List x 4 ?

2007-04-08 Thread Ronnie Tucker
Hi all,

I'm on the scrounge for some info to put into the last remaining fullcircle
article...

Mainly, i'm looking for new features lists for Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu and
Xubuntu. I'm also looking for recent screens of the desktops and some of the
new features in action or the settings for the new features... ?

Corey pointed me to the wiki article for Ubuntu. Any other info you guys can
spare on the other three would be much appreciated.

Hopefully one more beta of fullcircle then it'll be ready for you guys to work
your magic on... :)

Ok, so I said beta4 would be the last before release, it won't be.

Still no Feisty Features article yet but ;

added:
Article from Joao on Burning ISO files in Infrarecorder in Windows.
End page detailing how readers can contribute to the magazine.
Hotlinks! Indeed, you can now click on the blue, underlined, text to have
those links appear in your browser. Same idea for email links.

still to do:
Feisty Fawn Features article.
Release the thing! :D

VERY nearly there! :)

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] fullcircle #0 - beta3

2007-04-07 Thread Ronnie Tucker
I've received very little feedback on beta2 and so far no feedback on beta3.

Now this may be a good thing on my part (i should be so lucky!), but i'm just
concerned that people are not supplying feedback now, and when I release the
final beta (when Feitsy article goes in) i'll end up with a ton of 'could you
change' emails which by that time it will be too late to make changes...

So in short; if you have ANY quibbles with full circle, please say so now! :D

PLEASE DO NOT LINK TO THIS FILE AS IT IS ON MY OWN WEB SERVER!
FEEL FREE TO MIRROR IT ELSEWHERE THOUGH...

b3 updates:
added the Creative Commons ShareAlike3 License to the index page
added some 'thanks to' on p.1.
added Edgy page (p.8)

still to do:
add Feisty article
add 'How to Burn an ISO file in Windows' article
add page detailing how readers can help (wiki, fullcircle forum, etc)

So to continue on i'll need the text and images for the Feisty Fawn Preview
