[ubuntu-studio-users] Support for Digigram PCX822np on Ubuntu Studio 20.04 LTS

2020-11-10 Thread Andrew
Hi, I have a digigram pcx822np card I am trying to use with Ubuntu
Studio on 20.04 lts

According to digigram, this card is supported by alsa in the kernel, so
I would expect lsmod to show something related to this.

I think the card is working ok as I can see that lspci shows:-
04:00.0 Multimedia audio controller: PLX Technology, Inc. PCI9080
32-bit; 33MHz PCI <-> IOBus Bridge
as well as the onboard Intel NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio
Controller.

But I'm not seeing it in the sound cards part of proc, which I would
expect if there insn't a module loaded or kernel support:-

# cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xd060 irq 35

So I believe the required module is not loaded or the kernel doesn't
support it. Google doesn't throw up much help regarding a suitable
module or links to source code. Github lists Digigram-audio as a repo,
but the README doesn't mention my card. However, the source code does
refer to pcxhr cards, which may support mine.

I'm patched up to date.

What would the advice be to proceed with this please?

Regards,
Andrew

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Driver for Audio Science asi4215

2018-02-26 Thread Andrew
Hi Ralf,
Thanks for the reply.
I haven't had chance to try this out myself yet. Would you know if the module
is the v3 or v4 code?
Unfortunately, the card I have is only supported by the v3 driver code, I have
been able to compile a v4 ok, but the card is not detected.

Audio Science wrote to me:-
Support for ASI4215 was dropped from the drivers on JUN-02-2008 (v3.10.00) a
few years after AudioScience stopped selling the card. We stop supporting
discontinued cards after about 5 or 6 years because we do not have the means
to continue building and testing firmware/drivers for such old cards.

Even if the latest driver compiled correctly it may not work with the old
version of the firmware and we cannot update/build firmware for ASI4215 anymore.
(Although if I offered $1m I suspect "cannot" would become "delighted to" )

Regards,
Andrew.

[ubuntu-studio-users] Driver for Audio Science asi4215

2018-02-23 Thread Andrew
Hi, not sure if this the best place for this post...

I have an asi4215 audio card which supports balanced analogue audio and
AES/EBU digital inputs and outputs.

There seem to be few affordable cards which support this so even though this is
an old card, it's configuration is very useful
(https://lukg.imgeng.in/https://www.prostudioconnection.net/Store/1311/52d5aa76_md.jpeg)

Unfortunately, even though there is a driver available from Audio Science
(3.08.06), it is not included in the distro, and I have had problems compiling
it due to the kernel lacking "firmware_class" support which prevents the
driver from loading the the required firmware at compile time.
(see
http://rivendell.tryphon.org/wiki/Compiling_Audio_Science_Drivers_for_older_ASI4215,_ASI4300_series_that_are_not_supported_in_the_newest_versions

for instructions, but this kernel seems to have the firmware_class enabled
presumably)

As the Ubuntu Studio kernel has low latency parameters applied, I am unsure
how to recompile this to support the firmware_class option.

Would it be possible to consider adding this support and the driver to future
releases?

Regards,
Andrew.

[ubuntu-studio-users] compiling an ASI4215 Audio Science card driver on UStudio based on 14.04.5 LTS

2016-10-06 Thread Andrew Stringer
Hi, I have an Audio Science soundcard (ASI4215) which seems to be
unsupported on the current release of Ubuntu Studio.

I have downloaded the latest driver from ASI's website which supports my
card (hpklinux-3.08.06) and tried the
usual ./configure, make, make install. However after satisfying
dependencies I am getting the following error as part of the configure
stage. From what I can read, I need to have a specific option enabled
(firmware_class) in the kernel. I believe I will need to recompile the kernel to enable
this option.

I think I have downloaded the source, headers etc. so I should be able to
do make menuconfig and then see all the options.

Given that the UStudio kernel is compiled for low latency, I'm a bit
reluctant to recompile unless it is really necessary.

Has anyone else had any experience with this card? Is this the rigth
approach and if so, what options should I ensure remain enabled for low
latency?

Regards,
Andrew.

Beware of "sudo", it gives you godlike powers...

the best advice I can give: If you have the resources, set up two
computers, one of them being your stable production/work/school machine,
the other being your experimental setup. Try the new commands on the
experimental machine, in case they don't work out like you hope. Once
you're comfortable with them, use them on the production machine.

Good luck!

I do have 2.5 linux setups (don't have full-time access to the third,

The rub is they are not identical hardware and do not behave the same

So I am now running Ubuntu 12.10 on one, Ubuntu Studio 12.10 on my
main machine, and a hodge-podge mostly 12.04 on a mini laptop which is

Am I correct that SUDO gives temporary super-user status (but not root)?
I had what had to have been one of the rare few personally-owned Unix
machines back in the early '80s, and am trying to dredge up and/or
replace the old knowledge, after being mainly in the windows world
from around 1984 until late last year..

Bizarre, I admit.

It isn't, you should asked what ever you want, sure, you also should

newbie, you better asked a question to much, than a question to less.

Because if nobody asks, then all of us that sit around in front of the

No, seriously, it's better to ask, no matter what the question is,

Back when I ran Unity beside XFCE, everything seemed to be fully
compatible, probably because of the gnome ancestry. havn't tried in

has changed...

I don't use Unity, so I don't have knowledge about it. Usually, if a
window is focused, the shortcut should work for that Window. This
doesn't work for every shortcut, but every desktop environment, resp.
windows manager should provide the option to change shortcuts by the
user.

I suspect that if you install Unity, everything will become as it was,
but there might be a menu to change or disable shortcuts.

OTOH in a hurry I couldn't find how to disable the mouse wheel button
for Xfce4, they can hide options very good, if they want ;).

As somebody else already mentioned, you can install Unity beside
Xfce4. Theoretically this should work for all DEs, but sometimes it
does cause issues, when using on Desktop environment A the browser
from environment B the session could become a mix of both desktop
environments, or desktop environment X has got 2 trash cans on the
Desktop, one that is used and another, from environment Z.

Sure, I did it for a while, then realized that XFCE is way better ;)

sudo apt-get install unity

If it doesn't work out like you hope, to get rid of unity:

sudo apt-get purge unity
sudo apt-get autoremove

Good luck!

I changed from Ubuntu 12.10 to Ubuntu Studio 12.10 primarily because
GIMP was slightly flakey (main problem was it wouldn't accept ctr key
combination like ctr+ left click to select area for clone brush) and I
hoped Studio would not have something hijacking the ctrl function. I
also do lots of content creation (primarily writing and art
photography) so Studio seemed a good choice.

Now I find myself missing the much-maligned Unity desktop. So, can I
change to Unity desktop in Studio without horrible consequences? (And
if so, how do I do it?)

Or is nobody checking to see if Unity works with all the rest of
Studio, and so I should just shut up and sit down?

Thanks.

It is easy to have new programs show up in the menu in Xfce.

1. Install the new program (either from within your enabled
repositories or directly from the program's web site [e.g. Ubuntu
Tweak, Dropbox, etc.])

2. Determine where the "execute" command is located; often this is in
a "hidden" file in your home folder

3. Open the Settings Manager, click on Main Menu, and navigate to the
folder in which you want the program to appear (Accessories,
Development, etc.)

4. Click on New Item. The Create Launcher dialog box will appear.

5. Enter the program's name; often this will be sufficient and all the
other necessary information will be automatically added

6. If this information is not added, you will have to manually add it
yourself

7. Once all information is added and you have clicked on Create,
scroll down the list in the folder and look for the program

8. Make certain that a) the program is checked and b) the name appears
in regular font (not italicized). After checking the program, you may
have to wait a few seconds for the program's name to appear in regular
font

9. At that point, when everything is done, close out the Settings
Manager and go to your Applications menu and the subfolder in which
you placed the new program. Find the program and click on it to make
sure you have entered all information correctly and that the program
starts normally. (If it doesn't, you'll have to go back and start all
over again)

10. If you wish, you can create a Launcher in your bottom panel for
the program

I hope that this information is of some use to you.

Often an icon isn't used by the Xfce menu or entries can't be sorted in
the order I want them to show up etc. pp., i really need to know where
the config files are. I already know how to configer the Xfce menu this
way.

"Main menu" is the app named "Alacarte". The funny thing is, that
Alacart does show the correct icons and the wanted order of the apps,
but what you see for Alacarte, aka main menu, isn't what you get for the
menu, at least not all the times.

ALACARTE rarely works for me. According to it, I have a normal XFCE
menu. When I open main menu, I actually see something closer to
ubuntustudio default menus...

So I don't even use it. I have mapped the [win] key on my laptop to
xfrun4 and just launch everything that way...

2013-03-15 Thread Andrew Huys
/"Ok 1. Buy Seagate drives in future. Good guarantees and built
properly. By comparison WD drives are made from sheep sh** and mud!"/

Agreed. I've got a WD 1TB drive in the 2nd HDD bay on my Lenovo T 61p
laptop, and a 120GB Seagate in the primary bay. The Seagate is silent,
spins up and down reliably, "soft parks" and is just generally a joy to
use. The WD on the other hand is loud, spins erratically, and spinning
down? DON'T LET IT! If it does, try to access > wait about 30 seconds
> WHI > "Filesystem Remounted"... If I unmount
the drive, sometimes, it will continue to run at full speed for a few
hours, for no apparent reason.

Lesson learned?
-I'll stick to Seagate.
-Or Hitachi (if you can find them). In my previous laptop, an
IBM/Lenovo T43p, I had a Hitachi Travelstar with the APS enabled (there
is/was a pacckage in the repositories) and that was a wonderful setup.
It would park the drive if the computer accelerometer detected that the
computer was moving. Saved my files a couple of times when I was doing
mobile recording and people tripped on cables...

As far as working on drives goes, GPtd can do just about everything you
need.
I would also reccamend gsmartcontrol (sudo apt-get install
gsmartcontrol), a graphical SMART data reader. Just helpful to check
and see what's going on with the drive. Also fun to check "new" HDD
with. My 1TB WD /out of the box/ came with 3 G-Sense errors...

You can test your drive by setting it as a slave drive (secondary)
drive in your machine. It's easy enough to set it as such in the bios.
Then, open 'Gparted' and run a benchmark test. It comes packaged with
studio. If it's not working, do everything, format it, erase
partitions, change the filesystem to ext4 You name it! If it's
bust what have you got to lose? Might as well learn how to use Gparted.

I've never rescued a bust drive yet. I tend to find they are
mechanically sound or they are not.

Have fun but avoid hammers... they are very bad for hard drives ;) p

Synaptic has an option to save your package state: [File]>[Save
markings as...] in the dialog, check [Save full state, not only changes]
and save the file to some external media. Boot into the other OS, open
Synaptic, [File]>[Read markings] and you should be good to go.

I'm sure that there is a way to generate a script nongraphically, but
I've never tried. Synaptic is the only way I know how.

It's of course possible that the filesystem has suffered damages for whatever

I would check previous kernels first, though, if there are any.

Sounds like a physical problem: bad HDD? A damaged sector will

Re: Just upgraded to 12.10 via update-manager...

2012-11-02 Thread Andrew Huys

Sorry, was frustrated earlier, should have been clearer.

Palimpsest had (in my opinion) a better layout, and definitely had more
options. My laptop, in addition to being my photo/audio computer,
frequently is pressed into service when I am volunteering with a
non-profit computer distribution program. My usual job is HDD guru, and
I've become accustomed to the process that palimpsest used to give. I
also liked being able to use the GUI to create odd filesystem types.

Guess I'll have to switch to GParted, although it's not as streamlined
as palimpsest was...

xfrun4 now seems to be the same thing as "application finder", I liked
it better when it was just a run dialog. The new "application
finder/xfrun4" seems to be prone to crashing. I've been sending in the
crash reports too, BTW.

I've even had nautilus crash! First time I've ever had that happen.
Was trying to open a NTFS formatted external HDD, for some reason
nautilus locked and then died. The system crash reporter caught it
though...

OK, maybe I'll give 12.04 a few more weeks before I decide whether to
keep it.

(Can you tell that I was one of those people that was ticked off when
GNOME3 came out?)

Thanks...

One of the advantages of XFCE is that it is highly customizable. It is
possible to move the Window Buttons to the bottom of the screen. Check

Re: Hi folks. which is best desquetop to use with buntu studio?

2012-09-21 Thread Andrew Huys
My personal opinion leans toward XFCE instead of GNOME3 or Unity, due to
the simple fact that it uses less system resources. On my favorite
image editing laptop (Lenovo T60p) I only have 1.83 Centrino Duo and 2GB
RAM, so less is more.

As far as ease of use, I'd vouch for XFCE, although I do use GNOME3 on
my ArchLinux IBM T43.

Xfce is much more configurable than GNOME3, a plus for me. You can make
it look like M$Windows, OSX (using AWN or Docky), Unity, GNOME2 etc.

gnome2 is end of life. i'll assume HFCE was supposed to be XFCE, and
thats what we have decided to ship with ubuntustudio... unity or
gnome3 would be fine as well, if thats what you want to use.
ubuntustudio *is* ubuntu, so you can just use whatever parts of the
ubuntustudio metapackages, or the applications that make up those
metapackages with whatever environment you choose. not sure you are
are asking about a 64bit real time kernel, or what environment would
work best with a 64bit realtime kernel.. either way, we ship
ubuntustudio with a lowlatency kernel by default. this is available in
the normal repos and can by installed in the default ubuntu
installation easily if you want. 64bit or 32, doesnt matter...

i would just whatever you are comfortable with, and keep in mind you
can fire up the ubuntustudio live DVD and see what our XFCE
implementation is like.. enjoy!

ps AVlinux ships with the LXDE environment, which is also a nice
workspace. you could install lubuntu and ubuntustudio-audio for example...

Preparing a presentation for my LUG

2011-03-14 Thread Andrew Euell
So I am preparing a presentation on the state Linux audio (and the
wider open source audio community) for my LUG and looking for people
willing to be interviewed. I would like to hear from developers from
both the kernel and user space sides, power users, hobbyists,
musicians, anyone who has dealt with Linux in some kind of audio
capacity. Anyone who wants to be interviewed please contact me off
list or send andyzweb a msg on Freenode.

For developers:
What are the difficulties of packaging and distributing realtime and
low-latency kernels?
What technical conflicts are there, if any, between Ubuntu vanilla and
Ubuntu Studio?
What are ALSA's strengths and weaknesses from the kernel perspective?
What are ALSA's strengths and weaknesses from the User land perspective?
What are your experiences with the higher level audio interfaces
(pulseaudio, JACK, portaudio, etc)?
Which parts of the Linux audio stack need particular attention from
volunteers/developers?

For users:
Did you begin as a Linux user or as an audio/music/sound person?
Is Linux at the "center" of your set-up or towards the periphery?
What hacks and tweaks have allowed you to get more out of your Linux setup?

No, these are nightly builds of the upstream source code. You still
need to install Ubuntu Studio (or plain Ubuntu), then add this on top.
There are no guarentiees that the software is not broken.

For example, you need feature X that has landed in FFmpeg but is not
included in the version of FFmpeg in Lucid. You could build FFmpeg
from source yourself, but that bypass the package system entirely.

Re: digi 003 compatible with ubuntu studio ?

2010-06-01 Thread Andrew Euell
Most Digidesign stuff is not supported by UbuntuStudio or the audio
driver backends it uses.
The audio back ends available in Linux are:
FFADO -- for all firewire devices
ALSA -- Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
OSS -- Open Sound System (not installed by default)

Digidesign is very very proprietary.
The terms and agreement for their SDKs and documentation are very
restrictive. You can check them out at this URL:
http://www.avid.com/us/partners/audio-plugin-dev-program

For a good list of compatible hardware check out these websites
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Main

Good Luck!

Re: recording vocals

2009-10-08 Thread Andrew Oikle
Stick to 32 bit for audio. 64 bit has absolutely zero benefit for
recording. Benchmarks show that in some cases 64 bit can underperform 32
bit and it's only beneficial to extreme number crunching scientists that
need that level of precision, and also for gigantic databases. Selling 64
bit processors to consumers was a scam to trick people into upgrading their
computers... again. I repeat, 64 bit has practically no use for consumer
use or audio recording. Does anyone here disagree?

Re: [FFADO-devel] debian/ubuntu packages

2009-02-23 Thread Andrew Hunter
Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd revive this thread and let you guys know that I was
able to get ffado 2.0~rc1 into the ubuntu archives for jaunty (9.04)
and Ubuntu Studio will be shipping ffado in the next release. As a
member of the Ubuntu Studio team, I will be responsible for forwarding
any bugs upstream and getting any fixes out.

Looking forward to a great release!

Looks like you are getting 403 errors on the spanish mirror, I would
suggest switching to another mirror or the main archives themselves
(remove es. from es.archive.ubuntu.com for each entry you want to update)

Comment or remove this line, all Ubuntu Studio packages are included in
the official Ubuntu repos. However, Ubuntu Studio 7.04 had its own
custom addon repository. This is no longer supported or available.

According to the ffado project's website, the Presonus firebox is
reported to work. Have you tried using ffado as the backend to jack
instead of FreeBob? (Note, to do this, it will require compiling
libffado yourself and recompiling jack yourself. If you don't want to do
this, wait till I've packaged libffado and put it and jack into a ppa).

the standard method of installing via usbkey shouldn't work (untried).
If it works with the regular alt disks, it should work with ours.

Re: Trouble with setting up Jack

2008-06-08 Thread Andrew Oikle
Carla. By the looks of it, your sound card is compatible. If you haven't
already, you need to understand what Jack is for. If you've used Re-Wire in
the Windoze world, it's like that but better. It's used to route ("wire")
audio inputs and outputs between the music programs and the soundcard, so
it's actually your patchbay. It's also used to synchronize tempo of the
multiple music programs you choose.

For instance I use Ardour to record. To route inputs from the soundcard, I
go to Jack, click "connect" and connect the soundcard inputs on the left
panel (which might appear as 'capture_1' and 'capture_2' under 'alsa_pcm' or
'system') to the tracks I created in Ardour on the right that appear under
'ardour'. You will probably need to click on the [+] to expand and see the
individual connections under each program you see in Jack. You simply
connect these inputs and outputs by click-dragging between them. Ardour
depends on Jack to connect all its tracks to it's master output and bus'es
too. You disconnect by clicking on both sides of the connection and
clicking disconnect. Don't click Disconnect All unless you really mean to
Disconnect All.

So to not get confused, the "input" of the soundcard is actually an "output"
in Jack, called Readable Clients which makes more sense said that way. The
Writeable Clients such as your soundcard output "system or alsa_pcm", is an
Input in Jack but a physical output respectively. Look at like the 'inputs'
to your 'outputs' and the 'outputs' of your 'inputs'.

For each Jack-aware music app (eg. Hydrogen), you'll also see them in the
Jack connections panel. To understand what Alsa is in the Linux world,
Instead of getting a driver for windows from that soundcard's website, Alsa
is the sound driver(s) for all the different sound cards our there, a
one-for-all(most actually), instead of one-for-one in the shitty windows
world. If you get any sound without Jack (ie. the startup sound), your card
is working and you really don't need to understand more about Alsa. Hope
that helps.

Re: 44K vs 96K and so on

2008-05-30 Thread Andrew Oikle
I clearly hear the difference when I record my music at 48khz vs. 44.1khz.
Another extremely important thing to know about sampling rates and
multitrack recording and effect plug-in chains (a mastering engineer told
me), is data bits get mangled in the process, so the higher the sampling
rate the more accurate interpolation you get. He basically told me, I
should have recorded my project at least at 48khz but ideally 96khz. It
sounds like the article only applies to two track final mixdowns. I still
hear a difference.

If it is indeed the ProFire, then that audio interface is not supported

he consider donating the hardware to the project.

Re: right way to upgrade latest jack without braking ubuntustudio?

2008-05-12 Thread Andrew Oikle
You don't need to uninstall the distro versions. Just compile and install,
and those versions will be chosen over the distro ones. BTW, I didn't have
to compile jackd. You only need the development libs (libjack-dev), along
with whatever lib*-dev packages ardour needs to compile.

If you had to modify a udev rule when on gutsy, you will for hardy.

If/when you upgraded, dpkg will ask questions if finds modified conf
files. If that was the case, then you probably overwrote it.

Ardour2 Crashes On Startup

2008-03-19 Thread Andrew Oikle
I began rebuilding my studio and decided to try Ubuntu Studio. I didn't
have too much problem getting my Darla20 card to work. I'm overall
impressed with this distro. I downloaded and installed the latest stable
iso last night.

The problem is Ardour crashes right out of the box when I try to create or
open a workspace. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

As a rural Quebec dial-up user (I'm a anglophone from England living in
a francophone community, I don't know if this make me an

Since you are doing a format anyway, consider creating a separate
partition for your /home folder and any other place you store media,
that way you can format and reinstall the os without haveing to backup
and restore you data everytime (though having regular backups is a good
idea).

[Fwd: [Poll] Changing permissions on raw1394]

2007-11-29 Thread Andrew Hunter
I seem to have sent this message only to the -devel list, so here it is. :)

 Original Message
Subject: [Poll] Changing permissions on raw1394

From: Andrew Hunter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Reply-To: Ubuntu Studio Users Help and Discussion

Technical Discussion <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hey everyone!

If you have not heard about it already, the Ubuntu Studio team is
looking at creating an app that would easily allow users to change
common settings that they may be currently editing by hand.[1]

One of the features that we are considering is changing the permissions
on raw1394 /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules from disk to audio or
video. This is a necessary change currently to enable firewire based
devices to work as a regular user, such as firewire sound cards and
video cameras.

The other alternative solution is to add the user to group "disk",
though this may also cause problems.

The issue with this is that it creates a rather large security risk for
the system, in that any device on the firewire bus can run with root
privileges. This risk is less of an issue for stand-alone machines that
do not use Ethernet over firewire, but is still something to consider.

I would like to stress that it _will not_ be changed by default. All
that we are considering is providing a more accessible way to modify
those settings.

In the future, when Ubuntu and by extension Ubuntu Studio move to the
new firewire stack in the kernel, this issue will be an non-issue. The
new kernel stack provides much finer granularity and control over
permissions on specific devices.

The question then I am posing to you guys is this: How many of you
already change this setting by hand?

Thanks,

Andrew

Freebob has morphed into the FFADO project.

www.ffado.org for the latest list on supported cards.

Definitely a great pre-pro tool. I am looking into packaging it, but the
upstream ships basically a full Firefox and Sunbird with their code. I
think I will have a fun time trying to get that into the universe.

Until then, you can download the Linux version which should work fine on
Ubuntu Studio.

The md5 sum for the gutsy release is available on cdimage.ubuntu.com and
on the other mirrors.

That issue was do to an MOTU moving files between packages without
adding the proper conflicts for the former version. Luke (TheMuso) has
fixed the issue and should not be a problem for anyone else.

Genpo: Call for testing

2007-10-07 Thread Andrew Hunter
Hey everyone,

I have packaged up Genpo [1] for Ubuntu Gutsy, but of course it needs
more testing. Please try it out and file any bugs you come across.

The PPA line is:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/rexbron/ubuntu gutsy main

Also, please note that the organ files are in the genpo-organ package
(automatically installed if you use aptitude) and are stored in
/usr/share/genpo/organs/.

Thanks,
Andrew

choose gutsy's ubuntu studio art

2007-09-24 Thread Andrew
I would have to say flames, they're more striking and vivid. having
used both themes extensively i always fall back to the orange and blue
dancing on my screen.

+1 flames
