Hi,

You said that non-obvious string lacking context is a bug. I cannot
agree with this, becuase this context usually you can find in real
appliacation. If you would open translated programm and try to find
doubtful string/option, you would not need a comment for such string.

In my opinion, before start to translate application, each translator
should first learn it and if he still don't know a meaning of translated
string, then he should contact with developers or submit the bug report.

You don't need "tight contact with" upstream to report bugs (non-obvious
strings lacking context is a bug), just open and account in, say, gnome
bugzilla and file bug report(s) against the relevant module(s), this way
you know for sure that the developers know about the issue and can work
on it.

Hello all.

First - I only share my thoughts about providing more quality in
localisation issues. Don't want to annoy to anybody. *yell* sure was
an intentionally exaggeration word. read it as *appeal*

Second - the problem is take place to be. So I think it need to be
sounds as I think.

At least we have Launchpad Help page about the translation, where it
could be clarified for those, who will placed their project for
translation in future.

I'm sure the original poster knows pretty well, that "yelling" is not
the appropriate form of reporting such issues. I just used his words. :)

My point was that we *template uploaders* have nothing to do with the
*upstream developers* who put those comments into the code.

The original poster did the right thing, he just barked up the wrong
tree. ;) Therefor the "pointer" to upstream.

I'm pretty sure you didn't mean this literally, but imho we should
strive to pave the way for more harmony between translators and
developers, Ubuntu and upstream projects. Don't take it this the wrong
way but your comment didn't really help the issue.

Quite the opposite, you can teach/empower translators to become more
familiarized with how FOSS projects work and how they can become
better citizens. :)

Hi Evan, the Jockey package source code is maintained outside of
Ubuntu and can be looked at http://home.gna.org/jockey/. I recommend
you send an email to the maintainer, and kindly explain the situation
so that he can remedy it.

The package libkpgp is part of the kdepim package, which is part of
the upstream KDE project. I poked around and found out that the
Spanish version for libkpgp is already 100% translated upstream
(http://i18n.kde.org/stats/gui/trunk-kde4/team/es/kdepim/) and there
should not be a need for you to translate it again for Ubuntu.
However, and this is only my opinion, it would be best for you to get
in touch with the KDE Spanish team and report the issue there for the
same reason I've already mentioned. Please, do feel free to ask me
more information on how to do this. :)

Those comments are placed into the upstream source code by upstream
developers. Those would be the ones to yell at. (Except of course if the
string results of a ubuntu patch, then it would be that guy whoever
made/applied the patch).
We template uploaders have nothing to do with that. :)

Thanks for the correction. I added the proper networkmanager from
damned lies, it was a bit tricky to find as it is not listed in the
extra set.

* Get the developer/maintainer's input and hopefully resolve it for good

Hello all!

Want to appeal to all those, who responsible for upload translation
templates onto Rosetta.
I understand, that this mail list not the best place for yell to developers,
but imho better doesn't exist.

The cause of problem is in the poor comment for translators in items, where
are only adjectives placed.
And the problem itself is that adjectives in English doesn't have gender, in
contradistinction to e.g. Russian.

For example 'tall guy' in english is 'высокИЙ парень' in russian, but 'tall
girl' is 'высокАЯ девушка'.
As you see, ending of adjectives is different, depends on gender of noun.

For example - *http://tinyurl.com/cj3r6e

*In this string there are only adjectives and no comments at all about what
it's adjectives about.

So, I ask all who can contribute for better commenting of similar strings do
that.

Yes, I spoke with Arne yesterday and he took care of it for me.

I handle the translations on the Kubuntu docs and I believe Jim Campbell 
handles them for the Xubuntu docs. As for the Edubuntu docs, I would probably 
point at Jordan Mantha.

Thanks for the offer. Maybe Jim would like some help with the Xubuntu docs?

Our system-config-printer-kde has had a lot of development on it
compared to what is in KDE 4.2 so there will be translation work needed.

This file doesn't exist upstream, it should be removed from launchpad.

Got specific examples?  The names will have changed in some cases and
Launchpad isn't very good at detecting that.

I'll have to think how to work around that.  Upstream splits the tars
for packagers but it's not split in SVN.  

However don't worry about desktop- po files for jaunty, the patch
which would make them do anything doesn't work :(

I don't believe xubuntu-docs are automatically imported to Rosetta due to
xubuntu-docs being a universe package. I believe that the templates need to
be manually imported to Rosetta and the translations manually exported back
to the package.

Yes, at least that's how I understand the Ubuntu Dutch Translators'
policies, which are modelled on the Gnome upstream policies. (Note that I'm
"just" the upstream guy ;))

Anything that is not Ubuntu specific should be primarily translated
upstream. Sometimes initial translations for a non-Ubuntu specific package
come from a downstream contributor, but in the end it's best to maintain all
translations as close the source as possible (i.e. upstream).

Thanks for your willingness to help, I'm going to deal with this but I
need just a bit of time to get other critical tasks done. I will email
again shortly to let you know I'm working on it or completed it or
maybe have questions. (I've never before done most of the things you
mention there)

The team is not closed, but due to lots of quality issues we had in the
past, we're not accepting just anyone. Jeroen calls the problem legacy,
but it has been fixed only very recently in launchpad after waiting and
complaining for years.

On the ubuntu-nl forum thread quoted in that question it is also
explained that until we as a team have proper procedures for this, the
team stays closed as we don't want this happening again. The Danish team
are doing the same apparently.

If someone show he knows how to handle translations, (eg, don't touch
upstreams in LP if they accept po files as well), sure he's welcome.

[Jaunty] Obsolete templates

Hi all,

since the topic with obsolete, moved and renamed templates came up, I
decided I'll post the "obsolete" templates from the language-pack
generation logs here, to inform you what has changed.

Obsolete Jaunty templates from Apr. 4:

 * bug-buddy -> need to check
 * desktop_plasmoid-quickaccess -> renamed to
desktop_plasma-widget-quickaccess.pot
 * gnome-netstatus -> need to check
 * plasma_applet_networkmanager -> renamed to
plasma_applet_networkmanagement

I will merge the renamed ones.

How about working with the upstream team to convert the translation to
.po files? I was under the impression that that was the new preferred
method upstream anyway.

I was looking into some other KDE packages here [1] and here [2] (those 
are for 'it' locale) and found these:

- libkitchensync from kdepim: couldn't find it upstream
- kdelibs4 (it's inside kdelibs upstream): this one counts 2397 messages 
upstream stable, Launchpad has 2694
- desktop-kdepim from kdepim: little difference from upstream stable (4 
messages)
- kdebluetooth: this one looks like is coming from the KDE3 branch, is 
it right?
- kdebindings: don't know where this belongs too...

On another note:
- kvkbd: I think it's Kubuntu only, since looks like it's hosted on 
Launchpad and I couldn't find it in KDE resources... am I guessing right?

Will try to look into others too, but it's really a time consuming task...
