Re: Where do we translate indicator-datetime (and family) on Launchpad?
Hi all This was my doing, in recent weeks I dropped the templates from Bionic that are no longer in main - either because they were removed entirely, or just moved to universe. I did not check " X-Ubuntu-Use-Langpack: yes " in their control files (somehow I can't find their packaging branches anymore, like a few years back), so they may still export their templates. In total, we are down by more than a hundred templates, many of them part of the Unity environment. This should help us focus on the still supported components, at least I hoped so. Sorry for the confusion - if there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. Ubuntu Quantal Open for Translation

Remember that according to the release schedule [1] translatable messages might be subject to change until the TranslationDeadline[2], on the week of the 9th of October. During the development cycle, language packs containing translations will be released twice per week [3] except for the freeze periods. Heads up: Translate Firefox and Thunderbird keywords
Hi translators Recently the Firefox and Thunderbird desktop files got keywords support, which means: if a user types one of the keywords into the Unity dash, the relevant application shows up. So it would be important to translate these strings into as many languages as possible. Unfortunately, these applications are not supported on Launchpad Translations, so we have to edit the following wiki pages: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/Wanted/FirefoxDesktop - fill in the translation of "Internet;WWW;Browser;Web;Explorer" under the Keywords column https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/Wanted/ThunderbirdDesktop - fill in the translation of "Email;E-mail;Newsgroup;Feed;RSS" under the Keywords column. As with other keywords, these do not have to be word by word translations. Instead you can list the words that users are likely to search for when they want to browse the web / write a mail. Call for l10n bugs hunting
Hi translators With the release of Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2, we are now really close to the final release. This makes these days perfect time to hunt down all the localization bugs our users reported! We do not want to release Ubuntu Precise with already known l10n bugs, right? So, we need to make sure they are fixed, but first, we need to find them. Here is how: * Go to the bugs page of your team: https://bugs.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-l10n-LL where LL is your language code. Here you can see all the bugs assigned to your localization team. * Many bugs are not assigned to teams, but they are filed against the language packs. For these, go to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu Type the English name of your language (might try the native name of your language too), go through the enormous bug list you get (for example, "German" gives 446 results!) and try to sort out the valid bugs - many bugs only mention language names in contexts unrelated to localization, but I think this is the way to ensure nothing slips through. Assign these to your translation team, so that you can easily track them. Go through the lists, and make sure you fix the translation errors in the corresponding template: set them as Fix Committed. If they are already fixed on an up-to-date Precise system, the better: set them as Fix Released. If the problem cannot be found anymore in the template, set them as Invalid. Current situation is that the original strings in the latest ubuntu-docs maverick package are fixed, but the seven translations that were released as an update are still not. It was expected that the latest full language pack update will contain fixed translations, but this didn't happened. I think the reason of this is that only the original file was patched (see comment #16 of the bug), and its translated versions in the very same package weren't. So, we would need a brand new package generated. Could you help with this? A new translation export is not necessary, only a no change rebuild. Third Natty langpack update delayed
Hi all If you follow [1], you could have expected a call for testing the packages for the third langpack update of Natty. Unfortunately, we had to delay this by a week. The reason for this is that we failed to request a full language pack update as a base of the update, and this makes it impossible to ship the updated gnome-user-docs translations, what was requested in [2] and also here in the last few days. This mistake was corrected yesterday, and next weeks packages should contain the docs too. Only after that will the call for testing be sent out. Help on closing old l10n bugs
Hi I'd like to ask for a little help from translation teams. We have quite a few old localization issues, which are marked as Fix Committed. In theory, these should be already in Natty, but could you please double-check? If they are fixed, please mark the bugs in the Ubuntu Translations project as Fix Released, unless it affects very badly an older release, like bug #577176. Heads up: serverguide translations moved to upstream
Hi translators & docs people I just deactivated the serverguide translation template in Oneiric. Recently that documentation was moved to its own project[1], and we should continue translating it there. The only issue remaining is synchronizing the translations from Oneiric to upstream, and this is where I'd need some help from docs people. I saved the current statistics of the Oneiric template[2], and it looks a lot better than the one in upstream (8 languages at 100%, vs 2, for example). Could you please take the exported translations tarball from [2], and import its content to the upstream repository? [Howto] Build PDF for the Server guide
Hi Last week, I finished translating the Ubuntu Server Guide to Hungarian. The most frequent question under my announcement was: PDF? So, I tried to build it, but it turned out not that this is not really simple. As other teams are nearly at 100%, I think it would be useful for them to know how to build the PDF. 1, You need a copy of the source tree, grab the tarball of the latest Lucid package from here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-docs and extract it. 2, Export the translation you just finished, put it to the serverguide/po directory as ll.po 3, Modify Makefile, replace LN=C with LN=ll, to your language code. 4, You need to run "make serverguide-pdf" and it will put the pdf to build/serverguide/ll/serverguide.pdf - and you are done :). This was the ideal case, but there are some quirks that need to be addressed. First, the build failed for me with a message like this: org.apache.fop.fo.ValidationException: file:/home/gabor/tmp/udlucid/build/serverguide/C/serverguide.fo:9946:1886 : A table-cell is spanning more rows than available in its parent element. This is reported as https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/575771 (I think :)). To fix this, you can use this patch: http://people.ubuntu.com/~kelemeng/sg-build/fix-pdf-build-bug%23575771.patch This was the easy fix, now the build should be successful, but the resulting PDF may not look the best. This is because fop, the tool we use to generate the PDF, uses by default only latin-1 fonts, if your language contains characters not in this code page (őű for my case), they will appear as #. This is documented here: http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/faq.html#pdf-characters To solve this, you need to change the fonts used. First file to modify is libs/ubuntu-pdf.xsl. You should select some nice fonts for your language than contains all your characters - for the variables to change, see my patch (this should work for other Central-European langugaes with latin-2): http://people.ubuntu.com/~kelemeng/sg-build/ubuntu-pdf.xsl.patch Now, you need to tell fop to use these fonts. You need a configuration file for this, I took and modified the example configuration file of fop, the end result is here: http://people.ubuntu.com/~kelemeng/sg-build/fop.xconf. The interesting part is the section, you need to add a few lines like this: You need to use the embed-url property, so that it will be embedded into the PDF (not the default behavior). Also, you need the full path of the ttf of your font chosen in ubuntu-pdf.xsl, and you need such lines for all of the selected fonts - for my case, there were two fonts. You find the diff between the example file and my config file here: http://people.ubuntu.com/~kelemeng/sg-build/fop.xconf.diff (contains some cruft at the end, ignore that :)) The last thing is to tell fop to use the config file. To do this, you will modify the Makefile like this: -fop -fo $(BASE)serverguide/$(LN)/serverguide.fo -pdf $(BASE)serverguide/$(LN)/serverguide.pdf; \ +fop -c fop.xconf -fo $(BASE)serverguide/$(LN)/serverguide.fo -pdf $(BASE)serverguide/$(LN)/serverguide.pdf; \ I have put fop.xconf to the root directory of the ubuntu-docs packages tree. This can be found in a patch format (along with the language code change mentioned in step 3) here: http://people.ubuntu.com/~kelemeng/sg-build/makefile.patch Now, you can run make serverguide-pdf, and the resulting PDF should show up with the new fonts and all your "special" characters. I think there is no such question as "Is it better?". Well, actually
there can be, but deciding it is not the developer's task, but QA's. So
for simplicity, let's say that developers should trust our translations
unconditionally (except for syntax errors). In return, we provide you
with free (as in beer) translations, and don't ask questions like "Is
Debian's or Ubuntu's installer better?" :P
Having the opportunity to correct the various upstream's errors is one
of the most important reasons that I'm working on this particular
distribution. Losing this ability may be acceptable for technical
reasons, like in the case of software in Universe, man and help pages,
or debconf templates. However, I don't think this is a good solution to
address concerns about translation quality.

The changelogs are full with this:
* Resynchronise with Debian. Remaining changes:
- Build only English (for now, until we figure out how to avoid trashing
translations quite so badly with Ubuntu branding etc.).
It seems that there is no point in translating it.

Hi all As you might have noticed, there were some problems with computer-janitor in Lucid, i.e. it showed up untranslated [1]. To resolve this, a recently disabled template was re-enabled, so please update c-j translations here: [2] The current template ([3]) is going to be disabled soon, but now I'm leaving it on until Monday, so that you only have to click through the strings already translated in the current template. Then I tried to list the important things - either because they are Ubuntu-specific, or a highly visible part of the default setup and not completely translated by upstream. Also, we decided to translate first the package descriptions visible in gnome-app-install, there is a table for that too. Sometimes, I update the tables and send a mail to our list to ask for help. Then, translators indicate if they work on a given template and if it's ready to review/done. That's it, no rocket science here, but works pretty well. No "used/suggested elsewhere" for Kubuntu Jaunty docs?
Hi I just noticed something strange: There are many suggestions for Kubuntu docs in Hardy, but none of these are visible in the Intrepid and Jaunty pages. Is it just me or something happened lately I don't know about? What happened to the accessibility guide?
Hi https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/gnome-user-docs/+pots/accessibility-guide this shows 606 untranslated messages in the accessibility guide for French and Hungarian, while they are 100% complete upstream: http://l10n.gnome.org/module/gnome-user-docs#HEAD Also, I remember that some time ago, it was 100% for Hungarian. The import queue shows some failed po files, but how can the already imported messages disappear? ANN: Nightmonkey - new project to help the translation of package descriptions
Hi all The Ubuntu-l10n-hu team proudly presents it's newest development, called Nightmonkey. = What is Nightmonkey? = Nightmonkey is a simple tool to generate html files, which contain links to translatable package descriptions of the packages, which are installable via gnome-app-install. This way, a translation team can see and translate in the vast DDTP templates _exactly_ those package's descriptions, which are visible by the users of gnome-app-install. === Why? === We consider these descriptions more important than others, as g-a-i's target audience are the less experienced users, who "only want to install some programs" and don't care about the details, for such users (at least in Hungary), translated descriptions are more valuable. Translation import queue slowness
Hi Anybody knows, what's going on in the import queue? It's slow, very very slw... For example, yesterday afternoon it[1] had about 3140 approved templates, with evolution translations uploaded on 09.18 at the beginning of the queue, now it has about 3100 approved templates with evolution translations uploaded on 09.18 at the beginning of the queue... This means the installer CD can only support the most commmon languages. Our solution was to make a custom installer CD with proper Hungarian support and distributing it via ubuntu.hu. When will the ubuntu-docs package be updated?
Hi I just want to know, when are updates to the ubuntu-docs package due. Since the last version, our team translated the ubuntu and xubuntu guides and it would be great, if Hungarian users could read them. Probably the Hungarian team is not the only one, which made significant efforts in the last few months (are we? :)), so assume this would be appreciated by other teams too.
