2009-07-08 Thread Bruce Beardall
Just saw this myself. How soon until we get Goobuntu or Uchromtu?

My take? Overall this will be a good thing as, increasingly, the OS will be
irrelevent therefore the OS will increasingly be Linux. Even Microsloth will
find a way to make money out of it.

Everyone's a winner!

Cheers

For me is the HTML 5 standard, does that mean Google might go the

Alan

I think Google will have to look at partners in this and as Ubuntu has a
very large user base, surely, it would be foolish to ignore them. But then
again they did ignore Sun's java for Google Chrome.

With Google introducing new HTML 5 (Web application 1) goodies (Google Wave)
this year and what has been mooted for Google Docs with this new standard I
see a completely different computing experience.

Hi Lee,

Yes, I saw this too, and I am quite tempted. I hope the ATi card has no
issues with Compiz, I would like to put Ubuntu on it though the Linpus
site shows a cube so I would hope it does work. Some have had issues
with Acers before, it is a bit of an outlay for me, would get an extra
couple of gigs of RAM to bolster the system.

[ubuntu-uk] Suggest a graphics card

2009-07-08 Thread javadayaz
I am thinking of installing a graphics into my machine finally.

Can you please suggest a cheap graphics card?

It must:

PLAY NICE WITH UBUNTU. (easy to set up. no problem with compiz)
display HD for a screen size of at least 37.
Not require extra cooling.

Looking forward to your comments!

will equal more progress. Right now almost anyone i speak to has no

Well there is this one at about £45...
http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/vga-cards/msi-nx9400gt-md512h

It's got an NVidia 9400 Chipset so although it's not the fastest card
out there it should be fine for Compiz, basic 3D gaming and HD media
playback (IIRC you need to enable VDPAU with something like Mplayer or
MythTV to get HD acceleration).

You don't say what resolution the TV is, it could be anything really (a
bigger size doesn't necessarily mean a higher resolution) but I would
assume that this card would happily play HD video at 720p (1280x720) or
1080p (1920x1080) resolutions.

It would require the proprietary NVidia drivers installing but this
should be a simple couple of clicks to enable the restricted NVidia driver.

It also has a big heat sink rather than a cooling fan so it will be
completely silent.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Suggest a graphics card

Im yet to buy the television so i dont know the resolution.i dont really
need it for gaming as i dont really that often anyway.

I would definately like to get some HD viewing but i dont think i would be
able to stream a HD signal to the TV (see earlier post :) )

That fact that it is silent is brilliant!

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Suggest a graphics card

2009-07-08 Thread Adam Bagnall
If you're not planning on gaming, just using HD for video and compiz
then a low powered nvidia card would be fine. An nvidia 8400gs only
costs about £25 from ebuyer and most of them have passive cooling (no
fan and therefore silent). With these nvidia cards you can playback HD
video with very little cpu usage and they are power efficient too.

Nokia submitted a document that looked like it was written by a 5 year old
which basically said 'We don't want OGG media in HTML5 just in case someone
finds a patent after we have implemented it that means everyone has to pay for

It seems a strange stance for Nokia to take given their reliance on
Maemo and Linux.

With Microsoft, I think it's very difficult to quantify them into
necessarily good or bad due to their size. They undoubtedly have some
very shady business practices but I'm sure some sections have no agendas
besides making software.

Have you seen such things as this:

extracts:
===
Independent consultants should write columns and articles, give
conference presentations and moderate stacked panels, all on our
behalf (and setting them up as experts in the new technology,
available for just $200/hour). Independent academic sources should
be cultivated and quoted (and research money granted). Independent
courseware providers should start profiting from their early
involvement in our technology. Every possible source of leverage
should be sought and turned to our advantage.

A stacked panel, on the other hand, is like a stacked deck: it is
packed with people who, on the face of things, should be neutral, but
who are in fact strong supporters of our technology.

I think it's still early days for those kinds of concerns. The Chrome OS

And like others have said, we want some high profile non-Apple competition
to raise awareness of the choices available. If that is achieved, it'll
change the marketplace anyway and largely make the web browser issue a moot
point.

One thought I had about the Google Chrome OS is Microsoft, or the
european legislators will push for the web browser to removed from the
OS to match what they expect from Microsoft.

That's expensive, same thing on ebay for less than £9...

Is it? The Seidio battery has rave reviews and I've seen much criticism of
cheaper offerings. The 2300 mAh batteries don't seem to have the oomph that
their specs would suggest. Would you 'trust' a cheap 2850 mAh battery in
your phone.

The Seidio battery is expensive, and with shipping, a third more so again, but
I do think it would complete my G1 nicely.

iirc the euro. requirement was not so much for there to be no browser
at all, but for the option of allowing other browsers and a removal of
IE if the user wanted.

The situation now proposed by MS that Windows 7 will be shipped with
no browser at all in europe was something the legislators expressed
surprise about, and suggested that was not necessary.

'in terms of potential remedies if the Commission were to find that
Microsoft had committed an abuse, the Commission has suggested that
consumers should be offered a choice of browser, not that Windows
should be supplied without a browser at all.'

 It must:

PLAY NICE WITH UBUNTU. (easy to set up. no problem with compiz)
display HD for a screen size of at least 37.
 Not require extra cooling.

 Looking forward to your comments!

Don't talk to me about the 8400GS. I've got one in my machine, and
while it's fine using its VGA output, there's something wrong with the
DVI when using NVidia's Linux driver (it was fine when I was still on
Windows and it's fine with the free drivers...). Even when I set the
DVI output to a resolution and refresh rate that my monitor specifically
says is supported in its manual, I get a picture mode not supported
message - and i've tried with a TV with a DVI-in as well, just to make
sure. The usual workaround of disabling DynamicTwinView doesn't help
either.

In short, beware if you want to use DVI.

Vinu

PS this is _not_ a request for help with it - I can live with VGA.

I have a new pc, and it has a Nvidea Something 5500 in it. I say
something because it was having problems, so it had to go back, so I
cant remember exactly which one it was. That was just using Windows. I
am just wondering, would it work with Ubuntu? I have yet to install it.
Was going to when it came back. Sorry to come in and hyjack the thread,

[ubuntu-uk] The Stolen Earth

2009-07-08 Thread David King
Interesting podcast, entertaining as usual.

However, I did not hear any references to the Stolen Earth, which title
I assume you took from a recent Doctor Who episode. But no mention of
the Doctor or the Daleks...

I wonder what a Dalek running on Ubuntu would be like?

:) As you may have noticed, every episode this season is named after a
Doctor Who episode :)

We try to allude to episode content in the title, the laptop theft
section this week led to Stolen Earth.

I wonder what a Dalek running on Ubuntu would be like?

It would of course exterminate all other operating systems!

Cheers,
Al.

I have a Palit Nvidia 9500GT passive cooled that cost me about £50 IIRC
about 9months ago. Good enough card for me - works fine. VGA DVI.
