not sure if there is an equivalent project for j2me or other that would run

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Blue tooth

2010-03-29 Thread A J Binnie
My Sony Ericsson K800i has a remote control facility and it works with
Karmic for controlling audio and moving the mouse about the screen. I've had
a quick squint at the user guide for the Nokia 6301 and it does seem to have
a remote control facility. Try pairing it up with your computer and see what
happens - mine phone automatically asks me if I want to use it as a remote.

On a slightly similar topic, I've been unable to sync my contacts between my
laptop and the same phone. I can send files from the phone to the laptop.
I've been trying to use Multisync. Any ideas, folks?

Um. How would a phone work as a mouse? What do you have in mind? Do
you want to use the up/down/left/right buttons on the phone to move
the PC's mouse pointer? If so, no, I don't think so.

I have heard of a project to make a phone's camera work as an optical
mouse, so you put your phone on the desk & slid it around. It's
clumsy, inaccurate, kills your phone battery & scratches & dirties up
the back of the phone and its camera's lens, though. Can't see why
anyone would want to do it, myself.

Sounds to me like an appearance/gnome-settings-daemon thing. There are
a number of things to try.

1) Restart
2) Change your window control theme
3) Change your colour scheme
4) Delete or move ~/.openoffice.org/ and start with a plain profile.

[ubuntu-uk] Open Office 3.2 problem on 9.10

2010-03-29 Thread Gordon Burgess-Parker
I installed 3.2 0n 9.10 using the instructions on this web site:
http://techie-buzz.com/foss/how-to-install-openoffice-3-2-in-ubuntu-9-10.html

The install went OK apart from a mysterious message about the registry
(I didn't know Linux HAD a "registry!) and all seems to be working OK
apart from the fact that the File-Edit-View etc bar is black in all
modules and the options can't be seen until they are clicked on.
Anyone come across this, and is there a way of fixing it?

I'm interested in getting involved in the install party. Our group is
just starting up a community cloud project and I'm happy to talk about
some Ubuntu/LTSP pilots we're currently running with NGOs.

If the venue is small, I think it might work to do two separate events -
one oriented towards business/NGOs and the other a more informal 'do'
for people in general who might like to experiment with Ubuntu.

Either date is fine for me, but I think it's best not to clash with
other events that people will want to go to?

I dunno about £25 - I think it might discourage quite a few people.
Surely there must be some sponsorship to be got? Anyone got any ideas
about who to approach? I'll give it some thought . . .

If we want to do a week day event aimed more towards, but not exclusively
towards businesses then I can probably get a good sized venue at no cost
(with some arm twisting).
But the prerequisite will be that refreshments be purchased on premises...

Obviously, if I can say that we would be expecting 'X' attendees, the larger
the 'X' the easier the arm twisting...

2010-03-29 Thread John Stevenson
Hello James,
Thanks for getting back to me on the size of your venue. I feel it is still
a good option and would just put a limit on how many people can come.

I like the idea of using different weekends, perhaps two consecutive
Saturdays. People would need to be very intererested to turn up on a Sunday
I think.

Do you have projectors in both rooms?

I should have some more information about my options this week, so will keep
you posted.

Thank you

Re: [ubuntu-uk] London Ubuntu install party?

2010-03-29 Thread pa...@fossbox.org.uk

I'll give it some thought . . .

Re: [ubuntu-uk] London Ubuntu install party?

2010-03-29 Thread James Thomas
Hi there,

Unfortunately the venue will only accommodate 20 people comfortably across
two meeting rooms.
12 in one and 8 in the other. More people can be seated, but desk space is
at a premium.

I would be happy to run events over the weekend. Special dispensation would
have to be garnered for a weekday as the rooms are in constant use.

Now we could run the same material Saturday/Sunday so that more people can
take part or hold a two day event over different weekends. Also I am quite
happy to make it a regular thing. Once/Twice a month type thing but would
need to see how it grows.
If it gets too large, I may be able to source another venue for free but
they would expect some money to go across the bar...

Alan Lord, I may be able to get this venue during the day, Friday, if you
want to do a Business Focused event.

Let me know your thoughts.

Cheers

James Thomas

If you manage to get this working, please let us know. It would be
interesting to see the results.
