Re: [ubuntu-uk] A relatively quick £100 for anyone i n London who can do this

2009-02-24 Thread Rowan
Thanks to both of you. If you meant you found it offensive that I
offered money, then, again, I apologise. I would be happier still if it
could be sorted out for free.

I don't require anyone to come to my home to deal with it, I'm not that
disabled. I can bring it to anywhere in London. If Canonical only offer
telephone and email support, though, that isn't what I want. I
seriously want someone I can trust to do it personally, hands on, and
explain to me what they're doing, too.

I'm free pretty much any time, weekday or weekend, day or evening. etc.
That's the advantage of being disabled, you don't have to work for a
living. I have the occasional appointment, so I need to check any
suggested date, though in the next few weeks I only have two or three
appointments that I need to keep time clear for, so it's probable that
any time anyone suggests would be fine.

Don't worry Rowan, you didn't hurt anyone at London bugjam's feelings, at
least from what I could see anyway! If you had emailed one of us in private,
I and/or others would've happily came around to help you out. Unfortunately
now however I am back in Wales and thus cannot attend London to help fix
things however there are a few Ubuntu-UK users in London on this mailing
list. What I and some others found to be a bit odd was the £100 offer and
hence why I didn't personally persue it any further. Many of us here, from
my past experience, would happily help you out for free as this is what our
understanding of Free Software is supposed to be about, in part, the help &
share with others freely. I'm sure that soon someone many volunteer to help
out who is in London.

With kind regards,
Chris.

I don't know if you're aware of the paid support from Canonical:
http://www.canonical.com/services/support

and I also don't know whether it would be what you are looking for, but
I thought I'd point it out. Obviously they won't send someone round to
your house, but you get telephone and email support.

I hope I didn't hurt people's feelings by sounding as if I couldn't be
bothered to condescend to come to your Bug Jam. The fact is, although I
am a bit reluctant to mention it, that I am semi-disabled. I mean, I can
walk around like other people, but it hurts. I have sciatica.

Anyway, the offer stands. But it won't be a complete piece of cake,
because I really want anyone who agrees and is able to do this to not
just recompile the driver and install the DKMS, but also to show me how
to use the DKMS in case of future update conflicts, and give the thing a
general once-over to ensure there are no other non-default ubuntu
software modules lurking in there. I have asked the suppliers for this
information, too, so I may be able to cross-check this.

[ubuntu-uk] A relatively quick £100 for anyone i n London who can do this

2009-02-22 Thread Rowan
As I have explained, I have a brand new machine with ubuntu
pre-installed, which was assembled in the USA. A kernel update caused
the driver to become inoperable because it is not the default driver
expected by the update. I am trying to find someone in London who for a
fee of say £100 will undertake to recompile the driver, and also to
install the utility called DKMS, which is apparently able to monitor and
control these conflicts. Anyone in London who wants to earn a relatively
quick £100 is invited to contact me via this thread or by email:
