Hi John,

Your initial email got me interested in Lightning, which I didn't know
about, and I have since installed it along with Google provider on my
laptop and desktop, so thanks for introducing it to me! I also had the
problem that when I installed lightning from the repositories google
provider would not work. It turned out that the version in the
repositories was lightning 0.8 and not 0.9 which google provider
requires. So I had to uninstall that version and get the latest version
of lightning from the Mozilla add-on page. Once I did that I was able to
use google provider.

I am not sure from your email what problems you are having exactly. You
say that lightning 0.9 does not work, but I get the impression that it
might just be Google Provider that isn't working as you say: "One thing
that doesn't appear is the log in box for google." Do you mean by this
that when you try to add a new calendar you don't get the "Google
Calendar" option in the "Format:" field of the "Create New Calender"
dialog? Could you be more specific about what exactly isn't working? For
example do you get the calendar and task views, or does nothing at all
happen when you install Lightning?

Tom

I may be teaching you to suck eggs but I run Thunderbird 2, Lightning
0.9 and Provider for Google calendar .0.5.1 and it works perfectly.

Looking back over the emails you seem to be trying to download a program
whereas Lightning and Provider for Google calendar are addons.
They are available by going to
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/sunbird/addon/4631 for the Provider.
(It says it is for Sunbird but it works with Thunderbird.) and

These Release Notes cover what's new, download and installation
instructions and known issues for Lightning 0.9 Please read these notes
and the bug filing instructions before reporting any bugs to Bugzilla.
What's New in Lightning 0.9

Lightning 0.9 is the latest release of our calendar extension for
Mozilla Thunderbird®. We recommend that all users upgrade to this latest
version.

The following features have been added to Lightning 0.9:

* Events spanning days now have a visual indicator indicating them
as connected events
* When reloading a remote calendar a progress indicator is now shown
* The so-called "minimonth" (small calendar month in the upper left)
has been given a visual overhaul
* The calendar views (day, week, multiweek, month) have been given a
visual overhaul
* The today pane can now be displayed in calendar mode and task mode
as well
* CalDAV support and interoperability with various CalDAV servers
has been improved
* iMip/iTip support (support for email invitations) has been greatly
improved
* The application stability and memory consumption has been greatly
improved
* Lightning 0.9 is intended to be the last release for the
Thunderbird 2 series. For the future we are planning to integrate
Lightning fully into the upcoming Thunderbird 3 release
* A full list of changes that have gone into this release can be
found on The Rumbling Edge website

Release Date: September 23, 2008
Downloading and Installing
Downloading Lightning 0.9

Before installing, make sure your computer meets the system
requirements. Mozilla.org provides Lightning for Windows, Linux,
Solaris, and Mac OS X in a variety of languages. Windows users must have
Windows XP or later.

IMPORTANT: Install the updated timezones for Windows XP or later.
Information on obtaining the updated timezones can be found in Microsoft
Knowledge Base article 951072.
Not updating your Windows timezones will result in unreliable and
erroneous display and entry of time data! Be sure to do this!

Windows releases prior to Windows XP are working but may display event
times erroneously due to outdated timezones on the operating system
level. This can be fixed using unofficial patches. Users should read the
known issues section for more information.

To get Lightning 0.9, download it from
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/lightning/download.html

Installing Lightning

Lightning runs as an extension for Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.x

IMPORTANT: If you have been using the old Calendar Extension, be sure to
backup the ICS file that it put in your profile directory, and uninstall
the Calendar Extension before installing Lightning. After you have
installed Lightning, you can then import your old events and tasks from
the backed up ICS file.

   1. Right-click the download link and choose "Save Link As..." to
download and save the .XPI file to your your hard disk
   2. In Mozilla Thunderbird, under the "Tools" menu, open the "Add-ons
Manager"
   3. Click the "Install" button, locate and select the .XPI file you
downloaded in step 1, and click "OK"
   4. Restart Mozilla Thunderbird

In Google choose settings, calendars, private address, copy the XML link

In Thunderbird
Select Calendar, New Calendar, On the network, Goolge Calendar, and
paste the location from Google and all should be OK.

For those on Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) AND are getting the problem with File /
New… / Calendar being greyed out (even after clicking the Calendar icon
in the lower left of TB)…. This fixed is for me:

http://blogs.sun.com/beuchelt/entry/thunderbird_lightning_and_the_ubuntu

Using the Synaptic Package Manager, I searched for libstdc and marked
the version 5 for install and installed. Uninstalled both Lightning and
Google iCal addons and closed / reopened TB and followed the above
EXCELLENT install howto - and voila… now working.

Which solved a problem I had. It may have been updated in the latest
versions but it's worth a thought.

Hi John, I've just run a test, and it seems to work. Here is a
step-by-step of how I did it, perhaps it will help:

1 - installed thunderbird from repositories (version 2.0.0.19 (20090105))
2 - installed lightning from mozilla website
(http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/lightning/ - version 0.9)
restart thunderbird
3 - installed Google calender provider from website
(https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/4631 - version
0.5.1) restart thunderbird
4 - added my calendar from google, using the private ical address
under the calendar's settings. click the ical button, right click on
the link given and select "copy link location" - then it's easy to
paste it into thunderbird
5 - right clicked on calendar in thunderbird, select properties,
unticked the read-only option
6 - I then restarted thunderbird and was asked to supply my gmail
username and password for write access. I somehow landed up with a
duplicate calendar which I deleted, but make sure that the one you
keep is the one which is not read-only.

I also got a lot of alarms popping up and couldn't get them to go
away, I found it was because thunderbird was waiting for a password
prompt in the background. I moved the alarms window around the
screen, and then entered the password. I could then dismiss the
alarms.

I can now add or delete events and they appear in my online google calendar.

HTH... :-)

Hi, thank you all for your messages. I have tried everything that you
have posted but when I try install, nothing. I looked in the
Repositories, and Lightening isnt in there, at least I cant find it,
 so
looked on the site, and that is where it wont install from.

I really need this to work, as I rely on my calendar, my memory is
 not good.

 I will keep trying though.

Hi, well, I have been trying everything that you have all suggested, and
I have a few problems. The Lightning 0.9 wont work with this version of
Firefox and Ubuntu 8.10. Doesnt matter how much I've tried it just wont
work. The version in the repositories works, but it wont work with the
google calendar, its showing errors all over the place. I am wondering
if I can find a older version of the google provider, to work with the
older version of Lightning. Also, Caldev? only works with Sunbird, not
lightning, according to the Mozilla people. So, I still havent been able
to work out how to get the calendar working, which is a bit frustrating.

I hope I have explained that right now.

Hi John,

First of all, go to applications -> add/remove programs and get rid of
the lightning we installed previously.

Then grab the lightning 0.9 installer from
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2313

Then open Thunderbird and go to Tools -> Add Ons and then click the
install button that appears on that window.

Then browse to wherever you downloaded the lioghtning add on (probab;y
on your Desktop I would guess) and open it.

Click the install now button when it appears and restart thunderbird.
You should now have Lightning 0.9 installed.

Hope that helps!

Brilliant, thank you, this has worked to a certain extent. I have the
calendar installed, and the provider installed, but in the addons box
there is a yellow exclamation mark, with a message saying 'Requires
additional items. When I click on the reload remote calendar to get the
dates on the netbook, it all goes haywire, an alarm box opens and all
the alarms go off for about 8 alarms and I cant turn it off.

But we are getting there though.

Does anybody know how to get rid of that, and what extra bit the
provider needs to get it working?

Thank you.,

Oh dear, now I feel really stupid. Thanks to the person who pointed out
the spelling mistake. Duhhh. Thank you so much also for the vid, that
really helped. I went through that again, and Lightening is now
installed, I followed the instructions on the page sent, but its not
showing any things from the calendar on google. I entered the address
into the box properly. I am not sure why that is. It even had the box
pop up to add my username and password.

I will have to play around with it for a while I think, to see if I can
get it to work.

Thank you so much for all your help. I really appreciate it.

To get Lightning working with Thunderbird and synchronising with Google
Calendar all you need are these two add-ons to Thunderbird. I use this on my
work LAN on Hardy.

Ignore all the junk on my Desktop, I don't have a vanilla install to do

Lightning is in the repositories so you should be able to install it
from synaptic (or your package manager of choice). It is in universe
which is not enabled by default, more details (and how to enable it)

I'm not sure about the Google calendar provider though.

Not quite - there's an extra step: you have to save the add on .xpi
file to your computer (eg in Desktop); then, in Thunderbird, go to
Tools/Add-ons, and click 'Install' at the bottom left of the window.
Navigate to your .xpi file and 'open'.

I may be remembering things very incorrectly but I thought thunderbird
handled addons like firefox.
Check in the tools menu and see if the addons option is there...it may
have a search like in firefox 3 else here is the download page:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2313

Google calendar provider isnt required, you just set up a caldav
calendar link (I use this for sunbird...the standalone version of
lightning) here are the instructions (just choose the sunbird option

[ubuntu-uk] A thank you and a quiery....

2009-02-12 Thread John
Last night Mike came over to install Ubuntu 8.10 on my netbook. It went
went well, and I just wanted to say thank you so much for helping me
out. I really appreciate it. I have been fiddling with it this morning,
and getting myself acquainted with the system, and installing a few
extra things, which I need. Its working really well, and I've had no
problems with it at all. I'm using it now to send this e-mail.

I just wanted to say thank you so much, I really appreciate what you did.

Also I use Thunderbird as my e-mail client, and have installed it, with
no problems, but I also use Lightening as my Calendar, connected to
google calendar. For some reason, I cant seem to install Lightening. I
was just wondering, if somebody could tell me which installation I need
to use, plus the add on, Google Calendar Provider, to connect with
google. Does anybody know what I need?

Thank you.

John.
