Hey Lucy, Thanks for CC'ing me in. Sorry! I had intended to be more proactive on this but due to me being occupied chasing Barcamp Manchester (whih is the 7th and 8th of november) Sponsorship stuff, I've been worked off my feet and unfortunately not been able to give this the energy I had hoped I would be able to. That said, it's really great to see people taking the lead. :) Anyway, see comments inline. :) Lucy wrote: > 2009/10/15 Gordon Allott : >> On Wed, 2009-10-14 at 17:17 +0100, Lucy wrote: >> >>> I suggest that we go with the Pitcher and Piano, and start planning >>> publicity and things. Well I'm not 100% sure there is the demand but I think we can still work with this. Perhaps we can take a leaf from the NWDC (North West Digital Communities) Christmas party which was at the piano and pitcher last year. There was no specific guidance towards whether the venue was young people friendly - so we came anyway - and there weren't any issues as far as I know. It's not a great approach to the core issue, but it's by far the easiest way of dealing with it which seems to work to some extent. > Since it's a pub the start time doesn't matter as much as it did for > the BBC, but does 7pm sound okay or 6pm? The thing about pubs is they generally don't care about the odd youngish person who goes *into* a bar before ~7pm so long as they don't try and go in and out after that or try and buy anything. > It would be really nice to have some posters and some buttons to put > on blogs to publicise the event. Downloading ISOs on the day over wifi is always going to have issues. Last time we had plenty of people bring CDs to the event. Must remember the 64-bit Desktop ISOs next time though! Due to scheduling issues last night at Revolution, we re-located to Pitcher and Piano. We were so warmly received there that we've decided to relocate GeekUp to the Pitcher and Piano for the foreseeable future! The 30th is available and free to use, although a DJ will be "in residence" from 10pm - I don't know whether that will be an issue? They'll mark off the "Snug" area at the back, plus all the rest of the area under the balcony for the event if we're expecting 80 odd people. The wifi works well, but somewhat annoyingly, doesn't all the download of ISO images, MP3s or OGGs. That said, SSH does work, and if someone has the foresight to download all the available ISOs from a mirror to bring with them on the day... it shouldn't be an issue - the wifi would then just be used for social media sites, IRC and the like. As the date is free, I've asked them to pencil in the release, using my name as a contact. That said, there may be an issue with me attending, as my wife may potentially have already booked us into a hotel for the weekend! Trust me not to have shared my calendar with her! D'oh! The manager's name is Hannah, and the general manager's name is Sion. Their phone number is 0161 839 6117. Thanks very much Jon. Power and wifi would be very good. I know both venues have a big screen, which would be nice but not essential. I'm a little concerned about noise levels but I guess we can't do much about that. I think we should aim for Friday 30th October, since, as others have pointed out, the Saturday is Halloween and is likely to cause some problems with people. well there have been any number of reviews of Linux desktops by journalists who know about Windows and compare it at every step to Windows. This just happens to be one coming from the other direction, which he acknowledges from the start. I don't think anyone sensible would draw any conclusions from any single article (on any subject) but this does appear to be a useful contribution to the mix. Alan. Sean Miller wrote: > Hmmm with all due respect he mentions Linux so much I doubt any > impartial reader will take much notice of his comments. Given that the author is completely upfront about his allegiances, perhaps his frequent references to GNU/Linux are not too unreasonable. And he is doing a 'compare and contrast' review with other operating systems, so maybe you'd expect him to mention OS X and GNU/Linux a lot. Of course, few Windows users, will ever read an article like this, so it won't influence anybody much - they get their computers from PC World with Windows already installed. And most Windows users don't ever install Windows, so many of the author's comments - for example, about partitioning, relative ease of installation, and dual booting - are redundant. But compared with a lot of stuff you read from FOSS zealots, I thought this piece was balanced, thoughtful and temperate. mac -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

I didn't say that his arguments were not valid, simply that the whole way he writes gives the impression he is "out to get Windows" which (for me at least, and I am a Ubuntu user remember - so "already converted") makes the whole piece less persuasive. I suspect that he has not realised he's done it, but I would like to read an objective review of Windows 7... the little "bullsh!t filter" in my brain starts sending out alarm bells only a couple of paragraphs into that piece... he paints a very different picture of Windows 7 than my experience running it in a VM has given me. And he keeps saying "which, of course, is done far better in KDE..." or whatever. If the article was called "KDE vs. Windows 7, the Verdict" and had a table with comparisons then it would be rather good... ie. Eye Candy - KDE 90%, Windows 7 80% Security - KDE 90%, Windows 7 40% Compatibility with iTunes - KDE 25%, Windows 7 90% etc. Sean -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

I don't know where it could be, but maybe something in the afternoon on saturday or Sunday would be ideal for under 18s I think. Yey! I'd not noticed the date being announced otherwise I would have posted something. I've put up a poll to decide on the best date. Please vote! http://doodle.com/4td2szs2zcahkhik In terms of venue, I think we may have outgrown the BBC ;) I suggest somewhere like Revolution or the Pitcher & Piano on Deansgate. I'm not sure what the policy would be on under 18s though, so if anyone has any better suggestions I'd be glad to hear them. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
[ubuntu-uk] Manchester Karmic (9.10) party
Hi, Sooo its that time of year again when we need to start organising release parties and since I am closest to Manchester.. :) So yeah this thread is a good place for discussion on that, venues? dates? ideas? Karmic is released on thursday (always a thursday) the 29th october but there's nothing that says it has to be held on a thursday. so yeah, venues, dates and any ideas of things to do there are all welcome.
