An iPod has two methods of storage. It works as a mountable drive and as an
encrypted filesystem and database which is only accessible through iTunes.
I would think that only files in the database are viewable on the screen.

2013-05-07 Thread James Morrissey
To get the ipod working as an ipod, not just as an external drive, try
GTKPod or try transferring songs through Rhythmbox.

Just a note, when you plug into GTKPod it sets up the device so that it
reads as an iPod. I am not sure what will happen to your data which is
already on it, so you might want to back things up.

Also, last time i checked GTKPod had a problem which meant that it crashed
if files other than music were synced with the ipod. This means you have to
remove all the album artwork from your collection, or sync one album at a
time.

[ubuntu-uk] iPod Text not centred.

2007-08-23 Thread Andrew Jenkins
Hi all,

I used to use my iPod Nano with gtkPod under Mandriva
LE2005 but have now switched to using Amarok1.4 running
under Ubuntu F.F.7.04.

My problem (though small) is that the displayed text of
a playing track on the iPod is no longer central but is
all left-justified. The mp3 tracks stored on the computer
are the same as before and have not had the ID3 Tags
touched. The data (i.e. Track Title, Artist, Album) is
correct but is just not as neat as it was when displayed
centrally on the iPod.

Needless to say, under gtkPod it was fine. This is not a
setting in the iPod that has changed as tracks that are
on it that were previously loaded with gtkPod still show
centrally, just the Amarok-loaded tracks are affected.
Has anyone else had this or ever better knows how to put
it back in the middle?

Regards,
Andrew Jenkins.

Although the built in bittorrent client does work, it is pretty basic -

Actually Deluge isn't very well supported at all - there's only one guy
working on it, and releases/fixes are rather infrequent. There's a native
linux client for Azureus or, if you're using gnome and don't mind a few KDE
libraries, there's KTorrent which I find very good also..

[ubuntu-uk] iPod management

2007-08-13 Thread Josh Blacker
Hi all,

Got a text from a friend earlier asking if she bought a new desktop
from dell with Ubuntu, would she be able to use all her old files etc.
I explained that yes Ubuntu can deal with jpgs (she was worried she
wouldn't be able to see all her photos!) and OpenOffice is compatible

iPod. (She was most thrilled that not only does Azureus run on Linux,
but that Ubuntu has a built-in torrent client, but that's another
matter).

I explained that the necessary codecs for mp3s and so on are easy to
install if of dubious legality (I guess they aren't pre-loaded on the
Dells, or are they?), but I must admit I have no idea about managing
an iPod from Ubuntu. I have most of the songs I want on mine anyway,
and still dual-boot so can use iTunes when need be.

She is seriously considering this purchase (if not for the very
present moment at least when she returns from a long stay in Senegal),
so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

My Wife's iPod shuffle works fine under Ubuntu using Rhythmbox, so I
guess other iPods will too.

The thing you may have problems with is music purchased from the iTunes
store. It's all locked up with DRM so you'll have to burn it to an
audio CD then rip it back to mp3 or ogg using either iTunes or something
like Sound Juicer under Ubuntu.

Amarok (again kde libraires but no problem) is very sophisticated and

Alternatives to itunes will I suspect be effective in their various

be possible to convert maybe one way but not back again, but I am not

Hi,
I've had a play with Rhythmbox and a little bit of Banshee. In neither
of these can I seem to be able to create playlists on my nano,
although editing existing ones worked on Rhythmbox (and they didn't
show up at all on Banshee). Gtkpod couldn't find my nano because it
wasn't where it was expecting, and looks all a bit rather more
technical than I am looking for.

I will have a look at Amarok with regards to this, and then probably
post up my experiences on here if that sounds like a good idea? Lots
of people, especially students, have iPods and I think this is an

An alternative approach could be to consider running linux *on* the ipod.

I was surprised and heartened two weeks ago when I asked in my local
(windows based) PC shop if they needed any more of my FOSS/ubuntu
leaflets. They could take some more yes. I asked the guy if he used it
- open source or linux? He said -
'oh, yes, on my ipod!'
(so he could play videos apparently)

Go into System Preferences Removable Drives and Media.

Choose the Multimedia Tab.

With the Portable Music Players option you can select which app starts
