Subject: Re: [ubuntu-uk] London Ubuntu install party?

I'm interested in getting involved in the install party. Our group is
just starting up a community cloud project and I'm happy to talk about
some Ubuntu/LTSP pilots we're currently running with NGOs.

If the venue is small, I think it might work to do two separate events -
one oriented towards business/NGOs and the other a more informal 'do'
for people in general who might like to experiment with Ubuntu.

Either date is fine for me, but I think it's best not to clash with
other events that people will want to go to?

I dunno about £25 - I think it might discourage quite a few people.
Surely there must be some sponsorship to be got? Anyone got any ideas
about who to approach? I'll give it some thought . . .

I'm working with cloud stuff at the moment, some of them involving
Ubuntu so I'm happy to help on that topic. Between us, we should be able
to come up with something that makes sense. If we want to demo it, we
will need a couple of servers though.

Hi John,

There is a Plasma in one room and a projector in the other.
Last time I hosted the bugjam we had good attendance on Saturday and
Sunday...

Cheers.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] London Ubuntu install party?

2010-03-29 Thread James Thomas
If we want to do a week day event aimed more towards, but not exclusively
towards businesses then I can probably get a good sized venue at no cost
(with some arm twisting).
But the prerequisite will be that refreshments be purchased on premises...

Obviously, if I can say that we would be expecting 'X' attendees, the larger
the 'X' the easier the arm twisting...

2010-03-29 Thread John Stevenson
Hello James,
Thanks for getting back to me on the size of your venue. I feel it is still
a good option and would just put a limit on how many people can come.

I like the idea of using different weekends, perhaps two consecutive
Saturdays. People would need to be very intererested to turn up on a Sunday
I think.

Do you have projectors in both rooms?

I should have some more information about my options this week, so will keep
you posted.

Thank you

Re: [ubuntu-uk] London Ubuntu install party?

2010-03-29 Thread James Thomas
Hi there,

Unfortunately the venue will only accommodate 20 people comfortably across
two meeting rooms.
12 in one and 8 in the other. More people can be seated, but desk space is
at a premium.

I would be happy to run events over the weekend. Special dispensation would
have to be garnered for a weekday as the rooms are in constant use.

Now we could run the same material Saturday/Sunday so that more people can
take part or hold a two day event over different weekends. Also I am quite
happy to make it a regular thing. Once/Twice a month type thing but would
need to see how it grows.
If it gets too large, I may be able to source another venue for free but
they would expect some money to go across the bar...

Alan Lord, I may be able to get this venue during the day, Friday, if you
want to do a Business Focused event.

Let me know your thoughts.

Cheers

James Thomas

I'm working with cloud stuff at the moment, some of them involving
Ubuntu so I'm happy to help on that topic. Between us, we should be able
to come up with something that makes sense. If we want to demo it, we
will need a couple of servers though.

Personally (given I'm one of the organisers and attendees of OggCamp)
I'd prefer if it was a different weekend, but that's up to you and
your fellow organisers to figure out :)

Depends what compelling things there are to see and do. We (OggCamp)
have managed to secure sponsors so we don't have to charge people for
entry, but I'm sure people would be willing to pay a small fee. 25
quid is not small in my mind.

I do agree that Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud would be interesting to many
businesses and therefore there is good incentive to do an event with that
topic on a weekday, i.e. Friday.

I would also need help with Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud to do that topic an
justice. I don't have enough practical experience to do the topic justice
by in detail. I was going to do some work on UEC this weekend, but have
been a little busy planning.

I've emailed James earlier today to see what size of venue he has. If he
has enought capacity and is able to do a week day, then that would fit in
with what you suggest. I had the impression that James' kind offer was for
a day during the weekend, but am happy to be corrected.

I am keeping any options open, but need to get some decisions made this
coming week to give everyone enough notice.

I am open to doing a targeted event on the Saturday afternoon, more for
developers and admins who support developers. Then taking that idea to a
weekday event with a broader or business focused audience.

The original idea was to hold the event as close to the release date as
possible and use the general buzz to get technical people coming to the
event. I suspect that many business people would be a little more cautious
and an event with them in mind would be less influenced by the days since
release ticking away.

Before this started I was planning in the back of my mind to do some Ubuntu
/ Linux advocacy evening talks as I have a venue that will hold them for
free. Once I have recovered from this release event I hope to get that in
motion.

Personally, I would prefer if we could do it on a Friday. The idea you
have and the opportunity to show off stuff like Ubuntu EC would be
something we would be happy to be involved with and would probably want
to invite some businesses to come along and see it in action.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] London Ubuntu install party?

2010-03-27 Thread John Stevenson
Hello all,
Thanks for all the feedback. I was planning this for the 1st May, but this
has been pointed out as the same weekend as oggcamp.

Would you all still be interested on a simultaneous London event or would
you prefer the following weekend?

I have a venue in mind which would cater for up to 100 people, has wireless
Internet connectivity and plenty of space. The venue would cost to hire, so
would either have to charge a small fee (£10-25) on entry or get some
sponsorship. Would you all still be interested if there is an entrance fee?

I have about 50 people interested in the initial idea, so am busy trying to
organise the details and check everyone is still interested. Your feedback
is much appreciated.

Thank you

An all day session may not be practical on a week day. On the other
hand, considering everything you have on the list below, I'm not sure
2-3 hours is enough.

Sounds good. Depending on the audience, you could also include subjects
such as apache, quickly, python, etc.

When talking about multimedia, maybe add a word about medibuntu and
demonstrate how to install Skype from there?

Hi there,

I hosted the bugjam in London a couple of times back and I am willing to do
it again.
I would of done something earlier but have been rushed off my feet with
work...

I am pretty sure I can provide a room or two with wireless and fixed point
internet access..
Pretty sure I can provide a box to load from scratch too with whatever demo
stuff we can come up with.

I can provide drinks and snacks and the venue is just outside of Liverpool
street.

Also, may be able to set up the video conferencing to stream out to web
too!

If you are interested, let me know.
