Re: [ubuntu-uk] Wanted: Podcast transcribers
Can I just say thank you everyone for volunteering to transcribe podcast. As a deaf man my self I do really appreciate this and I will be notifying deaf lug. The hard part is the timing and guessing whos who speaking but try not to worry about this as I am sure people will help or just put ? or unknown speaker. once its written other language translators will find it easy as they don't have to listen but read the transcript and translate it . And please dont forget to add your name at the end of it and email address (you don't have to If you don't want to) so you know how much we apracte this. Subtitles on TV does this and I know they get emails. This sort of thing was talked at LUGRadio but they gone off the idea , don't know why but I cant complain as its a free service. But anyway I thought id write and thanks to you all for comming up with this idea. Timing details can be found in the .trs file (it's some form of XML). It may need proof reading, particularly people names. Do we want HTML versions with links to actual content. For example when Mark Shuttleworth mentions Thunderbird do we want that to be a link to the Thunderbird website? I'm a programmer so I'm happy to use it but not sure if it would be a barrier to others. That said we're only talking about a couple of commands here. I've also made a start on the first 10 minutes of episode 2. I've made a focus on readability also, and ignored "um's" and false starts in hope to make it easier to read. I used the 'transcriber' application that i previously mentioned. Although it has it's limitations (spelling didn't always work as expected), i did find it a really good application for this task. One really good thing about it, you play and pause the audio with , then press + to change speaker (It did initially hide the OK button, but you can stretch the dialogue window, and it seems to remember). I think this application is also particularly useful as it also logs the timestamps of each entry, but can also export to standard plain text and mediocre html. I've added what i have done into launchpad: http://linkpot.net/guessable/ It's currently a branch under my launchpad area, and others can branch it with: $ bzr branch lp:~davewalker/ubuntu-uk-podcast/Transcripts (install bazaar if needed) If those willing to get involved think this method of working is a good solution, i'll move the source tree to an area where others can commit to. If you have any questions about using Launchpad, Bazaar (bzr) or 'transcriber' let me know - and i'll see if i can help. I have no idea who is talking most of the time. I think I can recognize Alan's voice, thanks to watching some of his screen casts. People say 'um' lots! I think it is worth dropping all these 'ums' and even the occasional comment if it does not add anything to the text. For example, during the introductions, each presenter says 'hello' after their name. I did not think that was worth having in the transcript. Audacity is quite useful. I would set the selection for a ten second repeat, and play it over and over until I had it all down. Then I would move on to the next ten seconds. This is a slow process! Hi, I transcribed most of the Ubuntu Screencasts subtitles and as a guide it took me around 4-5 hours for a 30 min video. Granted, I'm not a fast typist and each line had to be sync'ed with the video/audio properly afterwards, so I'm sure this project will be much quicker. I could probably do one. Spelling is not one of my strengths, but with aspell installed, it should be cool. Is there any particular format or layout required? You say plain text, but even then a common layout could be useful in case it is to used for other formats in the future. -- Philip Stubbs -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.org/UKTeam/ smime.p7s Description: S/MIME cryptographic signature -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.org/UKTeam/

I've done this before and 40 mins worth of several people waffling :-) takes some doing. That way people can get involved when they've just go a small amount of spare time, every now and then, without having to commit to an entire episode. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.org/UKTeam/

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Wanted: Podcast transcribers
Hi All I haven't responded to any of these before but I'd be happy to get involved with the transcribing. Not being a coder I'd still love to do my bit for the community and this sounds like a great way to go about it. From our point of view we'd love to just hand over the ogg/mp3 and let the transcribers team get on with it. > Have you any idea how many words there are in the podcast? Not a clue :) However it _is_ a relatively fixed duration of 40 mins if that helps. Sometimes we do speak a bit too quickly, and we do get people on for whom English is not their first language. I guess if there are any words that it's not easy to understand you can always ask us for confirmation or leave a known block of text like **UNKNOWN** in so we can search and replace with the right word. > I will try > transcribing a bit at the weekend and see how long it takes and then > give you an answer! > Excellent stuff. Both :) Accessibility and google juice. I don't know how many other Linux-related podcasts that there are, but I would bet not many have transcriptions, and I'm certain no other Ubuntu ones do :) So it would be a nice selling point for us too, to be the only ones catering to people with hearing difficulties. I figured that the most time consuming thing was to actually do the transcription itself, so as long as it's in a human readable format (unicode text) then we can "post process" it to add in links etc later? Do you have a better suggestion? Anyone seen what other podcasts do? I know there are pay-for services ranging from 30-40 cents USD per minute, but we thought this might be a way to get people involved with the bonus of not having to spend any money.
