[Ubuntu-US-CA] Mastodon account

2019-04-05 Thread charlie
Hey folks. This is an official announcement to let you know that the
team now has an official account on the Mastodon service. Mastodon is
like Twitter and has a lot of the same functionality. Please go to
mastodon.technology and search for Ubuntu California and follow the account.

Have a great weekend and thank you!

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu Hour

2019-03-18 Thread Charlie
Ubuntu Hour: I've had the greatest idea. I'm in Lancaster twice per week and both of those times are on campus at school with many, many students. What better way to have an Ubuntu Hour at a school? I'll need to do some preliminary scouting for the best place to do it and ask the proper questions but this is awesome. Haven't thought of this until now.I still want to do Ubuntu Hours in Apple Valley, too. So what I'll do is this: two Ubuntu Hours per week, granted my schedule allows for it. One in Lancaster and one in Apple Valley. This makes me feel very good. Upcoming days and times will be announced upon securing a location to sit down and do this. \○/Charlie LunaIRC: "carbonzero"--

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] ALERT

2019-03-08 Thread charlie

Team,

I feel that I'm in a better position now to declare my hard lockdown
ended. All security measures have been updated and if you still notice
anything odd from my social media accounts, emails, or anything, let me
know. Luckily, the laptop that was taken was encrypted and required a
login password and so that person won't have an easy time getting into
it if at all.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Yesterday's events

2019-03-08 Thread Charlie
Yesterday, I attempted to inform all of you that I was in hard lockdown after my Jeep was broken into and my backpack, which contained my laptop, homework and other items, was stolen from my vehicle at around 5:20am. I had stopped at a Starbucks near my college campus in order to get some coffee and get to campus for class. This incident happened right in front of a security camera mounted below the sign of the Sprint Store right beside the Starbucks in the same building. The Jeep got repaired but my belongings were gone for good.On that laptop was a setup using Kubuntu and Ubuntu Studio controls/packages to demonstrate how you can have Ubuntu Studio software, namely the audio production pieces, on any flavor of Ubuntu besides the default Ubuntu Studio installation. At one moment, I contemplated several things. Quitting school and backing out of SCALE.By the time I arrived at home, and it was a damn cold ride but I survived, I got word about something that brought me to my knees and cried. My fathet-in-law was buying me a brand new laptop, an amazing piece of hardware, and these heavily encouraging words and I quote:"Charlie,Jenny got with me today about what happened to you at school. I was all over the emotional spectrum. From sad, to worried, to outright mad at the person who'd do such a thing to such a good man who's doing his damndest to get ahead in a fastly changing world that needs someone like. You take care of my Jenny better than anybody I've ever seen, including me. You're a sweet, intelligent and caring young man and I can't sit here and just let you give up on your dreams. In light of that, I've taken the liberty of doing something for you to help you get back on track. I ordered a brand new laptop (*: my edit here, the specs he listed made my jaw hit the floor), for you with your favorite mouse and it'll be delivered by the time you get from SCALE. I insist on doing this for you because you mean the world to my daughter and to me and I absolutely want to help you achieve your academic and career goals. Now, another thing. I know you're rattled hard. I was told what you said to Jenny. It broke my heart. The above actions were in part for that. The other parts, I can only do in person. Call me and/or come see me when you can. I love you, son. Dad"I admit, I was speechless. My father-in-law is a good man. He's adamant about education and having a career that you love. That's why I won't let vehicular burglarly ruin my day today at SCALE. I'll be there from 14:00-18:00. I hope everyone has a family like I've got. Family who are adamant on helping others. That's the beauty of being involved with this team and the Linux community in general. We believe in helping each other learn and create. I know this has been a rather heartfelt email but I wanted to come forward with it because I believe in keeping you in the loop. Thank you for listening/reading and if you can, come to SCALE this weekend. It's my first time and I want to meet all of you. Thank you for being my friends and family and mentors on a road that's gorgeous from all views. Charlie Lunaubuntu-california.org'carbonzero' on IRC.--

I have to have my application (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Eickmeyer/DeveloperApplication) done by Friday, which means the packages awaiting sponsorship must be sponsored and Ross and/or Myself must be sponsored as well by said sponsor. If this does not happen, then there will not be a 19.04 release, which could effectively kill Ubuntu Studio as an official flavor of Ubuntu. So, please spread the word, and try to rally support to keep this effort afloat. Thanks,<

In October 2016, I wrote a mail to ask the DMB to revisit their approach to
the question of Ubuntu upload rights for Ross Gammon, in light of the fact
that this meant the difference between having or not having any uploaders on
the team of an official flavor, UbuntuStudio.

Because there has been some turnover on the DMB since then, and because I'm
adding some new cc:s here (including the TB), I'll quote my original email

I think it's important that we as a community not be overly process-bound
here. It is of course still necessary to make sure the people asking for
upload rights are trustworthy and know what they're doing, but we're talking
here about a situation where an official Ubuntu flavor has an active
community but no active members with upload rights. Fixing this should not
require multiple round trips to the DMB for them to grant gradually more
permissions over a span of months; the Ubuntu Studio package set exists to
serve the needs of the Ubuntu Studio community, and it should be
uncontroversial for the folks who are actually maintaining Ubuntu Studio to
be given access to this package set.

I am cc:ing the DMB to make sure they're aware of this situation, and to ask
them to proactively address this gap for the Ubuntu Studio team.

While this resulted in some email discussion with members of the DMB at the
time, there was apparently no formal follow-up by the DMB, and I am dismayed
to learn that two years on the situation remains unchanged and there are no
active members of the ubuntustudio team with upload rights to the Ubuntu
archive, which only came to my attention because of Erich Eickmeyer's email
this weekend to ubuntu-release:

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Hi, what can I do?

2018-12-12 Thread Charlie Luna
hello Jim! Welcome back! Allow me to introduce myself as well. My name's
Charlie Luna. I've been with the team now for almost three years and I'm
located here in Apple Valley, way south of you, near San Bernardino.

Some ways you can help are to have Ubuntu Hours, being active on the Ubuntu
California twitter and facebook accounts (I'm an admin of both accounts and you
can search for our FB page and Twitter account), hosting events such as
installfests or whatever you can dream of. We've got Scale 17x coming in March
(if memory serves me correctly), and we'll have our booth there and we'll be
having our UbuCon at the same time and I know we need volunteers to help with
the booth.

One of the ways that I'm promoting our team is by making clothing (such as the
awesome shirt I made for myself a few weeks ago with our team logo, albeit with
some of my own mods to it, and having it printed on a shirt and wearing it and
answering any and all questions about the website and team.

I mentioned above about having Ubuntu Hours. Those are fun to do and you just
dedicate an hour of your time at a location of your choice and if you go to
meetup.com, you can sign up for that service and then use our team account (I
mist admit that I haven't been able to visit our meetup account in some time)
to post your Ubuntu Hour.

Plus just hanging out on our IRC channel and talking with the crew.

An idea I've got that I'm going to be working on once I return home from Los
Angeles is to make some team-oriented stickers and a few more items to hand out
whenever and wherever I can.

If you desire a t-shirt, I can show you what I made and help you get one as
well. Just let me kno. I can also point you to the source of the graphics files
we've got stored in our launchpad account so you can take those and make
whatever you desire as well.

Other ideas for you: just about anything you can think of. There's no limit to
what you can do to help. I know we discuss each new release at our meetings and
if you like, you can pick up a copy of the latest daily build from
cdimage.ubuntu.com (be warned though, lately the images have been having issues
with the installer crashing upon startup/reboot when you're beginning the
installation process. I got told it has something to do with changes in the CSS
coding on the server and it affected some of the builds especially with the
installer (ubiquity for one since I use kubuntu, but ubiquity may be the
installer across all versions of Ubuntu anyway, I should know this by now,
whether it is or not, but I don't). If you do the QA testing, you can let us
know in our meetings how it's going for you. I know there's a page for QA to
log your testing outcomes but I can't remember the address at the moment.

Any questions, comments, suggestions, anything, let us know here on the mailing
list. I'm exited to see new people come aboard and I look forward to more
conversations with you.

Oh, I'm known as hangar18 on IRC.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Holidays

2018-12-11 Thread Charlie Luna
The end of 2018. It got delivered really quick and it brought its own gifts.

A nine (yes, 9) day long medical procedure (not me, my wife) and a wedding (my
wife's dad, my FIL) will require my full attention until the beginning of 2019.

With that, I'll be unavailable for meetings and anything else team related
until these personal matters are done and we're on the other side of them.

So with this email, I bid ALL of you a happy holiday season. Please, be safe.
Please, have fun! That's important! Most of all, be happy and joyous and spread
it!

If you do need to contact me, you can still email me and I'll try my hardest to
get back to you as soon as I can.

Can you get one like this? Absolutely. I can help you get one if you
need help or don't have the time to do it or you can pull together the
files and do something that fits your tastes with any service you
prefer. Either way, it's all worth it when you get to promote an awesome
Ubuntu Loco Team and the software itself. If you'd like my assistance,
feel free to email me personally and I'll help you all I can.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Holiday idea

2018-12-01 Thread charlie
Hey folks! I wanted to bring this up to all of you because I've been
sitting here in my office and this idea just came to me and it's amazing.

The holidays are coming. A lot of people have the means to get things
for others. A lot of people struggle to even find food for the day. With
the latter I'm more concerned about here. All of us sit here in front of
our computers reading this email. We bought the computer and put Ubuntu
on it so we could have all of the benefits of it and have some
participation in its continuing mission. To be secure, to be free, to be
fast, to be open.

Take that ability you've got and apply it to the people who're in need.
I propose this. Look around you and find a computer that you don't use
anymore. Ask yourself, does it still work? Would it work with Ubuntu? If
you said yes to both questions, AWESOME! Now, take that computer, ask
this..do you need it for anything? If yes, then ok. If no, do this instead.

Donate it to someone in need. Think about it. What better way to empower
someone than with a computer with the best operating system in the world
installed on it? Imagine handing a used laptop to a person that gives
them access to the internet, word processing and other
productivity/office software, email, games, and whatever else they need
to make their lives easier.

Imagine that homeless person who camps out down the street from you.
Imagine that person getting a laptop from you and you help them use it
and you tell them where they can get free wifi service such as a library
or coffee shop. Imagine that person being able to contact a homeless
shelter, or family, for help? Or they fill out a job application online
and they get a chance to work somewhere. Then that helps them apply for
a place to live.

Imagine what we can do by just doing that?

Sure, what they do with the laptop/desktop computer after you give it to
them is up to them. We can all hope that that person takes it and uses
it for good reasons to get them back to a healthy, happy and productive
life. But if not, that's their choice. Not ours.

So for this holiday season, I encourage you to take an older laptop or
desktop that you don't use anymore and put Ubuntu on it. Find someone
who needs computer access. Give it to them for free. Give them a chance
at a better life. With software that's always free, safe, fast and open.
We know its benefits. Give those benefits to someone who needs it.

Bless you all and I hope you consider this and follow through. I'm going
to do it. Will you?

2018-11-15 Thread charlie
Hey folks! Just a note to let you know that the daily builds of Ubuntu 19.04
'Disco Dingo' are available on cdimage.ubuntu.com for testing. This release is
an interim version (non-lts) but no details are available yet for what it
contains. But, you can get it and start testing it for QA.

Have a great weekend!

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Team tshirt design

2018-11-05 Thread Charlie
Additional comment to previous email:

The t-shirt can be in a range of colors as can the logo and wording. You don't
have to go with what's shown here, I just happen to love black and wear it a
lot so I made the prototype in those colors just to show what can be done.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Team tshirt design

2018-11-04 Thread charlie
hello fine people! Lately I've been working on a tshirt design using
artwork that was previously done by a member of our team and by using
GIMP, I was able to create a simple design with some slight
modifications to the original artwork so that it works with the color of
the first design. Several details need to be discussed here. First of
all, this shirt and any future merchandise that I can create, won't be
for profit. It's all going to be sold at cost which I think is how much
it costs for the printing service to make the merchandise and the cost
of shipping. No profits at all. I'm working with two services at the
moment to get this started and going forward, I'm hoping to be able to
go down to one and that's going to be a local printer. Custom Ink, which
is an online printing service, and a local company called Splattered
Ink, LLC., here in Apple Valley. Custom Ink offers no minimums only on
one, maybe just a couple more, categories so that's going to be very
limited in use and since everything else has a minimum amount before the
order can be placed, I'll go to the local printer and then collect
orders from the team and then when the minimum gets met, the order gets
placed.

Now, for the design, the one I'm showing here is just one of many that I
can do so if you've got a color choice you'd rather have, for the color
of the tshirt, logo and/or writing, then just let me know and I can
custom make it for you. Ubuntu Cali Tshirt
<https://www.customink.com/designs/ubuntucali/ygu0-00bf-pdq5/share?pc=EMAIL-40778&utm_campaign=shared%20design&utm_source=share%20link&utm_medium=shared%20design&utm_content=shared%20desktop>

I'm doing this so we can promote Ubuntu and the team even better than
before.

Once I get the method of payment configured, those details will go out
as well.

And don't forget to come hang out on our Twitter and Facebook accounts.
I'm a new admin for both accounts and it's been great to have that
outlet because I love promoting something this much. It's just like my
love for music and the experiences I've had in the music world. I'd like
to thank Lyz and Nathan for that opportunity and I hope I make the
entire community proud and please, please let me know if I need to
improve something. I'm all ears for CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, or negative,
I can take that, too, lol, about anything.

In closing, the community gets better with communication because a
community exists on communication. A city of people who don't talk to
one another is just a city of people living together. A city, county,
state or country becomes a community when we communicate. Let's do that.

Until next time, keep it free. Keep it secure. Keep it fast. Keep it Ubuntu.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] LA Comic Con

2018-10-24 Thread Charlie
Hey guys! I'm going to put this up on the team wiki for meeting discussion but
I wanted ask it here as well. As some of us know, if not all, the LA Comic
Con's coming this weekend. What would be the consensus for us having a booth
there to promote Ubuntu? I know we've got UbuCon at SCALE but I think this
would be a great opportunity as well. Reason I'm asking is that I'm in LA today
for familial reasons and I follow a lot of comic cons and entertainment related
things on various social media outlets and I found out about LA Comic Con and
wanted to to know what, if anything, we could do to make an appearance at it.
Let me know.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Future articles for Full Circle Magazine.

2018-10-13 Thread charlie
Hey all! I wanted to get this out to all of you about something I'm
really passionate about. As some of you may know already, I've got a
huge desire to promote not just our team, the Ubuntu California loco
team, but Ubuntu and its derivatives, as hard as I can while
contributing in whatever ways I'm able to and that includes writing
articles for a well known free magazine called Full Circle Magazine
. This independent publication's created and
published by Ronnie Tucker in the U.K. and he's been doing a phenomenal
job of reporting everything concerning Ubuntu. And the contributions of
its readers are excellent!

And now, I'm doing the same thing. Not only will I be reviewing software
and doing opinion pieces, but I'm also going to be doing personal
interviews with anyone who's involved with Ubuntu on any level. Whether
you just use it as a general user or do programming or even work as an
administrator of an IT department where Ubuntu reigns supreme.

No matter your skill level or involvement with Ubuntu, I want to
interview you. What I've got to offer is a questionnaire of some general
questions and then some more directed ones that focus on some current
events and I'm looking for any and all who want to participate in this.

But why personal interviews? One main reason. It's YOU that puts Ubuntu
on the map. It's YOU that works behind the scenes, even as a general
user who knows how to file bug reports and that's it. It's YOU who's
important and I think personal interviews of the people who use Ubuntu
on a daily basis need to be heard from.

Sure, Full Circle Magazine does offer opinion articles and reviews and
even how-to's. But, I feel there's a major need to take a look at the
individuals responsible for all of this stuff, and that's where you come
in. I want to pick your brain as much as I can for this.

Now, for the disclaimer. The questionnaire I mentioned isn't quite ready
just yet since this is the first time I've ever done anything with
journalism. It's a refreshing step outside of my circle of usual areas
of interest and I'm super happy to be adding this to my list. I'm only
doing a questionnaire type of interview because I'm very limited in
resources to travel to you to do a face-to-face interview and I know
your time's precious and I don't want to take away from that if I can
help it.

So, in closing, if you're interested in participating in this
questionnaire interviews, please let me know. You can reply to this
email or send one directly to me and when the questionnaire's finally
done, I'll inform you and if you're still interested, I'll send a copy
to you. And just so you know, anyone can contribute to it as long as
it's related to Ubuntu and its derivatives.

Talk with you soon!

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Meeting frequency

2018-08-23 Thread charlie

hey guys. I'll address each thing separately here.

Nathan:

meetings: I think having one monthly meeting's good for now since
participation has been low like you said and I've noticed it as well. I
know for myself it'll be ok since I'm about to start school in September
and I'm not really sure how busy I'm going to be but I should still be
able to have time for a monthly meeting. Per your statement about having
meetings just to have them is understandable. Maybe we should start a
new process now where we only have a meeting when there's an absolute
need in order to get a live vote or something. Just an idea. Or if
something does come up on the agenda from someone to discuss, we can do
it via the list or IRC.

I know I've got that tshirt design (with more coming) that I'm looking
to sell and take the proceeds and donate it and that's one way to get
noticed more. My head's so full of ideas and I want to run with them all
and get this Ubuntu machine humming loudly. lol

One of the biggest things I love to do is promote something I love if
I've got enough to do so. What I mean is this. If I'm educated enough
about something where I can talk about it and explain it well enough to
get some interest going, then I'm very stoked. If I've got merchandise
and materials to either sell, give away, hand out, then that's a good
thing as well and I think that's where we need to focus; the promotional
work. Just a simple sticker could even get some interest going. I know
we've got Ubuntu Hours we can do and I'm trying to get back to that.

Promotion's big to me because I've been in the world of music for a long
time and I know what it takes to get the word out about something (be it
a band, concert, festival, album, whatever) even if it means having a
free concert. But, in the world of software and Ubuntu specifically,
there should be an interest in doing Ubuntu Hours, Installfests and even
conventions of our own. Perhaps not as big as SCALE but something like
that because I see and read about Comic Cons nearly every week and I
think that might be a great way to promote Ubuntu. Like the San Diego
Comic Con which seems to be the largest of them all and if we can get a
booth there for our team, WOW!

I'm going to go call the Apple Valley city hall and inquire about the
convention center here and ask how much it'd be to rent it out for a day
or two for a mini-convention. I know that's going to be a task as big as
the universe but I'm really wanting to do something like. Maybe even
have an old-school LAN party there.

Phil:

slack: I'm not a user of that service and I'd be willing to check it out
but I'm more 'old school' and prefer IRC since I've used it since the '90s.

But let me ask this: do we have social media accounts for the team? If
not, I'd be happy handling that since I'm on the computer and my phone a
lot during the day anyway. I'd love to see us on Instagram, twitter,
google+, and (i hate to say it), facebook. maybe even MySpace.

what do you guys think of my ideas?

Hi team,

We've always operated the California LoCo with the idea that most
things
are discussed via the mailing list and online IRC meetings were

In the past few years, participation both on-list and on IRC has
dropped
precipitously.

I'd like to bring this up for discussion.  There are really two
issues
at hand.

The first, is that meetings do take time and interfere with other
plans.
Meetings haven't been well-attended for some time now, and I don't
think having meetings just to have them are very helpful. Would it
be a
good idea to reduce meetings to monthly?

Second, of course, is that participation and activity are very low.
This is a global problem across the Ubuntu Local Community Team
landscape.  But we shouldn't take it for granted, either.  If
there are
issues that need to be addressed, or improvements to be made, it's
important that I hear from you so that we can all work together to
make
things better.

Let me know if there's anything that you think we could do to help
make
the California team a more interesting thing to be involved in.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Confirmed! Microsoft Has Bought GitHub for $7.5 Billion | It's FOSS

2018-06-07 Thread Charlie
I'm against this deal. I don't like a corporate giant jumping into our open
source community and exerting its influence with money. We of the free and open
source software community need to be alarmed by this and if any of you have
code on github, I'd suggest you put it somewhere else. Linux is about being
open source and FREE and I don't want anything to do with Microsoft. Microsoft,
as you all know, is all about the money and their proprietary software that's
weak and virus/malware prone. Their closed environment philosophy is against
what we stand for. Mark my word, Microsoft WILL try to cash in on our hard work
and make it all about profit and take all the code internal and eschew open
source philosophies. If they don't, I'll eat my words.

It’s Official! Microsoft Has Bought GitHub for $7.5 Billion
Last updated June 4, 2018 By Abhishek Prakash 28 Comments
Earlier a Business Insider report suggested that GitHub is seriously
considering a $5 billion buyout from Microsoft. Bloomberg later confirmed that
the deal has been finalized and Microsoft is buying GitHub. And Microsoft has
now officially announced that it has bought GitHub for $7.5 billion.

In case you didn’t know, GitHub is the largest software developer’s community
with more than 23 million individual developers from over a million
organizations worldwide. A huge number of open source projects use GitHub for
development and for hosting their source code. Though GitHub is famous for open
source projects, it is a private limited company.

Not the first time Microsoft tries to buy GitHub

This is not the first time that Microsoft attempts to buy GitHub. Back in 2016
when GitHub was raising the second round of fundings, Microsoft saw an
opportunity for itself. GitHub denied the ‘rumors’ and Microsoft declined to
comment on it.

Two years later, Microsoft has been successful in its attempt.

GitHub complements LinkedIn

Microsoft bought job-oriented professional social network LinkedIn for a
massive $26 billion in 2015. This was one of biggest tech deals ever. And this
huge investment in LinkedIn has already started to pay off for Microsoft.

LinkedIn and GitHub complement each other. LinkedIn is the biggest social
network for professionals where job aspirants and employers hangout. GitHub is
the platform where developers can show off their work. Lately, GitHub has been
playing a crucial part in job hunting for software developers.

With GitHub in its kitty, Microsoft will surely use it in expanding and
strengthening LinkedIn.

Embrace, extend and extinguish: The evil philosophy of Microsoft in play again?

If I have to look at this Microsoft GitHub deal from the negative aspect, I’ll
recall the ‘Embrace, extend and extinguish’ strategy of Microsoft.

Two decades back, US Department of Justice found Microsoft’s ‘secret
philosophy’ of Embrace, Extend and Extinguish. More than 20 years later,
Microsoft seems to continue following the same strategy.

GitHub was the favorite place for open source developers to host their open
source projects.

Then Microsoft entered the screen screaming “Microsoft loves Open Source“.
[Embrace]

Microsoft used its army of developers to create or contribute to a number of
open source projects and thus Microsoft became one of the top contributors on
GitHub. [Extend]

And now Microsoft has bought GitHub. [Extinguish?]

Of course, this is a mere speculation and only time will tell if Microsoft is
going to bury GitHub or not.

What does it mean to you and open source projects?

Microsoft is a name that almost always creates heated arguments in open source
communities. Microsoft buying something that is so closely related to open
source is certainly going to see plenty of backlashes.

I can prophesy that some projects will move to GitHub alternative platforms
like GitLab or SourceForge. Most organizations and developers will stay with
GitHub at least for some time.

What do you think of Microsoft and GitHub deal? As Microsoft buys GitHub, will
you continue using it? What difference will this acquisition make for you?

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Hackers infect 500, 000 consumer routers all over the world with malware | Ars Technica

2018-05-23 Thread Charlie
I'm not sure if this sort of thing concerns any of you, but I just read this
and I'm heavily concerned. With this announcement, I'm gearing up to go
purchase a suitable desktop computer that I can convert into a router using
Ubuntu Server. This type of cybersecurity scares me and it now makes perfect
sense to use an unused computer to be a router and other equipment with ubuntu
as the OS. We've got the software, Ubuntu Server, and tools and knowledge to
stop this. Please do what you can to protect yourself and keep your computers
updated.

In my opinion, if a router comes off a shelf with software installed by the
manufacturer, I don't trust it. I can just as easily convert any computer into
an internet server/router on my own using Ubuntu Server and a few other pieces
of software.

In the name of computer power and security, keep it ubuntu (you choose the
distro)!

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2018/05/hackers-infect-50-consumer-routers-all-over-the-world-with-malware/

Hackers infect 500,000 consumer routers all over the world with malware
VPNFilter can survive reboots and contains destructive "kill" function.

by Dan Goodin - May 23, 2018 1:13pm PDT

Enlarge / A Linksys WRVS4400N, one of more than a dozen network devices
targeted by VPNFilter.
Linksys
Hackers possibly working for an advanced nation have infected more than 500,000
home and small-office routers around the world with malware that can be used to
collect communications, launch attacks on others, and permanently destroy the
devices with a single command, researchers at Cisco warned Wednesday.

VPNFilter—as the modular, multi-stage malware has been dubbed—works on
consumer-grade routers made by Linksys, MikroTik, Netgear, TP-Link, and on
network-attached storage devices from QNAP, Cisco researchers said in an
advisory. It’s one of the few pieces of Internet-of-things malware that can
survive a reboot. Infections in at least 54 countries have been slowly building
since at least 2016, and Cisco researchers have been monitoring them for
several months. The attacks drastically ramped up during the past three weeks,
including two major assaults on devices located in Ukraine. The spike, combined
with the advanced capabilities of the malware, prompted Cisco to release
Wednesday’s report before the research is completed.

Expansive platform serving multiple needs

“We assess with high confidence that this malware is used to create an
expansive, hard-to-attribute infrastructure that can be used to serve multiple
operational needs of the threat actor,” Cisco researcher William Largent wrote.
“Since the affected devices are legitimately owned by businesses or
individuals, malicious activity conducted from infected devices could be
mistakenly attributed to those who were actually victims of the actor. The
capabilities built into the various stages and plugins of the malware are
extremely versatile and would enable the actor to take advantage of devices in
multiple ways.”

Sniffers included with VPNFilter collect login credentials and possibly
supervisory control and data acquisition traffic. The malware also makes it
possible for the attackers to obfuscate themselves by using the devices as
nondescript points for connecting to final targets. The researchers also said
they uncovered evidence that at least some of the malware includes a command to
permanently disable the device, a capability that would allow the attackers to
disable Internet access for hundreds of thousands of people worldwide or in a
focused region, depending on a particular objective.

“In most cases, this action is unrecoverable by most victims, requiring
technical capabilities, know-how, or tools that no consumer should be expected
to have,” Cisco’s report stated. “We are deeply concerned about this
capability, and it is one of the driving reasons we have been quietly
researching this threat over the past few months.”

Cisco’s report comes five weeks after the US Department of Homeland Security,
FBI, and the UK’s National Cyber Security Center jointly warned that hackers
working on behalf of the Russian government are compromising large numbers of
routers, switches, and other network devices belonging to governments,
businesses, and critical-infrastructure providers. Cisco’s report doesn’t
explicitly name Russia, but it does say that VPNFilter contains a broken
function involving the RC4 encryption cipher that’s identical to one found in
malware known as BlackEnergy. BlackEnergy has been used in a variety of attacks
tied to the Russian government, including one in December 2016 that caused a
power outage in Ukraine.

BlackEnergy, however, is believed to have been repurposed by other attack
groups, so on its own, the code overlap isn’t proof VPNFilter was developed by
the Russian government. Wednesday’s report provided no further attribution to
the attackers other than to say they used the IP address 46.151.20

[Ubuntu-US-CA] update

2018-05-20 Thread charlie
hey folks, i just wanted to let you know that i'm changing my username
from metalbiker to talos7. reason: two parts. one, i just felt some
change needed to happen. two, talos is an excellent game available from
steam and it deals with philosophy and other elements in a high tech
version of an ancient greece-like location. very cool stuff. the 7 is
for my 7 string guitar. and it sounds like a really cool planet, galaxy,
star, guitar, etc. so yeah, there's that.

i also made a decision to acquire another computer for my home server so
that i can keep my current desktop for my recording rig so i can't do
the ubuntu server write up for that just yet.

ubuntu touch: eh, haven't played with my phone lately. been too occupied
with other things. i'm not going to do anything with it until after i'm
back in school. but by that time, the librem 5 phone from purism should
be released and i'll pick that up for sure.

i'm gearing up to do ubuntu hours again. finally. the last few months
have been crazy busy. but, i'll let you know the day and time i'll be
able to do that and i should have a better idea after next weekend.

and here's something i'd like for everyone to think about: Hawaii's
having a terrible time lately and I'm sure all of you know about it by
now. I bring it up because we've got a LOCO team out there and they
could use our positive thoughts and maybe even some help of some kind
and as well as the civilians who aren't part of the team. Everybody out
there needs help. i'm going to see if i can get an agenda item listed to
discuss tonight at our meeting.

talk with you soon.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] weird emojis in thunderbird

2018-05-07 Thread Charlie
arnold,

have you tried restarting your router/modem? if it's showing your network but
not displaying the icon for being connected, it's at least detecting your
network so i don't think it's a driver issue, unless i'm wrong.

you could also try connecting to your router/modem by ethernet cable to see how
that works. if that connects with no issue, then i'd say it's the wifi signal
where it may not be strong enough to reach your laptop. have you tried sitting
closet to your wifi ap?

usually a modem/router restart helps. you could do it either by unplugging
everything and giving it like 60 seconds to make sure everything has drained of
stored energy and then reconnecting everything.

if you know how, you could also get into the router by way of its IP address.
usually that's 192.168.1.1 but it may be different for you but that's generally
the default IP address for most routers. you just put that in the address bar
and enter. the username and password are usually on a label on the router
itself.

hopefully all of this helps.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] weird emojis in thunderbird

2018-05-07 Thread Charlie
has anybody has issues with large emojis such has hearts showing up in
thunderbird? i just installed ubuntu desktop 18.04 to have a look at it after
using kubuntu 18.04 for a while now, and when i open thunderbird, there's large
heart icons overlaying the text of my emails. so weird. and what's also weird
is that this very issue has been there ever since ubuntu 18.04 was released as
a daily build back last year. at the time, i was testing this new version of
gnome and the problem persisted even after several updates and even reinstalls
of new daily builds. i can't remember if i filed a bug for this and i'm going
to do it again and go back to kubuntu 18.04 since i've had much better luck
with graphical stability. and no weird hearts floating around. it feels like my
email's sending me love notes or something. lmao like it's saying 'show me some
love!' yeah, i'll show you love when i delete you, you wretched emails! lol so,
i'm heading back to kubuntu 18.04 after i file a new bug.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Personal recording studio

2018-04-04 Thread charlie
hey guys! it's me once again and this time I'm reporting on one of my
other Ubuntu projects. This one's my very own recording studio.

For those of you who may know me a little more, I'm a musician and a
biker. One of my long time dreams was to finally have my own recording
studio so I could pick up my guitar, put some songs together, do the
whole process of engineering, recording, producing, editing, mastering
and releasing it out into the world.

That dream's one step closer. I picked up a very valuable piece of
hardware today that puts me closer to having this recording studio. What
I got was a Dell Precision T1600 desktop tower with the Intel Xeon
processor and I believe it's a quad core unit with up to 32 GBs of RAM
and I can put a high end graphics card inside of it as well. Now I need
to find the M-Audio Delta 1010 audio interface, purchase a Shure SM-57
microphone and all of my guitar gear.

Why am I telling you this? I'm doing this to show the world that you
don't have to spend millions of dollars on equipment and software to
record music. This tower cost me a whopping $35! I was thrilled to get
this. And another reason I'm talking about this is that I've been a long
time user of Ubuntu Studio and I want to record an album using that and
show everyone that a professional recording can be done on FREE, OPEN
SOURCE SOFTWARE! I majored in Music and Audio Engineering back in the
90s and this is that dream coming true.

And to keep the mailing list from piling up with my emails about the
whole process, I'll put the whole process up on my personal site if I
can manage to get that finished up.

So this is Ubuntu project #2 for me. #1 was getting my LG Nexus 5
running Ubuntu Touch, and that's done and waiting for the write up and
now, #2's underway. Stay tuned!

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu Touch and more

2018-04-01 Thread charlie
Hey guys, I wanted to update you some more about my adventures in
flashing my LG Nexus 5 over to Ubuntu Touch. I've gone through the
flashing process (yes, I was suppose to include a complete walk-through
on my personal website and I'm still working on that), and it was easy.
Took about 20 minutes to get through it and man, the interface is really
nice. It uses Unity as the GUI and that's ok with me. There's some
growing pains here. Many of the apps I relied on while using my iPhone
are not available on Touch but, that's ok. We've got an SDK, the Ubuntu
SDK IDE, to start making those apps, granted I can get permission from
each company to make the app for Touch if someone's not doing it already.

So, I installed the Ubuntu SDK IDE to get into app making since I'm
going to be enrolling in school this fall to finish out my bachelor's
degree and I thought this would be perfect to do along side my school
work for my computer science major. And not to mention learning some
great software to develop some badass video games for 'buntu.

One thing I want to mention, Plasma Mobile's available to use for your
smartphone and Purism is delivering on their Libre 5 phone in January of
2019 since they blew past their funding goal with change to spare. Go
pre-order one of those bad boys for $599. I'm about to. It uses pureOS
as it's operating system and that even looks good on their own laptops.
I think it uses the Gnome desktop with the Wayland server.

So, my daily driver is up and running and I'm loving it so far. it's at
least taking care of my basics needs.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] some personal announcements

2018-03-25 Thread charlie
many of you have probably heard of Ubuntu Touch OS. the operating system
for smartphones and with just a couple of dedicated phones such as the
BQ E4.5 and 5.0. and the Meizu model. sadly, they vanished. but, the OS,
the zeros and ones that control the phone, is STILL with us! it was
picked up by UBPorts and has three, 3, successful ports living on the
OnePlus phone, the Fairfone 2 and my personal favorite and my daily
driver cellphone, the LG Nexus 5.

UBPorts has been doing an amazing job building a community of adopters,
developers, contributors and testers ever since they started handling
the progression of the software. Several apps exist but more official
apps from the likes of Starbucks, CVS and many others need to be brought
over to it.

in light of that, I decided to start acquiring the software necessary to
develop apps such as Ubuntu SDK, GIMP, QT Creator and more with some
hopeful collaborations between myself and individuals and companies
needing apps.

wrapping up, get ready for news about my new website where I'll be
documenting more about my road testing of this software and more
projects in the works.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] proposal to change meeting time

2018-03-20 Thread Charlie
i'm wanting to get some feedback on this to see what the consensus is.

my issue is that i miss a lot of meetings due to my work hours and schedule and
i really do miss participating. i'd like to propose the time be changed to an
earlier time in the day, say 3pm? i know a lot of us are probably busy at that
time but this time change would help me be there.

i joined the group to participate and learn and, currently, my work's getting
in the way of that.

so if we could bring this to a vote, for either a yes or no, that'd be great.
if the time remains the same, so be it. i'll make do and just alter my schedule
accordingly so i can be there. thanks!

[Ubuntu-US-CA] happy holidays!

2017-11-24 Thread charlie
hey folks! this email is totally non-ubuntu related but you're my team
and I wanted to say hi and happy holidays. i hope 2018 is a great year
for everyone and we can, hopefully, close out 2017 on a good note. Which
we can, actually. Daily builds of ubuntu 18.04 LTS already available on

With that, be safe, have fun, enjoy yourselves with your family or
alone. Talk with you soon!

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu Hour Apple Valley

2017-08-19 Thread charlie
hey guys! Ubuntu Hour Apple Valley has finally kicked off but I got here
a bit late and I still need to keep my end time @ 15:00 PDT. Next time I
get to do this, I'll make sure to be on time but I came straight here
after an appointment that ran late but come by. I'm at Starbucks, 12218
Apple Valley Road, Apple Valley, CA 92308. I'll post any pics I've got
when I get a chance to do so! I'm considering an IRC channel for this so
I can do a live IRC chat when I do this so if there's anything I need to
do for that, such as not having the channel on a certain server such as
freenode (where our ubuntu channels reside) or if I should have that
specific channel on that server, please let me know. I want to engage as
many people as possible with this and I need some feedback.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu Hour Apple Valley

2017-08-09 Thread charlie
Hey guys! If you remember, I wasn't able to get my first Ubuntu Hour off
the ground a couple weeks ago due to a family illness. Luckily, that's
not an issue now and everything is a green light for a new meeting. So,
here's the skinny on what you need to know:

Date: 2017/08/19

Time: 14:00 PDT

Location: Starbucks, 12218 Apple Valley Road, Suite A, Apple Valley, 92308.

This cool location is not hard to miss because it sits on the corner of
the building and overlooks the intersection of Apple Valley Road and
Bear Valley Road. It's right across the street from Del Taco and Lowes
on the west side of the street and across the street from Nubi Yogurt,
Gamestop, Jess Ranch shopping area, etc.

Please head over to our team wiki, team meetup page or use this email as
a way to register for the event.

Those of you who know someone who might be interested in coming along,
invite them, please! And remember to have them bring a laptop and/or a
USB flashdrive and/or a blank DVD+-R/RW so they can at least take a copy
of the .iso home to try out. I'll be showing off Ubuntu 17.10 since I'm
testing it as reporting bugs as they come up but I'll do what I can for
all of you.

See you then!

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu Hour Apple Valley

2017-07-29 Thread charlie
hey folks! I'm saddened to say that my Ubuntu Hour today has to be
canceled and rescheduled for another time. An unforeseen illness in my
family is keeping me grounded today and I'll keep everyone updated about
the next time I'm able to do an Ubuntu Hour.

I'm very sorry about any inconveniences this may have caused if you were
planning to come.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] 2017 Election and Ubuntu Hour Apple Valley

2017-07-24 Thread charlie
Hey everyone!! First of all, I'd love to say this to Nathan Haines:
Congratulations on winning the vote! You're absolutely the better
candidate between the two of us and it was a pleasure to put my name in
the hat for this and I'm very happy you secured the position. Your
knowledge and experience are exemplary and I'm very proud to be under
your leadership. A round of applause and celebatory party is in order
for you if we get the chance to do so for you!

I'm also very proud to announce that I'm hosting my very first Ubuntu
Hour meeting this Saturday, July 29, 2017 at the Starbucks located at
12218 Apple Valley Road, Suite A, Apple Valley. It's located across the
street from Stater Bros, Del Taco and Lowe's but if you've got GPS,
you'll be able to find it if you don't know where it's at. It starts at
14:00 PDT and ends at 15:00 PDT. Perhaps in the future I can bring some
swag if I can get my hands on some to give to any attendees.

This information is also located on our team wiki and meetup.com and if
you've got any questions, please feel free to contact me about it here
or our other communications channels.

I hope to see anyone there!!

[Ubuntu-US-CA] 2017 Election for Leadership

2017-07-09 Thread charlie
Hello all!! My name is Charlie Luna. I’m running in the election for a
leadership position and I feel that I’m a great candidate to take on
that role because of my following experience and ideas:

I come from a long history of working in manufacturing and being part
of teams and contributing to our goals. At my former employer, SMC
Corporation in Indiana, I sat on two committees in charge of creating a
new floor plan to increase productivity through better work-flow of the
product to reducing the amount of errors in the production of the
various parts. Both agendas had goals and those goals were met 100%.

Leadership is something I grew up around with people who took the lead
when it was asked of them to do so or when they saw they needed to step
up to that plate to do it. No, it’s not genetic, but I feel at times
that I need and want to step up to that role to get things moving
towards a goal and perhaps present some ideas that get implemented like
some of my ideas were when I was sitting on the aforementioned
committees. I love being challenged and I love being part of a team.
And most of all, I love the Ubuntu Linux operating system.

My father was the Fire Chief of my hometown’s Fire Department for over
15 years.
My stepbrother has been my hometown’s Chief of Police for nearly 30
years.
My mother is a business manager for a large company.
My uncle is a Lieutenant in the National Guard.
For myself, I was the Team Lead and Head Technical Officer for a
paranormal research group.

My Associate’s Degree is in Manufacturing and Industrial Technologies
with the focus on CNC setup, programming and operation. I began a quest
to find a Linux system for this industry even at that time.

I came across Ubuntu desktop over 10 years ago and when I found it, I
immediately made it the ONLY operating system I used and I’ve been in
love with it ever since and I’ve never regretted it.

My favorite OS is by far Ubuntu Gnome and I’m very happy to see that
Ubuntu Desktop is changing back to it, even though I did like the Unity
interface. After switching to Gnome, I found that this is by far THE
epitome of an operating system and I know the merge between the two is
going to be phenomenal!

Now, for my ideas, they churn perpetually like the great, wide, blue
ocean! One of my biggest pet projects is promotion. This project is two
fold in nature. Side one involves promoting Ubuntu, the operating
system, hard and heavy. How do we do this? Ubuntu Hours. Local
conventions. Getting promotional materials from Sharebuntu and hand
them out! Create installation parties at your house or in a local
establishment. Create swag packages and take them to businesses and
give them out. Or simply, just wear a t-shirt with the ubuntu logo
printed on it or one of the mascots. And there’s more!

The other side, promote our team! We’ve got to view ourselves like a
sports team and put our information in front of as many people as
possible. Those team members become walking and talking billboard
signs. They glow with enthusiasm like the bright, neon lights that pump
out a psychedelic palette of colors that dazzle our eyes.

All of this comes down to one thing: I want to be in a role of
leadership for you, our team and for Ubuntu. But why? I know that our
team needs to be re-energized and I bring an enthusiastic,
knowledgeable and youthful desire to reinvigorate our passion for this
cause. To further spread the benefits of open source software and give
this world a real chance to have an industrial strength operating
system that increases safety and speed along with being absolutely
free! I'm a leader that this team desperately needs.

Please vote for me on election day.

Charlie Luna. Candidate for the 2017 Leadership Election.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] more t-shirts?

2017-05-17 Thread charlie
I'm about to coordinate with the City of Apple Valley to see what it'd
take to rent out the conference center for some Ubuntu Hours for each
month and maybe see if I can get some local businesses, such as some
local computer shops, to maybe help with it or maybe even donate some
stuff to the effort, maybe turn it into some kind of convention for us
Ubuntu users so that we can teach and discuss all things Linux.

My recent job hunting efforts have put me back to square one since I've
been looking for new work after I recovered from shoulder surgery and
now that I've got a bit more time on my hands, why not make it productive?

I'm interested in perhaps making some custom t-shirts for it or
something to really get the interest going and then push for membership
into our LoCo group since it'd be awesome to see our numbers grow.

any feedback is welcome! thanks!

[Ubuntu-US-CA] success!

2017-05-14 Thread Charlie Luna
Luke, I somehow lost the previous email where we were conversing about my
issues with the wifi.

After a thorough investigation and plenty of testing and tinkering, I got my
issue resolved.

Per your previous comment about distance issues with 802.11ac, I concur with
that statement. But, fortunately, I'm having much better success now after I
switched between the 2 bands to test them both.

I reinstalled ubuntu and made the investigation and everything is working way
better.

I had known about the other SSID since getting the new router and it slipped my
mind until you mentioned it and I appreciate you bringin that to my attention
again.

Now if anything happens to the 5G channel, such as connection issues, I can
switch over to the 2G channel and use it just fine, until the 5G band decides
to cooperate. lol

Thank you for your help and at least now I've got this amazing laptop blazing
fast on the appropriate channel.

everything seems to be working pretty good now. i've reinstalled
everything and switched between the 2 SSIDs and everything works far
better than it used to. Not sure what I did but whatever it was, I'm
super thankful that it's working great! I appreciate you waking up my
mind to this. It helped me a lot.

You may want to look at the router setup to see if you can split the
two bands apart. If not maybe someone here knows how to force your
card to pick one band over another.

yes, you're correct. And honestly, I knew that already and I don't know
why I didn't think of that before. I can log into that other SSID and
use it but I haven't tried it yet. Been away from my laptop for other
matters.

But right now, ac is working decently but I'm going to change over to
the other SSID for a baseline test and maybe get a better idea of what's
going on.
