Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Hello there!
Well, the important thing is making sure that those contributions are listed on your wiki page. If you like documentation, but want an easier route, there's always the wiki! https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DocumentationTeam (they handle official docs, too) I know a couple homebrewers in the area, and I'd be happy to introduce if you show up ☺ On Thu, Mar 12, 2015 at 10:42 PM, Che Dean wrote: > If you check the credits of the 12.04 version of the Manual you'll see my > name under Authors: > http://files.ubuntu-manual.org/manuals/getting-started-with-ubuntu/12.04/en_US/screen/Getting%20Started%20with%20Ubuntu%2012.04.pdf > I left the team because I didn't have time to contribute when I was moving > from Ireland to Oregon. Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Hello Everyone
Well, welcome to you both! I think you're the first married couple we have on here? Someone prove me wrong! I have my suspicions that SteamOS will be pulled into becoming more of a "desktop" in the same way that, e.g. the Xbox has. Since it's so easy to plug a keyboard into thanks to the Linux kernel… ☺ You can find information on membership here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Membership The first step is making a wiki page for yourself. Let me know if you need help with that or any other step in the process. I would be happy to facilitate your membership. Ultimately, that is one of our goals as a LoCo *AHEM NON-MEMBERS* ☺ Regarding the manual, it doesn't seem you're a member of the team or registered to the list? I'm sure there's more work to do: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-manual Either way, make sure to document and provide links to your contributions on your wiki! If you wanted to something else, there's always a need for manual testing. With KDE 5, LXQt, Unity8, Mir, and systemd all hitting us at once, there's a lot of work to double check! You can find out about the subject here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Roles/Tester#Manual_Testing I should also point out each team (e.g. Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.) has their own team as well. Regarding in person sort of things, we could always use as much help as possible at Linux Fest Northwest. The more of us that are there, the less of time commitment so we can all enjoy the festivities more together ☺ Even if you don't wish to do that, just meeting in person is a great way to learn about each other and find new ways to contribute. So, please come! http://linuxfestnorthwest.org/2015 OSCON is in the farther future. As for Eugene, yes, come on down! It's not too far away. There is a LUG at OSU, which I hope you already know (it's linked off the Eugene LUG page), but it's nice to hang with your neighbors ☺ You can find out about us here: http://euglug.org/ You'll notice we have monthly presentations. You're more than welcome to do a presentation, as I suggested before. I did one on music in Linux a while back. Again, welcome, and stay in touch! [Ubuntu Oregon] Hello there!
My name is Linda, though I usually respond to S0rceress0 online. I live in Corvallis, Oregon with my husband Che (Kereltis). I am first generation American being born in So California. I have done many many types of work from menial jobs to professional. My most notable positions were as a Soux Chef for The Velvet Turtle, a firefighter for the California Conservation Corps and a Gunners Mate in the U.S. Navy.I much prefer my life now as a writer and researcher. I got into Linux partially as a desperation measure. I was familiar with the concept of Linux, and worked on Unix machines as a teenager, but I still had windows machines until my Dell XPS started displaying symptoms of motherboard failure from overheating. Installing Ubuntu 10.10 saved it from certain doom. At that time I was unable to watch only a few shows here and there online. I found that technology moved rapidly from then on and before long I was able to use Netflix. I continued to use Windows 7 on my desktop computer, though I found I used it only for gaming and for watching an occasional movie that Netflix did not have. Using Linux, whichever distro I happened to appreciate at the moment, became so fluid and easy I swore than when I could watch shows and game one major MMO, I would switch to Linux permanently. When Netflix became native, and World of Warcraft installed easily on Ubuntu 14.04, I decided that the conditions had been fulfilled. I will never use Windows again. In several of my college courses I also convinced several other people to give Linux a serious shot through a series of tough college essays on UEFI and open source benefits. I would still classify myself as a joat. I know a little of several programming languages, and enough knowledge in Linux to feel competent with a generous amount of terminal commands. I cannot call myself an expert in any single area, but I do continue to learn. My newest interest is the Ubuntu Phone. I am fascinated by the thought of creating for it. I am a pretty big geek gurl, I love games and Star Trek is almost a biblical archway for me. (Hate those continuity errors though!) I write like there is no tomorrow, and though I am religious, my religion is tempered by the knowledge that anything in that religion could be answered at any time by science, and I am more than willing to give way to it. I cook gourmet food, I brew beer, and I really REALLY love good whiskey. I am looking forward to a time when every single person on the planet has access to education when ever they so please, and I think Linux will help us get there. -- Ubuntu-us-or mailing list Ubuntu-us-or@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-us-or
Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Hello Everyone
Welcome, and thanks for contribution to the "unofficial Ubuntu Manual project," which is a valuable necessity for us all. - thank you much. As you may already know, there are two meeting locations near your location of Corvallis; Eugene, and Salem. Plus as Walter pointed out, they’re lots of Ubuntu things happening. Hopefully we'll have the opportunity to meet at one of the events, as I'm not on IRC much. Myself - I'm a hardware engineer who likes to build electronic gadgets, then program them using C/C++ to do my bidding. ;-) Ciao for now Phil. Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Hello Everyone
I don't think Che is getting any messages from the list, though I have seen him go through the process of joining. I received a confirmation email, he did not. He is, however, on IRC. Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Hello Everyone
Welcome! You get to Eugene much? We've had a few visitors to our LUG. I would mind a talk on Linux gaming from someone in the know. Have you built a Steam box with the beta yet? We have monthly talks first Tuesday. There are also regular meetings meant as support sessions but that's mostly people hanging out. I'll let those folks most acquainted with what's going on in their community perk up if you get anywhere else. In LoCo news, we'll have a booth at Linux Fest Northwest at the end of April. It's free to get in. A couple of us are taking the train up if you want to join in the fun. If you're thinking of helping out in other areas, I could certainly point you in a couple directions. For one thing, your experience with virtual machines would be ideal for manual testing. We just had a session on that and bug triage at our recent Ubuntu Global Jam. I've been a bit slow to get slides and pics and a blog post up, but that may be of help. Have you considered your Ubuntu membership? I'm sure based on your contribution to the manual alone, you'd be eligible. Are you still contributing? @wxl Lubuntu Release Manager, Head of QA Ubuntu PPC Point of Contact Ubuntu Oregon Team Leader Eugene Unix & GNU/Linux User Group Co-organizer On Mar 12, 2015 6:55 PM, "Che Dean" wrote: > Hi guys, > > My real name is Che Dean, yes, Che is my real name, I get asked this a > lot. Che -- http://www.flickr.com/photos/chedean/ Welcome!!! I am a gamer myself, well not so much anymore due to the lack of time lol. We are in the "process" of expanding this group with more folks (again that darn time thing) but, the people we have are wonderful and I will see you around! [Ubuntu Oregon] Hello Everyone
Hi guys, My real name is Che Dean, yes, Che is my real name, I get asked this a lot. I was named after Ernesto "*Che*" Guevara, my Mum saw a picture of him on the cover of Time Magazine when she was pregnant with me. She liked the look of him and so decided to name me after him. You might have seen me around the IRC channels as Kereltis. That's what I normally use in IRC, gaming, etc. I'm delighted to finally be a member of Ubuntu Oregon, it's something I should have done a long time ago. Thanks to Mark Dude for giving me the kick into the door I needed. My epic Linux journey started when a friend of mine from Chicago introduced me to OpenSUSE (KDE). I liked it but at the time I was big into retro gaming and found, being the noob that I was, that I could install the various emulators a lot easier on Ubuntu. I also fell head over heals for the cube desktop and who could forget the wobbly windows. That was the beginning. I'm not a coder myself but I like to help out where ever I can. My main skills are building PCs of various different shapes and sizes and of course maintaining and upgrading them.
