[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486214] [NEW] Jockey fails to install nvidia on multiple kernels

2009-11-21 Thread Nicolas Joyard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-185-kernel-source

Using kernels 2.6.31-15-generic and 2.6.31-9-rt.

When installing nvidia using jockey on the -generic kernel, it installs
only for the currently running kernel. When booting the other kernel,
starting X fails with an nvidia module not found error. You have to
manually run dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-XXX-kernel-source to have it
properly installed on the other kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485492] Re: Multimedia keys do not send KeyRelease when released (Karmic)

2009-11-21 Thread Alex
Update:
Tested the solution from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8341194
not satisfying. Vol+/- keys do not cause notify-osd to do wild flickering
anymore but multiple key presses (raise/lower volume by 2 or more steps) are
not possible anymore.

Maybe the problem is not the xserver?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486253] [NEW] evdev driver (still) kills arrow keys

2009-11-21 Thread sergio.callegari
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

Once there was a known bug on xorg-input-evdev causing the keybord arrow
keys to be mapped to wrong keysims, for instance top arrow to print
screen, bottom arrow to multi key, ecc.

This is documented in
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg_input_hotplugging#Using_the_evdev_driver_kills_my_arrow_keys.2C_printscreen_is_triggered_instead

In principle, that bug should have been fixed with xorg-input-evdev
2.1.0, hence ubuntu karmic should be free from it.

Unfortunately this is not (completely) the case. When my machine is
hibernated and restarted from hibernation, I frequently have my arrow
keys mismapped.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480117] Re: i can't see the people skin very well

2009-11-21 Thread madbiologist
This is almost certainly a video driver problem. I had the same problem
many years ago when using Netscape Navigator (!) to watch Flash videos
on OS/2 Warp 4. Skin was always blue. Skin in still images was the
correct colour. Upgrading to a newer video driver solved the problem.

NVIDIA has recently released the first official release in the 190.xx
Linux driver series, 190.42. You may want to try this and see if it
fixes the problem. More info and download links for both 64-bit Linux
and 32-bit Linux can be found at

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 482875] Re: Since upgrade from jaunty to karmic, one of two thin clients' login broken.

2009-11-21 Thread Jon Coldewey
I'm not sure this is an issue with the openchrome driver. I copied the
openchrome driver from jaunty ltsp to the karmic ltsp, well expecting it
wouldn't work at all, because it was compiled for a different kernel.
But the system boots up and shows the same fault symptoms as with the
current and upstream openchrome video drivers, Xorg.7.log attached.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 351186 ***

I had the same problem, ATI 3450.
I installed the proposed patch, computer hangs upon reboot. SysReq keys won't
work , hard reboot needed. So I logged in in recovery mode and reinstalled xorg
without the ppa. Then I switched back to radeon driver and it worked. Wanted to
go back to ATI driver (ubuntu version) but X fails to start after reboot...

2009-11-21 Thread Sidney Li
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 325169 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/325169

The problem appears to be fixed in Karmic (at least it works for me),
but there have been reports of other problems with Karmic. YMMV. In
the meanwhile, someone has suggested adding these lines to the
/etc/X11/xorg.conf configuration file, in the Device section (mine
looks like this):

Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver intel
Option AccelMethod uxa
Option EXAOptimizeMigration true
Option MigrationHeuristicgreedy
EndSection

(It's been a while so I don't know who to attribute this to). This
might or might not work for you. Good luck!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486299] [NEW] MSI Wind screen flickers after startup after upgading to 9.10

2009-11-21 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Since I upgraded to Karmic Koala, my MSI Wind laptop screen keeps
flickering after startup. There's a brightness slider in the top right,
so I suppose it's trying to adjust the brightness of the screen and it
can't decide between 80% or 90% so it keeps changing between the two.
This lasts for a couple of minutes, then it stops flickering.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461863] Re: Karmic regresion: Huge fonts with KMS

2009-11-21 Thread Sveinung Kvilhaugsvik
Added bug to xorg-server since it's fixed there upstreams:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=19f7c15e2008dab3c46ba3e14dfa353d01c74f72
According to a comment in the upstream bugreport it requires a newer
version of xorg-server to work.

The work around patch to xf86-video-intel in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24482 fixes the issue in
the version of xf86-video-intel in Karmic (at least for me). Don't know
if it should be applied to the Ubuntu version of xf86-video-intel or
not.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485492] Re: Multimedia keys do not send KeyRelease when released (Karmic)

2009-11-21 Thread Alex
Ok, after hours i solved it by my own:
Connected my other Keyboard (logitech wireless): Logitech Multimediakeys
worked, Cherry got stuck.
Disconnected cherry and connected it to another USB-Port: Cherry keys work.
Reconnected Cherry to old Port: Cherry keys work.

I guess the problem occured after booting windows a couple of days ago.
Keyboard didn't work for a about minute after booting.

I just booted windows again and then back to ubuntu, but the bug did not
reappear.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383181] Re: Fujitsu T4215 Stylus not working in 9.04/9.10

2009-11-21 Thread Mark Stosberg
I report what may be the same bug.

I'll run these two commands:

sudo hal-set-property --udi
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pnp_WACf004_serial_platform_0 --key info.product
--string stylus
sudo hal-set-property --udi
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pnp_WACf004_serial_platform_0_subdev --key
info.product --string eraser

And then:

xsetwacom list

I expect to see both stylus and eraser listed, but I only see
eraser. In my case, the stylus does work initially, but when I rotate
the tablet, the orientation of the stylus does not follow the screen
rotation.

Those patches for X.org were dropped because their changes are already
included in Karmic's xserver (version 1.6.4).

Are you only seeing that notification or can you also reproduce the
problem?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 458545] Re: Cairo/Gdk shapes not visible on Intel gpu since Karmic

2009-11-21 Thread Kevin Mehall
This also affects the graphs on the overview window of Hamster-applet -
see bug #451916

I tried some testing with the xorg-edgers packages to isolate this. The fix is
in the xserver-xorg-video-intel package, upgrading it alone and leaving the
rest of the Xorg stack with the default Karmic version fixes the problem.

The fix is present in the oldest version still available in the PPA
(2:2.9.0+git20091026.10946118-0ubuntu0tormod), and if someone can tell
me where to get older packages, I can find an exact version if that
would be helpful. I do know that it was likely fixed in the PPA sometime
in October. Grepping through the apt logs from my old jaunty install
shows that 2:2.9.0~git20091010.8b2d2ff0 was installed at some point, but
I can't 100% confirm it was broken on that version.

Hopefully someone on the Ubuntu-X team can find and backport a fix to
this issue.

Those looking for an immediate solution can install an xserver-xorg-
video-intel .deb from https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
edgers/+archive/ppa/+packages?field.name_filter=video-
intelfield.status_filter=publishedfield.series_filter=karmic

Let me know if there is any additional information I can provide.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 481430] Re: xorg crash, and crash report is 'damaged'

2009-11-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks, unfortunately if apport can't generate a proper report from the
crash file, we can usually not sort it out either. If you can identify
the steps to reproduce the issue and collect a full backtrace manually,
you could reopen and we could investigate - see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for details.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 442629] Re: Touchpad too much sensitive after upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic

2009-11-21 Thread molecule-eye
I've also noticed increased touchpad sensitivity after a clean install
of Karmic over previous releases. I'm using a Gateway NX100X. The cursor
doesn't go crazy but sensitivity is noticeably higher, even when set to
its lowest setting.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 469239] Re: Catalyst Control Centre Crashes when started.

2009-11-21 Thread Peter Cordes
Is the fglrx kernel module loaded properly? Your Xorg.0.log shows that
you are using the fglrx driver, but the 3D part of it failed to
initialize.

[code]
(WW) fglrx(0): ***
(WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed! *
(WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available*
(WW) fglrx(0): * *
[/code]

It is always a bug when a program exits with an assertion failure, so it ought
to be fixed by ATI. You can probably get things working on your system by
making sure the drivers are installed properly. e.g.
install the fglrx packages and then reboot, to make sure the fglrx kernel
module is loaded.

The .deb packages have a problem on amd64
(http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1695), although it doesn't affect
32-bit systems like yours.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486486] [NEW] OpenGL broken for amd64 (packaging problem)

2009-11-21 Thread Peter Cordes
Public bug reported:

There seems to be a packaging bug in Catalyst that bites Ubuntu 9.10.

I previously added comments to bug 464525, but ATI's Felix Kuehling
thinks that's actually a separate bug. I also reported this to ATI
already: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1695, where Felix got me
to try the --install method of installing the drivers, which worked.
(Thanks.)

So I'm filing this new bug; I hope the tags I selected are ok.

On an AMD64 Karmic system, fglrx installs and works fine (2D desktop, and Xv),
but OpenGL doesn't work:
pe...@tesla:~$ fglrxinfo -v
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual!

Visual ID: 23 depth=24 class=TrueColor
bufferSize=4096 level=0 renderType=ci doubleBuffer=0 stereo=1258649631
rgba: redSize=684153483 greenSize=0 blueSize=1258649631 alphaSize=0
auxBuffers=0 depthSize=694153503 stencilSize=0
accum: redSize=1258649631 greenSize=0 blueSize=694153503 alphaSize=0
multiSample=0  multiSampleBuffers=0
Opaque.
...(same garbage values in all the other visuals)

32bit processes have no problem, e.g. nexuiz-linux-686-glx runs just
fine. But any 64bit process won't find any usable Visuals, and fail.

Installing Catalyst 9.11 with sudo ati-driver-
installer-9-11-x86.x86_64.run --install produces a fully working setup.
64bit processes work just as well as 32bit. The packages built by ati-
driver-installer-9-11-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/karmic have the
amd64 problem, the same as Catalyst 9.10, and the fglrx-installer
2:8.660-0ubuntu4 packages shipped in Ubuntu 9.10.

So, Ubuntu's currently-shipping fglrx is broken on AMD64, except for
running i386 programs (including wine, BTW).

For more details and my xorg.0.log, see
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1695

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477972] Re: [i855] Karmic / i855GM / Fujistu Siemens Amilo M7400 : Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855

2009-11-21 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
I have a theory as for why acpi=off works, but not nomodeset or DRI
off. As far as I remember, the xorg.conf option DRI off is
ignored when KMS is used (cf. comment # 6, DRI is responsible for KMS,
so it does not make sense to turn it off). So what acpi=off does is
probably to disable DRI, and therefore also disable KMS. If this
theory is right, using the kernel option nomodeset AND having Option
DRI off in xorg.conf will stop the freezes.

Could you check if this is the case? To understand better what is
happening with acpi=off, it would be nice to have /var/log/Xorg.0.log
for both the case acpi=off (without xorg.conf) and the case nomodeset
with Option DRI off in xorg.conf.

 i don't try because ignoreby drivers version 2.8 :
Option AccelMethod xxx - Try XAA, EXA (ignored on -intel 2.8.0)
Option Accel Off - turns off the 2D acceleration (ignored on -intel
except for i810 and i815 chipsets)

Yes, I added those comments recently so that people with intel
wouldn't try those options to no avail. I guess I should also add that
the DRI option is ignored when KMS is used once we have verified that.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486502] [NEW] [fglrx karmic] Black screen and no response after starting X (Radeon HD3870)

2009-11-21 Thread Maciek Sujkowski
Public bug reported:

I have a problem with fglrx driver since Catalyst 9.9.
After installation and reboot I get only black screen when X tries to start and
keyboard doesn't work however when I press power button then the system shuts
down properly after a while.
I have noticed this for the first time on Hardy after installing Catalyst 9.9
and since then I have the same problem on Karmic and Catalyst 9.10/9.11 as well.
Last version of fglrx driver which works for me is the one from Catalyst 9.8
patched for Karmic's kernel (2.6.31)

This crash report has been made after reboot from unresponsive system
and logging into single mode and then collecting the data by apport-cli

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 380009] Re: [Needs quirk] Huge font in GDM on HP Compaq nc8430

2009-11-21 Thread eocanha
I have the same bug in a Packard Bell EasyNote MX35 with an Intel 945GM
(I guess).

The problem could be solved specifying the DPI by hand to the X server
in the /etc/gdm/gdm.conf. You have to change the lines:

[server-Standard]
name=Standard server
command=/usr/bin/X -br -audit 0

by...

[server-Standard]
name=Standard server
command=/usr/bin/X -br -dpi 75 -audit 0

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 434416] Re: Xorg grabs all of RAM; UI appears frozen

2009-11-21 Thread Bill Harris
Bill Harris bill_har...@facilitatedsystems.com writes:

How did you get your uptime up to 5 days?

I have no idea; I didn't do anything special. I did accept any upgrades
_except_ kernel upgrades, as I'm already on 2.6.31.

Just for the record: my system locked up at between 6 and 7 days. I
rebooted, and uptime is now 1.5 days.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 434956] Re: screen backlight off after resume-from-suspend when using ATI KMS

2009-11-21 Thread Robert McKee
The fix I posted in #34 above, did not work consistently. I have
installed the ati and radeon drive from Jaunty. I can now suspend
perfectly. So this bug really applied to a version of the ATI driver
that is above the one released in Jaunty.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477972] Re: [i855] Karmic / i855GM / Fujistu Siemens Amilo M7400 : Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855

2009-11-21 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Actually, I'm not quite sure when the DRI option is taken into account and
when it's not. On my computer (965GM) it is not ignored, Xorg.0.log says
(**) intel(0): Option DRI off
but glxinfo says
direct rendering: Yes
and yet my OpenGL screensaver (Busy Spheres) is down to about 1 fps as opposed
to something reasonable without the option, so something must have been turned
off. The comment # 6 I referred to in the previous comment was in bug 447892
and not this one. In that case the DRI option is clearly ignored. Maybe it
depends on the chipset. It would therefore be nice to have your Xorg.0.log with
KMS (i.e. no kernel option) and Option DRI off in xorg.conf in addition to
the ones mentioned in the previous comment.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401214] Re: [i965GM] Xorg starts to black screen with some corruption when using driver VESA (KMS bug)

2009-11-21 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Still there on the released Karmic. I also tried Lucid LiveUSB image in
case something in 2.6.32-rcX would have fixed this, but it is still the
same. I don't get crashs anymore. With LiveUSB the gdm startup sound
plays, and I'm able to blindly change VT, log in, and reboot with `sudo
reboot`.

The VTs look different from VT7 which has the X-session. They have just
a little bar in the upper left corner. The corrupted screen does not
change when I log in and enter commands.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 335678] Re: Failsafe X troubleshooting dialogs not translatable

2009-11-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
vorlon bryce_: so I had a look at gettext + failsafe X... the gettext
tool for extracting quoted strings from shell isn't very robust. I
think porting to python may be the better approach after all.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480747] Re: Failsafe X doesn't always overwrite /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe

2009-11-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Actually, I gave some thought to this, and decided that since
xorg.conf.failsafe is so obscure of a file, if someone did overwrite it,
it would likely have been for a good reason, and that overwriting it
would perhaps be rude.

For instance, this file assumes the vesa driver will work on their
hardware, but that is not true in all situations. Perhaps they edit it
to change to fbdev or something else. Shouldn't we respect whatever
they specify?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480744] Re: Failsafe X stuff shouldn't be stored in /etc/gdm

2009-11-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
The files are stored under /etc for historical reasons + laziness.

Really, by Karmic these no longer even have anything to do with gdm, so
there's little reason they should remain where they are. However, since
they are in /etc/, if we move them we also need rules to safely remove
the files from /etc during upgrades.

At this point given a few of the other failsafe-x bugs, it might make
sense to break these scripts out into a standalone package, rewrite it
in python, and provide both ncurses and gui frontends.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 348497] Re: Pulling Xorg virtualbox support by default

2009-11-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
I talked with Dustin about this at UDS. KVM is the preferred standard
default for virtualization. virtualbox is currently a universe
component, and it would need to be included in main before we could
consider including support for it for X by default.

Further, giving the large number of vbox X bug reports we've seen, I
would want to see a vbox person identified to handle all these bug
reports as I unfortunately wouldn't have time to give them adequate
attention myself.
