Hi Team. This has also been driving me crazy, I have tried visual effects and nothing makes a difference. I first noticed this issue in 9.04 and currently have done a rebuild to 9.10, no change. I have also tried with RT kernal via Ubuntu Studio, no change do have a small HP laptop with integrated Intel graphics compaq nc4200. Please advise what other information you require and how to obtain it. I am keen to help debug and get over this issue. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 301958] Re: [needs-packaging] no working driver for sis 671/771 video cards
ok, I went back to source code and had a quick look. since the screen is set wrong, i placed a fudge in the code to test. since I didn't want to take chances the fudge was for 1024x768. Xorg.0.log now has (--) SIS(0): Detected LCD/Plasma panel (max. X 1024 Y 768, pref. 1024x768, RGB24) xorg goes on to detect the resolution but still doesn't display an screen. If I switch on the xorg.conf Option VESA yes I get an Xsession. So, clearly something else is going on here - Can someone who as a LAPTOP with SiS671 graphics card Widescreen LCD that works - post a copy of there Xorg.0.log so I can compare there output to mine. It may provide further clues as to what I need to change. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 368946] Re: [i965gm] Closing and opening lid sometimes leads to screen ENDLESSLY BLINKING
Hi. I have found out that a very simple workaround works for me: suspend and resume. It is not so easy to trigger suspend while the screen is blinking. Therefore I have configured the machine to suspend when the power button is pressed. Thus my workaround in fact means pressing the power button, waiting a bit for the machine to suspend (it takes a bit longer while the screen is blinking), and then again pressing the power button to wake up the machine. -- [i965gm] Closing and opening lid sometimes leads to screen ENDLESSLY BLINKING https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368946 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Not sure, if this is helpful, but https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/513890 seems to be similar. All reports about this kind of problem seem to use 2.6.32 + nvidia. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516909] Re: entire desktop environment locks up in 9.10, i3-530 proc, built-in graphics
I can confirm this bug. The same things happened today on a brand new computer with an ASUS P7H55-M PRO motherboard fitted with an Intel i3-530 CPU, both in the Live CD environment and after a successful installation (had to use the alternate installer). After a bit of googling I found an acceptable workaround though. By chaning the last line in /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager to COMPIZ_NAME=metacity (effectively turning desktop effects off) everything seems to work just fine. I can't tell for sure if this workaround will work in the long run as I just installed the system but it's been working flawlessly for about an hour now compared to the 5-10 seconds it did before. Could someone enlighten me/us as to whether this is a bug in the driver, in Compiz or in the kernel? For the record I'm running a stock Karmic kernel (2.6.31-19-generic). -- entire desktop environment locks up in 9.10, i3-530 proc, built-in graphics https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/516909 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati I just upgraded to Karmic. As with Jaunty, I use the setting No visual effects. Starting system monitor yields a fairly stable pattern, with no borders. Setting visual effects to normal bypasses the problem (of course at a performance lowering). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384490] [NEW] System with Intel 945GM freezes
You have been subscribed to a public bug: System with Intel 945GM freezes randomly Somebody might say this is a duplicate of this bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/Linux/+bug/355155/ but since I believe the other bug is a mix of at least 3 different bugs I start this one here *ONLY* for systems with an Intel graphics chip. With Jaunty $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 9.04 Release:9.04 my *Gnome* desktop freezes randomly - I have *Compiz* activated. That did not occur with Intrepid. A *memtest* does not find any problems - it ran almost for 24 hours. During a freeze my mouse still moves so it's not a complete system freeze anyway. My laptop is a Lenovo X60s. The typical situation is (AFAIR) not related to Compiz' scale feature as I wrote in the other bug report before. All I can say for sure is that the last 5 times it happened was while I was watching a video with *gmplayer*. The video has these characteristics: $ file that video RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 624 x 352, 23.98 fps, video: XviD, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz) At the same time I was surfing these two websites using firefox: www.spiegel.de www.amazona.de $ firefox --version Mozilla Firefox 3.0.10, Copyright (c) 1998 - 2009 mozilla.org These sites contain flash and I have adobe's flash plug-in installed: $ dpkg -l | grep adobe ii adobe-flashplugin 10.0.22.87-2jaunty1 Adobe Flash Player plugin version 10 While the laptop is frozen I can't - leave X and switch to a real console (tty1) - press CAPS or NUM LOCK... - SSH on that machine During one of the last freezes I had a camera in grabbing range. I tried the key combo alt-sysrq-k. It took about 30s and this happened: Screen is black with a thick blue stripe on the right side. See here http://pkqs.net/~cf/small-IMG_1303 . After pressing alt-sysrq-k several times this window appeared: Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode - also saying: (EE) intel(0): Failed to set tiling on front buffer: rejected by kernel. See here http://pkqs.net/~cf/small-IMG_1304 . Then another window appears asking what to do. See here http://pkqs.net/~cf/small-IMG_1305 . I chose Exit to console login. This put me on tty1 but totally screwed up - I wasn't able to type something blindly. See here http://pkqs.net/~cf/small-IMG_1307 . Going back to the console where gnome was running on showed this here http://pkqs.net/~cf/small-IMG_1308 . After pressing ctrl-alt-backspace my computer performed a shut down. After thinking a little about that line here: (EE) intel(0): Failed to set tiling on front buffer: rejected by kernel I remembered that I manually added some proposed lines to my xorg.conf that I read about in a Howto dealing with that Intel driver performance loss - see here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/IntelPerformance Section Device Identifier Configured Video Device Option AccelMethod uxa Option EXAOptimizeMigration true Option MigrationHeuristic greedy Option Tiling true EndSection I removed the lines dealing with Tiling and MigrationHeuristic but this morning I had another freeze. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 518201] [NEW] [Lucid]Freeze on login
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Using a new T410 Lenovo Thinkpad I was able to install both Ubuntu and Xubuntu 10.4 Alpha 2. However, after applying all pending system updates recommended by the package manager X freezes after I enter my password to log on. This occurs whether I select a normal Gnome or XFCE session, an xterm, or an alternate window manager (Awesome or XMonad). I am able to use CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to another terminal and log into a session without X. Since I am able to log on without using X, and since I can reproduce the bug with both GNOME and XFCE I presume this is a bug in X. Brian did note that it's not going to cause the freeze 100% of the time, but I wanted to reinforce that it's not a one and done check. After leaving the stock karmic repo versions running overnight, X did freeze, which made me glad, because I hadn't just imagined it before! Still no freezes with the ppa: libdrm2: 2.4.11-2+karmic3 xserver-xorg-video-intel: 2.8.0-8-g12c5aec kernel: 2.6.31-17-generic mesa: 7.4.1-1ubuntu6+karmic -- [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/456902 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516909] Re: entire desktop environment locks up in 9.10, i3-530 proc, built-in graphics
Sam, Thanks for your comment. I also found that fix, while it did fix a lockup when ubuntu first boots up, it doesn't prevent the overall stability issues related to the video driver/or X or whatever the problem is. Depending on what you are doing (normal usage), you'll eventually trigger the lockup again. Picking a 2D or 3D screensaver seems to be a surefire way of reproducing the problem. Note that Centos 5.3/5.4 seems to work fine on that hardware combo(i3+H55). Also, Fedora 12 Desktop worked fine. I loaded X screensaver (don't know if that is the same as on ubuntu) but also loaded a large number of screensavers, and Fedora seems to be fine. I don't know or pretend to understand all the different versions of all the utilities enough to tell why this is. I've almost exclusively used Debian, Ubuntu and derivatives (like Linux Mint) --- I'm not crazy to jump to a Redhat based release. At the same time, this is really frustrating. I've got a brand new machine, _really_ am trying not to load Windows, and I have very little options to actually use this hardware! Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 464591] Re: upgrade breaks graphic drivers and x, preventing login or startx
I still have the same Bug. i Upgrade and i install from cero i mean i do a clean instal and my graphic card ATI radeon breaks. Claudio Fron Chile 2010/2/6 joherrer joher...@gmail.com I am invited now to upgrade to 9.10. I first installed 9.10 and had to quit due to nvidia. Then my son installed 9.4 and it is doing well. ¿Is it safe to accept the challenge upgrade? -- upgrade breaks graphic drivers and x, preventing login or startx https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/464591 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: see also here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305459 for some reasons the upgrade breaks proprietary graphics drivers this means a flickering screen without the possibility to login or startx. ATTENTION Since this bug report is being linked to by news stories, it is getting viewed by many people with nvidia bugs that fail in similar ways but due to unrelated causes. I'd like to direct them to more appropriate bug reports: The blinks on reboot issue is a bug in gdm, bug #441638. That blinking symptom will occur for any sort of failure of X to start, and there are a lot of reasons why X may not start, so be aware that just because someone else is reporting this same blinking behavior does not necessarily mean you have the same underlying cause as them, so keep digging. This is causing lots of confusion in bug reports. For those who have upgraded since Intrepid or earlier, there is an issue reported where /sbin/lrm-video can cause nvidia to fail loading. That file no longer exists in Jaunty or Karmic and you can safely delete it as a work around. Bug #467490 describes this issue. I don't know how common this is, but if it is common we may need to make sure the upgrader removes the file properly. Manually uninstalling all nvidia packages *might* clear the file. For people running -rt kernels, such as Ubuntu Studio users, -nvidia has a known incompatibility there, see bug #464125 for example. Similar situation for -pae kernels, see bug #454220 as a recent example. Someone mentioned that the upgrader disables the proprietary drivers. According to mvo, that is not correct, or at least not intentional. However, the upgrader *does* remove driver entries from xorg.conf if the driver is no longer present after upgrade. As far as I know, this should all work seamlessly for people, however several people have reported that removing their xorg.conf and reinstalling -nvidia helped, so it is possible there is an error in this logic. If you suspect this is the case, what we need is a full bug report filed using 'ubuntu-bug xorg'; in particular we need to see the xorg.conf files so we understand how the upgrader is misbehaving. I see a lot in forum articles the advice that the solution is to remove nvidia or fglrx lines from xorg.conf. While this may help in getting the system functioning again, please note that it is not a solution - it merely turns off the proprietary drivers. Whatever the original problem was is still there, you're just using different video drivers. Also, be aware that both nvidia and fglrx install GL and other libraries on top of the normal system libraries, so if you install one of those drivers and then use something else, it may work for 2D but you may run into severe problems for 3D. This is also a known issue - bug 258038 describes one possible solution we will be considering for Lucid. It's a hard problem to solve for proprietary drivers though. There are almost certainly more nvidia bugs, but we also have plenty of other bug reports (over 300 against -nvidia so far), many of which have been reported using ubuntu-bug so are closer to having the information we need. Finally, regarding people skills, actually after thousands of X bug reports those get worn down to a raw nub so I don't think I have them any more. All that's left is a grumpy X maintainer. p.s. Also see bug 438398 which appears to be the root cause for a lot of the nvidia failures. Unfortunately jockey may not be flagging these errors to the user (bug 441638) leading them to reboot without the nvidia driver fully installed. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 518269] [NEW] xcb_io.c assertion error following forkpty and raw_input in PyGTK
Public bug reported: I am writing a PyGTK application which involves a vte Terminal. I use a forkpty() call to launch a child process in the terminal. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 159594] Re: Crash to white screen of death (possibly Firefox?)
I finally got this bug into a can yesterday. I thought it had gone away, but it started showing up again, though very rarely. Then yesterday, I found a way to reproduce it. At least it worked twice in a row. If someone will tell me what to do, maybe it will be possible to diagnose it now. The situation that triggers the bug is on a completely fresh installation of the latest Ubuntu 9.10, with the updates to yesterday. As soon as the machine is booted, start Firefox, and then open a terminal window. The command sudo update-grub will ask for the password and then immediately go to the white screen of death. I'm not sure what to do from this position, or how to set up the machine to capture the required information, but this is the first time I've apparently found a way to reproduce the crash. I want to help, and I'm willing to try to fix this OLD bug--but I admit that at this point I'm increasingly doubtful that Ubuntu is worth the effort. I am pretty strongly motivated by my love of freedom, and my desire to be free of Microsoft and Apple--but Ubuntu seems to be going in the wrong direction in terms of offering a viable option that will bring us more freedom. I absolutely cannot recommend recent versions of Ubuntu to anyone. This 9.10 release is totally crippled in the sound on many machines that I've tested, which already tells me that they testing was totally inadequate. This old bug of the WSOD is still around after a couple of years, so it is obvious that the real cause has never been found and fixed. I desperately want Ubuntu to succeed, but it is increasingly obvious that this economic model is NOT working to provide sufficient testing. -- Crash to white screen of death (possibly Firefox?) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/159594 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
