Great. :) Maybe it was > an issue with those old NVIDIA files in the first place. > > If the issue is resolved for you, please mark this bug as Invalid (since > it was probably a configuration problem). Thanks! David, Yes, the original symptoms have disappeared, but new ones have appeared in their place. Presumably all due to the 'configuration' or 'bug'. What would be causing the screen to display a mosaic on loading? I have also noted that the screen takes ~1-2 seconds longer to repaint in certain instances. For example, when the panels appear at startup - this takes 2 or so seconds where previously it was 1/2 a second. Although the screen appears to be working "the desktop" does not appear quite right. After implementing your fix I have had the computer crash due what appeared to be screen related problems. What happened was ... - I went to log off and the desktop noted that an unknown program was still open. - I waited but it did not finish. - I looked in the system monitor and could not see it. - Eventually I tried again and told the logout routine to force a shutdown. - What happened then was the screen became totally jumbled (looking suspiciously like the screen when starting up - i.e. confused) - I forced a hardware reboot and the problem has not reoccurred; yet In another instance (again showing how things are not quite right) ... - I logged off as a user and the dialog box listing the available users on the desktop behaved in an unusual manner. - instead of appearing in the centre of the screen as usual the dialog box repainted so the height occupied the entire screen, then stepped down until eventually reaching 'normal size'. The process took 1-2 seconds, which seemed like an eternity. I was able to log back on. - its like ubuntu is getting confused, or the driver is not really working properly. The fact that things eventually settle down - DURING A PARTICULAR SESSION - suggests that either the 'bug' is only triggered at certain times or ubuntu is falling back to generic drivers as the appropriate one does not work correctly. So David, in your mind is this 'bug' actually fixed? To me, something is still not quite right. The system was more stable originally, just a pain to have to setup the dual screens on startup. Now I don't have to do this but a range of new symptoms have appeared. Superficially the aberrations are not deal breakers but that assumes (a) the symptoms are not indicative of something more serious, or (b) the system does not leave my 'blind' while doing some mission critical task resulting in data loss or corruption. If you can help resolve these questions, it would be greatly appreciated, as my confidence in the stability of the system is undermined everytime I see a screen that would normally just appear; flicker, repaint slowly or not appear to behave in the same way as normal. -- Cheers Simon Simon Cropper Botanicus Australia Pty Ltd PO Box 160 Sunshine 3020 P: 03 9311 5822. @Brian Rogers Many thanks - I'd just like to report that your patch (linux-image-2.6.34-v9patch-generic) appears to be working perfectly for me, with my i855 HP Compaq Nx5000. I'm not trying anything fancy regarding video - but can report that the system now starts normally, no freeze during boot, and - so far - no odd messages. Further, using Cheese with my (equally) ancient webcam does not crash the system either, which happened with previous attempts at fixes. It is also remaining stable with advanced visual effects selected via desktop background. Only thing I haven't tried is suspend - but that is because I need to press down on the casing of my old machine near the power input to get it to power up at all with any OS - and I always had problems with suspend, anyway (go figure...). So I have removed the 10.04 rc7 Mainline kernel at last!! I'll report back if I get any problems. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595335] Re: Computer shuts down on heavy CPU usage due to overheating
** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati When I'm doing a demanding CPU activity (ripping a CD, doing OCR, etc), the computer shuts itself down due to overheating (more than 99 C). I've tried running sudo sensors-detect but no modules were loaded. I've also tried booting with option "acpi.power_nocheck", but to no use. I've also tried adding options radeon modeset=1 to /etc/modprobe.d /radeon-kms.conf. Lastly, I updated my BIOS from the vendor's webpage, but it didn't help either. This is more likely to happen while on the open-source ATI drivers. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554569] Re: [lucid] Blank screen with KMS on Thinkpad X201 with Arrandale (i915)
I compiled the Current 2.6.35 vanilla kernel today, and it also fails showing anything on the LVDS. I also would like to add, that though patching the kernel with the "err_most += 50;" works for me, but I still get the mentioned DRM error message, when sometimes connecting or disconnecting an external monitor, so maybe the above workaround isn't the best way to solve this. I am on a Thinkpad X201 with Core i5-540M and BIOS 1.15. I am ready to provide any needed information and do any testing to help solving this issue. -- [lucid] Blank screen with KMS on Thinkpad X201 with Arrandale (i915) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554569 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes
I have a very similar issue as Jonathan described with my wireless card - also a RTL8192. Interestingly, lockups only occur on certain wireless networks (e.g. EAP Type: PEAP; Network Authentication: WPAWPA2; Data Encryption: TKIP/AES; Authentication Method/Protocol: MSCHAP-V2; Inner EAP Type: EAP-MSCHAPv2), other connections (e.g. home networks) appear to work better (albeit not completely flawlessly). Both standard 64bit 2.6.32 kernel and lucid 2.6.34-020634-generic are affected. My current workaround is to disable the wireless card by its hardware switch. -- Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 597765] [NEW] Window manager does not start, must run compiz --replace
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg After upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10, no window manager is started when I login to GNOME via GDM. The applications in my startup items do launch, but they have no window decoration and I cannot switch input to any of them. To fix this, I have to switch to the console and run 'compiz --replace' to get a window manager. If I choose "Failsafe GNOME" from the login window, I get a window manager. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 362359] Re: Focus gets stuck to a window - impossible to select other windows
I have the same problem after upgrading karmic to lucid but only when I use my bluetooth mouse. If I boot with my wired mouse, I never have focus problems; when I work from home and use my wireless bluetooth mouse, the problem recurs without fail. I haven't yet experimented with using my touchpad/touchstick and not my bluetooth mouse. Other difference between home (focus problems and bluetooth mouse) v. work (works with wired mouse) is that I use two external monitors at work and just my Dell 6500 laptop display at home. I have an NVidia Quadro NVS 160M graphics adapter and am using driver version 195.36.24. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes
Also affects me. Sometimes REISUB works, sometimes not. Either this bug or all the hard resets have completely destabilized the system. Trying to pull information using scp off of the system causes frequent network errors. apt-get upgrade is failing with hash sum mismatches. I've got 3 machines on 10.4. First machine randomly reboots itself. Second machine exhibits the freeze problem - dozens of times a day if I log in with X, not at all if I just ssh in to read my mail with mutt. The last machine seems to be stable (but flash no longer works in firefox (all three machines)). I know these are separate problems and I should file separate bugs, but having followed this bug and some related ones, I have no faith that the OS provides the means to diagnose these problems. This release is clearly not ready, though I suspect that it's a crappy kernel causing most of the problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 195982] Re: Shift key (and caps lock) stop working when using VMWare
Hello, I have the same problem. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 VMware player 3.0.1 build-227600 I have had the problem now twice, so I cannot say much about the regularity. setxkbmap works. I am using this configuration for several months. The problem with non-working SHIFT, CTRL and ALT keys occurred only in the last week. The only change in the configuration (except for the usual updates) is: a new keyboard and a new mouse. I have now a keyboard without a numeric keyboard (to minimize RSI problems, the new keyboard is only 30 cm width instead of 45 cm, so that the right hand is in a better position to hold the mouse). And the second time I had this problem (I cann't remember about the first one), the virtual PC had crashed, and when started again, it said it could not grab the keyboard. DAP wrote: "That is hard to believe since the only video card in my system is the Radeon HD4850, and that is the one connected to the monitor." Sorry, I should have been more clear. The information I pasted from your glxinfo file indicates that your RV770 (Radeon HD4850) is not being used for OpenGL rendering, which is a bit odd. It is of course being used for modesetting and framebuffer display. -- Dumped into login screen while using google earth https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/588980 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance
Another month passed and still no solution. Tested it on numerous machines with all nVidia hardware and the all suffer from this regression. Even all G92 chips (8800GTS 512MB, Quadro FX3800M) I own show massive frame loss and actually make it unusable. Along with this issue and a couple of other regressions makes me looking for another distro.
