David,

Yes, the original symptoms have disappeared, but new ones have appeared in
their place. Presumably all due to the 'configuration' or 'bug'.

What would be causing the screen to display a mosaic on loading? I have also
noted that the screen takes ~1-2 seconds longer to repaint in certain
instances. For example, when the panels appear at startup - this takes 2 or so
seconds where previously it was 1/2 a second. Although the screen appears to
be working "the desktop" does not appear quite right.

After implementing your fix I have had the computer crash due what appeared to
be screen related problems.

What happened was ...
- I went to log off and the desktop noted that an unknown program was still
open.
- I waited but it did not finish.
- I looked in the system monitor and could not see it.
- Eventually I tried again and told the logout routine to force a shutdown.
- What happened then was the screen became totally jumbled (looking
suspiciously like the screen when starting up - i.e. confused)
- I forced a hardware reboot and the problem has not reoccurred; yet

In another instance (again showing how things are not quite right) ...
- I logged off as a user and the dialog box listing the available users on the
desktop behaved in an unusual manner.
- instead of appearing in the centre of the screen as usual the dialog box
repainted so the height occupied the entire screen, then stepped down until
eventually reaching 'normal size'. The process took 1-2 seconds, which seemed
like an eternity. I was able to log back on.
- its like ubuntu is getting confused, or the driver is not really working
properly. The fact that things eventually settle down - DURING A PARTICULAR
SESSION - suggests that either the 'bug' is only triggered at certain times or
ubuntu is falling back to generic drivers as the appropriate one does not work
correctly.

So David, in your mind is this 'bug' actually fixed? To me, something is still
not quite right. The system was more stable originally, just a pain to have to
setup the dual screens on startup. Now I don't have to do this but a range of
new symptoms have appeared. Superficially the aberrations are not deal breakers
but that assumes (a) the symptoms are not indicative of something more
serious, or (b) the system does not leave my 'blind' while doing some mission
critical task resulting in data loss or corruption.

If you can help resolve these questions, it would be greatly appreciated, as
my confidence in the stability of the system is undermined everytime I see a
screen that would normally just appear; flicker, repaint slowly or not appear
to behave in the same way as normal.

Could you please reproduce this issue on a fresh boot and then either
switch to a TTY or SSH in and get a copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log,
/var/log/dmesg, and the output of dmesg?

Also please test with the xorg-edgers PPA [1]. Make sure you install

Also try the current mainline kernel [2]. Installation instructions are

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2010-06-23 Thread David Oser
@Brian Rogers
Many thanks - I'd just like to report that your patch
(linux-image-2.6.34-v9patch-generic) appears to be working perfectly for me,
with my i855 HP Compaq Nx5000. I'm not trying anything fancy regarding video -
but can report that the system now starts normally, no freeze during boot, and
- so far - no odd messages. Further, using Cheese with my (equally) ancient
webcam does not crash the system either, which happened with previous attempts
at fixes. It is also remaining stable with advanced visual effects selected via
desktop background. Only thing I haven't tried is suspend - but that is because
I need to press down on the casing of my old machine near the power input to
get it to power up at all with any OS - and I always had problems with suspend,
anyway (go figure...). So I have removed the 10.04 rc7 Mainline kernel at
last!! I'll report back if I get any problems.
Best
David

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595158] Re: Synaptics touchpad lock toogle freeze menu (Ubuntu 10.04)

2010-06-23 Thread Leo Arias
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as
a bug in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics.
(With many applications, you can report a future bug directly on the
appropriate package by opening the application's "Help" menu and choosing
"Report a Problem". https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs)

** Package changed: ubuntu => xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595158] [NEW] Synaptics touchpad lock toogle freeze menu (Ubuntu 10.04)

2010-06-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Pavilion dv6000
After I hit the touchpad lock the menu freezes (restart needed).
It works fine on 9.10.
I've tried to remove “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics" pakage but the problem
persists.
Disabling touchpad using an applet it works properly.

This bug affects (in other forms) Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Fedora 13!
I think it's a kernel problem!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 595335] Re: Computer shuts down on heavy CPU usage due to overheating

2010-06-23 Thread Flavio Capobianco
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

When I'm doing a demanding CPU activity (ripping a CD, doing OCR, etc),
the computer shuts itself down due to overheating (more than 99 C).

I've tried running sudo sensors-detect but no modules were loaded.

I've also tried booting with option "acpi.power_nocheck", but to no use.

I've also tried adding options radeon modeset=1 to /etc/modprobe.d
  /radeon-kms.conf.

Lastly, I updated my BIOS from the vendor's webpage, but it didn't help
  either.

This is more likely to happen while on the open-source ATI drivers.

2010-06-23 Thread Eshat Cakar
I compiled the Current 2.6.35 vanilla kernel today, and it also fails showing
anything on the LVDS.
I also would like to add, that though patching the kernel with the "err_most +=
50;" works for me, but I still get the mentioned DRM error message, when
sometimes connecting or disconnecting an external monitor, so maybe the above
workaround isn't the best way to solve this.

I am on a Thinkpad X201 with Core i5-540M and BIOS 1.15.
I am ready to provide any needed information and do any testing to help solving
this issue.

HPLIP has to do with printers when this is an intel video issue.
Reassigning to xserver-xorg-video-intel.

Could you please test the current desktop CD for 10.04 32-bit from

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588973] Re: Touchpad settings reset suspend/hibernate

2010-06-23 Thread Fabrice
A few more pieces of infos regarding this issue :
- If I use the "xinput -list-props" command before sleep/hibernate and after
resume, I distinctly see that all the values are reset
- If I use the "xinput -list" command after resume, I see that once in a while,
the "AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad id=14" disappears and is replaced
by a "PS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad id=13"

So far, the only workaround I've found is to cron the command bellow to reapply
my settings periodically.
xinput --set-prop "AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad" [prop] [value]

2010-06-23 Thread ischoegl
Jonathan - when I last looked (i.e. a couple of weeks ago), I couldn't
find anything. I can post log files, if you let me know which ones ...

There seem to be several other people with this issue,
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9496737&postcount=550 and see
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9496998&postcount=552. One thing
people mentioned in this thread (almost 600 posts about system freezes,
albeit there seem to be a number of different reasons) is that it should
be still possible to ssh into a 'frozen' machine. I haven't tried it
yet, though ...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 597813] [NEW] package nvidia-current (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: nvidia-current kernel module failed to build

2010-06-23 Thread alex_l
Public bug reported:

can't install nvidia drivers from jockey nor manually; it used to work,
however I switched for some time to my integrated radeon hd4200+fglrx,
now I'm back on nvidia, prior to installing nvidia drivers I purged
fglrx, reinstalled libgl1-* and removed xorg.conf .

I'm running 2.6.32-22-generic-pae , kernel headers are in-place, I even
purged & reinstalled them to be safe.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 589940] Re: [arrandale] maverick alpha 1 live doesn't display desktop

2010-06-23 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
I found this bug report upstream which is probably the same issue:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28070 . It is probably the
same problem as this. They're happy to receive duplicate bug reports
upstream (since it may turn out later to not be a duplicate), though, so
we can still forward it.

>From that bug report, it looks like they also need the file produced by
`sudo intel_reg_dumper >intel_reg_dumper.txt` and the video bios dump
that you can get by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingXorg#Obtaining%20the%20video%20BIOS .

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-23 Thread k...@perfectreign.com
running without X, my proxy server (on my DMZ at home) has now been up
for 5 days. Running powertop also has no problems. This machine is a
desktop and doesn't use wireless.

Out of curiosity - i wonder how a wireless card driver would cause xorg
to show 100% utilisation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-23 Thread ischoegl
I have a very similar issue as Jonathan described with my wireless card
- also a RTL8192. Interestingly, lockups only occur on certain wireless
networks (e.g. EAP Type: PEAP; Network Authentication: WPAWPA2; Data
Encryption: TKIP/AES; Authentication Method/Protocol: MSCHAP-V2; Inner
EAP Type: EAP-MSCHAPv2), other connections (e.g. home networks) appear
to work better (albeit not completely flawlessly). Both standard 64bit
2.6.32 kernel and lucid 2.6.34-020634-generic are affected. My current
workaround is to disable the wireless card by its hardware switch.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-23 Thread Jonathan
I've identified at least one cause in my situation to be the wireless
card/driver. I'm running 2.6.32-21-generic-pae with the latest driver
for my wireless card (realtek RTL8192). This same driver is built into
later kernels. A few days ago I enabled/disabled the wireless interface
trying to get onto a network and my machine completely locked up.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554569] Re: [lucid] Blank screen with KMS on Thinkpad X201 with Arrandale (i915)

2010-06-23 Thread Haitao Zhang
After upgrade BIOS to 1.15 (6QET45WW), Embedded Controller Verison 1.09
my i7-M620 X201 still won't affect with this bug, but I already reproduce this
bug on another i3 X201.
Looks through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrandale_(microprocessor) page,
i3/i5/i7 are all in "Arrandale" Family, so it's really confused why this bug
only happened on i3/i5.

Thanks for your update, mabawsa and fanofanne,
could guys please help me test whether mainstream kernel also have this bug on
your X201?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 597771] [NEW] twinview: windows maximize across both monitors

2010-06-23 Thread purecharger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10, the window manager (compiz) does not
treat my 2 displays as it did with 9.10. Now windows maximize across
both screens, they do not snap to the screen boundary, my lower task bar
(where apps get minimized to) extends across both monitors without
appearing: by that I mean I dont see it on the 2nd monitor, but I can
not resize a window into the area that it would take up on the 2nd
monitor.

The alt+tab switcher and all windows that launch in the center of the
screen are split across the monitors.

I have my 2 screens in both nvidia-xconfig and CCSM defined as: 0,0+0+0
and 0,1920+0+0

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 573601] [NEW] Lucid: GLX not working on Nvidia driver

2010-06-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After updating my karmic system to lucid, GLX stopped working.

I am using the nvidia driver. The reason for the problem is that X loads
the GLX module from xserver-xorg-core, and the nvidia driver explicitly
asks for an Nvidia GLX-driver.

I'm attaching my xorg.conf.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 597765] [NEW] Window manager does not start, must run compiz --replace

2010-06-23 Thread purecharger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10, no window manager is started when I
login to GNOME via GDM. The applications in my startup items do launch,
but they have no window decoration and I cannot switch input to any of
them. To fix this, I have to switch to the console and run 'compiz
--replace' to get a window manager.

If I choose "Failsafe GNOME" from the login window, I get a window
manager.

This did not happen with Ubuntu 9.10

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 362359] Re: Focus gets stuck to a window - impossible to select other windows

2010-06-23 Thread rcoe67
I have the same problem after upgrading karmic to lucid but only when I
use my bluetooth mouse. If I boot with my wired mouse, I never have
focus problems; when I work from home and use my wireless bluetooth
mouse, the problem recurs without fail. I haven't yet experimented with
using my touchpad/touchstick and not my bluetooth mouse.

Other difference between home (focus problems and bluetooth mouse) v.
work (works with wired mouse) is that I use two external monitors at
work and just my Dell 6500 laptop display at home. I have an NVidia
Quadro NVS 160M graphics adapter and am using driver version 195.36.24.
My X is version 1.7.6 from x.org.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-23 Thread scott urban
Also affects me.

Sometimes REISUB works, sometimes not. Either this bug or all the hard resets
have completely
destabilized the system. Trying to pull information using scp off of the
system causes frequent network
errors. apt-get upgrade is failing with hash sum mismatches.

I've got 3 machines on 10.4.

First machine randomly reboots itself.

Second machine exhibits the freeze problem - dozens of times a day if I log in
with X, not at all if I just ssh
in to read my mail with mutt.

The last machine seems to be stable (but flash no longer works in
firefox (all three machines)).

I know these are separate problems and I should file separate bugs, but having
followed this bug
and some related ones, I have no faith that the OS provides the means to
diagnose these
problems.

This release is clearly not ready, though I suspect that it's a crappy
kernel causing most of the problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 597735] [NEW] Display resolution sometimes wrong after resume from suspend to ram

2010-06-23 Thread vasek125
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Sometimes after resume from suspend to ram resolution is incorrect. It
can be easily corrected using gnome display setting or using "xrandr -s
1680x1050 -r 60". Saving current resolution before suspend and restoring
after resume should fix this(but rarely resolution is wrong after system
boot). I had the same problem with 9.04. Xorg.conf configuration does
not corrected this. Only xrandr utility can fix this.

You're still using the RADEON driver. Having fglrx installed breaks the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 195982] Re: Shift key (and caps lock) stop working when using VMWare

2010-06-23 Thread Nelly
Hello,

I have the same problem.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04
VMware player 3.0.1 build-227600
I have had the problem now twice, so I cannot say much about the regularity.
setxkbmap works.
I am using this configuration for several months. The problem with non-working
SHIFT, CTRL and ALT keys occurred only in the last week. The only change in the
configuration (except for the usual updates) is: a new keyboard and a new mouse.
I have now a keyboard without a numeric keyboard (to minimize RSI problems, the
new keyboard is only 30 cm width instead of 45 cm, so that the right hand is in
a better position to hold the mouse).
And the second time I had this problem (I cann't remember about the first one),
the virtual PC had crashed, and when started again, it said it could not grab
the keyboard. I have had this message before (before and I believe also after
the keyboard change), without any consequences for the SHIFT etc. keys.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The information I pasted from

used for OpenGL rendering, which is a bit odd. It is of course being
used for modesetting and framebuffer display.

2010-06-23 Thread Reason
Another month passed and still no solution.

Tested it on numerous machines with all nVidia hardware and the all suffer from
this regression.
Even all G92 chips (8800GTS 512MB, Quadro FX3800M) I own show massive frame
loss and actually make it unusable.
Along with this issue and a couple of other regressions makes me looking for
another distro.
A shame though i kinda liked the Ubuntu philosophy..
