[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 653021] Re: Mouse's left button stops working.

2010-10-23 Thread Unmensch
Ditto on Maverick. Left mouse button fails after a few seconds of
playing music or video on either totem or rhythmbox (Intel Corporation
N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01) sound, in
case that helps). Using keyboard with integrated touch pad, neither the
left-hand mouse button nor tapping the touch pad itself work. Going to
try it again with a USB mouse.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 665446] [NEW] Default/XVideo display overwrites on top of other windows decorations.

2010-10-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: vlc

This bug showed up after I upgraded to Maverick today. The default video
output (XVideo) shows a video frame that overwrites other windows as
well as VLC's own pop-down menus. Whichever the default output was in
Lucid, worked just fine.

Fortunately, the X11 video output doesn't have any problems, so
choosing that output is a good workaround for now.

I'm running a laptop with an Intel 915GM video card.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 665446] Re: Default/XVideo display overwrites on top of other windows decorations.

2010-10-23 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
is mostly a problem of the past these days. To fix it, you can try to
use another XVideo adapter, change GPU, or maybe fix the XVideo driver.

In any case, this is not a VLC problem.

# (i use the one from the nvidia website)
# with nvidia driver installed i got libGL dependency errors
#
# ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.12.run --uninstall

debuild -us -uc -i

cd ..

# install the new xserver

  But only dmesg spam disappear.
X goes on 100% cpu usage after suspend and make the system unusable.
  Someone have the same problem?

my card is nvidia GT 320M

I'm also having certain stability issues after resume from suspend with
the latest drivers (on Lucid). Sometimes Xorg starts lagging horribly
with long stalls immediately after resume. Switch to console and back
fixes the problem. But I can't say whether that is related to this bug
or not. I filed a bug report at nvnews.net here:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 650539] Re: Launching QT apps under Xinerama crashes Xorg : affects SpeedCrunch, KeePassX, Lucky Backup, Pencil, Stellarium, Skype, Google Earth, VLC, Konqueror, VirtualBox, Opera

2010-10-23 Thread Ian
Steffen:

Thanks, that debuild command is what I was missing. I added a -j4 to the
commandline to take advantage of all CPU cores.

Sadly I get the libGL dependencies errors no matter WHAT I do. No nvidia
package installed (I had nvidia-current, rather than the binary from
nvidia's site, and no fglrx. The only libGL is from libgl1-mesa-glx and
that seems... unremovable without destroying a lot of other stuff).

I'll keep working on it!

2010-10-23 Thread Hooman
I just installed 10.10 (64-bit) on my X201 3249-39C and experienced this black
screen dead.
My BIOS just updated to 1.22, and the kernerl was 2.6.35-22-generic.

I have to specify i915.modeset=0 to login into tty1.
But no graphic appears since xserver error is somethin about:

(EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory
(EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected.
(II) UnloadModule: intel
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: Meerkat (10.10) does not apply theme properly

2010-10-23 Thread albert fishnets
Sorry about not trimming the last post. I was wrong about KDE. I
installed Kubuntu 10.10 to see if it was a real solution. QT based apps
display fine with themes and fonts but anything gtk still has the same
problem even when gnome is not present. It does seem to be specific to
gtk based apps if that helps.

cd xorg-server-1.9.0

#apply correction to file
sudo vi Xext/panoramiXprocs.c (and replace pWin with pDst on line 637. then
esc:x to save and quit

#install debuild
apt-get install devscripts

#install required libs as i didn't had them

#build the DEB packages
debuild -us -uc -i

cd ..

#install modified xorg-core
dpkg -i xserver-xorg-core_1.9.0-0ubuntu7_amd64.deb

reboot and SHAZAM !!, finally my 3 screens are back and xinerama work
fine.

I use the ubuntu nvidia drivers (nvidia-current). no need to remove
drivers or anything.

If someone is interrested by packages, you cand find them here :
http://dl.free.fr/qMumCkrLk
those are for amd64 (I have a intel core i5).

Kudos to Ochi, wor and listdata at ArchLinux for solving this
Many thanks to Steffen Reinecke for his tutorial and all other people who
helped.

Haha! I could've used your debs instead of working on this till

However, I did get it working. I had some weird /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2

suffer through Gnome! Yay!!!

(making sure to save the .deb/instructions for when there's an update

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660596] Re: Black screen after installing Nvidia drivers on 10.10

2010-10-23 Thread Dylan Coakley
I can confirm I have this exact same problem. I have an Nvidia 9800GT
512MB. When I install the proprietary driver, I restart. Before it gets
to the Ubuntu loading screen the screen goes completely black!

I have tried it at least 5 times and its still the same result. Getting
that Nvidia driver working for me lately has become a real sore spot of
Ubuntu.

Thank you Chad for the packages. But sadly, this doesn't fix the bug for me

Maybe it's a other bug, as I'm impacted by this issue with only one monitor

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 665513] [NEW] Xorg freeze after turning screens on/off

2010-10-23 Thread Gergely Fábián
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit (Linux gege-laptop 2.6.35-22-generic #35-Ubuntu
SMP Sat Oct 16 20:45:36 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux) on a Lenovo SL500. I have a
Philips external screen attached, and normally just that screen is turned on,
the laptop's built in one is turned off.
Assume I have Firefox already opened. If I go to Screen settings and turn on
and then off my laptop screen (all panels are on the external monitor, so my
laptop has just a plain background), then Firefox on the external screen does
the following:
If I want to change tabs by clicking to them, I see the window title changing,
but the actual tabs contents are not refreshed (similar thing is with scrolling
the window). This happens until I minimize FF to the tray and and maximize
again (also by mouse click). Then the tab contents that should have appeared
earlier finally get shown. The same thing is reproducible with VirtualBox
(screen contents don't get refreshed on actions until minimizing and
maximizing), and it seems the crucial point is turning off the laptop screen
(turning it on doesn't invoke the bug).

ProblemType: Bug

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 665513] Re: Xorg freeze after turning screens on/off

2010-10-23 Thread Gergely Fábián

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit (Linux gege-laptop 2.6.35-22-generic
#35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:45:36 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux) on a Lenovo
SL500. I have a Philips external screen attached, and normally just that screen
is turned on, the laptop's built in one is turned off.
- Assume I have Firefox already opened. If I go to Screen settings and turn off
my laptop screen (all panels are on the external monitor, so my laptop has just
a plain background), then Firefox on the external screen does the following:

scrolling the window). This happens until I minimize FF to the tray and and

VirtualBox (screen contents don't get refreshed on actions until minimizing and
maximizing), and it seems the crucial point is turning off the laptop screen
(turning it on doesn't invoke the bug).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2010-10-23 Thread Riku Eskelinen
@angandrob: As far as I know this bug cannot be fixed until NVidia
releases xorg 1.9 compatible binary driver. And NVidia has told via its
forum that they will release nvidia-96 driver for xorg 1.9, but it is
low priority issue for them. So all we can do now is sit back, relax and
enjoy our nv/vesa/nouveau drivers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 665520] [NEW] Xorg focus problems after automatic screen lock

2010-10-23 Thread Gergely Fábián
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When I turn off a screen lock that was invoked on a screensaver timeout the
following things happen:
* If a Firefox window is on the top of the screen, typing to the address bar
doesn't invoke auto-completion.
* If I have a Skype chat window open on top, then I can't type a new message to
it (it not just doesn't appear, it also doesn't get inserted)

Both problems get fixed if I minimize the program to tray, and open it
again (Firefox address auto-completion works and in Skype's case I can
type a message).

The bug can be reproduced just for the program that was on top (ie. if
Skype was on top, and FF behind, then autocompletion works). It seems
that the focus somehow is taken away (partly or totally) for the top
application. I have to note that if I lock the screen manually then the
bug also cannot be reproduced.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 654178] Re: Ubuntu 10.10 wont start strange image

2010-10-23 Thread rrfx
Long term ubuntu user here... same issue with nVidia GTS360M on Maverick
release.

To get your clean Maverick install booting:

In the grub boot menu edit the recovery mode option by hitting e,
add nomodeset to the last line. Ctrl-x to boot.

At the recovery menu choose root. Install the nvidia binary drivers by
typing: apt-get install nvidia-current

Reboot and enjoy an otherwise flawless install.

Ok, I've reproduced it - pressing a volume up/down media key kills the
left button on either a keyboard with a built-in touch pad or on a
standard Microsoft USB mouse. Tested on two computers running 32-bit

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2010-10-23 Thread John Harrington
The nouveau hardware accelerated 3-d driver works fairly well in
Maverick on my GeForce 4 MX 4000 card. Googleearth works pretty much as
it did with the proprietary driver, including 3-d buildings, except that
when the view moves close to horizontal and the horizon comes into view,
the photographic view of the earth sometimes suddenly disappears.
Otherwise, the 3-d effect works fine. Stellarium works at the same
speed as with the proprietary driver, but the sunlight illumination
doesn't appear on the planets (i.e., they appear in shadow from all
sides). Foobillard billiards simulation game works fine except that
there's an annoying moving shadow pattern on the table top. I haven't
had any crashes.

I can't turn on desktop effects--I get the message that I need the
proprietary driver.

According to the nouveau website, if you've got an nvidia card with a
nv30 or later chip and want to try the 3-d hardware accelerated driver,
you need nouveau_dri.so driver, which is in the libgl1-mesa-dri-
experimental package in maverick universe. If you've got a nv20 or
earlier chip, you need nouveau_vieux_dri.so, which seems to have been
removed from the maverick repositories before final release, but I got
it from the xorg-edgers ppa maverick repository. It's in the libgl1
-mesa-dri package (not the experimental package). All I did was add the
repository, update the package, shutdown the power and reboot.

In order to determine whether you need the nouveau_dri or the
nouveau_vieux_dri driver, consult the table at:
http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames

The patch also appears to be working for me.

The steps I used were:
sudo apt-get source xserver-xorg-core

cd xorg-server-1.9.0

# edited Xext/panoramiXprocs.c

#install debuild
apt-get install devscripts

# installed dependencies
sudo apt-get build-dep xserver-xorg-core

# uninstall nvidia's provided binary driver (from their website)
sudo nvidia-uninstall (didn't need to kill X after this)

#build the DEB packages
debuild -us -uc -i

cd ..

#install modified xorg-core
dpkg -i xserver-xorg-core_1.9.0-0ubuntu7_amd64.deb

# reboot

# reinstall NVidia binary driver
sudo sh ./NVidia

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 665623] [NEW] Xorg crash shortly after resume from hibernate

2010-10-23 Thread Luke Schlather
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

On the Dell Mini 1012, Xorg has consistent crashes.

It's happened every single time I've resumed from hibernate. Usually,
whenever I have to reboot, I reboot and then force a crash by opening a
lot of different pages in Firefox. When I've tried I've always forced a
crash within 5 minutes, and when I haven't tried it has invariably
crashed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 665646] [NEW] Boot quits, sends the monitor into powersave

2010-10-23 Thread martinba
Public bug reported:

Upon starting, the computer (a Dell desktop which has been through
several upgrades) stops booting, two lines after loading the crash
kernel. The screen goes dark and then the monitor into power save mode.
The only way to complete the boot is by doing it through the recovery
version of thekernel (2.6.35.22), using the low graphics mode. There
appears to be no way to get X and NVidia on the same page.

I don't understand the meaning of the above change on 10-19. Does it
mean that the original Ubuntu release does work with nvidia-173, that
there is a modified version which works with nvidia-173, or that there
is a different bug for the nvidia-173 problems?

At https://bugs.launchpad.net/udev/+bug/637208 someone has posted a

You can solve the problem by typing this: What you see is my output, so
change the 9 before Device Enabled to the ID of the Seccond detected
A4TECH USB Device of your output for xinput --list

 $ xinput --list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2[master pointer (3)]

2010-10-23 Thread Trystan
Manually updating x11-common to x11-common_7.5+6ubuntu3_all.deb prior to
the upgrade, as suggested by mafrasi2, resolved the problem for me.
Uninstalling x11-common seems to be a risky workaround. That's the X11
core. I would think it would bork dependency calculations for the
upgrade pretty bad if it were removed...but I'm not a distro dev.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 665711] [NEW] rendering bugs with xserver-xorg-video-intel

2010-10-23 Thread nagi...@nagilum.org
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

This is for Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop i386.
When typing in an xterm I get artifacts making it hard to read what you type.
When I switch to another window and then back the errors are corrected but when
I continue typing new errors show where new characters are printed.
Since gnome-screenshot crashes when I try to snapshot such a window I can't
provide a snapshot. (it works fine with other windows).
This is a Compaq 6510b Laptop with (from lspci):
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Memory
Controller Hub (rev 0c)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 0c)
The bug can be reproduced by booting the install disk (i386) and lunching an
xterm.
The errors don't show up in other terminal emulators I tested.

 Importance: Undecided

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 648165] [NEW] video on Desktop computer crash

2010-10-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

When trying out the NEW 10.version ( same with both 10.04 and 10.10 ) I
get a install screen but there is NO video settings for low video and I
have a PCI Express Nivida video card with 512 megs DDR2 memory and where
it would be doing something . . I only get a white screen with small
color dots and NO MOUSE or any text ( also using a 20 inch flat panel
monitor ) . . On 9.04 and 9.10 there is a LOW VIDEO install so it can be
installed and then switch to the Nivida driver . . or leave it as the
low video driver and since this is being installed on the DESKTOP and it
will not install I can hit enter an Escape and nothing Happens . . I
can't send anything but a description via this laptop ( running 9.10 )

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 621432] Re: Touchpad speed asymetrical (horizontal faster than vertical)

2010-10-23 Thread Brian Marshall
This is still a problem with the latest maverick for me. I noticed it
when attaching an external monitor to my laptop, which more than doubled
the horizontal screen resolution without increasing the vertical
resolution that much. It made the touchpad incredibly unwieldy.

Any update on the progress for this bug?
