[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 725600] Re: nvidia EDID issue, wrong resolution selected

2011-03-02 Thread Alan Pope
The only hardware between the card and the monitor is the little dongle
that converts DVI to VGA. These have always been connected to the card.

I was previously running okay with nouveau, and yes, had both displays
at 1680x1050.

Yes, I switch on twinview in nvidia-settings.

I have now booted with only one display connected. I have attached my
Xorg.0.log

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Driver crash during recovery boot and in normal boot

2011-03-02 Thread afoglia
How do I install the old versions? I tried installing
6.13.2+git20110124.fadee040-0ubuntu4 and ...ubuntu3 but I got dpkg
dependency problems stating that they depend on xorg-video-abi-9.0.
apt-get can't find that package. (It can find xorg-video-abi-9, but
selects xserver-xorg-core instead, and that's at the newest version in
natty.)

I also tried the maverick version on that page (6.13.1-1ubuntu5) and
again, dpkg has dependency issues, this time the required package is
xorg-video-abi-8.0, and that this version of xserver-xorg-
video-(ati|radeon) provides xserver-xorg-video-8 which xserver-xorg-core
breaks.

If this helps, I did not have these problems under maverick, and while I
had minor problems in natty a few weeks ago, they got noticeably,
drastically worse when the 6.14 drivers were released.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 725434] Re: nvidia-current causes a significant 'across the board' memory use increase

2011-03-02 Thread Doug McMahon
>If you uninstall nvidia and go back to nouveau, does the memory go
back down to the low levels?

Yes - the 2 mesa3d "1GB" logs attached are reflective of both prior to
installing nvidia-current and removing nvidia-current and returning to
mesa3d drivers (the "mesa3d_1GB log orig. attached to report itself

(On my 1GB machine have returned to mesa3d for the moment and all is
well in these regards

> Do you happen to know if this is a regression from the previous
-nvidia (from the xserver 1.9 days)?

I'm fairly sure that use at boot was normal then, though to maintain
testing 'integrity', I updated X when it came so can't say 'for sure'

If helpful I can install an earlier .iso, revert X if need be and install prior
 nvidia-current from the archive.
(could also try the current nvidia-current if it accepts the 1.9 X, thought I
saw mention that it could

The other possibility is I'd assume 1 more nvidia-current upgrade, could
test that. (latest 270.30 +

This is now assigned to kernel, so I suspect it will get more attention if
the comments also go into the linked kernel bug. Nobody seems to be
looking here any more.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 726902] Re: Loss of vsync when using Metacity.

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Interesting. A few random troubleshooting ideas. Try moving aside your
.drirc. Run a video player with its --debug option and look through its
output for any noteworthy error messages. I notice a fb tiling warning
in your Xorg.0.log. Do a 'tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log' in a console
window and then reproduce the issue and see if any messages get printed
in the log.

I assume by the title that you also tested with compiz running and found
it did not happen in that case? If so, you could also try comparing
dmesg, Xorg.0.log, etc. for the two cases and look for differences. (my
guess would be vblank syncing is set differently.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 726892] Re: screen split in half when in unity and I plug in a external monitor

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Yeah, I've reproduced this myself. It seems to not be X but rather the
compiz/unity autoconfiguration logic for multi-head. I think it's a
known issue. Bumping over to unity.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727382] Re: Unable to correctly display Image on 24" External Monitor

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Can you reproduce this with "Classic Desktop" and "Classic Desktop (no
effects)"? From your description it sounds similar to what I see when
trying to use unity on multi-head systems, so I'm wondering if it's
that.

If it does reproduce with Classic Desktop and no compiz, and you still
suspect -intel, then try seeing if downgrading to an earlier -intel
makes it go away. .debs can be gotten from Launchpad here:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
ati/+publishinghistory

just click the version you want to test, and then click the architecture
under build (amd64 in your case) and snag the .deb file. If you can
narrow in on exactly what version the regression started at, that'd be a
huge help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727457] Re: natty won't boot with strange xorg failure

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
I think I agree with Timo it sounds like a corruption when upgrading,
not an X-specific bug. If you can get steps to reproduce the issue you
could have the apt guys take a look but I don't think there's anything
we need to do particularly on the -synaptics side.

I see this is a fresh install; is this a new system or have you had

the black blinks then too? Had you been running natty prior to this

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 726179] Re: stuttery adobe flash chromium video playback

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, probably best if this bug report be looked at as a flash issue
first, before examining it as a driver bug. For me flash video has been
working ok, well no worse than it usually is.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 728146] [NEW] Possible xorg component upgrade incorrect

2011-03-02 Thread rabidpenguin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Not sure which component, but on my most recent update, a new config
file appears (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) with only the contents 'Section
"ServerLayout"', breaking the Xorg server on my system. Moving the file
out of the way fixed the issue.

I have the very same problem in my confing: running ubuntu 10.10, with
kde and catalyst 11.2. I have a laptop with a LVDS screen of 1366x768
with a CTR screen of 1280x1024 on the right side. On the CTR screen, on
the left side i have two colums of pixels repeated from the rightmost

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727112] Re: nvidia-current does not detect hardware capabilities correctly

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Can you try removing your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and see if the automatic
configuration works better?

Also, test out running Classic Desktop (No effects). If that works,
then I wonder if its just a max texture size limitation of the hardware.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 725434] Re: nvidia-current causes a significant 'across the board' memory use increase

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Doug,

Thanks for reproducing the issue on two computers. I could understand
the X process consuming more memory but it's a bit weird that even
client apps take more memory.

Do you happen to know if this is a regression from the previous -nvidia
(from the xserver 1.9 days)?

If you uninstall nvidia and go back to nouveau, does the memory go back
down to the low levels?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 726692] Re: Screen backlight adjustment stopped working on MacBook Pro 5, 4 and other hardware

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Maybe this is an -nvidia bug, but if so there's not much we can do about
it at the distro level. So I think this would be better to be reviewed
by the g-p-m guys first.

If it does turn out to be something to do with -nvidia particularly, it
should be reported upstream - see

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 725600] Re: nvidia EDID issue, wrong resolution selected

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Yeah looks like it's definitely unhappy about your monitors' EDIDs. You
don't have any adapters or other hardware connected between the computer
and the monitors do you?

I take it you were running nouveau previously, and was able to correctly
configure to 1680x1050 via gnome-display-properties?

I assume you're using TwinView to do the dual head action, which
presumably depends on EDID being available and accurate, so that's
probably why it lets you change up to 1366x768.

If you boot with only one of the viewsonics (and no TwinView), does the
same issue occur?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 723002] Re: External monitor not working properly

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, I'm having trouble picturing what you're describing - any chance
you could take a photo of the screens when they're displaying the
problem and attach it here?

Also, the logs you filed appear to be taken when the monitor was not
connected. Can you connect it and reproduce the issue, and then run
'apport-collect 723002' to add log files from the broken case to this
bug report? (It's hard debugging these issues without seeing the logs
and error messages when it's broken). Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 725580] Re: black screen on boot on radeon 9200

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Sergey "Shnatsel" Davidoff,
radeontool can be used to assist in debugging this issue. To install it from
the command line, use this command:

sudo apt-get install radeontool

After installing it, you run it like this:

radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_good.txt
radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_broke.txt

Run it two times. Once when you have a working screen (for any driver),
and once in the broken case (either from the tty console or logged into
the sick box remotely). Attach both of those to this bug report, and we
can then forward this issue upstream. Thanks ahead of time!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 726142] Re: Wacom tablet mouse does not work properly when monitor set to vertical resolution

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Is the issue simply that the input movement didn't rotate with the
screen? I.e. you push mouse up/down and instead it goes left/right.

If that's the case, try using xinput to rotate the input too. Here's a
reasonably easy to follow blog post on how to do this:

https://caurea.org/2009/11/05/xinput-the-new-xsetwacom/

If that works, I think we may be able to quirk the software to do this
automatically for your hardware.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Driver crash during recovery boot and in normal boot

2011-03-02 Thread Vangel Ajanovski
In my situation this is something I found in the logs.
I analyzed the logs and compared it to a normal log and besides the similar
stack dump I see one significant difference in the problematic log is this:

[drm] radeon: 3584M of VRAM memory ready
[drm] radeon: 512M of GTT memory ready.

whereas in the normal log:
[drm] radeon: 512M of VRAM memory ready
[drm] radeon: 512M of GTT memory ready.

The laptop has only 4GB RAM and ATI is supposed to have only 512MB.

I have attached the relevant part of the log

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Driver crash during recovery boot and in normal boot

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi afoglia,

Does it resolve if you downgrade to an older version of -ati?

You can get older .deb files of the driver from Launchpad here:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
ati/+publishinghistory

Click on the link under Version of the version you want to test, then
under Builds click the link for your hardware architecture, then grab
the -ati and -radeon .debs and install them.

If that doesn't do it, then next guess would be you are having a kernel
issue - if you still have a prior kernel you can try booting it (hold
down the left shift key during boot to bring up the menu.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 728101] [NEW] Closing laptop lid causes screen to freeze

2011-03-02 Thread Rod Davis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

This is related to another but I filed, but I wanted debug information
to be preserved. As I said in bug #726918, whenever I leave my laptop
lid closed for a long enough period of time and power manager settings
kick in, the screen locks up, preventing the cursor that I can still
move from interacting with any screen elements (and the clock freezes,
too.) Now, it appears even leaving the lid left down for a few minutes
triggers this issue. Anyways, I hope the extra debug info helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 712173] Re: ubuntu desktop from usb stick freezes when the display switch from plymouth to X

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Alright, well so far it isn't sounding like an X bug. Perhaps an error
in plymouth, or even could be kernel issues. Closing the X task, and
leaving the plymouth task open for further investigation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 718032] Re: Flash fullscreen mode can cause X to freeze the display

2011-03-02 Thread Christian Göbel
I have exactly the same problem with Ubuntu 10.10 and Firefox - all updates
included.
This is a Samsung Notebook with intel Centrino and i915 hardware.
The problem appears with fullscreen Flash videos: Screen is not updated
anymore, anything else seems to work (sound, Esc).
The strange thing is that on a fresh install (Oktober 2010) the problem did not
always appear. But recently this issue appears always.
Maybe this is related to recent updates of Flash or intel-drivers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 720303] Re: system flickrs from the begning

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Hussain, how has the 2.6.38-4 kernel been holding up?

It sounds like this is a regression in the kernel drm code.

If the issue is still occurring with the latest kernel, then avivotool
can be used to assist in debugging this issue. avivotool is provided
with the radeontool package, so to install it run:

sudo apt-get install radeontool

After installing it, you run it like this:

avivotool regs all > regdump_good.txt
avivotool regs all > regdump_broke.txt

Run it two times. Once when you have a working screen (for any kernel),
and once in the broken case (either from the tty console or logged into
the sick box remotely). Attach both of those to this bug report, and we
can then forward this issue upstream. Thanks ahead of time!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 704279] Re: xorg warn about missing fonts 75dpi

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
It looks like the place this would need fixed is in the configure flags
in debian/rules:

confflags_main = \

--with-default-font-path="/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc,/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic,/usr/share/fonts/X11/100\
dpi/:unscaled,/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/:unscaled,/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1,/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi,/usr/sha\
re/fonts/X11/75dpi,/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType,built-ins" \

However, if I understand correctly, removing the 75dpi and 100dpi paths
from this flag would result in the packages not working if someone chose
to manually install them. So, despite the ugliness of the warnings I
think we gotta keep these paths there until the fonts are removed from
universe entirely.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 716613] Re: Unneeded warning/error in Xorg.0.log about missing fglrx

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hrm. I dug into the source code on this one, but there really isn't a
clean way to suppress the error message for specific kinds of drivers,
since the error message comes from general purpose module loading logic.
I find the extraneous error annoying but it's not worth the trouble to
suppress.

Okie dokie, tracked it down to libxkbcommon (didn't realize that'd load
up on its own), which is not installed by default and still early enough
on in development that this error message is not worth silencing.

"Unable to find a synaptics device." is just a warning message in
-synaptics, easily quelled.

The other error messages I still haven't tracked down.

I also have the same problem, sometimes it takes just 1-2 resets to be
able to boot, and now i reseted the computer 8 times (2 with full power
off) and it finally booted. I think that it fails right before showing
the Ubuntu logo and progress bar when switching from console to graphics
mode.

My computer is HP Pavilion dm4t-1100 wit ATI 5470HD and Intel.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 645057] Re: [arrandale] GPU lockup (IPEHR: 0x01800002)

2011-03-02 Thread JasonH
I'm still seeing oddball hangs of the X server which do not hang the
system. However, I'm not sure how to capture the situation since nothing
goes to the logs. I just get messages about the GPU in the tty I'm using to
shut the box down. This differs from the bug I wrote up (644680), but I've
not found a way to recreate and provide you guys any useful data. If you
have any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Thanks,
Jason
