Lol, it’s 2011, and X still can’t do this. *facepalm*
Even Windows 2000 could do this, over, you guessed it, 11 years ago.

Thanks so much for your valuable contribution to this bug report.

Guys, since I get X for free, I’m not expecting anything, and think it’s
really nice of you to do this work. But I’m not talking about
implementing some colorful clickables or display bling. I’m talking
about one of the most basic features. So basic it has its own ISO
standard. And also about 50 lines of code. Max.

What I meant to say is, that if it were my code, and yes I am a
professional programmer for 20 years now, I would be ashamed of
overlooking something like this. It’s a thing of pride. Maybe because I
see it as more fundamental than you.

I would also love to submit a patch. If the thing weren’t written in that
horrible horrible excuse of a programming language called C. I know lots of
languages, including Haskell (my favorite and main languages), but I have no
intention in torturing myself with C-like languages.
Maybe if the thing was written in Haskell or OCaml, there would be more free
time…

Whatever. Maybe I’ll save 50€ and send them to you to implement it. 1€ a
line should be enough, no? ;)

Well, either we are rubbish programmers with no pride, or are simply too

So what you're saying is that you're not going to help, but instead sit

(Oh, and Windows 2000 may have had Ctrl+Shift+[codepoint] for generating

2011-11-24 Thread Freedesktop-org
Daniel, Jeremy, please don't feed a possible troll. Just take his badly-
worded comment as another ++ vote for the feature and be done with it.
It would be a shame if this feature were ignored due to a single troll's
heckling.

In fact, let's look at it another way. I am willing to learn C and fix
this issue if a current X dev will mentor me. I'm serious. Of course it
would take _more_ time to fix the bug this way, but then X gains another
enthusiastic developer. I've done a simple C course in university and I
know a bit of PHP and Java. Are there any X devs who would mentor me
through this bug?

Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 531208]

2011-11-24 Thread Navid-zamani
(In reply to comment #11)

I look forward to your 50-line patch then.
As I said, I have no intention in learning a language as bad as C. I’d rather
rewrite the whole thing in a modern language. And I’d like even more to have
someone else do it, while I do some other contribution in return. How about
that? :)

Well, either we are rubbish programmers with no pride, or are simply too
busy with the other 2.532 million (I just checked) lines of code that X
 has.
So you’re essentially suggesting that it’s just extremely bloated? ^^
But hey, there doesn’t have to be a “or”. Usually the latter comes from the
former. ;)

So what you're saying is that you're not going to help, but instead sit
here banging on about pride and how Windows 2000 did it and it's really
 easy. Helpful!
No, (Windows * still sucked). I was saying:

Maybe I’ll save 50€ and send them to you to implement it. 1€ a line
 should be enough, no? ;)

But I already see where this is going: Straw man arguments: First you
deliberately misinterpret my statements, and then you call me an idiot
because of them. Sorry mate, that won’t work. ^^

(In reply to comment #12)

Hey Navid, have you learned C yet?
Maybe the Navid in your delusional parallel world where I didn’t say I despised
C did.
Why don’t you check?

In all honesty, I don't expect this to be 50 lines, and I don't expect
it to be popular enough to demand attention over higher priority
issues.

Well, if it doesn’t take 50 lines, something is deeply wrong with the
code. Then again it’s C and it’s 2.532 million lines of it, so that
kinda answers that. ^^

PROTIP: Quick sort in Haskell:

  qsort (x:xs) = qsort [ i | i - xs, i  x ] ++ [x] ++ qsort [ i | i - xs, i
= x ]
  qsort [] = []

50 lines? Hell yeah! ^^

I have no interest in the typical Internet dicks calling everyone who isn’t
fitting their mind a “troll”. So you can fail with your archaic C, bloat, weird
priorities and distorted perception until the end of time.
Actually it’s a good thing, because the more you’re ignorant of the unfolding
reality, the more those who don’t gain an edge over you. So, hey… in a way
you’re still helping me. Thanks!
And good bye. ^^

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 531208]

2011-11-24 Thread Shriramana Sharma
Navid, please cease and desist from making unhelpful comments. I myself
would like to see this bug fixed soon, and I also do not have enough
C-knowledge to contribute a patch, and I do occasionally post hello can
anybody please fix this bug kind of comments to bug reports, but at
least I try to stay polite and *request* something of the developers who
obviously have a particular skill which I don't. It is my experience
that more often than not, developers are quite polite and at least
explain why the bug can't be fixed soon or something like that.

Now my polite request: can any of the kind developers fix this bug
please? I'm sure with your skills it would be a simple job if someone
just allocated a small amount of time to it?

After upgrading my Kubuntu system to Oneiric, the ibus stopped working
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/854333) so I'm falling back to
XIM which IMHO is much cleaner even if not context-sensitive. So I would
really like to see this soon. Thanks! :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 531208]

2011-11-24 Thread Jeremy Huddleston
Dotan,

I'd love to help you learn C. My advise to you is to check out this course at
UC Berkeley designed to teach C to students who already know how to program in
another language:
http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~selfpace/class/cs9c

Most of the materials are available online. You just need to buy or borrow the
book, and you don't have access to the SPC tutors and obviously don't get a
grade or course credit. I used to tutor the course back in the day, so I'd
love to help you out if that means we'd have another X11 contributor.

But let's take this offline for now... just send me an email when you want to
get started and need some help/questions.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 365943]

2011-11-24 Thread Yan Li
Created attachment 40902
Add JumpyCursorThreshold option patch v5

For those touchpads that don't support multi-finger or sending correct
finger width, the jumpy cursor problem is still there. One notable
example is the ClickPad found on Lenovo S10-3t whose ClickPad suffers
from this jumpy cursor problem very severely, because its buttons also
have sensible surface thus every time you click a button without lifting
another finger from the pad, such as when trying to drag a window or
select text, the cursor jumps, and renders the whole touchpad nigh
unusable.

(if you are wondering why Synaptics driver doesn't enable ClickPad mode
and limit the touch area thus ignore ABS sent from button area, it's
because those ClickPads send out BTN_LEFT and BTN_RIGHT just as normal
touchpads so they don't trigger the ClickPad mode, which is designed for
ClickPads that never send BTN_RIGHT)

Therefore Alberto Milone's JumpyCursorThreshold option patch is still
needed, which is the best solution I've seen so far. I've attached the
new patch I ported to head. I've tested it in MeeGo and it works very
well (with Threshold set to 250).

  dpyPriv-driDisplay = driCreateDisplay(dpy);
   }
   if (glx_direct)
  dpyPriv-driswDisplay = driswCreateDisplay(dpy);
---

Then in AllocAndFetchScreenConfigs(), we get our visuals and fbconfigs via:
  getVisualConfigs(dpy, priv, i);
  getFBConfigs(dpy, priv, i);

but then they get thrashed by:
  if (psc-driScreen == NULL  priv-driswDisplay)
 psc-driScreen = (*priv-driswDisplay-createScreen) (psc, i, priv);

which is driCreateScreen in drisw_glx.c and ends up doing:
   psc-configs = driConvertConfigs(psc-core, psc-configs, driver_configs);

which results in psc-configs being set to NULL which is causing
GetGLXPrivScreenConfig to return GLX_BAD_VISUAL and thus causing glxinfo
to bail.

As for driConvertConfigs, it should not return NULL normally. It
returns NULL when the original psc-configs and driver_configs have no
config in common. Can you check what's in the original psc-configs?

You miss the point. This isn't about glxinfo, this is about *ALL* glx

You said, glxinfo creates a context that allows direct rendering ...
but direct rendering is not available because the client is remote from
the server. In older versions of mesa (6.5 for sure, not sure through
when), it would detect when remote and use indirect. This behavior
seems to have reverted.

Now, when remote, it tries to use drisw, but it results in an empty set
of visuals and fbconfigs as described by the codepath in my initial
report.

I see your point. I guess the old behavior is simply because there was
no swrast_dri.

As for swrast_dri, it has _direct_ access to the (pure software) OpenGL
pipelines, and is thus chosen for direct rendering. The fact that
xserver is remote is not taken into consideration. I am not sure which
behavior is desired/correct though. Other people should have better
answer than me.

The empty visual/fbconfig list you saw might be some other bug. That's
why I would like to know the original value of psc-configs. I can run
glxgears from a remote machine under ssh -X just fine, and it uses
swrast_dri. My remote machine runs mesa 7.5.1.

Here's glxinfo's output when run as a local client.

numvisuals was 800 before calling into drisw to prune them, and it looks

[Problem]
When system is under load, the graphics experience periodic glitches.

Perhaps under the load of oneiric's Unity3D the driver isn't able to
keep up with the graphics loads, and isn't able to fill the pipe 100% of
the time? How could that be proved/disproved (or are we way off base?)

[Original Description]
I have a Lenovo X200 laptop, and I run Unity 3D. Every so often, since oneiric,
my screen jitters. That is, it seems to jump up and down like it has a nervous
twitch. I can't reproduce it exactly, but it seems more likely to happen when
my system is under load.

I've monitored .xsession-errors when the twitch happens, and nothing is
dumped there. I've also checked /var/crash/, but none of the crashes
there have times that match the twitch.

Chris Halse Rogers suggested trying, echo 0
/sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll, but that doesn't seem to
correct the problem.

In addition, unity_support_test crashed while filing this bug.

On the top left corner of the touchpad there is an small area (marked with a

This happens at least in Ubuntu 64-bits and seems somehow related to
compiz.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 378794]

2011-11-24 Thread Mathias-bavay
As of Today, with all latest updates from Ubuntu 11.10, that is:
Xorg 7.6, video-intel 2.17 on a 3.0.0 kernel, on a i915M (pentium M CPU), the
bug is still here... Some portions of the screen are not refreshed, some menus
are not refreshed (the K menu is never correctly displayed, one has to wave the
mouse pointer up and down to show it), KDE4 notifications are usually only
partially displayed, and the whole background sometimes shows stripes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 412688]

2011-11-24 Thread Jeremy Huddleston
Does this issue occur with the preferred ati driver (xf86-vide-ati)? If
so, please move this to the Driver/Radeon component.

Development of radeonhd has pretty much halted and development focus is
on the ati driver. Please see http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonhd

If the issue does not exist in the ati driver (or if there is no
response to this message), this bug will be closed as WONTFIX unless
someone contributes a patch.

[Original Description]
This happens when I play the game Minecraft in 11.10 Oneiric. To be honest, I
don't know if it is my video card, Java, or my processor that is the problem.
When I run Minecraft, Java usually crashes after a few minutes. And not just
Java, it usually beings down a few other processes with it. I could run this
fine in 11.04. After Java crashed this time, Apport had me report this bug.
Also, after Java crashed this time, Unity also crashed, so I currently have no
panels or window decorations. I'll reboot and try to crash it all again, and
see if I can get some more useful information. All I know is that Java
consistently crashes in Oneiric while running Minecraft on my system, and
almost always causes more problems when it crashes.

GPU lockup on Sandybridge. User had 10+ applications open, but don't know if
that was involved in the cause.  User doesn't think any of the apps were 3D;
perhaps the crash was triggered by compiz itself?

Look like I've forgot for years to report upstream. Sorry :(

Used default of the intel driver:

when booting a laptop with an external monitor connected, the
default is mirror mode with a resolution that is 'biggest' one
supported by _both_ monitors. (Compare:
http://keithp.com/blogs/X_output_status_july_2008/)

Problem:

The visual impression is often (always in my experience) very bad:

 * external monitor often do not support the naive resolution of the laptop
   display
 * Even worse: first common resolution supported by both monitors has not
the same aspect ratio as the displays

Suggested solution for same aspect ratio:

...much better would be: If both monitors have the same aspect ratio (e.g.
16:10 or 4:3) choose the smaller resolution as the common base and scale to the
size bigger monitor. (Because only one monitor needs scaling it should even save
tons of GPU cycles.

With the proposed algorithm, one output runs with the 'perfect' native
resolution and only one is transformed, with taspect ratio is presered!
Currently base resolution is: lower than min. of both display, _both_
are transformed, aspect ratio is not kept.

At https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/437173 you can find lots of xorg.log
and xrandr output. Lemme know if you need more other input.

Thx,
Achim

It would be handy to be able to create temporary accounts using accounts
service, useful for things like guest logins from a display manager.

LightDM currently does this (with code modified from an Ubuntu patch to
GDM) [1] [2]. The behaviour is basically:

1. Something requests a guest account
2. A new account is created with a random username guest-XX
3. Some OS dependant code is run to lock the account down
4. The username is returned
5. The account can be deleted using the username

Are there any plans for this in accounts service? If not, I'll start
working on a patch.

Hey Robert,

if you want to work on something like this, that would be great.
Some things to consider:

- it is probably a good idea to have an IsGuestAccount? method on the
user object, so we can eg. do the right thing in the user panel

- should it be possible to turn a guest account into a 'real' account ?

- probably needs to be possible to disable guest account creation

The converting a guest account to a real account is an interesting idea

Agree with the other points.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 876762] Re: KDE crashes at login with desktop effects enabled

The work-around described in #7 #4 of course only works if

- you do not switch between DRI modes (eg. ALT-SHIFT-F12)
- you do not have power save enabled to alter desktop effects

otherwise you will lose any unsaved work when you detach you power cord.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755791] Re: [RS690M] No 3d acceleration in Radeon X1200 with new Gallium r300 / 3d drivers in 11.04 (Needs kernel quirk)

2011-11-24 Thread Ian McMichael
Having upgraded to the 3.0.0-13-generic #22-Ubuntu kernel (without the
RS690M patch) after the security release a couple of days ago, I realise
that there is really no improvement on my HP Compaq 6715b whether I run
Alex's patch or not. The graphics are very lagged in both Unity 3D and
2D.

For an example of this, pull down the far-right (what is the name for
that, settings?) from the top bar and move your mouse pointer up and
down over the menu items. The orange highlight bar lags substantially
behind the mouse pointer position. The same can be observed by picking
a window up by its title bar and dragging it around the workspace. The
mouse pointer becomes more and more detached from the title bar of the
window as you drag and the window lags behind.

Hopefully this explains the usability impact of this bug? If there's
any more technical data I can collect from my particular RS690M
installation that would help, please just ask?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 805586] Re: i915 Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung

2011-11-24 Thread HAL 9000
I'm having the same problem on oneiric. The screen randomly freezes for
a few seconds (the mouse still moves, but everything else is dead), then
everything turns black for a second, and then it all goes back to
normal. Afterwards, I find this in my syslog:

[ 200.319085] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed...

The enabling SSC on PCH-error also appears randomly from time to time,
but I don't notice it otherwise.

Also, it only seems to occur when I have my second screen connected.

Before there was code made to detect the GPIO mode and not do any DDC
queries if it is in serial port mode. But while that checking still
exists and the fact that it is in UART mode gets reported in Xorg.0.log,
DDC calls are still made through RANDR impementation vfunc regardless of
that, and Xorg crashes on the results that gets to in UART mode.

This bug is the primary reason 2.11 is not packaged in Gentoo Linux yet,
as it breaks things for my own geode platform development :(

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 890890] Re: Corruption of images in Java applets after update to Oneiric

2011-11-24 Thread DJ
Update: I reinstalled Ubuntu, and switched to 32 bit. The problem is
gone now. I figured it out by running both 32 bit and 64 bit off a flash
drive, and only the 64 bit version had the problem. However, it's not a
64 bit Java issue, as my other machine is 64 bit and has no problems. So
it's probably the 64 bit graphics driver. In general, I've found the
intel graphics to work much better with Unity than others, so this is a
surprise. The problem may have been present in 11.04 as well, since my
previous install was 32 bit.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2011-11-24 Thread Dave Vree
Using the ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates ppa I was able to try out the 290.10
driver. Fedora users have reported success with this driver:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2504236

However, I cannot even start X with this driver. Arch users have also
reported this problem with 290.10. Looking at the Xorg.0.log file I
see:

[15.583] (--) NVIDIA(0): Connected display device(s) on GeForce Go 7400 at
PCI:1:0:0
[15.583] (--) NVIDIA(0): none
[15.583] (EE) NVIDIA(0): No display devices found for this X screen.
[16.020] (II) UnloadModule: nvidia
[16.020] (II) Unloading nvidia
[16.020] (II) UnloadModule: wfb
[16.020] (II) Unloading wfb
[16.020] (II) UnloadModule: fb
[16.020] (II) Unloading fb
[16.020] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
[16.020]
Fatal server error:
[16.020] no screens found

Which means that with this driver, the adapter cannot detect me internal laptop
display. Its been reported already here:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=168305

Hope this information helps us get closer to solution. As most people
here already know, this bug not only keeps Unity 3D from being used but
also the new Gnome3 shell as well. Until this gets fixed our only
Desktop solution is Unity 2D.

Thank you very much, Daniel.

These Compiz bugs exist together with the power regressionS in the
kernel for a over a year. Both affecting many Linux users out there.
Stupidity or sabotage. Sabotage unlikely? Well, it leaves us we the
other option...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 805416] Re: Colour not correct in X display via HDMI output on Intel 82G35 Express

2011-11-24 Thread Scott Bambrough
This bug can probably be closed. The monitor in question died, and I
since upgraded to Oneiric and replaced the monitor with another. I have
a dual screen setup with two Acer monitors connected to the same video
outputs and everything seems to be working fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 847038] Re: [oneiric] backlight always stays on

2011-11-24 Thread Nishant
Closing the lid does shut the display off completely, so I think the
issue is in the method used by the power manager to put the display to
sleep after idle.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 894600] [NEW] Xorg freeze with neauvou

2011-11-24 Thread Erik B. Andersen
Public bug reported:

The facts:
Xorg freezes.
No display corruption
Mouse moves but does not change like it should (for example when over text).
Alt+SysRQ+R, then Alt+SysRQ+K kills X and lets me log in again.
Happens only with Unity, not unaccelerated environments.
Using Neauvou driver on 11.10.
Wasn't a problem on Maverick.
Animations that should be smooth are jittery like showing the unity bar or
searching in Unity.

Not so sure, but think is true:
Seems to freeze with lots of text changes, especially in a terminal. Like
holding down backspace, moving cursor fast in nano. Or searching in Unity dash.
Also, dragging windows.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763005] Re: Compiz's Sync to Vblank makes display stutter/slow with some drivers (like fglrx)

2011-11-24 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I agree they're all terribly frustrating bugs, which is why I have been
working on fixes for them.

However it's not accurate to say they've been there for over a year. Bug
861061 and bug 880707 are definitely regressions which only exist in
ubuntu 11.10. And bug 888039 might be caused by one of those too. That
leaves only this bug 763005 which has definitely been a problem prior to
Ubuntu 11.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 894641] [NEW] [Maverick] Crash when unplugging/disconnecting external screen

2011-11-24 Thread Thomas Jacobsen
Public bug reported:

I have a Thinkpad T61 with a GMA950 intel graphics card. The bug occours
when having an external screen plugged in and wants to unplug it. If I
just pull the plug I am garanteed a black screen and there is nothing to
do than a hard shutdown. If I disconnects the external screen from the
Monitor menu, it only crashes 50% of the times.
