[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: Can't install ATI AMD proprietary drivers in Ubuntu 12.10

2012-10-20 Thread Pubudu Kodikara
From the page
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx. The
12.8 and the 12.9 beta drivers.

Today I did a clean install and then installed linux-source and
linux-headers-generic before installing fglrx-updates (according to
a recommendation made by an ubuntu forum user
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12305917postcount=11)). It also
gave the same results. The app port data were collected after this. But
today I didn't got the warning update-alternatives: warning: forcing
reinstallation of alternative /usr/lib/fglrx/ld.so.conf because link
group x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf is broken

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068411] Re: 1002:9712 fglrx driver doesn't recognize my ATI RS880M Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series

2012-10-20 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Andrey, regarding your comments
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1068411/comments/10
 :
According to the http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Hardware;

You realize that is the _Unofficial_ AMD Linux Community wiki, not
created by AMD, right? Naively, one would think a contradiction exists
between what the Unofficial AMD Linux Community wiki notes, and what AMD
says on it's own website, as previously mentioned. So, viewing the diff
from when the information you quoted was added
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php?title=Hardwareaction=historysubmitdiff=8587oldid=8435
, some unidentifiable user http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/User:Dtl131
added it.

Unless AMD's website, or an AMD representative notes how a card is or is
not supported, the information you are quoting is, at best, conjecture.

Despite this, because this is a development bug report, not a discussion forum,
and you are not the original reporter, please refrain from further commenting
in this report. For more on this, please see the Ubuntu Bug Control and Ubuntu
Bug Squad article:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/BestPractices#X.2BAC8-Reporting.Focus_on_One_Issue

and Ubuntu Community article:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: Can't install ATI AMD proprietary drivers in Ubuntu 12.10

2012-10-20 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Pubudu Kodikara, thank you for noting which upstream drivers you tested
already. Regarding your comments
https://bugs.launchpad.net/fglrx/+bug/1068661/comments/5 :
Today I did a clean install and then installed linux-source and
linux-headers-generic before installing fglrx-updates (according to a
recommendation made by an ubuntu forum user
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12305917postcount=11)). It also gave
the same results. The app port data were collected after this. But today I
didn't got the warning update-alternatives: warning: forcing reinstallation
of alternative /usr/lib/fglrx/ld.so.conf because link group
x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf is broken

Could you please post the new install log that does not have the
warning?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069031] [NEW] intel gma3600: X unable to start

2012-10-20 Thread Guy Coates
Public bug reported:

X is unable to start on a Acer AOD270 intel atom netbook with a gma3600
chipset when the gma500_gfx kernel driver is loaded.

(xorg.0.log)

[41.352] (EE) intel(0): [drm] Failed to detect GEM. Kernel 2.6.28 required.
[41.352] (EE) intel(0): Failed to become DRM master.
[41.352] (II) UnloadModule: intel
[41.353] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
[41.353] Fatal server error:

Workaround is to blacklist the gma500_glx module, which allows X to start by
falling back to the vesa FB driver.

Applying the patch described here fixes the problem without the need to
blacklist.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069047] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2012-10-20 Thread Blempis
Public bug reported:

First of all, sorry that the given information is little bit
missleading, but I didn't have a change to report properly because
several reasons.

However, I still believe I can give you enough information what it the problem,
why it is crucial to fix it and what kind of users fill encounter this problem
so that you can give them a out of box user experience.

So, the main problem at hand is as follows:

It is not possible to install or upgrade on this system you collected
information from This includes upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04 and the
fresh installation of 12.04 , 12.04.1 and 12.10. (Well, perhaps one
could say that upgrade succeeded, but the new system got frozen.)
OpenSuse 12.2 installed succesfully but only the offered safe mode
worked.

One crucial thing to note is that this problem at hand is clearly
invisible to your current bug monitoring system/method. Launhcpad
involves more than 100 000 bugs so you have hard time even to follow it.
So, it seems that you don't get data when something goes terribly wrong
in upgrades and fresh installs, do you?

I do have a Android phone (Samsung Galaxy Gio) and I use it all the time
when connecting my desktop to internet. I don't have any other device
modem what so ever for that purpose. I don't know if this relevant from
the point of solving this issue but considered it is worth reporting
separately.

The problem is related to Nvidia Gtx 580. Installing Ubuntu 12.10 leads to
crash. It happens when I try to select language. Then the system reports about
pfipo goes into loop trying to recover but failing and it gives some magnified
parts of the previous installing screen. Those parts are not in any order. The
screen is not readable and mouse hangs.

Solution?

Installing nvidia packets by apt would be fine but that option is not
available. It is possible to get the livemode if the preferred language
is not selected rather than just pressing enter. However, live mode is
not working while mouse is not responsing nor is keybord.

How the heck did I manage to install Ubuntu 12.04 to this darn machine?!

Well, after that explanation you and I share the most well deserved
feeling of ashame.

First I changed back my old work horse Gts 250 and installed the 12.04. Then I
installed offered drivers for that and rebooted. After that (as I rememer it
right) I downloaded drivers suitable for Gtx 580 and shut down the machine.
Removed Gts 250 and replaced the Gtx 580 to the system and the system finally
booted as it should.

Your part of solution:

Make sure that the command line is available even before Ubuntu desktops
starts up. Also make sure that the system can find internet and use apt-
sources even if there is no modem available. Some of us use Androids.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: Unity does not load after installing fglrx-installer

2012-10-20 Thread Pubudu Kodikara
After installing that older 12.4 driver (as I mentioned in the above
comment) I opened the AMD control panel (before rebooting. If I reboot,
i'll loose unity) and it gave me an error saying there's no AMD graphic
driver installed. (But note that it worked in Ubuntu 12.04) Attached a
screenshot of the error.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068411] Re: 1002:9712 fglrx driver doesn't recognize my ATI RS880M Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series

2012-10-20 Thread Emiliano
In response comment https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-
installer/+bug/1068411/comments/8.

As you said, my graphic cards is still supported by ATI driver 12.06
(8.97.100.3). There is a reference of it here:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Quantal_Installation_Guide.

(Link gattered from here: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu)

I followed the instructions there. Downloaded
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/legacy/amd-driver-
installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64.zip and did:

unzip to home directory
sudo sh ./amd-driver-installer-*.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/quantal
sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb
sudo aticonfig --initial -f

But, as soon I do dpkg -i fglrx*.deb, a error stops the installation. I
attached the error log.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1064329] Re: High CPU load (above 50%) on Xorg process when browsing low graphic intensive sites

2012-10-20 Thread Karl Frisk
I believe this is a problem that roots in unity, compiz and xorg working
together. ANY application that continously updates the screen causes
compiz AND xorg cpu usage to go up. Examples that trigger the problem
include HTML5-animated-websites, moving around terminal windows with the
mouse, the spectrum analyzer in audacious, and flash animations/videos.

On my machine (Thinkpad t430 with Intel i7 3520M and Intel HD 4000
graphics) the cpu usage in Precise was already much too high: After a
fresh boot open two terminals, start top in the one and keep moving
around the other one. Xorg and compiz together use 10-20% cpu.

In Quantal the same experiment results in 20-40% cpu usage. For nothing
but moving a small window around.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069082] [NEW] Display corruption (regression) on Intel HD 4000

2012-10-20 Thread Rob Hasselbaum
Public bug reported:

Around October 16, 2012, I received an update to a number of X11
packages from the ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates PPA. After rebooting, the
desktop showed artifacts/corruption after short periods of use and
performance was noticeably slower. Assuming I got burned by the PPA, I
decided to format and install Kubuntu 12.10. The live USB seemed to work
fine, but once the install was complete (and all updates applied), the
problem returned. Everything was working fine prior to that update, so
this seems to be a recent regression.

My video hardware is an Intel HD 4000 chipset on an HP Pavilion dv7t
Quad Edition laptop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069087] [NEW] twinkling black lines

2012-10-20 Thread Diego Zea
Public bug reported:

Black lines on the screen flickering/twinkling. Just at the time of
initiation before entering the session, I see a lot of these lines. Then
it stops and there is only one. This line never goes away during the
session. Rarely I can start without the lines appear. These began to
appear on October 18 this year, along with upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10
from Beta 2. When start in Windows 7 I have not this problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069088] [NEW] Dosemu fullscreen sessions corrupted under latest Nvidia dev release

2012-10-20 Thread ray field
Public bug reported:

The latest NVIDIA drivers, 304.60, which installed yesterday, break my
fullscreen Dosemu sessions. In Xdosemu previously, going fullscreen
resulted in a clean, genuine fullscreen session. With the latest
version, the text is squeezed inside of a black box, and often after
several minutes becomes completely corrupted.

This seems to be a tricky issue. Using the Additional Drivers tool under
Precise I had to revert all the way back to the 173 drivers to get
fullscreen Dosemu working properly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068877] Re: fglrx (not installed): fglrx kernel module failed to build

2012-10-20 Thread lien_meat
Sorry, I just thought maybe there was something we (the ubuntu
community) might be able to do to enable it to build properly without
AMD's intervention. I thought possibly a ppa or something could be put
together if ubuntu wasn't going to support these gpus via the
proprietary drivers that had ubuntu's support. I know it's not an
ubuntu bug, per-say, but making this easy would make a ton of people a
lot happier. :(

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068341] Re: nVidia proprietary drivers miss linux-headers-generic dependency

2012-10-20 Thread Doug McMahon
The user solution should be to install the meta package, not a specific
version. So this is better suggested
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic

This has become a major problem for users - A quick fix would be to adjust the
control file(s) for nvidia-* fglrx to only dep on linux-headers-generic
instead of the current
linux-headers-generic | linux-headers
Or have linux-headers-generic installed by default Bug 1068488

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763052] Re: Ubuntu can't boot on nvidia GeForce GT240 with nouveau drivers

2012-10-20 Thread Peter Wagner
Tried again the actual nouveau driver, with the same result: The screen
displyed only some relics of former activity, no work possible in Ubuntu.
REISUB properly restarts.
The worst: A restart into recovery mode freezes at the stage, where a selection
is expected (resume of boot, start in text mode etc.). No input is accepted,
REISUB shows no response.
I modified the grub booting line (pressing 'e') and replaced quit splash by
nomodeset and was able to enable the non-propriety driver again. Uff!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069194] [NEW] nouveau does not recognize my Samsung Syncmaster 226BW

2012-10-20 Thread Josy
Public bug reported:

Nouveau does recognize only the screen resolutions 1024 x 768 and 800
x 600 and this as laptop.

This might be a regresion of the following items:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/460510
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/462973

One other issue:
I have installed the propriatory nvidia driver, restarted the PC and all video
modes are recognized fine - includeing the name of the monitor.
Afterwards I have uninstalled the propriatory nvidia driver, however after PC
restart I have no longer gnome 3.x but the gnome 2.x fallback.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068897] Re: fglrx 2:9.000-0ubuntu3: fglrx kernel module failed to build

2012-10-20 Thread Dave Lentz
Using an older version of fglrx/Catalyst on Ubuntu 12.10 will not work
because the older version does not support recent kernels.

Do the following:
1) Completely remove old fglrx:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Precise_Installation_Guide#Removing_Catalyst.2Ffglrx
2) Restart
3) sudo apt-get install fglrx
4) Restart
5) Attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log to this bug report
6) Further describe the problem you're having with compiz

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068644] Re: After upgrading to 12.10, ubuntu runs in low graphics mode

2012-10-20 Thread Dave Lentz
fglrx will no longer work for your card. You must use the open-source radeon
driver (or use Ubuntu 12.04 if you need fglrx).
Make sure fglrx is purged:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Precise_Installation_Guide#Removing_Catalyst.2Ffglrx
Restart the system, and if errors still occur, attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068434] Re: updating to Quantal breaks the system with Radeon HD 4200

2012-10-20 Thread Dave Lentz
Marking Invalid. AMD has dropped the RadeonHD 4x00 series from fglrx
support. The last version of fglrx to support your card is 8.960 (and
this version will not work in Quantal/12.10).

You must use the open-source radeon (or go back to using precise/12.04
if you want to use Catalyst).

If you experience issues with the open-source driver, please file a new
bug. Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068434] Re: updating to Quantal breaks the system with Radeon HD 4200

2012-10-20 Thread skipper
Hey Dave,

Thanks for the answer! Now I can better phrase what the problem is.

I don't care too much about 3D (no gaming for instance) but I use unity.
If this was known before and going back to the open-source driver is an
option then why is it not done during the upgrade?

What happened here is that for my production machine I postponed the
upgrade until the release was done. I have a couple of other machines on
which I do alpha/beta testing and they all looked good. Unfortunately
none of them is an ATI machine.

So after the release I did the upgrade and all I got was just the cursor
after logging in. For many years I upgraded several machines, from
several ubuntu versions, but I 've never seen such a harsh failure
before. So maybe this is a bug for the upgrade process, which package is
that?

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is the preferred way to revert
back to the radeon driver? Or shall it be done through xorg.conf?

Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068434] Re: updating to Quantal breaks the system with Radeon HD 4200

2012-10-20 Thread Dave Lentz
Actually, you should probably remove xorg.conf completely, as it
shouldn't be needed for the open-source driver. See:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Quantal_Installation_Guide#Removing_Catalyst.2Ffglrx

When you upgrade, Ubuntu is going to upgrade whatever packages you have
installed (including fglrx). I don't think it's smart enough to see that
you have a video card no longer supported by fglrx and act accordingly.
I've filed a new bug for you here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-
upgrader/+bug/1069237

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068897] Re: fglrx 2:9.000-0ubuntu3: fglrx kernel module failed to build

2012-10-20 Thread Maks
After removing fglrx everything was fine. I did it before after reading
this answer http://askubuntu.com/questions/202857/cant-install-ati-
proprietary-drivers-in-12-10 .

See Xorg log in attach.

Maybe in bug description I wrote not correctly with compiz. After
installing fglrx and logging to system I saw only wallpaper and I
thought that window managed hadn't started and the problem in compiz,
but it was present in a running process.

P.S. Sorry for my English.

The problem with fglrx occurs because your card is no longer supported
in newer versions. The upgrade manager is not smart enough to realize
this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1066189] Re: 413c:2003 USB keyboard frequently stops working

2012-10-20 Thread Tan Kah Ping
This specific hardware configuration I've used with Ubuntu 12.04
Precise.

I've used Ubuntu since 4.10 Warty basically upgrading my hardware
gradually over the years but I don't recall getting this particular
issue before.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: Unity does not load after installing fglrx-installer

2012-10-20 Thread Pubudu Kodikara
With the open source drivers, I can't switch between the Intel and the
AMD gpus. It also starts to over hear the laptop. There's also a some
small slowdowns with the default drivers.

I already opened a bug report in the Unofficial AMD Linux Bugzilla
(http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=624)
