[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973506] Re: Huge processor's loading by Xorg process when nvidia proprietary drivers installed

2012-11-20 Thread Reza Roboubi
I doubt it is an Nvidia issue for these reasons:

1.) I've installed 12.04 on my mom's quad core, and Nvidia proprietary
is _probably_ not installed there.

2.) This happens in Firefox, but NOT Chromium(on the same web page,
namely cuttherope.ie)

3.) According to the top command(I can post the top screen shot if you insist)
the problem is this:
Chrome distributes the work between several threads(both Chrome and xorg
threads are busy) hence utilizing more cores for the same job. In fact, Chrome
uses more total CPU than Firefox for this job, but it is very smooth.)
Firefox, somehow, seems to dump the whole task onto xorg(and a single thread,
apparently.) I have Ubuntu 10.04-LTS on another 2 core box. The same version
of Firefox(16.0.2) is running there. HOWEVER, Firefox(10.04-LTS) renders that
same web page very smoothly. Like Chromium(12.04-LTS) it distributes the work,
apparently, evenly between the FF process and xorg, i.e. several cores.)

It is strange: if the FF versions weren't the same, I would surely
report it to the Mozilla people. What to do?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973506] Re: Huge processor's loading by Xorg process when nvidia proprietary drivers installed

2012-11-20 Thread Reza Roboubi
See these messages:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1741768
http://askubuntu.com/questions/181377/compiz-unity-very-unstable-crashing-very-often-on-12-04

Some say Compiz/Unity is a major problem and should be disabled to
increase performance and stability. Sorry I can't be more help, I don't
have access to the 12.04-LTS box right now.

the issue a couple of times since my latest comment, and each time I
just had to kill the empathy process to get my system back.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1081108] [NEW] Xorg crash after clicking on workspace in inkscape

2012-11-20 Thread Nils Ole Tippenhauer
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce on my machine:
1) open inkscape
2) click anywhere on workspace

Result:
X dies, back to login prompt

Expected result:
nothing should happen

Details of my setup:

I did not manage to get an Xorg backtrace yet as I don't have a second maching
to do the remote SSH thing.
This bug looks a lot like #1023004, I opened a new one because the old one is
fix released with no-one assigned to.

The install is fresh on a new laptop. I have since switched to the xorg-
bleeding PPA, but this did not fix the problem. I am also now using the
trunk PPA of inkscape, without change of behaviour.

Please advise if more information is needed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1081122] [NEW] x11proto-(gl, randr, dri2)-dev need to be updated for backport stack

2012-11-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

[Impact]
 * For the lts stack updates to x11proto-dri2, x11proto-gl and x11proto-randr
are required
 * x11proto-gl and x11proto-dri2 are used for building xorg-server and mesa
 * x11proto-randr are used for building xorg-server and libxrandr

[Test Case]
 * Not really available, but rebuilding mesa, libxrandr and xorg-server should
be good enough
 to verify it works correctly.

[Regression Potential]
 * Low, but have to look out for builds failing with defines conflicting with
/usr/include/X11/extensions

[Other Info]
 * the x11proto headers only define structs and parameters used by the x11
protocol in a backwards compatible fashion.
For testing the x stack I've had to rebuild the older xorg-server and mesa
during testing, which worked fine with the newer headers.

** Affects: x11proto-dri2 (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1076872] Re: [HP Probook 4530s] Unity does not load with fglrx-installer in 12.10 AMD Radeon™ HD 6490M

2012-11-20 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Michael Knopp, since we already have an apport-collect for Quantal, running
another apport-collect in Quantal would attach a lot of unnecessary logs.
Instead, could you please just attach the one log desired:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

Thank you for your understanding.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1074779] Re: llvmpipe used after clean install instead of intel

2012-11-20 Thread madbiologist
Causing the problem on Ubuntu 12.04.1 when installing the 3.5 kernel is not too
surprising as that kernel contains some, but not all, of the updates needed to
support your hybrid graphics. All of the pieces are supposedly present in
Ubuntu 12.10, as per bug 1053250 (it doesn't mention the nouveau driver but I
recall reading that it was upated to support hybrid graphics too), however
hybrid graphics is only working for a select few people (such as the reporter
of bug 1053250, who has different hardware to you) and remains problematic -
see http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=MTIxOTM
This article also summarizes some of the hybrid graphics improvements planned
for Ubuntu 13.04. See
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-r-gaming-platform-graphics-support
 and especially
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-r-hybrid-graphics-user-experience
to monitor progress in this area.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973506] Re: Huge processor's loading by Xorg process when nvidia proprietary drivers installed

2012-11-20 Thread Brian Neal
The bug sure seemed like an nVidia issue to me, especially with the
older GPU 8400M GS I have. I didn't even have Firefox running. Switching
between windows, moving windows, operating menus produced huge large
spikes in CPU utilization. I have since switched to the Ubuntu-x-swat
PPA as the source of my nVidia drivers and performance is much better.
It still feels more laggy than it should, but it is usable now. I am
still running 12.04.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1081185] [NEW] Touchpad can't be deactivated after a while

2012-11-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm running Kubuntu 12.04.1. When I first start a session, I can (and
do) deactivate the touchpad with Fn-F6 on my Lenovo laptop. But later
on, something -- I don't know what -- reactivates the touchpad and I
can't shut it off using normal means. At the same time the Systems
Settings section for the touchpad changes and no longer offers the
option of shutting off the touchpad if the mouse is active.

Fortunately I seem to be able (so far) to deactivate the touchpad with
this:

xinput set-prop 13 Device Enabled 0

but that shouldn't be necessary.

I have version 1.6.2-1ubuntu1~precise2 of server-xorg-input-synaptics.
But I'm not sure that's the program responsible for the problem.

2012-11-20 Thread hadobac
Mate, I'm happy that our cards are identical, this is one indicator that

I'm using my system for works now, I'm not willing to reinstall the

Hope this work out.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1081009] Re: [arrandale] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x02000022

2012-11-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
Probably a kernel regression in drm. Not much has changed on the X side
since the quantal release.

Tried rebooting against the quantal kernel? Assuming that works, bisect
using http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ would be the next
easiest. Or a full git bisection search if you'd prefer.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1080427] Re: Xorg freeze after start of the Dash

2012-11-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
For GPU lockup bugs with Intel graphics, you need to collect the output
of 'dmesg' and your /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state file. Both
of these must be collected while the machine is locked up (e.g. by
sshing into the sick machine over ethernet). See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze for additional info.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1080808] Re: nVidia/nouveau fails when logging in to Ubuntu/Kubuntu with kernel 3.7.0-2

2012-11-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
Do you mean the PGRAPH errors in dmesg? Any other errors displayed to
the console or other logs?

Your report is a bit ambiguous on one point: You say you've been seeing
the bug since Quantal, around Beta2, however you later say that
Booting back on the current Quantal kernel restores it to working.
Care to clarify? By chance could you be lumping two distinct bugs
together?

Focusing on the raring 100% failure on login. There are mainline
kernels at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ you can try
testing. If it were me, I'd start at 3.5-quantal and verify that works,
then test v3.7-rc6-raring and verify that fails, then randomly test
kernels between those versions to narrow down when the regression first
starts.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1081009] Re: [arrandale] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x02000022

2012-11-20 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.7 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If the bug also exists in mainline, I'd like to perform a kernel bisect
to identify the commit that introduced this regression.

Thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1081288] [NEW] Black screen when ubuntu bootup splash screen is expected.

2012-11-20 Thread feanor
Public bug reported:

I use HDD encryption, hence I am given a passphrase prompt at the
beginning of the boot process. Every second bootup the screen remains
black when the ubuntu splash is expected.

When this happens, it results in me having to reset the laptop. This in
turn yields the grub menu. When proceeding to load the kernel, the
ubuntu splash screen appears as expected. This problem does not occurr
with fglrx. I have enabled the grub menu for every bootup. The problem
persists though.

This might be related to suspend/resume problems (screen remains black
after resume) which I will create another bug for.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1077516] Re: USB read/write errors turns monitor to text only display

2012-11-20 Thread John Brondum
** Description changed:

  [Problem]
USB external disk read/writes which the systems reports by turning the
monitor to text only, but X continues to work

  [Discussion]
The main laptop screen will suddenly switch to black screen with text (the
error message), a blinking cursor and a working mouse pointer, while the
external monitor continues to work ok.

Please also refer to video, as it is slightly difficult to explain in writing
only :)
  http://ubuntuone.com/4co3KnLvJXAyryLT3FKWbZ
+
+ The X.org log gets flooded with the below when it occurs:
+ (WW) intel(0): first get vblank counter failed: Invalid argument

  [Workarounds]
Appears only to be happening when using a dual monitor setup. And the problem
can be resolved by disconnecting the external monitor although not a permanent
fix

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-11-20 Thread Christoph
*** PROBLEM SOLVE ***
Linux Mint 14 works fine and has solved many bugs :)
All Bugs I had before are gone, at the time i had no critical point,
im very happy with mint 14.

So the problem with freezing should be solved with ubuntu 12.10 too because of
another kernel
and mint 14 based on ubuntu 12.10 ;)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-11-20 Thread Brendan Brigham
@ Christoph ... I thought others were having issues with Ubuntu 12.10
also ? I have since switched to Mint 13 Cinnamon 64bit and it has been
absolutly flawless. I miss the Lens and certain aspects of Unity, but
with stability like this who cares.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1075937] Re: Add support for Linux 3.7

2012-11-20 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello Alberto, or anyone else affected,

Accepted nvidia-graphics-drivers-updates into precise-proposed. The
package will build now and be available at
http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-
updates/304.64-0ubuntu0.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please change the bug tag from
verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not, change the
tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing
will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in

underneath the barrier from left to right and onto the second monitor.

Reproduced with xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.12.0-2.fc17.x86_64

(Using GNOME 3 you can reproduce by setting up two monitors like this
with the primary monitor on the left - a pointer barrier will be set up
at position X to make the hot corner at the bottom left. Try mousing
along the bottom row of pixels on the left monitor. This leak is not
observed if the two monitors are the same size, indicating that the
pointer barrier is correctly positioned.)

Reproduced, but the conditions are narrow. The barrier must align with the edge
of a monitor and the movement _vector_ must not overlap with the barrier.
e.g. if you're in that corner, moving by 1/1 will block, moving by 1/2 won't
block.

Cause is that the fixes code that calculates whether a barrier is
blocking doesn't know about screen edges. So the picture the fixes code
sees for a movement a to b is

a X
 \X
  \
   b
Which is permitted since the movement goes just past the barrier. The RandR
code to clamp to monitors sees this picture:

 ++-+
 || |
 || |
 || |
 | a | |
 +---\+ |
  \ |
  |b|
  +-+

Which too is allowed since the destination exists in RandR space. The two
operations are quite separated in the server, merging them is tricky.

As a workaround for now, I suggest either extending the barrier to the
bottom of the second monitor like this:

 ++-+
 || |
 || |
 || |
 |X |
 +X |
  X |
  X |
  X-+

or, alternatively, to create a horizontal barrier in that corner that shares
the same endpoint with the vertical one.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1081423] [NEW] Mouse buttons give back more than one event sometimes

2012-11-20 Thread Thomas Schweikle
Public bug reported:

Since the latest updates to xorg mouse buttons may report more than one
event for every mouse key press. This leads to various negative effects:

- klicking left mouse button at the title of a window to drag it: since more
than one event delivered the window is roled up instead
- klicking left on a printer to select it: the printer is not only selected,
but printing is initiated, without any possibility to change settings
- klicking right to open a context menu: the menu is opened, then closed,
because multiple events are generated
- klicking right to open a context menu: the menu is opened, then a menu entry
selected and executed without any posibility to select the menu entry. Which
one is selected depends on where the mouse button was on screen, when the menu
is taller than the space between lower edge and mouse cursor.
- scrolling the mouse wheel: sometimes it is impossible to scroll to a defined
possition, because multiple events scroll further than expected
- selecting text leads to various unwanted results:
-- text is selected, then moved arround, because of multiple key down-events

This is with various mice:
- Logitech
- LC-Power
- Microsoft

Tested with more than one mouse from all of the above, to exclude
defective mice. All of them work with Windows as expected. As soon as I
clamt them to my Ubuntu-Box they all show the same behaviour: multiple
events for one klick (doesn't mater which key), multiple events for
scrolling.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1081423] Re: Mouse buttons give back more than one event sometimes

This is what is given back for ONE klick of the right mouse button:

ButtonPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x5a1,
state 0x0, button 1, same_screen YES
ButtonRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x5a1,
state 0x100, button 1, same_screen YES
ButtonPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x5a1,
state 0x0, button 1, same_screen YES
ButtonRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x5a1,

The mouse clearly delivers one event only if tested on Windows!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1081009] Re: [arrandale] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x02000022

2012-11-20 Thread Martin Pitt
I confirm that it is definitively the kernel. I ran with the quantal 3.5
kernel for the remainder of yesterday and got no freeze. I now install
linux-
image-3.7.0-030700rc6-generic_3.7.0-030700rc6.201211162135_amd64.deb and
will follow up with the results.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1081009] Re: [arrandale] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x02000022

2012-11-20 Thread Martin Pitt
I just got the freeze again with linux-
image-3.7.0-030700rc6-generic_3.7.0-030700rc6.201211162135_amd64.deb.
Does the GPU dump give any information as to which upstream commits
could be the culprit? I don't have a reliable way to reproduce this, I
always just need to work with the computer for a few hours, so bisecting
without informed guesses would take ages.
