2012-07-04 Thread Bilal Akhtar
Yeah, it definitely seems like a Unity crash.

In that case, do you have any .crash files for compiz in /var/crash? If
so, can you run the command

apport-bug /var/crash/NAME_OF_CRASH_FILE.crash

and file a new bug report for it? If that does work, then we can close
this bug since apport will file a new one with all relevant details.
Also, be sure to give us the bug number of the new bug if you file one.

Thanks!

2012-04-17 Thread Bilal Akhtar
Thank you Jay for the quick fix, and Didier for the quick upload.

There are a few minor changes still needed in the branch (Gord pointed
that out in the merge proposal), but otherwise the fix should work now.
Now that the package is in release, could you upgrade to unity
5.10.0-0ubuntu5 and see if it fixes the issue?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 981168] Re: Regression: Installing apps causes a terrible visual glitch-- have to restart X.org.

2012-04-17 Thread Bilal Akhtar
Another thing, I haven't tried this out yet (I'm at school) but I can
see this change in the branch:

56  - self-launcher_addrequest_special.emit(desktop_file,
AbstractLauncherIcon::Ptr(), aptdaemon_task, icon,
57  - icon_x, icon_y, icon_size);

If this line gets removed, it means the icon wouldn't fly anymore, and
it won't get pinned either. I can't see it getting re-added.

Can anyone with this package check if this is the case?

2012-04-16 Thread Bilal Akhtar
This issue can be completely isolated to Intel Atom integrated GPUs. All
other graphic drivers are unaffected.

I don't have an Atom GPU so I can't reproduce this issue. And, it's most
certainly a driver bug.

With regards to Unity, where should we go for this? Should we blacklist
the animation (not the whole of Unity 3D) for that driver, should we try
working around it in some way (Jay might know more about this), or
should we (gulp) remove the animation for 12.04?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 981168] Re: [i945] Regression: Installing apps causes a terrible visual glitch on netbooks-- have to restart X.org.

2012-04-16 Thread Bilal Akhtar
The lspci -v command should return a large amount of text. Search for
your graphic card in it (usually starts as VGA compatible controller)
and see the Kernel driver in use line in the graphic card block.

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core
Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA
controller])
Subsystem: Dell Device 050e
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 51
Memory at f140 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4M]
Memory at e000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
I/O ports at 4000 [size=64]
Expansion ROM at unassigned [disabled]
Capabilities: access denied
Kernel driver in use: i915
Kernel modules: i915

As you can see, in my case it's i915, and i945 seems to be the affected
driver.

Also, try running unity --reset, then install an app again. Does the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956208] Re: Screen corruption on AMD with Radeon driver

2012-03-15 Thread Bilal Akhtar
Oh wait, I just discovered these lines in the UnitySupportTest.txt
attachment:

Error: command ['/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test', '-p', '-f'] failed with exit
code 1: OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x300)
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.1

Not software rendered:[31;01mno[00m

Unity 3D supported:   [31;01mno[00m

First line explains a lot. The command exited with an error because the
last line says Unity 3D isn't supported. It's intended. Ignoring that
part of the line, I find it really surprising that the vendor string is
VMWare. Are you running Ubuntu in VBox/VMWare Player or something?

Second, AFAIK gallium based drivers are known to have issues like these.
Can someone from X-SWAT clarify?

Third, Not Software Rendered says no. That means software rendering is
being used. That said, I find it really really surprising how Compiz AND
gnome-session allowed you to log into Unity 3D. GNOME-Session usually
runs the unity-support-test utility, and if it returns an error (like it
appears in your case), it tries to boot Unity 2D. That check step
apparently didn't work in your case. Even after that, if Compiz ever
fails to load the composite plugin or fails to start OpenGL, it falls
back to Unity 2D.

For some reason, both these measures didn't avoid you from booting into
Unity 3D.

I have these questions from you:
1) Are you running Ubuntu in a VM?
2) Did Unity 3D run fine with fglrx?
3) Try rebooting. Do you get a fallback Unity 2D session? If not, does running
unity --reset help?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 929892] Re: Catalyst is unable to support a second monitor (Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2)

2012-02-09 Thread Bilal Akhtar
It's a pure Catalyst problem. The FGLRX driver powers the X server,
which powers Unity. Unity doesn't have to deal with those internals of
the system, it just draws a shell and updates it as needed (i.e. when a
new monitor is added or removed), but it doesn't have anything to do
with the monitor configuration itself.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 894132] Re: unity does not start using xinerama and multi-monitor

Can you check your /etc/xorg/xorg.conf if the Composite extension is
listed there? Probably it is responsible for some of this?

compiz issue. I might be wrong, though, I'll wait for someone from
x-swat to look at this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 899813] Re: Mouse Freezes upon first log in when interacting with keyboard

2011-12-04 Thread Bilal Akhtar
Thank you for reporting this issue and bringing it to our attention. However,
this bug is not a valid paper cut, as a paper cut should be a small usability
issue, in the default or featured applications, that affects many users and is
quick and easy to fix.
Therefore this bug cannot be addressed as part of the One Hundred Paper Cuts
project.

Seems like a tough bug to fix, and hence this is not a paper cut.
For further info about the paper cut criteria, please read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as Invalid ONLY in the
One Hundred Paper Cuts project.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 797139] Re: multiple screens - mouse goes outside the screen and can't activate the launcher

2011-06-22 Thread Bilal Akhtar
@John,

Not allowing dead zones to come up, would mean patching up the internals
of the Xorg stack (dead zones are an issue with X, and isn't a Unity
bug). The best we could do is make a barrier above the BFB, but that's a
really bad idea.

I'm closing all Unity bug tasks, and opening a task for X so that the
Ubuntu X-SWAT team can give its guidance on this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 761065] Re: [Sandybridge] Spurious *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring idle messages in dmesg when using compiz

2011-06-14 Thread Bilal Akhtar
I'm using Ubuntu Oneiric with the 3.0 kernel in the repositories and the
entire X stack from the xorg-edgers PPA. I don't get this message
anymore (got it when I was using Natty with the main repository kernel
and Natty X (not from xorg-edgers)) and the display doesn't hang anymore
when typing in the Unity search dialog.

So if X is going to be updated this cycle, then this issue would be
fixed for good in Oneiric. The kernel has already been upgraded to 3.0,
so X is the only thing which needs an upstream upgrade.

Public bug reported:

Multiarch support is the only Ubuntu delta. Please sponsor attached
debdiff.

Changelog since current oneiric version:
libxfixes (1:5.0-2ubuntu1) oneiric; urgency=low

  * Merge from debian unstable. Remaining changes:
- Build with multiarch support.

libxfixes (1:5.0-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * libxfixes3.symbols: no need to use a version for symbols that are there
forever (or close enough).
  * Upload to unstable.

  [ Cyril Brulebois ]
  * Remove automake and libtool build-dep, they're pulled in by
dh-autoreconf.

  * Bump x11proto-fixes-dev dependency for libxfixes3-dev.
  * Wrap Depends fields.
  * Add debian/libxfixes3.symbols file.
  * Pass -c4 to dh_makeshlibs to ensure updates are noticed.
  * Update symbols file, and bump shlibs for new symbols:
- XFixesCreatePointerBarrier
- XFixesDestroyPointerBarrier
  * Install manpages through dh_install.
  * Use --fail-missing instead of --list-missing in dh_install for
additional safety.
  * Switch to dh:
- Use debhelper 8.
- Use dh-autoreconf.
  * Remove xsfbs accordingly.
  * Update Uploaders list. Thanks, David!
  * Add a placeholder series file.
  * Bump Standards-Version to 3.9.1 (no changes needed).

By launcher, do you mean the dash (the thing which opens when you click

You won't find xkill in the dash, because it doesn't have its desktop

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 616997] Re: [ATI] [RV515] Unity keeps reloading with a white background

2010-11-30 Thread Bilal Akhtar
I upgraded to Natty today, and Unity Desktop is working fine here. There
are a few bugs, such as the menu bar becoming blank periodically, but I
guess this is affecting all users.

Fix released?

Whenever you subscribe sponsors, please make sure that a proper debdiff
is attached, not a patch that modifies only part of the package.

Instructions to create a debdiff:
