[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1764896] [NEW] System will not display using displayport from AMD GPU

2018-04-17 Thread terry b
Public bug reported:

There are 2 monitors connected to 1 GPU. The monitor connected via a
digital connection always comes up correctly. The monitor connected via
DISPLAYPORT does not come up, even though the machine is booting
correctly.

It's almost like the DP path isn't recognized by xorg.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1543659] Re: MIR: xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu

2016-02-09 Thread Michael Terry
Yeah this is fine.

One oddity with packaging though: README.source claims quilt usage (and
there's a debian/series). But source/format is 1.0 and autogen.sh and
.dir-locals.el are directly patched in without quilt.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1412441] Re: [MIR] libclc

2016-02-04 Thread Michael Terry
OK, so we need to both update to llvm-3.8 in xenial and switch libclc to
llvm-3.8.

I'll assign this MIR to doko, because he understands the intricacies of
the toolkits better than me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1412441] Re: [MIR] libclc

2016-02-04 Thread Michael Terry
No, llvm-3.8 doesn't help here. I'm trying to avoid xenial having two
llvms in main. Right now our default, supported llvm is llvm-3.6. So
either we switch libclc to use our supported version, or we switch our
supported version to be the one libclc uses.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1412441] Re: [MIR] libclc

2016-02-03 Thread Michael Terry
llvm-3.7 is not our default in xenial yet. So either libclc should be
switched to use 3.6 or our default should be updated to 3.7.

Also, looks like clang isn't technically in main yet. It's source
package (llvm-toolchain-3.6) is. But it hasn't been promoted yet. I'd
have to go see if that was just because we didn't need to yet or if
there was a problem with it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1420959] [NEW] xmir crashes when launching chromium

2015-02-11 Thread Michael Terry
Public bug reported:

I've installed xserver-xorg-xmir, unity8-desktop-session-mir, and set my
lightdm seat type to unity. Using normal everyday unity-greeter and

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1412441] Re: [MIR] libclc

2015-02-02 Thread Michael Terry
Looks mostly fine. But it doesn't re-build on current vivid?

/usr/lib/llvm-3.6/bin/llvm-as: ./generic/lib/shared/vload_impl.ll:124:6: error:
unexpected type in metadata definition
!1 = metadata !{metadata !char, metadata !5}
 ^
Makefile:244: recipe for target 'nvptx--nvidiacl/lib/shared/vload_impl.ll.bc'
failed

Besides that, the metapackage clang will have to be promoted to main
too. But that should be simple, its llvm-defaults source package is in
main already, as is clang-3.6. Which makes me wonder, is it best
practices to specify a clang version in your build-depends, or should it
be left as just clang?

- Should use Pre-Depends: ${misc:Pre-Depends} for libevdev2
- Bummer about tests. Sounds like they could run as a dep8 test though. Has

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1254150] Re: Sync xserver-xorg-video-vesa 1:2.3.3-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2013-11-22 Thread Michael Terry
This sync looks fine code-wise. And I built it fine locally in an amd64
pbuilder. But when I sync'd it, I got a FTBFS on amd64:
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/157365913/buildlog_ubuntu-trusty-arm64.xserver-xorg-video-vesa_1%3A2.3.3-1_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz

Does the assembly error make any sense to you?

2013-11-22 Thread Michael Terry
Actually, as Artur pointed out to me on IRC, the amd64 failure existed
before. So LP still let the sync be promoted to the release pocket.
Thus, this is closed!

Thanks, Artur!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1158611] Re: 12.10 New build. No unity or time bar

2013-04-28 Thread Terry Scott
OK, I think I've got a cause, but not a solution as yet.

I've just installed 13.04 onto a new partition, with a new, seperate /home -
I'll call it Temp-home(TH) to save typing
On previous installs of Ubuntu, I use an existing seperate /home, I'll call it
PH to save typing.
When 13.04 starts using TH, Unity works and I get a status bar.
When I add PH to /etc/fstab, Unity does'nt work and status bar is missing.
Take PH out of /etc/fstab and Unity/status bar are fine.
Not enough room to merege PH into TH.
Looks like there's something within PH that's conflicting and stopping Unity/
status bar from appearing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1158611] Re: 12.10 New build. No unity or time bar

2013-04-28 Thread Terry Scott
OK, Unity / status bar problem resolved in both 12.10 and 13.04
Solution:-
From 12.10(gnome-panel) copied all files from TH to PH, and re-booted.
Unity/status bar are back on both 13.04 and 12.10.
Got some tuning to do on 13.04, currently using X.Org X server driver, but all
looking good so far

Might be cause of https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/227657
and https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/227648

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1158611] Re: 12.10 New build. No unity or time bar

2013-03-30 Thread Terry Scott
Update:-
Three Ubuntu builds
1) 12.04 Working fine except Evolution which has been updated in 12.10 and is
not backwards compatible.
2) 12.10, updated from a 12.04 build.
3) 12.10 Clean install from .iso
Neither 12.10 builds have a working unity/ task bar. Task bar only visable when
gnome-panel installed and selected at logon.
Checked and installed linux-headers-generic and fglrx and both installed

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1158611] Re: 12.10 New build. No unity or time bar

2013-03-30 Thread Terry Scott
Dave,
On the clean install:-
1) From the desktop, no Unity / task bar, ctrl/alt/f1 to login and install
gnome-panel synaptic. Would not let me install fglrx as part of another
package
2) Restarted lightdm in gnome-panel.
3) Using synaptic, installed all updates, which included a refresh of
ubuntu-drivers-common, which include fglrx and a newer kernal. Also installed
the packages I commonly use from the repository
4) Rebooted into ubuntu - no unity / taskbar
5) Using synaptic, re-installed fglrx, installed linux-headers-generic. Using
software-control, installed ubuntu-restricted-extras. Reguired update of
software sources to do this. Still no unity / task bar

2013-03-22 Thread Terry Scott
Hi,

Thanks for your quick response. Would have checked things out quicker but life
gets in the way sometimes.
Would have thouth linux-headers-generic would have been installed as part of
the build from the iso?
Checked through synaptic. linux-headers generic not installed so installed and
rebooted into ubuntu.
Still no task bar/unity.
Only able to select anything on desktop, not able to switch between
applications (alt/tab)
ctrl/alt/f1 and stopped/started lightdm back into gnome-panel(no effects) to
check synaptic and update this log.
linux-headers-generic ok in synaptic
Have also tried switching driver (Software Sources/Additional drivers) but
still not working.
motherboard is GA-55M-DS2 with onboard Radeon graphics which I think is model

2013-03-22 Thread Terry Scott
OK, bad news still no good.
install of fglrx came back with already there, probrably from when I tried
switching over to another driver in #4 above.
Re-installed via synaptic and re-booted.
No good
Purged fglrx-updates fglrx-amdcccle fglrx and installed
amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.1-linux-x86.x86_64 which I had previously
downloaded. Still no good.
I have a legacy version,
amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.1-legacy-linux-x86.x86_64 which I am willing
to try.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1130281] Re: [MIR] qtbase

2013-02-20 Thread Michael Terry
qt5 is pretty nicely packaged actually. But it will pull in a few other
packages (firebird, libxcb, at least).

This will probably need a security review too. Qt4 has some recent CVEs
for example.

I am happy to review the packaging and maintainability issues myself.
But I'd like a quick security audit too. So assigning to the security
team.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1130281] Re: [MIR] qtbase

2013-02-20 Thread Michael Terry
It looks like the big consumers of qt4 on the desktop image (which is
what I assume you mean by supported packages; there are other KDE
packages still in main but I don't believe they are supported) are:

* the signon components
* ubuntuone (via python-qt4)
* python-qt4 (upstream supports qt5-rc, but that support is not packaged yet)

So a bit of unscoped work. But we don't want to encourage people to
write things now that use qt4, (i.e. we don't want to hold back on using
qt5). So I think it's more reasonable to allow qt5 and port to it in
time for 14.04 LTS.

I've filed bug 1130782 (ubuntuone), bug 1130780 (signon), and bug
1130784 (python-qt4) about the desire to have ports.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 914631] Re: [mir] mesa-demos

2012-12-19 Thread Michael Terry
Seems fine to me, especially since it used to be in main. As for the
naming of the package, it's following Debian, so that's fine.

Maintainership doesn't seem *super* great (not often updated in Debian
or Ubuntu), but I guess there's not a lot of activity here anyway.
Several crasher bugs, but they seem mostly driver related than anything.

It would be nice if we could sync up with Debian, but it's not too
important. Only changes are some package metadata stuff. We do have a
rather large delta with Debian in the form of the -extras package. But
if this is going into main, it's a delta we'd gladly suffer (rather than
moving everything into the one package).

Archive Admins: please only promote mesa-utils, *not* mesa-utils-extra.
Thanks!

This seems to be due to overlay-scrollbar. If you run it like:
LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 picard
it works fine.

** Summary changed:

- on creating main window X gets unusable, memory consumption gets overly high,
high I/O-Load
+ Picard freezes X when overlay scrollbars are enabled

** Package changed: python-qt4 (Ubuntu) = overlay-scrollbar (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 992778] Re: Dual Monitor Freeze after changing Display Settings in ubuntu 12.04

2012-07-10 Thread Terry S
In case it helps anyone else, here's how I get it to work again if I
accidentally upgrade back to the broken version:

Download these files to your desktop

https://launchpad.net/~sarvatt/+archive/sru1/+build/3118995/+files/xserver-xorg-input-evdev-dev_2.6.99.901-1ubuntu3~lp921236_all.deb
https://launchpad.net/~sarvatt/+archive/sru1/+build/3118995/+files/xserver-xorg-input-evdev-udeb_2.6.99.901-1ubuntu3~lp921236_i386.udeb

In a terminal, cd to your Desktop
Then do
dpkg -i --force-downgrade
xserver-xorg-input-evdev-dev_2.6.99.901-1ubuntu3~lp921236_all.deb
dpkg -i --force-downgrade
xserver-xorg-input-evdev-udeb_2.6.99.901-1ubuntu3~lp921236_i386.udeb
dpkg -i --force-downgrade
xserver-xorg-input-evdev_2.6.99.901-1ubuntu3~lp921236_i386.deb

Logout log back in again

Then you can delete those downloaded files

2012-05-29 Thread Terry S
I'm trying to install the version in #30, but getting a message that a
later version is already installed. Is there a way to wind back to the
earlier version, or is there a later version of the working .deb?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 985065] [NEW] Can't use fr/oss keyboard layout by default

2012-04-18 Thread Michael Terry
Public bug reported:

This is a break-out bug from bug 960096.

When you have fr/oss French (alternative) layout as your first layout,
you end up with us instead.

If you enable libxklavier debugging output, you'll see the following in
your logs:

Unexpected by libxklavier X ERROR: 0x8351fb8, 163f0005, 2 [], X11
request: 145, minor code: 9

That 2 in there is the X error code, which means _XkbErrMissingTypes for
xkbfile extension. I assume 145 is the major op code that got assigned
for the XKBFile extension. If so, 9 is the X_kbSetMap request. Which all
fits with an error trying to set the new layout map.

Unusual as I have a GTX470 on one machine and GTX260 on another. Both
x64 bit versions of Ubuntu 12.04 beta 2 - both fully updated and using
the new nvidia driver and both work fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982485] Re: nvidia 295.40 breaks unity 3d

2012-04-16 Thread Terry Jones
This bug hasn't affected 12.04 beta 2 64bit. I have tried to replicate
it on two seperate machines.

Machine 1 (GTX470) Running 12.04 beta 2 with all latest updates - Working Fine
Machine 2 (GTX260) Running 12.04 beta 2 with all latest updates - Working Fine

Must be limited to i386? Can Anyone confirm?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 934707] Re: emachine e725 boots to black screen

2012-02-19 Thread Terry Jones
Bryce,

I subscribed you to this bug. It is problably a dupclicate, but I think
it is a Kernel bug. With this being a 5 year support, I think it needs
addressed. It does not bother me, as there is workarounds, but for a
new user with the same hardware it could scare them off as a first
impression.

Thanks,
Terry

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 934707] Re: emachine e725 boots to black screen

2012-02-18 Thread Terry Jones
Canonical Kernel Team
Archive for June, 2011
Brad Figg
Kernel Team Meeting Minutes

Status: General Oneiric

We’ve almost resolved all the issues from the v3.0 fallout. We’re just
wrestling with module-init-tools to get depmod sorted out. We’ve rebased
to v3.0-rc2 and pushed to master-next. With v3.0-rc2, there’s an issue
on boot (black screen of death) when the i915 driver is loaded. This can
be worked around using i915.modeset=0 at the moment. There’s also
reported boot issues on some system’s with atom processors on at least
v3.0-rc1. So, I’m a bit hesitant to upload at the moment knowing we’ll
break some common hardware use cases.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 934707] Re: emachine e725 boots to black screen

2012-02-18 Thread Terry Jones
The above post is why I think this is a kernel bug. My machine runs Ubuntu
10.04 with kernel 2.6.38-38 perfectly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 934707] [NEW] emachine e725 boots to black screen

2012-02-17 Thread Terry Jones
Public bug reported:

Booting to a black screen, however a flashlight shows a faint login window. I
can login, hear the startup sound, but still a black screen.
Again a flashlight on the screen shows a faint desktop. I am assuming the
backlight on the laptop is not responding. Pressing the function key and
brightness adjustment keys does nothing.

As a work around, adding the boot paramater acip_osi=Linux to Grub on
startup allows me to have a screen, However, the function dim keys make
it brighter while the function brighter keys make the screen dimmer.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 831884] Re: lightdm fails to start on Live CD on intel: [drm] failed to set drm interface version (plymouth race ?)

2011-08-25 Thread Michael Terry
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 830061 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/830061

This appears to be a ubiquity problem. It's crashing in ubiquity-dm due
to gir problems. ubiquity-dm is trying to call
GdkPixbuf.render_pixmap_and_mask but it isn't being found.

The X log error message doesn't seem to be relevant, as when I commented
out the crashy bits in ubiquty-dm, X came up (and then metacity crashed,
leading ubiquity to gracefully give up and autologin to a desktop).

This is bug 830061. I'll mark as a dup.

** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 830061
ubiquity-dm crashed with AttributeError in run(): 'Pixbuf' object has no
attribute 'render_pixmap_and_mask'

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 610206] [NEW] Build in input drivers for speed

2010-07-26 Thread Michael Terry
Public bug reported:

Meego uses the attached patch [1] to build in support for the 'evdev'
and 'synaptic' drivers. I believe it saves about a second on startup.

Are those safe to build in? (I don't really understand the
ramifications of doing so, but hopefully building them in doesn't hurt
users that don't use either of them.) If it is safe, maybe we should
use the patch too?

Subject: [Bug 502055] Re: [i845] [i82845G/GL Brookdale-G] Screen freeze after
 while of working

This bug report has been inactive for quite some time and in the
meantime Ubuntu has moved along. I hope the reported problem has been
resolved in the current version of Ubuntu. If it has not and there are
people willing to follow up with information collecting and testing, it
is best to file a new bug report with the latest Ubuntu development
version (currently 10.04, but soon 10.10), using the ubuntu-bug command
if possible. Feel free to mention the bug number of this bug.

We are sorry that we are not always have the capacity to look at all
reported bugs in a timely manner. Occationally we have to purge old bug
reports where no progress has been made, whether it is due to reporter
not being able to respond or lack of manpower on the Ubuntu side, in
order to keep our list of active bugs current. Sorry for the
 inconvenience this may cause.

Here are a few tips that will increase the chances that your bug gets
 priority:
 * Read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting
 * Browse https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X and see if there is some relevant
 information for you problem
 * Respond quickly to questions from triagers
 * Try changing things to see if the behaviour changes, e.g.
   * A new mainline kernel from
 http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=M;O=D (more information at
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds)
   * The xorg-edgers PPA: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
   * Various options in `/etc/X11/xorg.conf` (see `man intel`)
 * Browse other bug reports to see if you find a similar one and provide the
information that is being asked for there.

eventually the screen stops responding to the cursor, so I have to switch off

I don't know what to check for in Synaptic??

I can confirm this problem, I'm experiencing the same symptoms on a dell
dimension 2350 with a pentium 4 2.0 MHz, same chipset, karmic, etc.

Reinstalling does not fix the problem, but using the older (2.4) intel
xorg driver significantly helped. My processor usage dropped from about
90% while watching movies to about 50% (which is still too much) after
changing drivers, but I still can't watch hulu (very choppy).

 here's a link:
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReinhardTartler/X/RevertingIntelDriverTo2.4

Also if your screen does freeze do this:
 1) press control, alt, and f2
 2) you'll come to a black screen that says your computer name and login (e.g.
 'computer name' login:)
  i) login in with your user name and then enter your password
 3) then when you've reached the command line enter:
  i) sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
 ii) enter your password

This should bring your screen back.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 508185] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in FatalError()

2010-01-16 Thread Terry Jones
Thanks Bruce,

I don't know how long the fix takes to work through the system, but as
of today 1-16-10 at 5:37 update, the autologin feature is still not
working. I still get crash reports the last few days which I have not
been reporting. Should I report the crashes again or wait until the fix
is applied? Thanks for all the developers hard work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502055] Re: [i82845G/GL Brookdale-G] Screen freeze after while of working

2010-01-12 Thread Terry O'Brien
Thanks for your response Bryce, I am thinking of re-installing 9.10 as
the last resort unless you suggest otherwise? But if you think that
might be the best action to take at this point could you provide any
links that may assist me in the process? I found the following but would
be good to have more detail:

http://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/reinstallation

Sometimes, in the beginning of your Linux adventure, you'll want to
reinstall Ubuntu. Because you've inadvertently spoiled the system beyond
repair (it happens to us all!).

There are several ways to reinstall, but this is probably the easiest
way to do it:

1. Backup your personal documents, music, pictures et cetera, on an
external storage medium. Like a CD, a DVD, an external hard drive or a
USB memory stick.

2. In Ubuntu 9.10, you can use the Desktop CD: boot your computer from
the Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop CD and start GParted: System - Administration -
GParted. Then use this disk partitioner, to completely destroy the
Ubuntu partitions. Or you can use the free GParted LiveCD for that
(Ubuntu 8.04).

Don't format the Ubuntu partitions, just destroy them. The result will
be unallocated free space.

3. Reboot your computer. Don't remove the Ubuntu CD.

4. Boot again from the Ubuntu CD and choose again Install Ubuntu.
During it's course, the installation application will automatically
suggest to install Ubuntu on the unallocated free space on the hard
drive. Which is what you want.

After you've agreed to it's proposal, the installer takes automatically
care of the rest!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502055] Re: [82845G/GL Brookdale-G] Screen freeze after while of working

2010-01-08 Thread Terry O'Brien
I have 2 machines each with Ubuntu 9.10, and I have always been able to just
move the mouse to restore, so maybe machines later than pentium 4 do not
respond in this way.
Latest on freeze is that it froze last night while viewing photos, so is not
specific to whatever I am doing on the workspace, though - just a few minutes
ago - I unlocked the window changer on the lower panel as it had somehow
slipped to the middle as I relocated a url icon. I successfully relocated the
window changer, but then when I tried to move the garbage bin after unlocking
it, the screen froze and I had to press the boot up button on the pc to shut
down. When it came up again, the top and bottom panels appeared but the screen
was all black. Rebooted again and screen was again black but came back on after
moving the cursor around a few times. Then unlocked and moved the shut down
applet on the top panel - successfully - and then the date/time applet, where
it again frose after unlocking and clicking on 'move' (in the drop down menu -
right click), and again it froze, but after rebooting, the screen did not go
black again, and I was able to complete the relocating operation without a
further freeze.
Sorry for the convoluted detail but figure it is best to give as clear a
picture as possible.
And thanks for all your patience and assistance Alex - I understand that I have
to wait now for a developer to take a look at it (hopefully!). Learning a lot
through this exercise though, in terms of the process involved in locating
package faults and reporting them effectively. I am overall very much enjoying
my Linux experience - problems included!
All the best - Terry

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502055] Re: [82845G/GL Brookdale-G] Screen freeze after while of working

2010-01-07 Thread Terry O'Brien
will start keeping a record of when freezes occur - lately they have been less
often, but it always freezes when after screensaver eventually defaults to
sleep (or is it hibernation - same thing?) - it won't restore by moving mouse
or pressing enter, so I have to shut power off. But noticed yesterday that this
does not happen when music player is on.
Seems to occur more when surfing net or emailing, but also happens when word
processing or using pc generally. The thin green line left of screen
accompanied by a quick shudder of the screen - upon clicking on toolbar icons -
is the main symptom of the fault - aside from the eventual freezing itself.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502055] Re: screen freezes after working for awhile but cursor still moves around

2010-01-06 Thread Terry O'Brien
Attached lspci as instructed.
Checked the site to do with xorg - the command to open a new bug is ubuntu-bug
-p xorg - should I then refer to this current bug number? - how much of the
details of this bug should I transfer?
Alex - you posted: Changed in xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → New
is this something I need to act on in some way, or is it just a statement of
current status for general information?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502055] Re: screen freezes after working for awhile but cursor still moves around

2010-01-06 Thread Terry O'Brien
Thanks for your input Akria. I don't know why it attempts to reconnect to
wireless as it is connected permanently to broadband via ethernet cable. And I
notice when I click on the icon (installed on the top toolbar) for signing in
to hotmail, the screens shakes slightly and a flash of a green line appears
around the edges - at its worst this has appeared as a series of green line
boxes, but that hasn't happened for awhile.
I will wait to hear back before creating a new bug report.

Thanks Alex,
I am still quite a novice to the terminal, but 'permission denied' was the
response to each of the entries, and could not locate from 'File Search'. I
will check out the bug report links again to get more info on how to proceed.
And how do I run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

Tried as suggested, and I assume you mean to go to the 'File System' -
but then I am confronted by abbreviated names of folders so I do not
have a clue where to look for the required files - could you please be
more specific as I am not all that PC tech minded, though I can follow
logical steps easily enough - thanks
