[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1271532] [NEW] Screenshots randomly empty

2014-01-22 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I'm almost sure this is a regression, as I often take a lot of
screenshots and I had never seen this until very recently (a few days).

At random times, all the screenshots I take using the PrintScreen key
start being empty, meaning they only produce an empty image of the
size of the screen all of a uniform color (f2f1f0). Starting from that,
every single screenshot is empty, until some random action I take,
such as switching windows, fixes the issue.

This last time what fixed the issue was:
- I ran the Screenshot application manually from the dash (instead of hitting
the PrintScreen key as I normally do), and it worked fine
- then I tried again with the PrintScreen key and now it worked.

Now it's happening again and I can't figure out how to fix it. Running
the Screenshot app from Dash doesn't help this time, nor does switching
windows.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1079848] Re: pae kernel corrupts nvidia driver

2014-01-04 Thread matteo sisti sette
I don't have that computer any more.
I installed the nvidia drivers in what I believe was the standard way in
Ubuntu, i.e. through some Settings panel which was called something like
Additional Drivers I seem to remember. I can't find that any more on Ubuntu
13.04 (on my new computer)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1079848] Re: pae kernel corrupts nvidia driver

2014-01-04 Thread matteo sisti sette
This is a little bit ridiculous.
The fact that I don't have the hardware any more doesn't mean the bug has
disappeared, and as per comment #4 there seems to be enough information here to
fix the issue or at least investigate it further.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1256425] [NEW] whole screen became blank white - no recovery possible - after unplugging and replugging external monitor

2013-11-29 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I have a laptop with an external monitor connected. When the monitor is
connected, I only use the external monitor. Usually, when I unplug the
monitor, the screen switches automatically, i.e. the builtin screen
turns on; when I replug the external monitor, the builtin screen turns
off an the external monitor turns on.

A few minutes ago I unplugged the external monitor, and the builtin
screen became all white. I could see the mouse cursor on a white
background and nothing else. The mouse cursor moved smoothly, but I
could'nt do anything.

Keystrokes such as tab, atl+tab, ctrl+alt+T (to open a terminal),
Ctrl+Super+D, and the like, did absolutely nothing (or they do what they
are supposed to do but I couldn't see it because the screen remained
white.

Replugging the monitor didn't fix the issue. When I plugged the monitor,
the builtin screen would turn off, the external monitor would turn on
but I could only see a white rectangle (probably of the same size as the
laptop built in screen) on a black background, and the mouse cursor.

Switching between virtual terminals (i.e. Ctrl+Alt+F1 and Ctrl+Alt+F7)
worked, but wouldn't fix the issue.

I had no other option than reboot (which I had to do from the F1 virtual
terminal), obviously losing all my unsaved work because of such a stupid
bug, when probably all programs were running fine but invisibly.

Please tell me what can be done to force a wake up of the screen as a
workaround so next time this happens at least I don't have to reboot and
lose all my data.

I think this is a REGRESSION, or at least I had never, ever seen this
before in years of using ubuntu.

2013-11-29 Thread matteo sisti sette
Confirming though it's my own report as this is the kind of bug where
there's no point in waiting for somebody else to observe it, and it
needs urgent attention.

Please set the importance to Critical unless there is a workaround, as
this renders the whole system unusable and causes data loss.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1250070] [NEW] Window content randomly stops being updated

2013-11-11 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I've seen this happen with Gedit and Google Chrome, and I'm alsmost sure
with other apps too.

At random times, the contents of a window stop being updated. You can
type or click things and nothing seems to happen, as if the program had
halted, but then you resize the window or switch to another one and come
back, and you see the contents updated, with all the results of your
previous interction.

This is extremely critical.
I'm going to confirm this myself because I've already seen it on two different
machines.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1244733] [NEW] touchscreen not enabled by default

2013-10-25 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a very old computer that has a
touchscreen (it's not a notebook, it's an almost-square one-block heavy-
as-shit computer with a built-in touchscreen and no keyboard). The
touchscreen is not working or enabled by default. It should, as it
should on EVERY computer that has a touchscreen.

Before I installed Ubuntu 12.04, there was Ubuntu 7.10 installed on the
same machine and it had the touchscreen working. That means support for
this touchscreen has been enabled for 6 years already. I guess some
additional package had been installed at that time, but nowadays, any
touchscreen should be detected and enabled by default without having to
install or setup anything.

I can't even see any settings under System Settings to enable it.

Ubuntu's System Settings is so poor. There are tons of settings that
actually exist that are not available there. You never know whether you
need to install some additional package or if it is already there to be
tweaked by editing some text file somewhere.

Some of this shit has already been improved in more recent ubuntu
versions, but 12.04 is LTS, isn't it? So these fixes should be made
readily available to 12.04.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1244733] Re: touchscreen not enabled by default

2013-10-25 Thread matteo sisti sette
Then I followed the guide from the wiki at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touchscreen
(a shame in the first place that you have to do all that manually, even if it
worked) and all I got is a machine that won't boot any more. It shows a black
screen with this error:
could not write bytes: broken pipe.

** Description changed:

- I can't even see any settings under System Settings to enable it.
+ And the worst thing is that there isn't any settings under System
+ Settings to enable or configure it.

- Ubuntu's System Settings is so poor. There are tons of settings that
- actually exist that are not available there. You never know whether you
- need to install some additional package or if it is already there to be
- tweaked by editing some text file somewhere.
-
- Some of this shit has already been improved in more recent ubuntu
- versions, but 12.04 is LTS, isn't it? So these fixes should be made
- readily available to 12.04.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1239472] [NEW] nvidia driver breaks ubuntu irreversibly (uninstalling the package doesn't fix it)

2013-10-13 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of Ubuntu 13.04
- sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
- reboot

= the whole system becomes completely unusable. When you boot, there's
no Unity launcher nor Unity's top bar. Only an empty desktop. Windows
don't have borders nor title bars (apparently compiz crashes at
startup).

And the worst thing is that uninstalling nvidia-current (or nvidia-304),
won't revert the situation.

The only way I got Unity running again was by purging nvidia* (sudo apt-
get purge nvidia*) AND manually deleting /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

So
1 - either nvidia driver is broken, or sudo apt-get nvidia-current doesn't
install it properly
2 - sudo apt-get remove should completely reverse the installation and it
doesn't.

If you have the unlucky idea to try and install nvidia-current you may
end up with an unusable and apparently unrecoverable system, which can
be pretty hard to figure out how to fix.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1079848] Re: pae kernel corrupts nvidia driver

2013-10-07 Thread matteo sisti sette
Well, if I install the pae kernel with apt-get install, i expect it to
install whatever it needs and rebuild whatever needs to be rebuilt to
not break the system.

You are not supposed to have to figure out which other stuff you need to
install and what you have to rebuild when you install a package: that's
what package managers are for.

If not in the pae kernel itself, this is a bug in the way it (or the
NVidia driver or both) is packaged.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 885747] Re: random xorg crashes

2013-09-19 Thread matteo sisti sette
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9 raring ubuntu

** Description changed:

I turned on my computer and logged in as usual. I opened some programs
and started writing an email in Thunderbird. Suddenly while I was
typing, everything disappeared and the login splash screen of Ubuntu
  appeared again, as if I had logged out from gnome, which I hadn't;
furthermore it was instantaneous: it didn't even take the time it takes
to logout. In a nanosecond my screen was simply replaced by the login
screen. I logged in again but my session was gone, and all my unsaved
data lost. I even did a sudo ps aux to see if some of my processes
were still running in some limbo, just to see if the session was still
  alive somewhere, but it wasn't.

I'm astonished. If such a thing can happen at any time, even if there is
one probability out of a million, this is a dont-even-consider-using-
  this-software bug.

I post this in he hope that ubuntu-bug has automatically included the
relevant logs, as I have no idea where to find them.

I am 100% sure I haven't pressed any combination of keys (i was hitting
Enter when it happened) and I didn't click anywhere, as I was typing.
Even if there was a logout keyboard shortcut (which I don't think), it
should never ever logout without asking for a confirmation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 885747] Re: random xorg crashes

2013-09-19 Thread matteo sisti sette
This time I resumed from a suspend.
I moved a few windows,
then the screen went suddenly black, as if xorg had crashed and it was going to
restart (or as if the whole system was going to reboot) but then it stayed
black-screen forever (meaning more than a minute, then I forced power off).
Don't know whether it's the same bug. Hope apport information helps.

By the way, this bug is marked as belonging to xorg-server, a packages
which apparently no longer exists (or that's what apport say). I went to
change the package, but when I want to see a list to choose another
package, I can't, because I write xorg and search, and it says too
many matches: that sucks. Are we supposed to know the names of each an
every package (especially when they disappeared or change name so
often)? If there are many results, just show them all paginated!! too
many matches is a completely ridiculous error message.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1104423] Re: random xorg crash

2013-09-03 Thread matteo sisti sette
I don't remember what I was doing. This happens from time to time in an
apparently random manner when doing usual stuff, no reproducible
pattern.

I don't use the Chromium browser but I do use Google Chrome. Definitely
not loads of windows open; I may have had at most 2 or 3 (but most
probably only one), with a few tabs (at the very most a dozen, most
probably 5 or 6).

Other windows I almost always keep open are: Thunderbird, Gedit,
Nautilus, Terminal.

It's very funny that there are no signs of a xorg crash, because I got
suddenly logged out without warning: doesn't that indicate a xorg crash?
Maybe it crashed so hard it couldn't even log anything?

There are a few other xorg crash reports of mine like this around. They
are separate because I use ubuntu-bug to report them so that relevant
files are (hopefully) attached.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1209035] [NEW] Whole system frozen, had to hard power off

2013-08-06 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

This time it was while exporting a file from Gimp (it seems any random
mouse click can trigger this at any moment).

The whole system got frozen; only the mouse cursor moved (smoothly),
though its animation (which at that moment was a circular waiting
animatiion) got frozen.

The system wouldn't respond to any click nor keystroke, not even
ctrl+alt+f1.

There was nothing to do but shut down the computer by holding the power
button. All unsaved data lost.

Since 12.04 or so, Ubuntu has become more unreliable and unstable than Windows.

ProblemType: Bug

I mean persistent across reboot and the acceleration factor is small and
always the same (and it even pitch-shifts audio, instead of chopping it,
so it looks like a very different issue)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173968] [NEW] Both Firefox and Chrome consuming 70% CPU without a reason at the same time

2013-04-28 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Suddenly my laptop's cooler fan began spinning very fast while the
system was completely idle, I wan't even using it though I had a few
programs opened.

So I ran top, and I saw the Chrome and Firefox processes were
alternatively consuming 70% CPU each all the time. There were only
static idle pages open, no youtube video, nothing of that kind, no
script running. I closed Firefox and Chrome kept consuming 70% cpu, then
I closed Chrome and it obviously stopped.

It would be a very strange coincidence that it was a bug in both
browsers manifesting itself at the very same time, so that's why I'm
reporting this against xorg: it's almost surely something at the system
level, and I strongly suspect something graphical (perhaps nvidia-
related? as the broken nvidia driver's bugs are usually rensponsible of
most of Ubuntu's tremendous instability).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1162568] [NEW] Whole system suddenly became ALMOST unresponsive, massive disk crunching, Ctrl+Alt+F1 finally fixed that

2013-03-31 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I have no idea what package to report this agains, and whatever process
triggered this, it is a system-level issue.

I was happily writing in gedit, with a bunch of other programs open
(Google Chrome, Thunderbird, Update Manager which I believe had already
finisded updating hours earlier, a couple of Terminals...)

Suddenly the hard disk started crunching and the whole system became almost
unresponsive, meaning that:
- most keystroke got lost (yes, lost, not delayed)
- mouse cursor movements became _very_ jerky
- most mouse clicks got lost

CPU usage was not especially high (I know it because of the fan speed
which I notice because it makes noise)

Since the system didn't respond to keystrokes, it was practically
impossible to Alt-Tab to a terminal where I would have been able to run
top and figure out maybe some process to kill

Finally, by hitting Ctlr+Alt+F1 several times, the keystrokes finally
got through and I could switch to a virtual terminal, and at that very
instant the disk crunching ended. I ran top but there was already no
process with high cpu activity. I switched back to the normal screen
with Ctrl+Alt+F7 and everything was back to normal !

I guess it was some process that suddenly started using much memory
which may have lead to massive swapping, though this is only a
hypothesis. I suspected of UpdateManager, which was open, but I think it
was already done updating much earlier. Another suspect is Thunderbird.

Anywas such a thing shoud NEVER happen. There are at least two system-level
wrong things here:
- Keyboard and mouse input and the UI in general must always have the greatest
priority and never loose responsiveness.
- Even in the rare cases where responsiveness of keyboard and mouse should
become low and this couldn't be avoided, keystrokes hould be buffered, not
lost. Actually that's what usually happens in most cases, but not this one.

The fact that merely switching to the virtual terminal made the issue go
away is very puzzling. Or maybe it was just a coincidence and it was
when the stalling high activity (of whatever process) ended that finally
I was able to switch to the terminal. Seems a big coincidence though.

And whatever program triggered this (i.e. started high disk activity, whether
it was directly or as a consequence of high ram usage) it should do it in the
background, since I didn't explicitly launch it.
IF it was Update Manager, it should run in the background. If it already does,
then the concept of background needs to be better implemented in Ubuntu.

It simply can't happen that the system suddenly becomes unstable and you
can neither save your work nor go have a look at what's happening.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1106090] [NEW] Display suddenly becomes a mess, rendering whole system unusable

2013-01-26 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I have a laptop and use an external display connected to it, and I often
switch screen using disper -s and disper -S. This issue happened
little after (but _not_ immediately after) switching screen with disper
-S.

The screen suddenly became a total flockering mess with white dots,
stripes, repeated or distorted pieces of graphics, flickerings, and all
sort of frenetically changing garbage all over the screen.

Behind this mess, the system appeared to keep working (I could open
and close programs, if I could almost see what I was doing).

Logging out didn't fix the issue; restarting did.

I had never ever observed this in 12.04 and until now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1104423] [NEW] random xorg crash

2013-01-24 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Not much to say. Xorg randomly crashed while doing nothing special. As
always.

I hope apport does its job and uploads the relevant logs.

This should be marked as CRITICAL as soon as possible. A crash of xorg
is exactly as huge an issue as a crash of the kernel, as far as a
desktop OS is concerned.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 862831] Re: colors are messed up when playing video in MOST applications

2013-01-13 Thread matteo sisti sette
After upgrading to 12.10, it seems it's fixed.
I still don't get the meaning of the 'S' in 'LTS'.
The fix needs to be made available for 12.04.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1063046] Re: The whole system hanged and stop responding. Had to reboot and lost unsaved data

2012-12-17 Thread matteo sisti sette
Still observe this from time to time.
Importance shouldn't be difficult to decide (critical).

I strongly dubt this is a graphic driver issue, though of course it is possible.
It doesn't look like it hangs the system but rather like all the UIs stop
responding. The cursor still shows and changes shape when you roll over things.
If you click on the top of the currently maximised window and drag it as if to
unmaximize it, you can even see the cursor take the shape of a hand as it
normally does when you drag something - only that it doesn't work

This is ALWAYS triggered by a mouse click, and I'm almost sure I've
always seen this with the foreground window maximised.

btw, MAYBE this could have a workaround if it wasn't for bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1016457 (the
importance of that bug is wrong)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1078320] [NEW] Tries all possible monitor modes when the monitor is not connected at startup

2012-11-13 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I have configured two displays, the one builtin in the laptop + an external one.
When I turn on the computer without the screen connected, I get the
ridiculously long error message attached below.
I don't think it's necessary to try each and every display mode just to detect
that no screen is connected at all.

Normal behavior would be a message such as Configured display is not
connected, and possibly a checkbox like don't show this message next
time.

Additionally, the error popup window is huge because it display the full
message instead of having a scroller, but I guess that's another package's bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1073933] Re: Xorg is tremendously unstable

2012-11-06 Thread matteo sisti sette
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Xorg crashes far too easily.

Just now it crashed while running disper -s (as a command shortcut).
This is not systematic. Often I run disper -s or -S without xorg crashing.

Other times xorg crashed without doing anything particular.

I experience more than a couple of xorg crashes a week, this is
  unbelievable.

Linux is known for its supposed stability. This should be on of the
topmost priorities in Ubuntu (and any linux distribution). A xorg crash
is a DISASTER, one can loose hours of work. Xorg must be rock-solid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1073933] Re: Xorg is tremendously unstable

2012-11-06 Thread matteo sisti sette
It just crashed again when running disper -s. (I run it with a
keyboard shortcut).

I can't believe this hasn't been given importance critical yet.

By the way, isn't it a deep design flaw in the very foundation of the
whole system architecture the fact that a crash of the x server implies
killing all running applications, log out the user and loose all the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1073933] [NEW] Xorg is tremendously unstable

2012-11-01 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Xorg crashes far too easily.

Just now it crashed while running disper -s (as a command shortcut).
This is not systematic. Often I run disper -s or -S without xorg crashing.

Other times xorg crashed without doing anything particular.

I experience more than a couple of xorg crashes a week, this is
unbelievable.

Linux is known for its supposed stability. This should be on of the
topmost priorities in Ubuntu (and any linux distribution). A xorg crash
is a DISASTER, one can loose hours of work. Xorg must be rock-solid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1036350] [NEW] sudden logout from unity session (xorg crash?)

2012-08-13 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I had booted just a few minutes earlier. I had opened only three
programs: the browser, Nautilus and gedit. I was typing in gedit (with
the browser opened in the background.

Suddenly I got logged off without any prompt or warning (and without
being able to save my work).

I guess it's xorg that crashed, right?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1016267] Re: 0458:003a USB mouse stops working after unplug/replug

2012-06-27 Thread matteo sisti sette
I'm changing this back to confirmed, because I've provided all the
information I _can_ provide, and otherwise this would just expire.

How the importance can be medium when you are forced to reboot almost
every time you unplug the mouse, is beyond me.

By the way this has been happening very, very often lately, and I hadn't
ever experience it at all until recently, so I suspect this is some
regression.

Actually it _may_ be related to suspend/resume. When I unplug the mouse
and replug it and it doesn't work, I usually can't tell for sure whether
it's the first time I unplug/replug after a suspend/resume. It may be
the case

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1016267] Re: 0458:003a USB mouse stops working after unplug/replug

2012-06-27 Thread matteo sisti sette
Now this is strange:

mouse had stop working.
After that, I didn't reboot, nor suspend/resume. I had unplugged and replugged
the mouse a few times without luck (as usual). Then I replugged it once more
after a long time unplugged, and it started working again.

The only thing that seems to have some strong statistical correlation
with this (though I can't get the exact pattern) is unplugging and
plugging the POWER adapter.

When mouse stops working it's always after having disconnected and
reconnected power. And this time that it has started working again has
also been after disconnecting and reconnecting power.

However, it seems this bug is going to stay incomplete until it
expires, so I guess I'm wasting my time.

I've tested the mouse on half a dozen other (Windows) computers, it's
definitely not the mouse

 2. Provide the general information.

See attachments. It's a Genius USB optical mouse

 3. Direct after logging in [...]
 4. Wait until your mouse stops working [...]

That would be ages. It happens every once in a while and I don't know of
a specific action that would trigger it

As well, could you please comment as to why you are unable to test the
upstream kernel?

I'm not sure how to do it and it would take too long and I won't take
the risk to screw something up.
