Hello,

I recently installed Ubuntu 22.04.4 on a Lenovo V145-15AST laptop.
Randomly, the screen will start flickering. I have found that pulling
the power cable out sometimes solves the issue ! But even so, with the
power cable out the screen can still start flickering. It's completely
random, but very distracting.

I am treating this as a bug as I have looked at the options in "Settings
> Screen Display" and non of those seem to make any difference.

Also I previously tried to install Linux Mint 21.3 and in that case, while 
booting from the usb stick, I got the welcome to linux mint menu which allows 
me various options and I select "Start Linux Mint"
After that the spinning mint logo appears, then a small mouse pointer on a 
black screen then the screen goes into some sort of error, a black screen with 
a few lines at the top.
Selecting "Start linux mint in compatability mode" does boot to mint but then 
the trackpad does not work.

I have included this reference to Linux Mint as I believe mint is based
on Ubuntu.

This GPU should be capable of 4K resolution, but it's unavailable.

Tried manually adding modeline with

Still fails to set 4K resolution.

Upgraded to signed kernel 5.19.0-28-generic #29~22.04.1-Ubuntu, added

Just got a new Lenovo Thinkpad and using Ubuntu 20.04, and I think I'm
seeing a very similar issue. After leaving the laptop on for so long
eventually a ton of the text menues and displays either show NO text at
all, or half of the characters are missing. I'll attempt a screenshot
the next time it happens, it doesn't take longer than a day it seems as
already reported.

I also use Discord so I wonder if that is part of the culprit as well.
Will try using without Discord for about a day.

I have found a simple logout/login is enough to fix all text menues. So
it doesn't seem a full reboot is strictly necessary.

I tried turning the TV off with the remote, then turning the TV back on.

Looks like the same (or similar) condition.

All the windows on the second display lost their geometry. I can see
them in the launcher view, but they are gone somewhere. Perhaps their
coordinates have traveled off-screen?

The setup here is critical to understanding the problem. A laptop is
connected via HDMI to a TV monitor. Two displays are thus available to
the OS. Everything works great both in mirror display and regular
display. At the end of day, I lock the user account and the display
manager (DM) tells the monitors to blank (sleep?). When I touch the DM
and login the laptop display livens up and looks good. However, the TV
display often doesn't and I need to wake up the TV with the TV control
stick. This works OK, and the second display comes back. And all the
windows associated with that display return from sleep OK. *HOWEVER*,
all the geometry for those windows (term windows is one example) are
lost. I can see the windows in the term overview, but I cant get to them
on the second display.

I have this on stock Ubuntu 20.04, but DON'T have gstreamer1.0-vaapi
installed. Is there another workaround? My work laptop (Dell Precision
5540) is completely unusable and keeps crashing to the login screen

This issue is only present to the best of my knowledge on the Dell XPS
9560 while connected to a docking station, in this case the Dell WD-15.
When logging in to the computer from a cold boot, the computer will go
to sleep immediately after logging in.  This issue does not happen if
the lid of the laptop is open, or if the computer is waking from sleep.

does not fill the screen at all when snapping the window to the right or
left side. There are large gaps on the right and bottom edges of the
terminal window in Wayland. On the same computer, with the same version
of gnome-terminal in an Xorg gnome-session or Xorg ubuntu-session, the
window fills screen space entirely and there is no problem. I am not
using display scaling or hidpi features at all, my display resolution is
set at default 1080p. This needs to be fixed or I'm ditching gnome-
terminal.

It appears that using Xorg instead of Wayland is the only way to fix
this problem on Ubuntu 17.10. For some odd reason, whenever I wake my
computer from suspend (especially after an extended period of time
asleep) using Gnome in a Wayland session (gnome-session and stock
ubuntu-session alike), my screen freezes completely on whatever was last
there before suspending and I can't get any IO response at all. Nothing,
the screen is totally frozen. I am also unable to exit into a recovery
shell or kill GDM or gnome-session/ubuntu-session locally. I also can't
seem to find any traces or indications for the freeze in the syslog, or
maybe I'm just not sure where to look. I believe this is a problem with
GDM on Wayland, not kernel related, as it happens on a totally stock
install and when I use an upgraded/downgraded kernel. It literally
necessitates restarting my computer. This problem is nonexistent when
using Xorg instead of Wayland with GDM. Anyone else have this issue on
Ubuntu 17.10 or figure out a solution better than simply switching to
Xorg? I should clarify that I am not using nvidia drivers, I'm using
Intel integrated graphics on a core-i7 5500U.

Ubuntu 17.10 uses gnome-session v3.26.1.
Expected behavior: When waking computer from suspend, expect GDM lock prompt 
and log back in.
What happened instead: When waking computer from suspend, screen and IO is 
completely frozen, necessitating a force-shutdown.

This file:
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/60x11-common_xdg_path
contains references to $DESKTOP_SESSION variable.

On one of my Ubuntu installs this variable contains: "plasma",
on the other it contains: "/usr/share/xsessions/plasma".

I don't know where either example comes from, but the upshot is that
paths are added to XDG_DATA_DIRS and XDG_CONFIG_DIRS that don't exist.
MANDATORY_PATH is also affected I believe, maybe others.

Surely a sanity check of the generated paths is in order. Seems
pointless to add non-existent ones.

$XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP looks like a replacement for $DESKTOP_SESSION, but
is that true?

Well, unfortunatly, upgrading to 1.8 disables both the bluetooth module
and touchscreen on my device(Asus T300 chi), leaving me with no input
options. I suppose that's a separate problem, but it's rather hard to
file. I'll try to find my adapter, borrow a USB keyboard from someone
and file it. I'll update this bug then, too.

I reinstalled the package, no dice. I then looked around for it, and
found that it had been renamed to old.libgbm1.so, along with the file it
linked to. I renamed both, removing the "old.", and now 3D works. It's
definitely still a bug though.

Будь ласка, підпишить петицію до Верховної Ради України з легалізації
наукових досліджень канабісу та його використання в медичній галузі:

Розпорядження Кабінету Міністрів України від 28 серпня 2013 р. № 735-р «Про
схвалення Стратегії державної політики щодо наркотиків на період
до 2020 року» має пункт «вивчення перспектив медичного застосування
канабіноїдів як анальгетиків та інших лікарських препаратів». Проте для
здійснення цього абсолютно нічого не зроблено.
В нас йде війна, а маріхуана це дуже добре знеболювальне та протизапальне.
Крім того, маріхуана це дуже добрі ліки проти ушкоджень мозку на кшталт
контузії. Також вона лікує посттравматичний синдром:

ефективністю? І найгірше, що не можна навіть проводити дослідження
канабіноїдів, щоб мати документальне підтвердження їхньої ефективності.
Треба негайно це виправити.

Наші вимоги грунтуються на досвіді багатьох провідних країн світу на кшталт
США, Канади, Ізраїлю, Чеської Республіки, Хорватії, тощо.

I am also having the invisible cursor problem after waking up from
suspend on HP Desktop AMD 64. I got the mouse cursor back by locking
with xscreensaver.

I ran the command using alt + f2

xscreensaver-command --lock

Cursor reappeared on lock screen and after entering password the cursor
was back.

Laptop is an Acer Aspire V5-552PG-X809.  AMD A10-5757M Processor with
Dual Graphics (Radeon HD 8560M embedded, and Radeon 8750M dedicated).
FGLRX driver was working fantastically prior to upgrade to Ubuntu 14.10.
After upgrade, after login to desktop Unity will not fully load (desktop
loads, but Dash and unity side bar does not).  FGLRXINFO reports no
devices found.

I have tried the FGLRX, FGLRX-UPDATES, and the latest driver straight
from AMD, none of them have worked for me.

This error start occurring for me after the upgrade to xserver-xorg-
video-intel (2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu2), but given the earlier occurence
this might just have been random. Seems to occur randomly while using
the desktop under load.

I had a  similar problem with Linux Mint 16 and Ubuntu 13.10 amd64.
Adding nomodeset to the 13.10 installer boot options (after the --, or
via the F6 add options method) fixed that install. Haven't tried this
with Mint.

13.04 booted without any changes required.

I have very similar issues to many here. It happens when using VirtualBox, 
Firefox (occasionally), or most obviously, when watching a video. It happens on 
VLC media player and with Ubuntu Movie player. I have done something for a 
couple days to stop the freezing. It works, however the workaround is not 
ideal, and not everyone here will be able to do it. It all depends on your 
machine. I built my PC myself, so I have a lot more control over my computer 
than those with laptops do. 
This is my desktop:
-Asus-P8B75-M/CSM Motherboard
-Intel Ivy Bridge- Core i5 3570K CPU 
-8GBs of Corsair XMS3 RAM @1333MHz
-500W Corsair Power Supply
-1TB Toshiba/Hitachi HDD 7200RPM
-Cooler Master Hyper-TX3 CPU HSF (Probably doesn't matter--but included for 
good measure)
*I AM using Intel HD Integrated Graphics 4000
My workaround--tested heavily--is disabling C3 and C6 states in the BIOS CPU 
advanced options menu. I leave C1E Halt and Intel Enhanced Speed Step 
Technology enabled. This drastically increases power usage, therefore 
increasing temperature, and I'm sure it's increasing voltage and current. I 
have no way to monitor that within Ubuntu, all I can measure is CPU frequency 
and temperature. My idle temps, which are usually 36-39 Celsius, have increased 
to 41-44 Celsius, which is quite drastic if you think about it. I'm most 
worried about wasted energy, which doesn't just cost me, but also costs the 
environment.
If any of you have control over c-states in your BIOS, turning off anything 
other than C1E should stop the complete freezes. I should note that my freezes 
stay frozen until I intervene by turning the power supply off. If I'm watching 
a video on local storage(or even on the internet), when it freezes, the audio 
from the video stutters and repeats itself. Think of a skipping CD player (CD? 
what's that?? lol), and thats how it sounds . The keyboard and mouse (both USB) 
don't respond at all. There are no blinking lights on the keyboard. The image 
that was on screen before it froze, stays on screen, and again-- if there was 
any type of audio playing(music or video), the same sound skips over and over.
If anyone has any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

I have a similar problem with my eeePc 1005HAB. At first I couldn't see
a pattern but I have noticed, in my case, that crashing occurs more
frequently when opening the dash, hud, or changing the volume (volume
notification pops up). Could compiz be part of the problem?  These
things are not always what causes the crash, one time I was coding in
vim with the default terminal when the system froze for about a second
(mouse and buttons irresponsive) and then shot me back to the login
screen.

My screen completely freezes in a variety of situations. It happens most
often when I open a new website in Google Chrome, but it has also
happened while saving a document in OpenOffice Calc.

When the screen freezes, Ubuntu becomes entirely unresponsive. The only
way I've found to move forward is to press the reset button.

There seems to be some correlation between how recently I've updated
packages related to my video card and the frequency of the freezing. I
apologize for not being able to provide more specific information.

I can propose ugly fix.

Create map of keyboard in memory with english layout and remap it to
current layout when it switched. And when pressed shortcut, just change
pressed keys by map.

The Xorg package seems to fail, causing a brief black screen before
being returned to the login screen. Any information being worked on such
as user level applications lose their data (root processes which are not
based on xorg seem unaffected). Happens when loading into either Unity
or Gnome 3.

And videocard very hot. I can't touch laptop in bottom - I feel pain.
Videocard became very hot, then I see glitches, then system go into
lightDM login screen (especially when I watch fullscreen flashvideo in
Firefox)

I removed developer's drivers and installed latest driver by jockey.
Ubuntu started work faster, but it still very slow. On attached screen you see 
top window when I opened gedit without any file and started to scroll (nothing 
redraws).

Some interesting. When I scroll in transmission I see huge processor's loading 
by it's process. Switching between transmission's windows is slow too.
In some situations I see huge loading by compiz's process.

Situation is very bed. Nvidia proprietary driver works slower than
opensource Nouveau.

 and that's quite old.  I wonder if your installation got corrupted?

 Anyway, this is the cause of your performance loss.  From Xorg.0.log it
 indicates this old nvidia is not compatible with the xserver, so is
 running in some sort of compatibility mode:

 [   625.647] (WW) NVIDIA: This server has an unsupported input driver ABI
 version (have 16.0, need  14.0).  The driver will continue to load, but
 may behave strangely.
 [   626.504] (II) NVIDIA dlloader X Driver  285.05.33  Thu Jan 19 15:25:37

 Why don't you try completely removing and purging nvidia from your
 system, and then reinstalling -nvidia through jockey again.  Doublecheck
 that your /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 295 or
 similar.

Firefox works very very very slow (100% processor's loading by Xorg). I
can't work with this slideshow. If it will not be fixed in release, I

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

When trying to boot the LiveCD, or an Ubuntu 10.10 installation upgraded
from 10.04, the computer completely freezes. I can get in by adding
nomodeset to the boot options. After installing the proprietary nVidia
driver, everything works as expected.

I've tested this with both 10.10, and the latest daily of 11.04.

This is the same as a bug I reported earlier, bug #632231, but since
that one got off-track I've marked it as invalid, and submitted this
report with what I hope is a clearer description of the bug, and hope to
have a good cooperation and get it solved.
