[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
This is not an issue with 12.04. I have experienced this consistently in 16.04, 18.04 and 20.04 I have nvidia, so the common theme seems to be nvidia (however, may not even be that). I have tried in vain to find a fix for the last 4 years and have now learned to live with it (save frequently, etc). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
This bug has starting affecting one of my production servers. I would classify it as critical. I turned off and uninstalled the screensaver on this computer, but apparently that is not enough to prevent Ubuntu from going to sleep. It will go to sleep by itself even if there is NO SCREENSAVER application installed on the operating system! That is a CRITICAL BUG!!! So, in an effert to stop the computer from going to sleep, I installed XScreenSaver, and turned it to never go to sleep, ever settings. Now I have to start XScreenSaver at startup, to try to PREVENT this machine from going to sleep. But it doesn't work. Every few days, I'll wake up and be logged out of the machine, server is down, not live to the world. Downtime caused by this bug. If I then try to log back in, it IMMEDIATELY logs me back out! I have to cold restart the whole machine to get back in. This bug is so critical that I may have to migrate away from Ubuntu if there is no forthcoming solution. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/980519 Title: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/980519/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
I also got this bug recently. At random clicks on random programs (Chrome, web site links, etc), I would get logged out (black screen that flutters constantly between the login until I click on the mouse, move the mouse, type something, or in some cases wait long enough, in which a stable login screen will appear to allow me to log back in). However, I was able to fix this issue by not using unity. Instead I installed gnome and logged out and back in with gnome (I'm using the class with no effects version). Wow got similar behavior as described in this bug just yesterday after an update. So when I log in and the Unity desktop should become visible the Welcome screen comes back asking again for a password. If I try XFCE I do get the desktop but when I try to start any programs there is a crash and the Welcome screen comes up asking for the password. I use Nvidia Quadro card and Ubuntu 13.10. Looks like this bug is affecting me as well. Like may others, I am also running 12.04.1 + nvidia, with 310.14 proprietary drivers and 3.2.0-34.53 kernel. But I am experiencing it under Gnome Classic. From my recent observations, it ALWAYS happens in the same way: * always on startup (I log in automatically) * and after pressing ENTER in a application, be it Google Chrome (the address field, or search field in gmail) or Gnome Terminal. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 973096 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096 I have the same problem on a Fujitsu P3110 netbook with 12.04,Classic- Gnome (no effects), 256G SSD, no nvidia card. After a fresh install with 12.04.1, I got the problem a day or so later. It has been running with no Xorg crash so far after the following change: (1) Created a xorg.conf with sudo X :1 -configure which creates a xorg.conf.new in the ~ directory. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 973096 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096 This has nothing to do with NVidia. I have an Intel 4500 GMA. I think I've finally reached the end of my rope with Ubuntu. Just when it's working for you, they break it. Unity worked very well on my ACER 1410 laptop under 11.04, surprisingly, though it was expected to have many bugs. But instead of it get refined over the last year, it seems to be just getting more unstable. I'd hoped to stay with the LTS for awhile, but I probably won't be staying with Ubuntu at all. I could never get Unity to work reliably on my desktop, and have long since replace it with KDE, which has been almost rock solid stable. I don't like the UI as well, but it has it's own strengths. I've also noticed the logouts seem to happen when I'm using the web browser (Chromium), though I haven't verified that. Almost every time it boots, or resumes from suspend, I get an error message asking if I want to submit a report. Clicking continue only leads me in an endless circle of pop messages. I've tried to be patient with Ubuntu, and had high hopes for it. But since upgrading to 12.04, I've gone a month without printing, suffered scores of random log-outs ( with the resulting lost data and time), and constant error messages. A fresh install didn't help at all. There's the possibility of sticking with Kubuntu, but the frequent indifference shown to major bugs like this has left me very disenchanted. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/980519 Title: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/980519/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 973096 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096 I have this autologout problem daily. Its down right unacceptable that nothing is being done about it. My wife runs a photography business and it will just randomly log out on her several times per day while editing in Gimp - it happens randomly here, not only when watching videos or using firefox. Here is a segfault from a crash that just happened. [code] Jul 27 12:55:57 main-desktop kernel: [11597.562389] Xorg[1443]: segfault at b4f04000 ip b48453fe sp bfb634b0 error 7 in nvidia_drv.so[b4787000+706000] [/code] -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/980519 Title: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/980519/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 973096 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096 This is definitely not related to Unity 3D, because I switched to 2D last night, and already this morning it logged me out without warning. This time I was attempting to type a comment on Facebook beneath a photo in Opera. I had not used flash at all since last boot. The first 2 characters of my comment appeared, then before the third had appeared on the screen, I was logged out. I'm also post #97; I have Intel Integrated Graphics on a C2D processor.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 973096 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096 I request to have this bug un-marked as a dupe of Bug #973096 and have it separately triaged. Bug #973096 is definitely related to the graphics drivers. I'm fairly certain this is not a duplicate bug, as my crashing seems to be unrelated to video but related instead to the networking. No problems with my GeForce, video, or accelerated graphics, but crashes do occur when I'm just fiddling on the desktop or doing stuff that isn't graphics-related.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 973096 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096 This also effects me. I have a Fujitsu T5010 with Intel video. For me, it happens quite randomly. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 973096 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096 Also posted this in the dupe thread but since it's related to the most recent comment I'm posting here too. I've also noticed that this bug is only present when there's high network activity. If I'm not running any torrents or streaming anything the system will stay logged into the same session indefinitely -- I can watch x264 video, play openGL games, etc, with no crashy behaviour... But if I'm downloading lots of torrents the session will log out randomly even if I'm not doing anything graphics-intensive (eg, 5 mins ago it logged me out while the only things open were qbittorrent and a nautilus window). I think we've been barking up the wrong tree with the graphics drivers. I'd suggest looking into the network drivers.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 973096 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096 I'm posting here (rather than the duplicate) only because I seem to be noticing that the only constant is significant network activity (loading a page, launching pan newsreader, bittorrent, etc.) I'm not 100% certain, but I can't recall the machine ever crashing while I was, say, just playing a game or working on a document.
