[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2020-12-18 Thread Amitabh
This is not an issue with 12.04.
I have experienced this consistently in 16.04, 18.04 and 20.04
I have nvidia, so the common theme seems to be nvidia (however, may not even be
that).

I have tried in vain to find a fix for the last 4 years and have now
learned to live with it (save frequently, etc). It sucks but not enough
to go back to Windows

Recently I plugged in a 3rd monitor to my desktop and the issue seems to
have increased

I too have this bug on a faily new PC. I have experienced it many times,
typically one an hour when using Android Studio. It can be doing
anything it seems, I have not got a pattern. I oculd be selecting a

It has also happened to me with when Android Studio is not open. I have
LTS 14.04 Ubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2015-04-03 Thread Ryan
This bug has starting affecting one of my production servers. I would
classify it as critical. I turned off and uninstalled the screensaver
on this computer, but apparently that is not enough to prevent Ubuntu
from going to sleep. It will go to sleep by itself even if there is NO
SCREENSAVER application installed on the operating system! That is a
CRITICAL BUG!!!

So, in an effert to stop the computer from going to sleep, I installed
XScreenSaver, and turned it to never go to sleep, ever settings. Now I
have to start XScreenSaver at startup, to try to PREVENT this machine
from going to sleep. But it doesn't work.

Every few days, I'll wake up and be logged out of the machine, server is
down, not live to the world. Downtime caused by this bug. If I then try
to log back in, it IMMEDIATELY logs me back out! I have to cold restart
the whole machine to get back in.

This bug is so critical that I may have to migrate away from Ubuntu if
there is no forthcoming solution.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2015-02-05 Thread Quang Luong
I also got this bug recently. At random clicks on random programs
(Chrome, web site links, etc), I would get logged out (black screen that
flutters constantly between the login until I click on the mouse, move
the mouse, type something, or in some cases wait long enough, in which a
stable login screen will appear to allow me to log back in). However, I
was able to fix this issue by not using unity. Instead I installed
gnome and logged out and back in with gnome (I'm using the class with no
effects version). Hope this helps.

I have exactly the same problem as eMKi (mkisovec), but with Ubuntu 14.04 and

The problem appeared today, may be due to a recently updated package.

2014-08-01 Thread eMKi
Wow got similar behavior as described in this bug just yesterday after
an update.

So when I log in and the Unity desktop should become visible the Welcome screen
comes back asking again for a password.
If I try XFCE I do get the desktop but when I try to start any programs there
is a crash and the Welcome screen comes up asking for the password.

I use Nvidia Quadro card and Ubuntu 13.10.

So the bug might not be fixed. Before the update I didn't not have this
issue.

Kind regards.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2013-10-21 Thread David Scott
I now have this issue, I have noticed that is only occuring with the
Google Chrome/Chromium packages. I also noticed that this error resets
Xorg. I have included the Xorg.0.log file where the Seg Fault is.

OS : Ubuntu 12.04
Video Driver : NVidia version 319 (Recommended / Stable)
CPU : 8 Core Dual Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5506 @ 2.13GHz
Memory : 16 G

To replicate this error / known bug; simply log in, and start google chrome or
chromium, count 2 or 3 seconds and whamo, seg fault.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2013-07-11 Thread Riyugi, Murakami
Ubuntu 12.04.2. Ubuntu logs off randomly.
Something unusual happends in my case. When
the screen goes blank, if you do not move
the mouse or press any key, wait for some time,
and then slide your finger on the mousepad, the
system goes back to normal. But if the screen goes
blank (you panic) and press any key immediately
or do some mouse clicks, it goes to the login
screen.

2013-04-30 Thread LexLythius
Same problem as sandeproop above and others.
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, kernel 3.2.0-40, amd64
AMD Radeon HD 3300 (open source drivers; had proprietary installed but purged
them as per
wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Precise_Installation_Guide#Removing_Catalyst.2Ffglrx
 ).

Apparently, the X server had a segmentation fault, see attached log.

While working suddenly system is logged off and all the work which is not saved

There is no particular steps to reproduce this.
But this is happening for me at least once a day.

I was having screen artifacts.

Switching from the proprietary Nvidia version current to post-release
updates fixed the issue (for 30 minutes now). Hopefully will continue

2013-01-08 Thread Javier Schwersensky
Thank you to those who filed the bug report and those who worked on a
solution. My NVIDIA driver was stable until I made a change in the xorg
file (to use two screens). Then the random logouts began with certain
applications only (Skype and VirtualBox most notably). The solution
proposed here seem to have fixed the issue. I am running 12.04 LTS
64-bit, ASUS laptop with NVIDIA video card, cinnamon desktop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2012-12-16 Thread Gareth Fare
I had this problem today, If I start Google Chrome or Chromium it logs
me out of X.

uname -a gives

Linux garethf-System-Product-Name 3.5.0-19-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Tue
Nov 13 17:48:01 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

and I'm using propriety NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-310.19

The Xorg.0.log showed a NULL deref in /usr/bin/Xorg. I can only guess
that some of the kernel headers must have updated yesterday as it was
working fine, but not enough for the nVidia driver not to work. I fixed
it by rebuilding the propriety nVidia drivers. All seems to be working
fine now, might be related to this so posting just in case it helps
anyone.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2012-12-15 Thread Marcin Domański
Looks like this bug is affecting me as well. Like may others, I am also
running 12.04.1 + nvidia, with 310.14 proprietary drivers and
3.2.0-34.53 kernel. But I am experiencing it under Gnome Classic.

From my recent observations, it ALWAYS happens in the same way:
* always on startup (I log in automatically)
* and after pressing ENTER in a application, be it Google Chrome (the address
field, or search field in gmail) or Gnome Terminal. It looks like the trigger
is always the ENTER key. I key in a URL, or a command in the terminal and press
ENTER, and then it happens, always.

After logging in again, the problem disappears.

Still haven't gotten a fix to this issue. My Xorg.conf doesn't have any
xfs font paths. This started as soon as upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
Anyone with a vetted fix???

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2012-12-02 Thread zzecool
I have the same exact problem in 12.10 running the latest updates

Im crashing to the login screen without any errors to the Xorg.log
... whenever i try to play a video .

What i did is uninstall my nvidia 310 drivers ( that was working
perfectly , i only got this problem today though i was using 310 for
almost a month) and used the open source ubuntu default nouveau and the
problem is still here .

So there is nothing to do with the nvidia proprietary drivers. The
culprit is somthing else and it isnt fixed yet although the bug says
fixed.

2012-10-23 Thread Bart Janssens
Same effect here when using chrome, mostly with videos.
Its an upgrade to 12.10 of a recent 12.04 install nvidia vidcard.
I haven't enabled the nvidia drivers yet, running the default nouveau after the
upgrade, i'll try purging whatever is left of nvidia pakages and report back.

2012-10-23 Thread Bart Janssens
After some more searching I've located what caused my problem. I had burg
installed (graphical boot) and it did not get updated so it just booted the 3.2
kernel instead of the 3.5 one installed by ubuntu 12.10.
Ofcourse this triggers a lot of problems :) Now that I booted the 3.5 kernel no
more sudden restarts.

2012-09-24 Thread Jonathan Mullins
The fix released on 11th Sep 2012 stopped the random logoffs occurring
for me - however since updating my machine yesterday (24th Sep 2012) the
problem is back again - I see weird pixelated artefacts on my desktop
after logging in, and then get logged off shortly after launching Google
Chrome. After logging back in the problem is gone. Let me know if you
want some log files etc.

2012-09-16 Thread Risto Ronkka
I did update yesterday (14th September) and after that when I try to
start Firefox, Thunderbird or Details, (12.04LTS) system logs out. I can
start Libreoffice with no problem. Google earth shuts down but does not
logout the system. I have old Intel +, nvidia+benq system. When I
tried to fix the problem as #124 says and tried logout, there was
messages about missing keyring password but logout did happen. Then I
tried to change the resolution, disable network with no effect.
Something odd looking was on login screen, resolution changed to high
resolution but changed back to lower resolution.

Don't throw a comment just because you see a crash. The issue with
Nvidia have been fixed in the latest nvidia drivers. If you are on fglrx
then you are totally facing a different issue, try switching between the
drivers and see if that proves of any help to you. me too in this type
of bug reports is useless.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2012-09-12 Thread Riku
I have this kind of problem too. When I power on my computer, auto log
in to Ubuntu 12.04,viivaviivaviivaviiva then there are few little
flickering lines top of the screen. I can open software and do pretty
much anything, but when I push ENTER first time, it logs out to log on
screen and after that the problem does not exist until I shut down my
computer and start over.

I have AMD HD4850, not Nvidia, I'm using those drivers from the
'Additional Drivers'.

2012-09-09 Thread Kostas Manetakis
I installed Linux Mint 13, the Mate variety. I don't seem to get the
crash anymore. The system looks pretty stable.

Interestingly, after installing the light-themes package (for a
...ubuntu-like look), I was immediately able to reproduce the crash.
Removing light-themes or simply using the standard Mint themes fixed the
problem.

Any clues here?

The issue may be related to the one reported on Debian:

Tried downgrading the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package to

This bug also affects me. I have a core i5 2430M using the intel driver.

Initially I thought this to be a problem with the intel drivers, but
seeing people with amd and nvidia cards have the same problem I don't
know where to point my finger. Its not the DE, as this has happened with
both KDE, unity and gnome 3 in ubuntu 12.04. In dmesg lines like these
appear:

Xorg[11692]: segfault at 7ffb0011 ip 7ffbc0ab11b8 sp
7fff56de3090 error 4 in Xorg[7ffbc0989000+1f]

The crashes seem to happen randomly, although more frequently just after
waking from suspend, often just seconds after unlocking the screen.

The reporter of this bug provided a log file in comment #13 showing he

If you are not using NVIDIA then please log a new bug using the ubuntu-

This has nothing to do with NVidia. I have an Intel 4500 GMA. I think
I've finally reached the end of my rope with Ubuntu. Just when it's
working for you, they break it. Unity worked very well on my ACER 1410
laptop under 11.04, surprisingly, though it was expected to have many
bugs. But instead of it get refined over the last year, it seems to be
just getting more unstable. I'd hoped to stay with the LTS for awhile,
but I probably won't be staying with Ubuntu at all.

I could never get Unity to work reliably on my desktop, and have long
since replace it with KDE, which has been almost rock solid stable. I
don't like the UI as well, but it has it's own strengths.

I've also noticed the logouts seem to happen when I'm using the web
browser (Chromium), though I haven't verified that.

Almost every time it boots, or resumes from suspend, I get an error
message asking if I want to submit a report. Clicking continue only
leads me in an endless circle of pop messages.

I've tried to be patient with Ubuntu, and had high hopes for it. But
since upgrading to 12.04, I've gone a month without printing, suffered
scores of random log-outs ( with the resulting lost data and time), and
constant error messages. A fresh install didn't help at all. There's the
possibility of sticking with Kubuntu, but the frequent indifference
shown to major bugs like this has left me very disenchanted.

Ok, guys. There seem to be no reasonable solution to this problem.

Here I am giving an unreasonable one: install kde and use it (I did it and it
works). If the problem is solved (what I doubt will happen soon) then u can
move back to unity or gnome by simply choosing it in the menu. Maybe it is even
better to reinstall and start using kubuntu.
In any case, it seems clear that solution to our problems in ubuntu will not
happen soon.

Greetings!

Same issue, but I do NOT have a nvidia card. I have Intel embedded on a
Lenove T410.

I've been running 12.04 since it came out, but I've just started to have
this problem a couple of weeks ago or less.

This usually happens right after I wake my computer from sleep; just
after the computer wakes, I log in, and then it suddenly will log out,
closing all my open applications shortly there after.

I should also note, the about 2 months ago, I started noticing that it
takes a really long time from my computer to wake from sleep, like a
minute and a half. Then I get some watch dog errors in the terminal just
before the GUI comes back up.

Thanks,
Ryan

it separately triaged.

Bug #973096 is definitely related to the graphics drivers.

I'm fairly certain this is not a duplicate bug, as my crashing seems to
be unrelated to video but related instead to the networking. No problems
with my GeForce, video, or accelerated graphics, but crashes do occur
when I'm just fiddling on the desktop or doing stuff that isn't
graphics-related.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2012-07-21 Thread 1337ing Disorder
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 973096 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096

Also posted this in the dupe thread but since it's related to the most
recent comment I'm posting here too.

I've also noticed that this bug is only present when there's high
network activity.

If I'm not running any torrents or streaming anything the system will
stay logged into the same session indefinitely -- I can watch x264
video, play openGL games, etc, with no crashy behaviour... But if I'm
downloading lots of torrents the session will log out randomly even if
I'm not doing anything graphics-intensive (eg, 5 mins ago it logged me
out while the only things open were qbittorrent and a nautilus window).

I think we've been barking up the wrong tree with the graphics drivers.
I'd suggest looking into the network drivers.

I'm on intel gma 4500mhd and this bug also affects me. Why is this a
duplicate of bug #973096 when other people without nvidia cards are
affected?

I'm posting here (rather than the duplicate) only because I seem to be
noticing that the only constant is significant network activity (loading
a page, launching pan newsreader, bittorrent, etc.) I'm not 100%
certain, but I can't recall the machine ever crashing while I was, say,
just playing a game or working on a document. At a bare minimum there
was something downloading in the background while I did other stuff,
then... boom.

I've also subscribed to this bug:
