Kimm,
Welcome to the plutocracy. Every issue that people believe is a local reaction to crisis, is being orchestrated by a multi-national agenda. Often this agenda looks like it is coming from local "Friends groups." This is what happens when secrecy and censorship are normalized.People don't realize how completely Philadelphia is actually controlled from elsewhere, and how mass bullshit manipulates local groups into buying into the conspiracy.
Let's try togive support toany neighbors, whoonly now realize how a plutocracy functions as the police state tightens. I went through the sadness a long time ago!

RE: [UC] tree down (subject change--manhole cover cracked)

2007-09-14 Thread Bill Sanderson
While we are in this part of the neighborhood--I wonder if anybody else has
noticed the manhole cover at the eastern (48th) street end of, I think,
Warrington--but maybe it is the next street north. It is marked KT--which
is either a foundry mark or telephone??-and is in the street at the
intersection. It is cracking badly, and looks to me as though a truck or
something heavy might well break it the rest of the way--and leave basically
an open hole.

I noticed this as I made my way home on Thursday, walking in the bike lane
as I often do because I trip over the cracks in the sidewalk

Anyway, I made a note to myself to try to figure out how to bring this to
the attention of the streets department, but maybe someone else reading this
is a) closer to the situation, and or b) knows what number to call!

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY
PHILADELPHIA WILL VOTE
On Election Day (Tuesday, May 15th), every Philadelphian will have an
opportunity to vote on whether to keep casinos 1500 feet from schools,
places of worship, parks and homes. But it won't be in the voting booth.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court placed an injunction on the city removing
Question #1 from the ballot, so we've created our own citizens' election
process. We're giving Philadelphia three ways to vote on Tuesday, May 15th:

securely online at www.PhillysBallotBox.org; or
via voter hotline at 215-925-6380; or
at a polling place near you (visit www.PhillysBallotBox.org to find the
closest voting location)
Legislation introduced in City Council is awaiting the result of the
citizens election. And at least one ballot box has been placed in every
state representative's district, along with other high-traffic locations
throughout the city, to let them know what their constituency wants.

Find your nearest ballot box and get more information at:

www.PhillysBallotBox.org

Warmly,

- Philly's Ballot Box

ps: If you want to be reminded about the vote on May 15th, go to

This is a pro.

I had a visit last night from a relatively short woman wearing dark
clothes--really not much distinguishable about her--seeking money to get back to
Delaware. I suggested that I could call the police to assist her, and she
was quick to state that she'd already talked to them and they couldn't provide
assistance to get her to Delaware.

One characteristic of a good con is a ready response to even the most
mean-spirited counters the mark can make--and that characteristic alone is a
tip-off, I think.

Recent tattoos or piercing disqualify you from giving blood. If you are a woman, you must not have ever had relations with a man who has had relations with another man or you are not able to give, either. We tried to organize a staff blood drive here and gave up after realizing that - between the travel and food restrictions, body art and relationship questions - restaurant staff are not the most qualified to donate blood.

When I told him he'd stopped by already with the same story, he said all he wanted was to call the locksmith to make sure they'd be at his car. I asked what they're number was (the locksmith) he gave me a bogus number (someone's home answering machine), when I said it was a home machine he said "Oh, they must be at my car" and took off.

He was white, I can't remember what color his hair was-maybe reddish-brownand short. He'd been told bya neighbor's sonthat I was a good person, that I would surely help him. Curiously, the story was the samewallet and keys locked in car, and he needed the money for a locksmith. I help every dog and cat that comes my way, but I'd learned to be wary of people. I'll give anyone food, but not money. I was so appalled that someone was obviously in need of warm clothes, and hopedhe had some of those in the alleged car. I went to the office of my church a block away and called the nearest locksmith, who said no onehad called inabout a car at that location, and furthermore that no locksmith would do the job for less than $50.I was disappointed, felt a little hurt that someone would put me to such trouble, but allit costwas a couple hoursand 2 quarters for the parking meter.Later, when I told my neighbor that her son had sent the guy to me, she said she'd actually given the sameperson $20 a couple months before!

slightly different and mutually contradictory versions of the story about three
months apart. He seemed amazed that I recognized him the second time.

I'm getting the impression this area is going through a cycle of petty
criminal activity. I've seen a few more instances of car windows smashed than in
previous years, and I've suddenly started finding beer bottles on my front lawn
- again, in greater numbers than usual. The reoccurence of this story may be
another piecee of the pattern.

It's a shame, because there are people out there who legitimately could use
a handout or just some person-to-person help. But for a while I'll be more
skeptical than perhaps I should.

Probably it was two years ago that a young guy came to my door on a

learned to be wary of people. I'll give anyone food, but not
money. I was so appalled that someone was obviously in need of

Q: Will someone
please clarify this word (gentrification), or what you
are talking

about, and end my confusion.

A: Personally, I dont know why gentrification is
still in the subject

line based on the content either.
Reverse-Gentrification is more accurate.

Affluent
people were replaced by working class who are being replaced

by Yups.

GENTRIFICATION

The
restoration and upgrading of deteriorated urban property by

middle-class or affluent people, often resulting in
displacement of

lower-income people.

Additional Response:

There is a more
interesting story about Penn-trification ,which

through the Penn mortgage
program has turned U-City into a Penn Ghetto.

Obviously, not the worse thing that could have happened.

Ghetto: A section of a city occupied by a minority group who live

there especially because of social, economic,
or legal pressure.

About 60% of the people
walking in the community are sporting

Penn related I-D tags
around their neck, proudly displayed as a fashion

accessory, I guess to let the Penn
Police (and everyone else) know they

are cleared for
passage.

(Im sure the tags
are needed to get in and out of their work buildings,

but you get the picture)

Your assessment that the dogs are causing the dust and lack of grass
growth in the bowl is not accurate. In fact, most of the dog activity
takes place in the northern end of the bowl, which is quite green, while
most of the dust and lack of grass growth is in the middle, which is not
where most dog owners gravitate.

I think the cause is due to:
a) lack of adequate draining of the bowl, reducing strong growth
of grass
b) continued and constant use of the bowl by all persons,
including dog owners

The dogs are not causing the bowl to whither. It is caused by the
extensive use of the park by park patrons.

Clark Park, I'm concerned about the serious impact they are having on the
condition of the bowl. They have stripped it of much of its grass and
turned it literally into a dust bowl, which in turn becomes a mud bowl when
wet. I've heard from several people offline that they are concerned for the
children trying to play soccer on hardpack or mud and just in general that the
bowl is being trashed by overuse of dogs.I think there needs to be
some serious discussion by all of us and the FoCP in particular as to this
situation.Do we create a small fenced-in dog park?Do we have
volunteers enforce specific dog rules and usage, agreed upon by all, for the
bowl?Do we ban dogs from the bowl? What is the bowl's primary purpose?
Is it for people or dogs?Should dog owners pay for the upkeep of the bowl,
like bathers at the Jersey Shore?Think about it. The park is for
everyone, but if a single constituency is spoiling it for others, then

The point is that the bowl needs attention and dog owners are certainly a big
part of the problem so they need to be a big part of the solution.

Soccer players are a big part of the problem, as are the frisbee throwers,
the grass loungers and dancers during concerts, football players, etc.

As tax payers, leashed-dog owners are already using the park as they are
entitled to, so it seems unfair to double tax them for something already
paid for.

My recent post suggesting a fenced in dog area, possibly supported by the
Hack money, was pretty much ignored except for the response from FoCP that
the issue is too divisive (as if the non-existence of a dog park is any
less so) and, subsequently, ignored.

Thanks,

I'll grant that it's not all related to dog usage, but I stood for several minutes last night watching the dogs, owners, etc. to look at where they were and how far they roamed.

Almost all of them were concentrated in the northern end as you say, but several dogs were roaming in the middle and everybody, dogs and owners were standing in dirt. There is no grass where they congregate. Some owners sit on the grass a few feet away from their dogs - ironic that they don't sit on the dirt created by their pets don't you think?

The point is that the bowl needs attention and dog owners are certainly a big part of the problem so they need to be a big part of the solution.

The bowl and the dogs are actually two separate issues.

Frankly, the dustiness of the Bowl has very little to do with dogs.
Remember, the Bowl is a large, flat area with very few trees, which
means a) it's going to be used for things which require large, flat open
spaces, and b) fewer leaves to trap and hold the moisture in the soil.

The Bowl is used for a lot of activities, and a lot of those activities
involve human beings stamping about, placing about one to two-hundred
pounds of pressure on foot-soles considerably larger than a dogs' paws.
_If_ the Bowl's dustiness is a result of its current use, then the Youth
Soccer League probably has a far greater impact than the dogs do.

And in defense of the dogs, they are more likely to fertilize the bowl
area. Last I checked, children don't shit on the ground anywhere near as
much.

But there is a provision in the Clark Park Renewal Plan to have the some
of Bowl's sides regraded, mainly to enable rain water to drain closer to
the center. I don't recall the exact details (I'm hoping it's just the
east side, leaving the west side nice and steep for sledding fans), and
it's difficult to say if and when this may be implemented, but that is a
concern that's being addressed.

For those of you who seem very eager to discuss the Census, but are
too lazy to do the homework, this is how the Census defines a
housing unit:

Housing unit
A house, an apartment, a mobile home or trailer, a group of rooms, or
a single room occupied as separate living quarters, or if vacant,
intended for occupancy as separate living quarters. Separate living
quarters are those in which the occupants live separately from any
other individuals in the building and which have direct access from
outside the building or through a common hall. For vacant units, the
criteria of separateness and direct access are applied to the
intended occupants whenever possible.

Owner-occupied housing unit
A housing unit is owner occupied if the owner or co-owner lives in
the unit even if it is mortgaged or not fully paid for.

Renter-occupied housing unit
All occupied units which are not owner occupied, whether they are
rented for cash rent or occupied without payment of cash rent, are
classified as renter-occupied.

So a single building with five apartments is counted as five housing
units, now go on and do the math.
