[SlimDevices: Unix] Squeezeboxserver on Suse 10 won't start
Hi, I downloaded and tried to install the new version 7.4 on my Suse 10 system. Before the rpm update I erased the original installation of squeezecenter-7.3.4-0.1.28402 When I try to start squeezeboxserver it's running for a few seconds, then crashes. The program outputs some error messages. I reinstalled 7.3.4-0.1.28402, which works fine for me. music:/home/voellenk # rpm -Uvh squeezeboxserver-7.4.1-0.1.28758.noarch.rpm warning: squeezeboxserver-7.4.1-0.1.28758.noarch.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 4123722a Preparing...### [100%] 1:squeezeboxserver ### [100%] Point your web browser to http://music:9000/ to configure SqueezeBox Server. music:/home/voellenk # music:/home/voellenk # /etc/init.d/squeezeboxserver status unused music:/home/voellenk # /etc/init.d/squeezeboxserver start Starting Squeezebox Server: done music:/home/voellenk # Your locale was detected as C, you may have problems with non-Latin filenames. [SlimDevices: Unix] Problems with Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger
I decided today to update my outdated Slimserver to SqueezeboxCenter 7.4 on my little MP3 server which runs Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger, but unfortunately, this venture failed completely (Server restarts over and over again). So I decided to install SqueezeCenter 7.3 instead, which kinda works, but I can't configure the server since the web interface doesn't load when I try to access it from my desktop PC. There is no error message and it displays something like SqueezeCenter is loading, but nothing happens after this. I can't find any hint in the logfiles and the server itself is running. Indeed for some reason the scanner found all of my MP3s and playlists, so I'm like 90% there, but still I'd like to configure some thing in the web interface. Maxbe related: I can't get the ShutdownServer script to run by simply copying it the Plugins folder (and setting user rights) as it worked for SlimServer. It is not shown at all under Extras. BTW: where is the configuration stored? For SlimServer it was /etc/slimserver/slimserver.pref, but I can't find any file like this for the SqueezeCenter. -- 0xdeadbeef 0xdeadbeef's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2287 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68992 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

The transition from 7.3 to 7.4 on Debian/Ubuntu was a bit rough in the beta days, but I would expect a clean install to work directly. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] 7.4 perl modules
OK - this is an interim update. I've downloaded everything from http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/slim/7.4/trunk/vendor/CPAN/ Then I edited the buildme.sh file to comment out lines 18-23 so it doesn't run the architecture check. At this point buildme.sh will run and do its stuff. It fails on the DBD::mysql module and GD module, so to get a complete run I've commented out the following 2 lines; 146 #build DBD::mysql ... 150 #build GD Obviously these issues need resolving but I'll have a crack at these tomorrow. -- Blue_Atom Blue_Atom's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7699 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68589 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Problems with Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger
It kinda worked flawlessly apart from the very first scan which kinda failed for some reason and reported only 10% of my albums. An update scan fixed this, but still most of the covers were missing. The third scan (delete db, complete rebuild) now seems to have worked correctly. Guess this will be the last time that I install Linux though. It's cool that it's free and all, but it completely sucks that you can't simply update an application without risking to destroy or being forced to update the whole system just for one application. It's also unbelievable that the repositories are deleted so soon. -- 0xdeadbeef 0xdeadbeef's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2287 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68992 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

It's also unbelievable that the repositories are deleted so soon. Which repositories do you mean, the Ubuntu ones? or the Logitech ones for your ancient Ubuntu 5.10? In either case, I'm not sure I agree with your complaint. If you want long term support, you should be running Debian, not Ubuntu. For 99% of the time, they are the same, but Debian is all about stability and long term support, whereas Ubuntu is about a new version every six months and supporting the latest and greatest stuff. Your 5.10 is ancient, specifically four and a half years old. When I was doing serious Windows development, I would schedule time to do a format c: and reinstall from the CD every six months or so. The SqueezeBoxServer 7.4 was one of the more difficult ones, I've been running it (under various names) for five or so years. Usually only the integer number changes are this painful. wasn't there a bad PGP key with the values 0xdeadbeef a decade or so ago? -- Pat Farrell http://www.pfarrell.com/ ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] 7.4 upgrade for Ubuntu - Wishful thinking?
aubuti;463003 Wrote: I'm not from Logitech, but I've been running 7.4 on Ubuntu for several months now. In Ubuntu (and probably other *nix OSs) the change in the program name from squeezecenter to squeezeboxserver affects the location of files and the username under which SbS runs. I have no insider info, but I would guess that if transfer of prefs and plugins wasn't included in the 7.4 upgrade (and it wasn't), you're very unlikely to see it in a subsequent upgrade that will probably assume you're on the same squeezeboxserver page as everyone else. So I'd go ahead and update now. To try to avoid some hassles I'd recommend the following: 1. back up your prefs folder (/var/lib/squeezecenter/prefs). You could also backup you plugins folder (/var/lib/squeezecenter/Plugins/) but I wouldn't bother because of the changes in the Extension Downloader (a very nice improvement that many of those whingeing about the upgrade don't seem to have noticed...). Remember to stop SC before making the backup. 2. purge squeezecenter and install squeezeboxserver, as per the Debian install instructions on the wiki page (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Debian_Package) 3. use the new plugins interface to install all your old plugins 4. stop squeezeboxserver, and copy your backed up prefs folder from 7.3.3 (including plugin prefs) over top of the default for 7.4 5. restart SbS. If that doesn't work, then you'll be stuck with re-entering your settings manually. It's a drag, especially if you have a lot of SBs, but you don't have to do it that often. Good luck!! Thanks for the suggested steps. This worked quite well with one minor adjustment. On step 4 be careful to not copy over your Extension Downloader Prefs as that caused some problems for me. Luckily I made a backup of the 7.4 new prefs before replacing them with my 7.3.4 backup so it was easy to correct once I figured out what was happening. It seem like almost all my settings stuck. I lost the Presets on my Boom, but I think that is a different issue. Thanks again. -- mikes mikes's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2427 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68548 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Gus;462989 Wrote: So, after reading of the mayhem caused by upgrading, with the memories of resetting all my prefs + plugins still in (raw) recent memory, I'm wondering: Is sitting out the latest upgrade the answer? At some stage is it likely that transferring the prefs and plugins automated within a later update package? Or am I being unrealistically optimistic? If anyone from Logitech can comment, that'd be great! Do you own a lot of SB3s and do you use Squeezenetwork aka mysqueezebox.com? If so, caution ahead, it will be a hassle to enter your account info manually in the SB3s... I'd go for a clean install, by the way, I have to be convinced the preferences are 100% compatible, I saw some weird stuff at first, and deleted it all again. My 7.4 impressions after a week: - I like the Controller UI design, but think some of the navigation very unintuitive. (i.e. getting to mysqueezebox.com navigates very clumsily on the Controller, and different from every other device.) - The SB3 was left out of compatibility testing with the new squeezenetwork as far as the upgrade goes, painful. - Weird stuff happened to that temperamental combo called the Duet: the SBC was convinced the SBR was happy and paying music when in fact it had gone into a coma only a factory reset got it out of. That sums it up. -- pablolie ...pablo Server: Shuttle X27 - Ubuntu 9.04 - SBS 7.4 Sources: SB3 (3), SB Boom (3), Duet, Accuphase DP65v CD Amplifier: Accuphase E306v Loudspeakers: Ceeroy 3-way tower (tuned) Headphones: Grado SR-1 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68548 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
