Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: piCorePlayer 8.0.0
I successfully did in situ updates on a few piCore players, but one player fails to play after updating. This is a Pi A+ that I use with analog output in an old transistor radio to make a portable player. The player connects to the wifi network, Squeezeplayer is running, and "Headphones" is the selected output device. I tried different output settings, but that made no difference. If I hit play, there is no audio output and the playback indicator doesn't move from zero, i.e. playback doesn't commence. I also tried a clean install of pCP8, and that shows the same behavior. If I reinstall pCP7, everything works. All my other players use a HAT of one type or another, and these all work, which leads me to suspect that using analog output might be my problem. Yes, it was a bit trial and error with the card number at first. If you have a DAC attached, like TimG, it seems easier to turn off the onboard audio, and then you can just select Card 0. It might be more complicated if you want to use USB or HDMI output. Yes, more difficult if you want an equalizer, and totally beyond me. But, I'm fairly confident that what I wrote will work for TimG. We have similar setups, the only difference is that he is using the Hifiberry Miniamp, and I use the Pimoroni pHATDAC. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: piCorePlayer 3.5.0
I did an insitu update from 3.22 to 3.5.0 audiocore. Everything appeared to go OK, audio output was set automatically to Hifiberry DAC+ (and Pro, AMP2) and squeezelite was running. If I attempt to play a file, the web UI shows the file to be playing, but there is no sound. Rebooting and powering down and back on don't help. If I revert to 3.22, everything is fine. I note the initial post mentioned that audiocore is limited to ArmV7, but I believe that should be fine with the Pi 2B. A possible workaround would be to connect a nano router such as the TP-Link TL-WR802N in client mode to the Pi, so that the Pi would be operating from a wired LAN connection. The automatic time zone selection is correct, so it seems that communication with the ntp pool is the problem. I could not see on the 'Tweaks' page where to specify a time server, so I did a little digging under the hood. I edited /etc/sysconfig/ntpserver to force the south-america pool and added this file to /opt/.filetool.lst to make the change persistent. So far after several test reboots the time has been set correctly. Thanks again. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce piCorePlayer 3.20
I have two piCorePlayers (Pi Zero/phatDAC and Pi A+/IQAudio DAC +, both wireless) neither of which consistently sets the correct time on boot and then defaults to December 1969. This doesn't seem to affect the performance of the Zero, but the A+ has the official Raspberry Pi touchscreen and failure to set the correct time interferes with screensaver operation - 1) the 'stopped' screensaver (Word Clock) never starts, 2) the 'now playing' screen is not automatically selected when play begins, but can be selected manually. Is there any way to improve the reliability of setting the time? I am having a problem with vanilla version of 3.20. System is a Pi 2B/IQAudio DAC+ and I am currently running a wired connection. PCP appears to load correctly and I can access the web GUI without any problem. I have selected the correct output, Squeezelite is running and I can play music. The problem is with the display (official Raspberry Pi touch screen). The last output I get is: Starting Jivelite .. Done. crond syncing time crond [631] time disparity of xxx minutes detected The display hangs at this point. The time zone is set to ECT5. This is correct for my location, Ecuador, and the bar at the bottom of the web GUI is showing the correct date and time. We did this on purpose to solve a problem that occurs often with USB-powered gadgets: they draw so much current than the resistance of the cable causes a voltage drop, so instead of 5V, the device sees 4.75V or so. To avoid this problem, we made the adapter 5.25V. This is because the USB power specification allows up to 5.25V, and its safe for all 5V electronics, and has the benefit of making up for any loss due to thin USB cables. Basically, you can use it where ever USB 5V power is needed, with no risk of damage, and it will happily work at the full current range, no matter what cable you use! If you are currently using a thin (i.e. high resistance) USB cable, you might get better performance with a thicker cable without having to change the power supply.
