Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] ANNOUNCE: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
I have a setup with LMS running on a RPi 3, and several pCP players installed on RPi 1 and 2 models. It works very well and has for years now. However, after upgrading my players to pCP 4.0.0, my systems stopped autostarting my favourite radio stations on reboot. For stability, I have set my players to reboot every night at 3:00 am, and only 1 day out of approximately 5 they end up playing the right radio channel when I wake up. Instead they play another radio station. Of course it is easy to change it back using the web interface, but it would be nice if it worked as it used to. I have already checked all the possible reasons I could think of such as misspelling the name of the favourite radio station in the web interface etc. Any hints on how to remedy this small problem? And my apologies if this question was already asked. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: Squeezelite - a small headless squeezeplay emulator for linux (alsa only)
Forgive me for asking a question that may have already been answered in this rather long thread, I have searched for the solution without success. I am using Ubuntu LTS versions (14.04, 16.04 and 18.04) on various computers and I have good experiences using squeezelite for playing music locally on these computers. However, the squeezelite version that comes with the LTS versions seems to be rather old. So can anyone point me at directions on how to fetch and install the latest version on my computers, including a nice and tidy startup script? Does anyone maintain a PPA for this, or do I have to download and compile from source? Any directions would be much appreciated. This time yet again with a freshly flashed pCP4.0.0-b6 image. I get the following text in the window under Save: [ INFO ] Loading wifi firmware extensions... [ OK ] Atheros firmware loaded. Furthermore, it shows the correct wifi MAC address. I then unplug the wired internet and reboot the device. Upon reboot, the USB wifi adapter starts blinking showly (approx 1 Hz), but it gets no connection. This is exactly the same behaviour as the now almost hundred times I have done this exercise. I have now plugged wired internet cable in again, and it immediately gets an IP number. In wifi diagnostics it now says under dmesg: [3.024688] usb 1-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=0bda, idProduct=8179 [3.024709] usb 1-1.2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 [3.024720] usb 1-1.2: Product: 802.11n NIC [3.024729] usb 1-1.2: Manufacturer: Realtek [5.870078] zram: Added device: zram0 . I have not uploaded the wifi diagnostics to pastebin with paste name: pCP-B+-775bd5-wifi Finally, I will repeat that I am using an old RPi 1B+ with a Hifiberry DAC+ card and the problematic USB wifi adapter, and that this configuration has worked for the last few years with different versions of pCP without any problems, the latest tested version being 3.5.0. Hope this helps identify the problem, and thanks again for your help. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
Hi Paul and Greg, Thank you for being so helpful and not giving up on this issue. As for Greg's troubleshooting link and the most frequent reasons for wifi not working: 1.Wrong password. 2.Wrong SSID. 3.piCorePlayer does not support hidden SSID. 4.piCorePlayer does not support special characters in SSID or password. 5.Wifi adapter does not support wifi channel selected on wifi router. 6.USB wifi adapter and buit-in wifi adapter both trying to run at the same time. 7.Some audio cards interfere with Raspberry Pi built-in wifi adapters. 8.Wifi drivers are gradually changing from wext to nl80211 standard. 9.Occasionally, kernel upgrades break USB wifi drivers. Unfortunately, we can not test all USB wifi drivers prior to each piCorePlayer release. Please report any issue. I have of course checked 1+2+3 many times before reporting. Regarding 4, I do have an exclamation point (!) in my password, but I have had that for years without any issue, so I have not considered it a special character 5 can be ruled out as all previous versions of piCorePlayer work with that exact configuration 6 is also not an issue as it is an old RPi 1B+ without built-in wifi 7 the audio card is a Hifiberry DAC+ which has also been part of the configuration for years, so I find this very unlikely so, I think we are back at 8 or 9 as plausible reasons. Paul has sent me a PM, and I will check up on his questions tonight when I'm home and report back to him. I could easily go back to a previous image as I do not immediately need any of the new features in 4.0.0, but I guess my contribution to the development is to offer my rtrequipment for testing and reporting back issues that might affect others. The USB wifi adapter is a relatively cheap one using a Realtek chipset, and I have the impression that these adapters have sold in huge numbers, so I think the issue is relevant not to invest in troubleshooting. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
I already tested the 3.5.0 image for the last few months, and it worked perfectly. It was only after trying to upgrade to 4.0.0 that my wifi connection failed. It has also worked for all the previous versions for a few years now. I bought the RPi in December 2014, and I think the 1.18 version was current at that time. It has worked with piCorePlayer ever since, the 4.0.0 is the first release that breaks the wifi. I even tried to do a ssh connection to the RPi and tried to use the setup program as shown on the link provided, but that did not help either. I decided to abandon the upgraded 4.0.0.b5 card and flashed a freshly downloaded 4.0.0.b6 image to a new SD card, but it was exactly the same story, no joy. Swapping the SD card back to the old 3.02 image, everything works as a charm again. I also have the notion that since it can scan the network and find info on my wifi, and since it reads the MAC address of the USB wifi adapter, it is a very small step that is missing. Any pointer would be greatly appreciated. I can also send diagnostics to pastebin again if you are interested. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
I updated my Raspberry Pi 1B+ from 3.5.0 to 4.0.0.b5 using the WiFi connection, and everything during upgrade seemed to work well. However after reboot, it could not connect to WiFi. I have now taken it down and connected to wired ethernet, and everything works, so the upgrade has completed as expected. I have tried to reconfigure WiFi, but it does not help. When I unplug the network cable and reboot the RPi, it does still not get online. It uses an USB WiFi adapter based on a Realtek chipset and it reports itself as idVendor=0bda, idProduct=8179. The list of loaded modules under WiFi diagnostics says that r8188eu is loaded. This adapter has worked seamlessly in many previous versions of piCorePlayer. Do I need to downgrade to 3.5.0, or is there a way I can get it working with WiFi?? Unfortunately, wired internet is not an option in its normal location. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce piCorePlayer 3.20
I have finally taken the full step and moved all my music (approx. 3 songs in FLAC format, formerly stored on a very old, outdated and insecure NAS server) to a separately powered 2Tb USB HDD which is now attached to an RPi3 running pCP 3.22 with LMS. It works great, the LMS updated the database in 30 minutes, and I have experienced no problems during the first week of operation. However, I am worried about mechanical wear to the HDD because it is not spinning down when I am listening to radio (which I do most of the time). Does anyone have experiences installing a program or an extension on the pCP that will spin down the USB HDD when idle for say x minutes? And are there generic programs for that at all? I am using piCorePlayer on an RPi3 with LMS installed and my music on a FAT32-formatted USB drive. It works very well. LMS scans and recognizes my music OK. However, my playlists are only partly imported. More specifically, file names/paths with Danish special characters (æ, ø, å) do not get recognized, or more precisely they get ignored when LMS scans the playlists. I guess the reason is that file system encoding is different from the encoding of the text in the playlists. But I do not know how to tell LMS about the encoding of files and folders in the file system. Any hints on how to do that? I have tried to change the encoding of the playlist files between ANSI and UTF8, but that does not seem to help. Thanks to the team for excellent and interesting developments over the past weeks. I was perhaps a bit too eager to upgrade, because insitu upgrade failed and made my RPi1B+ unable to boot. Burned the image to the MicroSD card again, and now it works. Don't know if there were problems downloading the .tar.gz file, perhaps resulting in a corrupted file - the download took forever. Just wanted to report this in case other experience similar problems. Thanks again for your great work. Will try to do a fresh install on my RPi3 shortly. Dear Man in a van / Ronnie and AngloCuencano, Thank you very much for your suggestions. Actually, I already had tried reformatting and re-imaging the MicroSD card several times and with several versions, all giving the same result, but thank you anyway. It was the suggestion by AngloCuencano that did the trick. I was unaware of that option - "Proxied Streaming" in LMS - but in retrospect and with the symptoms that I had, it clearly makes sense. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: piCorePlayer 2.00
I have installed piCorePlayer 2.02 on an RPi1b+ and have problems when listening to web radio. The LMS is on a separate RPi3 running max2play, with music stored locally, and connected to my router via cable. The client RPi1b+ is connected via a TP-Link TL-WN725N V2 USB WiFi dongle as I have no cabling options in the room where it is located. When streaming music (FLAC, MP3) from the LMS server, there is no problem at all, everything reacts swiftly and no dropouts etc. However, when I try to listen to web radio, it doesn't work. I get 5-10 seconds of radio, then approximately 1 minute of silence, folllowed by another 10 seconds radio sound etc. I am wondering why I get this problem, because before I installed pCP 2.02, I used to run Volumio on the exact same hardware without any problems at all when streaming radio. I have tried to modify buffer settings in pCP, but that does not seem to make any difference. However, I am not sure I know how to optimize buffer sizes, so it has mostly been trial-and-error-based so far. I could of course install Volumio again, but I like pCP better. I think the problem must be related to the connection or the buffers, because i can stream radio from the same server to a Squeezebox Duet in another room without any problems. On the other hand, it does not seem to make sense to me as I think much more data would be need to be transferred when playing FLAC than when streaming radio. Any suggestions for how to proceed with the troubleshooting would be appreciated. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: piCorePlayer 2.00
Never mind, I guess I will try to be patient then. Meanwhile, I set up the beta version of max2play with LMS on the new RPi 3, and it seems to work very well with all my players and my music library on a USB HDD. However, the idea of a very lightweight distribution running everything in RAM and not risking to corrupt the SDCard in case of power failure still appeals to me, and I have very good experience with piCorePlayer so far, so when a candidate release of piCorePlayer is ready for RPi 3, I am still willing to test. Congratulations and a big thank you to everyone contributing to this latest and greatest version! ;) One question: I want to use it as a stand-alone net radio player in the future, therefore I wanted to install and enable LMS on it, so it will autostart my favourite radio station when powered on. According to the About page, it should be possible. I have enabled "Auto start LMS" under Tweaks in the menu and rebooted several times, but LMS does not seem to be running on the RPi. Instead, it finds LMS working off my Windows machine. It does not help to stop LMS on Windows, the RPi still does not find LMS running locally. I assume there are additional steps I must take to actually install LMS on the RPi. I have looked in the forums, but apparently not hard enough because I have not yet found out how to see if LMS is installed, and if not, how to install it. Any pointers would be welcome. I have problems with my cheap USB network adapter TP-Link TL-WN725N V2 in the 1.15-versions of piCorePlayer, including the latest version 1.15e. I asked in the piCore forum but was redirected here. The support for this WiFi dongle has broken more than once when the kernel has been upgradet. I have previously been able to install the missing drivers using help from the internet, but I am unable to get anything to work with the most recent version. Is there a general recipe for getting it to work again, or are there plans for a new version that solves this problem. It is my general impression that support for the TP-Link TL-WN725N V2 is a bit tricky on several distros for the RPi, but it also seems to be a very popular dongle due to its low price, so it would be nice to either get it to work or get a general recipe for making it work. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite
I am a very happy user of piCorePlayer for a few months now - it is nice to notice the progress, and I am in the process of ordering a HifiBerry DAC to test. Thank you for all the effort. One question, perhaps a bit off-topic, but I hope you can forgive me. I know that Logitech Media Server and Squeezelite player can co-exist on a Raspberry Pi like in the SqueezePlug distro for the Pi. I have several other computers with Logitech Media Server running, but sometimes it would be just great with a light weight alternative to bring e.g. to a party with friends and relatives. My question is therefore if it is possible to run Logitech Media Server either on a separate Raspberry Pi or co-existing with piCorePlayer and make it unpluggable like the piCorePlayer? I mean, you just plug in the power supply, the distro loads itself into RAM and LMS performs a scan of the media on any USB sticks or USB hard drives present? It would require that the database(s) could fit into the RAM of the Pi, but that would not be a problem for a party mix, I guess. I have tried to find out if others had addressed this problem, and I see that others have worked with Raspbian as a basis. I have tried the Volumio beta version for Pi, but I do not find it ideal, e.g. I have to add my local radio stations manually, it does not presently support my USB WiFi dongle, etc. I very much like the idea of a tiny core and a distro that does not add wear to the SD card. I would be courious (and willing to contribute by testing etc.) if somebody was tempted at trying this idea either as a separate project or as something that could co-exist with piCorePlayer on the same SD card. And please point me to start another thread if this is too much off-topic.
