[SlimDevices: Unix] Squeezelite and HDMI output on Raspberry Pi OS (Pi 3B, 3B+)
A recent software upgrade to Raspberry Pi OS broke the way Squeezelite had previously played to the Pi's HDMI output. I've seen some mention of this issue in the piCorePlayer threads, so I gather HDMI is very much a moving target right now. This is one of those times when, after about fourteen years of using Linux as my main OS, I feel like a total newbie. I will provide much, much more detail below, but first I'd like to say that I'm hoping for some guidance at the most basic level: should I just stick with a version that works, for now, or is it worthwhile to try to find the problem and fix it? If the latter, I will need a lot of guidance. Early this month, I started working on a project that would turn a Pi into a self-contained media center that could be plugged into a TV's HDMI input to play video and music. Since video was part of the plan, piCorePlayer was not an option, and I decided to use Raspberry Pi OS (formerly Raspbian). I used the regular version (includes a gui desktop, but minimal pre-installed software) of the most recent release, dated January 11, 2021. I started off with a Pi 3B, but soon switched to a 3B+. The situation I describe here applies to both. When first installing the OS, the setup procedure prompts to update software. I did that, and proceeded to install other software I wanted, including LMS 8.1.1 and Squeezelite v1.9.8-1344. Everything worked. When LMS served audio to squeezelite, I could hear it through TV audio system (A/V receiver and speakers). Playing video with VLC, audio and video both worked. This remained true until last Saturday, when I ran another software update, using apt-get dist-upgrade. Following that update, LMS could no longer play music through Squeezelite. VLC was still able to play video and audio through the HDMI output. I have since repeated the process with a fresh install of the same OS image. This time, I skipped the initial software upgrade, but installed my choices. Again, LMS and Squeezelite worked, until I ran a manual upgrade, this time using the recommended command, apt full-upgrade. Again, Squeezelite was no longer able to output to HDMI. I have also made a fresh install and allowed the initial software upgrade. This time, the LMS/Squeezelite combo never worked, but VLC is still to play audio through HDMI. I have checked the level the Squeezelite player is set to and turned it up. I have checked the Alsamixer level. I have tried using the Pi installation of LMS to serve music to a Boom, and it worked. I have tried bypassing the TV HDMI input and connecting directly to an HDMI input in the A/V receiver, without success. The current Squeezelite startup command is: Code: /home/pi/bin/squeezelite -s localhost -n MusicHall -z -o hw:CARD=b1,DEV=0 I have also tried these outputs: plughw:CARD=b1,DEV=0 sysdefault:CARD=b1 All worked before the upgrade. I can't get any audio out of squeezelite with them now. I'm stuck. I suppose the logical thing is to try some other options with Squeezelite, but which options? I haven't a clue about how to proceed. Are there logging options I should use in LMS and/or in Squeezelite that might shed some light on the situation? Or would it make more sense simply to assume that this is not going to work for now? I can always start again with a fresh install and never run a software upgrade. It just irks me to have to do that. It's admitting defeat. But, as we've seen recently, sometimes that's the intelligent choice. I think I recall that you claimed in some recent post to have a short attention span. I wonder if we could play a round of attention span golf, just to see who's score is lower! Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that I think I read through it, but I've been known to miss crucial details in that process. In any case, I was stuck about 5% of the way through the page, where he says, "Now to start Squeezelite I had to run (ip address is the address of the LMS server): sudo /usr/bin/squeezelite-armv6hf -o front:CARD=Set,DEV=0 -s 192.168.2.4 And it worked!" I couldn't get to the point where I could say it worked, so I didn't see a way to proceed with the rest. Now that I can, I'm interested. I've always used the -z parameter, because that way I can stop and start squeezelite over ssh. Having it run as a service achieves the same thing. I'm just curious about the reasons for avoiding -z. I've always run it that way. That's a bit like saying, "I've always enjoyed my last cigarette of the day after I go to bed, and I don't see any reason to stop now." In other words, I'm not doubting that there are reasons for not wanting to daemonize squeezelite, I'd just like to know what they are. It might be possible to make it work, but I think a lot of advanced tinkering would be required. I'm very happy with LMS running on a Raspberry Pi. But the thin client path sounds interesting, too. This may not matter to you if your collection is not large or if you don't need to do a full rescan very often. My impression is that a 3B is perfectly adequate for a player (without LMS installed on the same machine). I have a 3B running piCorePlayer as a player only, with no problems. Although you did not ask for advice on this issue, if you haven't already done so, ssh into the Pi and check the levels in alsamixer. There are steps you can take to save the alsamixer settings so that they survive a reboot, but I am not familiar with the version of pCP you are using, so I'm not going to attempt to direct you there. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] LMS / Squeezelite on an Android TV box or phone
My only experience is that I looked into it and decided that if it is possible it is far beyond my capability. Termux is an "Android terminal emulator and Linux environment app" (that's a quote from termux.com) and is available from the Play Store and F-droid. Somewhere on one of the pages linked from that site, I once found an old forum post in which someone asked if squeezelite could be compiled for Termux. There was no response. It would be great if someone could find a way to make this combination work. Good luck to anyone who feels capable of taking it on. LMS 8 nightly running on Raspberry Pi OS. In the past, I have experimented with several methods of installing a full Linux distro on an Android phone, but not recently. Things may have improved, although my impression is that each generation of Android makes it more difficult to do anything useful in a chroot. My experience was that it was cool to have Debian or Ubuntu running on the phone, but had little practical value, especially on an unrooted phone. However, if it is possible, as you suggest, to get LMS running in a "headless" chroot and let Android apps take care of player and control functions, that would have great value. I hope someone can work on that. It is beyond my skill level. LMS 8 nightly running on Raspberry Pi OS. Mostly virtual players, occasionally with SB Radio, Boom or Classic. You have several players playing the same thing and all of them can be controlled at the same time from any of the synchronized players. Is that correct? This can be done with drag-and-drop in Material skin, as in your screenshot. I do not know of a way to save a configuration made this way, but perhaps someone who knows more will correct me. If you have a group of synchronized players you want to use frequently, the best way I know of to do that, without having to create the group every time, is to install the Group Players plugin, which should be available in the 3rd Party Plugins section on the Plugins page under settings. I usually prefer to manage plugins in the default skin, but I think it can be done in Material, too. The Group Players plugin will make it possible for you to create one or more Group Players, which will then appear in the drop-down list of players. Each Group Player will be two or more individual players synchronized together. LMS 8 nightly running on Raspberry Pi OS. Mostly virtual players, occasionally with SB Radio, Boom or Classic. Just to elaborate a bit, in order to do what you want to do, all players need to be connected to the same server. That is, the same instance of LMS. Having LMS running on all your installations of piCorePlayer is just confusing matters. Here's a view of my Players drop-down list in Material (in my case on a desktop instead of the mobile version): 36132 There are eight standard players and two group players. LMS is running on the Raspberry Pi named Baskerville at the top of the list, and nowhere else. It stays on all the time. I can use any one of the eight standard players independently of the others. Each one could be playing something different. Or I could select the group player, All-player-sync, and have the same thing playing on all of them (assuming they are all powered on). Isn't that what you want? There's one remaining thing you want, and I am utterly clueless about it: making this work from your automation dashboard. Can you select a player from the dashboard? If so, it should be possible to set up your dashboard so you can choose to use an individual player or a group player. But if not, you will probably have to continue to use LMS (through the Material skin on you phone, as in your screenshot) to choose an individual player or a group. +---+ |Filename: lms-material-players.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=36132| +---+ LMS 8 nightly running on Raspberry Pi OS. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Android Squeezelite
Many thanks for posting this! This is very good news for anyone who has wanted to use an Android device as a player, without having access to the Google Play Store. I'll stick with SB Player on my phone, but I also have a few Android tablets and old phones that don't have access to the Play Store, and this is just what they have needed. The catch is that Termux only supports Android 7 and above, so some old devices will miss out. I just tried this on my current phone, and it works. Now, a few quibbles. The Termux readme at https://github.com/termux/termux-app#installation says, > Termux and its plugins are no longer updated on Google Play Store due to > android 10 issues and have been deprecated. The last version released > for Android >= 7 was v0.101. It is highly recommended to not install > Termux apps from Play Store any more. Current options are to install from F-Droid of Github, and directions are given at the URL posted above. Additionally, there was a change in Termux package management in May of 2021. Existing installations of Termux that have not already updated to the new package management mirrors since then will need to be updated before they can install Squeezelite. Details are at https://github.com/termux/termux-packages/wiki/Package-Management . Also, Termux uses pkg commands instead of apt and apt-get. If the apt commands don't work for you, try pkg update, followed by pkg install squeezelite. That's what worked for me. One more thing: I like Hacker's Keyboard, but I usually prefer AnySoft keyboard with the SSH language pack. It also provides access to all ctrl and alt key combinations. However, Termux provides access to most of the extra keys you need, so it may not be necessary to switch away from your preferred keyboard. Enough quibbles! The important thing is that squeezelite is now available for many Android devices. LMS 8 nightly running on Raspberry Pi OS. Mostly virtual players, occasionally with SB Radio, Boom or Classic. Yes, I think bcm2835 is the built-in headphone jack. I don't know anything about the relative output levels of an Apple dongle and a Chromecast audio, so it may be that what you're getting now is the maximum. This is something of a long shot, but what other output settings are available for the Apple dongle? Near the top of the pCP Squeezelite Settings page, on the Output Setting line, where you currently have "hw:CARD=A,DEV=0" selected, click on the red "more>" to the right. The terminal does not actually freeze, it is busy executing squeezelite. Add the -d option to your command. To use your example: Code: squeezelite -o sysdefault:CARD=DragonFly -d That will "daemonize" squeezelite, so that it runs in the background and continues to run after you close the terminal window. However, squeezelite does not save that setting, you will have to use the same command every time you start squeezelite. Your list of outputs shows includes spaces in the names. Is that correct? I will correct my previous post to reflect it. So much for working from obviously faulty memory, instead of actually looking things up. I am very aware that most intelligent people prefer to run squeezelite as a service, so using the -z (not -d!) option is to be avoided, as well as pointless. I still start it separately, daemonized. SqueezePlay, which I recommended (but without proper capitalization) is, as you said, a desktop player application. I THINK (but am not certain, so I hope more knowledgeable users will either correct or confirm what I say here) that SqueezePlay thoroughly emulates the interface of some Squeezebox players, including the ability to switch it to control a different Squeezebox player on the same network. In other words, if I am right about this, it is a player, but you do not have to use it as a player. You may use it as a standalone controller. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] LInux client (controller) currently maintained
SqueezePlay running on Linux Mint 20.3 (sorry, I haven't upgraded to 21 yet): 38917 Although it COULD be playing music on the computer on which it is running, at present it is simply controlling a player in a different room. Installing it is straightforward, following the directions on the download page mentioned previously (https://sourceforge.net/projects/lmsclients/files/squeezeplay/linux). As you mentioned, the Readme file is three years old, but the most recent builds date from last year. The first two lines of the directions only matter if you have previously installed SqueezePlay form a .deb file. Clearly, that is not the case, so you can safely skip those two lines. Code: Uninstall the debian package. sudo apt-get purge squeezeplay Create /opt/squeezeplay if it doesn't exist. sudo mkdir -p /opt/squeezeplay extract the tar file sudo tar -C /opt/squeezeplay -xzf squeezeplay-pulse-7.8.0-1149-x86_64.tgz Before upgrading from tar files remove the old /opt/squeezeplay folder before extracting the new one, otherwise you could have multiple versions of some files installed. Start using the script /opt/squeezeplay/bin/squeezeplay.sh If you want your screensaver to start, uncomment export SDL_VIDEO_ALLOW_SCREENSAVER=1 in the script. That will install SqueezePlay, but you may find, as I did, that it locks up while trying to connect to mysqueezebox.com, with no obvious way to break out. I found these instructions in the Readme file for the Windows version of jivelite, which solved the problem for me. Code: Troubleshooting If you're computer has multiple active network interfaces, for example wireless and vpn connections, and after you've completed the initial setup, jivelite returns from Scanning for Players without finding one, try this. After Scanning for Players fails, click and hold the left arrow button to the left of Choose Player, near the top. Click Settings->Advanced->Networking->Remote Libraries->Add New Library. Enter the IP address of your LMS server and click Done->Connect to this library. At this point if you can't connect to the library Quit jivelite and restart it. Jivelite should connect to your library right away. Once you've done that, you will need to go back to the first level of Settings and selection the "Choose Player" option, which will allow you to control any Squeezebox player on your network from your computer. I think this is exactly what you asked for in your first post, brainchild. Perhaps it will help or inspire > someone. There have already been some misunderstandings in this thread, and I think we now have another one. I cannot speak for others who have posted suggestions, but when I posted the directions for manually installing SqueezePlay, I was under the mistaken impression that you wanted to have a non-browser-based desktop client that could control players attached to LMS, and that you might be willing to follow some simple instructions to achieve that. I suspect that was the thinking behind other posts, too: the point wasn't that *someone* might attempt to follow the directions, but that *YOU* could. I think it is clear now that what you want is a .deb package to install such a client, and nothing else. That remains a possibility, although an unlikely one. My understanding is that developers in this community usually work on projects that interest them. So far, you are the only one who has expressed a need for a .deb package for this purpose. You might consider offering a bounty for a developer who would be willing to tackle the task. That might generate some interest, if someone with the necessary skills has some spare time. brainchild wrote: > Perhaps my enthusiasm about expressing a solution I considered as an > ideal, and one which I think others might also share in principle, > whether or not having considered it, appeared as a demand or rejection. Thank you. That may have contributed to our misunderstanding, but by then I had already failed to understand what you were trying to achieve, and I had filled in the blanks in my understanding with my own assumptions. Sometimes it is necessary to make inferences, because some people do not have a background that has prepared them to make the necessary observations or the vocabulary needed to report them. I have been in that role, and probably will be again, and resolving my issues depended on finding someone who was able to "read between the lines" and infer what I needed to say but was incapable of saying. But that approach made for a misguided and unhelpful response to you. What was needed was simply to read what you wrote and refrain from inferring anything. This exchange has been a good reminder that that should always be an option. I did think I was trying to be neutral and non-judgmental in my replies to you, but I see now that I did not try hard enough. Anyone whose inference engine is running will notice unstated implications in my words. So I would like to state openly and for the record that it is a perfectly valid option to prefer properly packaged software to manual installations. Fortunately, I am not one of the most knowledgeable people here, so some people who actually know their way around are providing what you need. I don't think I was exactly wrong when I told you that what you wanted (if I understood it by then) was unlikely. But Craig (cpd730) has shown again why he is one of the heroes of this community, and if I have finally arrived at an understanding of your needs, I think it is very likely that you will be happy with the results. Isn't this usually a setting in the external drive's firmware, rather than on the computer? Searching for the opposite of what you want, I found this page, mostly more than ten years old, but with one suggestion from last year: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/5211/prevent-a-usb-external-hard-drive-from-sleeping What I think I understand from that is that hdparm might make it possible for you to change the drive's settings. hdparm is available in piCorePlayer extensions. Another suggestion in that thread was to attach the drive to a Windows computer and change the settings there. I should probably mention that I also found articles that suggested that drives may be designed to spin constantly, in which case spinning down when not in use may actually shorten the drive's lifespan. My own experience when using a usb hdd for the LMS library was that the drive would spin down after about five minutes of inactivity. It would then take about a minute to spin up again, causing problems if LMS had buffered a long track. I had to prevent spin down while LMS was playing.
