Library scanned in. Just had to edit playlists to suit new paths. All my players are recognised. Sound quality is great. It's much lighter and simpler than vortexbox. The only downside I can see is it's "just" a music server, were vortexbox could handle video et al. But it seems to do it much better at first look. I'll play with it over the weekend before deciding to ditch the old vortexbox but it's looking promising. Thanks for the link. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] network/server name problem
OK thanks epoch, so I have successfully pinged several of my devices by name both from windows and Linux (Although a couple of pings from windows failed "could not find host" I think that is individual device set ups). Ping to the NAS using the current server name of diskstation works from both windows and linux. I'll have a dig and see if I can find a dhclient.conf file. In answer to your previous post I don't currently have a domain name set up. Most of the reading I have done suggest this is optional and I haven't needed one to date using samba. Do I need to set one up now to use NFS? I'm guessing not because it is working at the moment albeit I can't change the server name. [SlimDevices: Unix] network/server name problem
This isn't directly related to my Logitech Media Sever directly but it does effect the LMS so I am hoping some of the great efforts on here may be able to help. I have recently set up a Synology DS216j on my network to hold my media and for backup purposes. It works but... Out of the box it comes with a server name of "diskstation". On setup I changed this to "NAS1" I have smb set up which works. I have also set up NFS which works but i noticed when trying to mount the share on my vortexbox that i had to use the IP address and not the server name of NAS1. I then noticed that the DMS web admin page on Linux can't see the server NAS1:5000 but it can see diskstation:5000. Oddly on Windows NAS1:5000 works and diskstation:5000 doesn't. I have checked the contents of /etc/hostname on the Nas and, as expected, it contains NAS1. I am confused as to why my Linux machine can't see NAS1 on the network but my windows machines can see it. More oddly I'm confused as to why my Linux machine can still see the diskstation name at all. Anyone any ideas please? Any help greatly appreciated. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: piCorePlayer 3.10
The wired one is synced to both the touch and the SB player on my vortexbox. I wired it in the hope of proving it was WiFi causing the issue but can't prove that for sure. The WiFi one is not synced to anything, it's in the bedroom and I'm trying to use it as an alarm clock but can't rely on it. I also can't replicate the problem, in as much as I can't "make" it happen. I have just noticed that my internet connection was reset in the night. That shouldn't have any effect on my LAN as I have seperate modem and router. Maybe a red herring but just to add to the confusion . It also happens both streaming local music and radio from the internet. Help needed to diagnose problem please. I have 2 Pi3's running PiCorePlayer with official 7" touch screen and IQAudio DigiAmp+. I also have an original SB Touch and a Squeeze player running on my vortexbox which is my LMS. Both Picoreplayers work fine mist of the time but every one on a while when starting a stream they will go through the motions of connecting to the server, buffering etc. And look like they have started to play but there is no audio out. Only a reboot or two will get audio back. I have one on built in WiFi and one cabled and both exhibit this behaviour. It gives the appearance that the mute relay on the DigiAmp+ isn't getting in muted. To this end I have tried both settings in the Advanced options for the audio card in Beta settings but it still happens. I now want to start logging to see what exactly is happening but would like to know what logging level I need to set in order to get the info I require please? I can't seem to resolve the error message I'm getting in the title. This is the second occurrence but last time a couple of reboots seemed to clear it. I have searched and found that it can be the format of the config.cfg file not being Linux compatible. I can't see how because it has been working fine but I am trying to edit/re-save it to be sure. The problem is I can't find it. So here's the dim question. How/where do I find it? I have tried SSH into the picoreplayer and taken the SD Card out and tried to find it on both a Linux and windows machine all with no luck. I'm no Linux expert but not exactly a newbie either (at least I thought I wasn't :). I can see the content of config.cfg in the web interface diagnostics page and it all looks fine to me. I have connected one to the LAN but the other one wouldn't connect to the library this morning and on reboot came up with the same error. I have searched this and the only thing I can find is that this can occur if the file is DOS format instead of Linux. However, mine works most of the time so don't think it can be that. Does anyone have any idea what wise can cause this? On bit it seems to be picking up the right information and there are no survival characters in the SSID etc. On what I think is a seperate matter; I have also had a few instances where when I start the player playing again after switching it off from the software button, it goes through the motions, IE. It connects to the stream and the play time counts up as if it's paying but there is no audio. This happens when I stop and start a radio stream, which is what they asked a lot of time doing. It only seems to happen on WiFi as far as I can tell ( I have put one on the LAN and it hasn't occurred yet on it but I can't be sure as it only happens once in a while. I haven't been running any logging but can do so if it will help diagnose what's going on. Any pointers greatly appreciated. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: piCorePlayer 3.10
I have just had an interesting event that I thought I would share. I have 2 Pi3's with official 7" screen and IQAudio DigiAmp+ connecting WiFi to my vortexbox LMS. I also have a real SB Touch and a player configured on the vortexbox itself. This morning neither of the picoreplayers would play. The others worked a normal. On re boot they both failed to connect to the WiFi reporting "Set ESSID too few arguments". I connected one via ethernet to see what was happening and all the set up parameters were ok. I switched WiFi off and back on and on a second reboot it connected to the WiFi. I didn't connect the second player to Ethernet, just rebooted and it also connected to WiFi. So, I didn't change anything but they seemed to just come back to life. Not sure what caused it. Don't think we had any power glitches overnight. All seems to be back to normal now but I'll monitor to see if it happens again. Have to say I agree with Mnyb, getting your tags sorted out is the way to go. It may be a pain to get it right but once done you won't regret it. There are lots of forum posts in the subject of tagging. Personally I use mp3tag and do it manually but there are "automatic" tagging apps out there with varying success rates. It's a pain to do initially but once you get it right you just tag any new music that you add. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: piCorePlayer 3.00
Hi guys, not sure if this is the right place to ask this do feel free to put me right. I have built picoreplayer doing a Pi3b, IQAudio DigiAmp+ and an official 7" touch screen. Giving me an excellent additional SB touch. Well impressed with the performance so far and I would like to build one or two more. The only problem I have is that I would like to build it into an enclosure. I have it currently mounted on a pimoroni display case, which leaves everything at the rear exposed. I tried fitting it into the official case for the 7" display but it's too small. I'm considering the possibility of getting an enclosure to fit between the legs of the pimoroni case but not certain that will work out look decent. Otherwise I could get an enclosure to suit and make cutouts to suit. Anyone tried this and got any suggestions? Also I wouldn't mind making one in an enclosure with built in speakers to become the "kitchen radio". Anyone any suggestions for small speakers I can build into an enclosure to suit? Great piece of development work, thanks for all the effort. [SlimDevices: Unix] Vortexbox LMS playlist importing problem
Hi all, I have recently migrated my LMS to a headless pc running vortexbox. I have it all up and working fine except I am having trouble importing playlists from a windows machine running MusicBee. I use musicBee because It is easier to create playlists in and it syncs selected playlists to my mobile device brilliantly. I can export a playlist from MusicBee directly to the \\VORTEXBOX\files\music\playlist directory. It gives me the option to to unix file paths (/) and to remap the file paths. I can also select the playlist type and I select .m3u. However LMS doesn't see the playlists imported this way. Here is an example of a playlist the LMS creates #CURTRACK 0 #EXTM3U #EXTURL:file:///storage/music/flac/Bert%20Weedon/20%20Guitar%20Greats/Wipe%20Out.flac #EXTINF:184,Wipe Out/storage/music/flac/Bert Weedon/20 Guitar Greats/Wipe Out.flac #EXTURL:file:///storage/music/flac/Bert%20Weedon/20%20Guitar%20Greats/Yakety%20Axe.flac #EXTINF:121,Yakety Axe/storage/music/flac/Bert Weedon/20 Guitar Greats/Yakety Axe.flac And here is an example of one exported from MB /storage/music/flac/Alison Moyet/Alf/All Cried Out.mp3 /storage/music/flac/Alison Moyet/Alf/For You Only.mp3 As you can see the exported one is much simpler. So my question is Should the exported one be read ok bt LMS? If not then is it a permissions issue? I have noticed when browsing the share from my windows 7 machine that there seems to bne a difference in the permissions. See attached jpg's. Is this the problem? If so how do I fix it on the headless vortexbox? I don't fancy messing with the permissions through windows file browser without advice as I am a Linux newbie. Any advice appreciated. OK. I'm trying to compile and install squeezeplay from the tarball in the nightly builds section http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.7. I'm no expert so I may be missing something but when I unpacked the tarball I was expecting to find a configure script to run to create a makefile to compile with. No such files exist. The unpacked tarball seems to have created the binaries directly, I get clive@Sony-Vaio ~/Packages/squeezeplay $ ls bin include lib man share squeezeplay-7.7.1-9557.tgz The bin folder already has the files to run squeezeplay, the same as when I installed it through software manager. The additional complications brought on by sub-flavours (for instance I though Mint 11 was an Ubuntu) make it even more confusing. I am sure that to the cognoscenti, and for specific tasks, each flavour has its good points. As a general user I'm still bewildered. When I started on the exercise I did not understand that when people said that a version was subject to rolling updates (as Linux Mint Debian is) that really did mean many things would be incompatible with it. In the Windows world, this type of problem is, in my experience of normal home-use software from Windows 2 onwards, quite rare, even though Windows is updated every month. When I discovered that SBS would not run at all because there were incompatible versions of PERL (which I had previously understood to be a long-lived, stable, and reliable bit of software) I was shocked. Surely newer versions of something as fundamental as this should almost always attempt to support older user software, or at least provide an easy upgrade path? I then read about arguments about new Ubuntu GUIs, and think that all this choice and variety is not for me. I just want to use stuff. I have no idea whether a newer version of SBS may soon fail to run on one or other older recommended flavours of Unix in the near future. So apart from one old laptop mainly used for web browsing I shall not be treading in Linux waters for a long time. I agree that there are loads of flavours of Linux to choose from and there is a steep learning curve when used to windows. But it is well worth the effort, I think. Try Mint 11, http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php, It's as close to windows environment as it gets, is stable, comes with all the drivers you will need initially ready installed. I tried Ubuntu first but didn't get on to well with it. I am much more impressed with Mint. But thats just my opinion. [SlimDevices: Unix] Linux / Ubuntu 11.04 Applications advice
Hi all, Just looking at migrating from win7 to Ubuntu. I have Ubuntu 11.04 on a test machine at the moment and am trying out software to see what suits my needs before taking the plunge. So, I'd like you your expert advice on suitable apps please. I have what, for me, is a pretty clean and seamless system running on my Win 7 machine at the moment but I am rather fed up with windows. Hence the plan to migrate if I can get a similar set up that suits my needs. My main use apart from email, web browsing etc.. are Music management, flac, wma and mp3 files, and playing and a bit of web design, development and maintenance. My current packages and reasons for using them are: Web Design - Dreamweaver CS4 - Really powerful wysisyg, php and ajax. Web Testing - xampp - Local testing of web sites with php and MySql. I know these two are really off topic but I include them in case anyone has a comment to make on them. The rest are relevant to this forum, honest Music Streaming - Squeezebox Server - Need I say more Local Music - MusicBee - Clean and powerful and it syncs playlists to my HTC HD2 converting on the fly CD Ripping to flac - Eazy CD-DA Extractor or EAC - Both do the basic ripping job well. I'm not worried about the tagging at this stage as I use... Tag Editor - Mp3Tag - It's simply brilliant at tagging all my files, making sure all tags are ID3V2.3, cleaning out any others and embedding album art. Album Art Finder - Album Art Downloader - One stop search of all repositories, never fails to find it. If anyone has used these in windows and found an alternative in Linux or has any suggestions for apps that will do the job as well as these I'd love to hear from you. Many thanks. -- cliver SBS Version: 7.5.3 - r31792 SB Touch 7.5.3 - r9283 Squeezeplay 7.5.3 - r0 Win 7 Ultimate (64 Bit) SP1 cliver's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43289 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88912 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

[SlimDevices: Unix] Installing SBS on Ubuntu - new to linux and confused
Hi all, I have been using SBS on win7 for sometime and now want to migrate it to Linux/Ubuntu. I'm very new to Linux/Ubuntu. Just looking to migrate after years on windows. Sorry if I haven't searched deep enough but I'm a bit confused as to how to install SBS on Ubuntu. On the Logitech download page it suggests I can download and run a Ubuntu installer directly. But,on this and other forums it describes some long winded methods. Can someone give me a definitive answer; Is it safe to just run the downloaded file? I did find a slim devices repository but it didn't install properly. Is there a definitive idiots guide to installing on Ubuntu? Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] SBS 7.5.4 on 11.04 (32 bit)
Hi Guys, I have just installed ubuntu as I had a disc crash and it was an ideal time to try it out. I have been using win 7 up to now and getting on fine with SBS. I quite like ubuntu but as a linux newbie it's giving me a few headaches. I have installed SBS Version: 7.5.4 - r32171 downloaded from logitech site and run from gui. As said in previous post it said it was bad and not to install. I installed anyway and it runs ok. At first run it took me through the setup process, asking for location of music files, playlists and prompting for a password for sql. I gave it a password (cause I always do what I'm told ;-). Looking at this thread that may have been a mistake. I opened sbs in a browser, checked settings and did a scan but it didn't find anything. I then read this thread and tried to de install and reinstall sbs in the hope that I could try not giving sql a password. Sadly it bypasses the setup steps on re install and keeps the previous settings?? One thing I have noticed is that if I try to set my music folder in sbs it can't see any of the sub folders in my library. i.e. I have it pointing to /home/clive/music/Home Library normally. Under Home Library there are sub folders for file types/artist/album. I was going to point it at one of the sub folders to see if it made a difference but it can't see the sub folders. Sorry, I'm still using windows terminology :-0. Anyway, can anyone tell me if the problem is just one of permissions because I guess SBS is running a different username than me? If so how do I get round it? Or is it the sql password, in which case how do I completely de install sbs? One other question. How can I see if SBS is running. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] SBS 7.5.4 on 11.04 (32 bit)
Looking at the instructions I followed here... http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/17011/~/installing-squeezebox-server-software-on-linux It looks like I have to give the Squeezebox Server account proper permissions to access my music library and playlists. I can't see an account for sbs though. I'm looking in control center/ Users and Groups but the only account shown is mine. I think this may come back to my question above about seeing the process running somewhere... Is SBS actually running?? How can I tell? Even if it is or isn't running should the install process have created a user? Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] SBS 7.5.4 on 11.04 (32 bit)
Just tried deinstalling through the janitor?? Not sure it made any difference but one thin I noticed.. when I try to start the server in a terminal window I get the following error message clive@Studio-XPS-8100:~$ service squeezeboxserver start Making sure that Squeezebox Server is not running first: start-stop-daemon: warning: failed to kill 7611: Operation not permitted No process in pidfile '/var/run/squeezeboxserver.pid' found running; none killed. Starting Squeezebox Server. start-stop-daemon: unable to open pidfile '/var/run/squeezeboxserver.pid' for writing (Permission denied) clive@Studio-XPS-8100:~$ I'm guessing this is all permissions related? Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] SBS 7.5.4 on 11.04 (32 bit)
Getting somewhere... I have looked at the folder and music file permissions in my library. All the folders seem to have me down for Create and Delete files. The group Clive to Access files and Others to Access Files. However, when I get to the files themselves I have read and write access but groups and others have no access. I changes one file to give the group Clive and Others Read-Only access and it scanned into SBS OK. So it is definitely a permissions issue. My question is.. 1. What permissions do I need to give and to who? 2. How do I do that in bulk? I have in excess of 1200 albums and don't want to do it one file at a time :-( -- cliver SBS Version: 7.5.3 - r31792 SB Touch 7.5.3 - r9283 Squeezeplay 7.5.3 - r0 Win 7 Ultimate (64 Bit) SP1 cliver's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43289 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87719 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] SBS 7.5.4 on 11.04 (32 bit)
Cracked how to do it in bulk. For some reason when looking at a directory properties/permissions when I changed the File Access and tried to Apply Permissions to Enclosed Files it reverted to -- in the GUI before I clicked the apply button. This time it stayed as Read-Only until it had updated the files in the directories below. I have now given every man and his dog Read-Only permission on all the files and it seems to have scanned in OK. I have to say the scan didn't seem to take as long as it did in windows 7, but that may be wishful thinking ;-) Anyway. I have it working but can anyone tell me what permissions I need to set as a minimum and for who?
