make sure volumes are equivalent. Even a tiny difference leads to
listeners preferring the “louder” one.
p.s. if he has an “audiophile” PC, he is already lost in the zone of
audiophoolery.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer LMS installation after power outage

2022-12-26 Thread garym

On the piCorePlayer webGUI main page youll see the option for Sd
card backup. Youll select the destination for the backup. Could
be the NAS or an attached usb drive. The backup will create a IMG file.
Then you can burn this img file to a different SD card in the future if
need be. Bottom line, the backup process is not creating a new SD card,
only the img file.

Edit. Dont know if required, but I always stop LMS before making
the backup.

I suspect his rPi4 has a USB drive connected to it that holds his music
library (that's what I do). And this rPi4 is connected to his router
and on 24/7. if an rPi is running LMS, one should NOT simply turn off
the power to that rPi. That *could* cause corruption to the LMS
database/cache, SD card, etc. If one is turning off the rPi running
LMS, one should do a controlled shutdown (go to piCorePlayer main page
and select the "shutdown" menu item.

On the other hand, an rPi running only squeezelite (not LMS), one can
simply turn off the power. So he has this "squeezelite only" rPi
connected with all his audio equipment, and it sounds like he has a
master switch to turn off power to all this kit.

p.s. everyone running LMS on an rPi is using the rPi to access a music
library. That music library could be on a USB stick or drive connected
to the rPi itself, or could be a music library on a NAS that is mapped
to the rPi.

I'm sure you have a reason for this approach that I'm simply not
thinking about, but my first thought was why not avoid all this and plug
the USB drive directly into the rPi and mount from there instead of the
router. That's what many piCorePlayer users do.

Something odd is happening in your setup. Sorry, I have no suggestions
as to what to look at. However, as an alternative experience, I often
play 24/96 files on my Transporter and Touch players. If playing to my
BOOM or RADIO, LMS automatically downconverts to 24/48. I've had zero
issues playing these 24/96 files over the years. This has been true of
LMS running on Windows, on Linux, and most recently on piCorePlayer
setup on rPi4B or rPi3B+ units.

exactly. No value in having LMS running on your rPi unless you need an

doesn't work any better having LMS on the same rPi.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Struggling with LMS install

First make sure you're rPi is reporting as connected to the internet.
Click on Main Page, then the DIAGNOSTICS button, then click on
"Raspberry Pi" in the top menu. Scroll down to the bottom of that page
and you should see that the internet access items are green. (see
picture).

Yes that’s true. However if you want your rPi with LMS to be connected
via ethernet to your router, and your rPi player to be connected
elsewhere in the house farther way via either Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Then of
course you need separate rPi Units.

I use an rPi attached 4TB USB drive (powered from the rPi USB socket as
well). I have about 120,000 mostly FLAC files and it works well. I
keep the playlists folder etc on this drive. Not sure what you mean
about iTunes. iTunes in not needed in this setup. Just put your music
on a thumb drive or USB drive, and point LMS to the top directory of
your music, and do a "clear and rescan" of your music library, and it
will all show up.

Good. But to be clear, when you run Tidal master from the PC USB, you
connect the PC USB output to the converter, then from the converter, you
connect OPTICAL cable to the DAC? Asking because it is OPTICAL
connections that are sometimes limited.

no mistake. expanding to 100% is perfectly ok (that's what I do). And
the message you are getting is correct (can't expand any larger after
100%). And once expanded, one cannot downsize the card. So all is as
expected and OK.

not sure if this is your issue, but some DAC's optical connections won't
work higher than 48. Is it possible to test the DAC connection with
S/PDIF cable instead? (or can you go straight USB from rPi4B to the

Where are your music library files located? On a attached USB drive? On
a NAS, or ???From what you describe it is as if the rPi doesn't see
your file locations at the time you try to rescan. And at a complete
re-start, it is "finding" the files again.

Haven't seen such crashes/reboots. Just looked and my rPi4B, running
piCorePlayer 7.0.1 has been up and running continuously for 81 days.
Running LMS only, not squeezelite. Has 4TB USB drive attached with
music. USB drive gets its power from the USB port on rPi4B.

when you say, "saved settings" what do you mean exactly? Did you use the
save "image" function of piCorePlayer ver 7.0.1? If you did, you'd
burn that image file to the SD card and reboot rPi.

I suspect one doesn't have to save/copy the cache folder, but it hasn't
hurt anything in my case. And of course this backup/restore is only
dealing with LMS, not with piCorePlayer settings.

I assume you're following these instructions:

specifically the step here. Note that the "LMSfiles" used here can be
anything you want, but that's what you'll see once connected.

with Win32diskimager, *write* the piCoreplayer 7.0 image to the SD card.
No need to use the "verification" option in win32diskimager. I recall I
get an error like that if i try to do the verify AFTER writing the
image. So just write, then insert the SD card in your rPi and connect
to network. In my own case, I couldn't use the "'http://pcp.local\; to
find the IP address of my rPi.

' (http://pcp.local) Instead, just use some sort of free IP scanner
software on a computer or smart phone on your network, or login to your
router to see what's connected, etc. Then once you find it, just go to
a web browser and enter that IP address, e.g.:

and can one do this update *after* installing the piCorePlayer OS, or
does one need to insert a different SD card with a different rPi OS?

just save a copy of your "prefs" folder and "cache" folder, and you'll

3B+ runs LMS very well and works as a player well too. Some people like
the 4, because the ethernet and USB paths are separate, so those that
use a USB connected DAC to the rPi4 seem to like this potential
improvement. I have one instance of LMS running on a 3B+ and it's very
snappy and works well with about 115,000 tracks. I don't use the USB out
for a DAC (this 3B+ uses a hifiberry DAC+ hat instead to feed a preamp).

Duh! Yes of course. I wasn't thinking about just updating LMS on same
machine. (I had my mind focused on installing LMS from scratch (but
then returning my settings), as I had just been doing yesterday after
reflashing SD cards to piCorePlayer 7.0 and then getting LMS going from
scratch.

p.s. I did have an error message in trying to run Spotty, but it told

I just did this today. I copy the "cache" and "prefs" folders from
exisiting LMS setup and save on your computer somewhere. (see LMS >
Settings > Information, lower end of page for the locations of these
folders in your system).

Then I install 8.1 from scratch. Then STOP LMS, copy the old cache and
prefs folders to the same location on the new LMS, allowing the files to
overwrite the old files. Then restart LMS and you should have all of
your plugins and settings. Sometimes I may have to enter a password or
user ID again, maybe resetup SPOTTY, etc. But very, very little.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCorePlayer Documentation

2020-12-22 Thread garym

Note a typo picked up from another thread on a problem setting up Samba.
In setting up Samba, the user followed the instructions and "cut and
paste" items to be exact. The problem was using LMSfiles vs LMSFiles.
In the section on mounting the USB drive the user typed it as
/mnt/LMSfiles. (note the lower case f.) However, in the Samba Share
Path it was entered as /mnt/LMSFiles (upper case F). The user copied
and pasted from the instructions on the picoreplayer website. He said
he he read the instructions above the Samba set-up screen and it says:

When this has completed, scroll down to the “Setup Samba Share”
section and enter values for “Server Name”, piCoreLMS; “Share Name”,
LMSfiles; “Share Path”, /mnt/LMSFiles; and  “Create File Mode”, 0775;
then click on “Set Samba”

He copied and pasted "/mnt/LMSFiles" from above and he did not notice
the case difference from the USB entry. However, the picture does show
the correct LMSfiles.

Bottom line, it would be useful to change the reference to
"/mnt/LMSFiles" in the text to "/mnt/LMSfiles".

On the left side of WinSCP, navigate to something like the DESKTOP of
your PC. On the right side of WinSCP, highlight/select the folder
"cache", right click, and select DOWNLOAD. Then highlight/select the
folder "prefs", right click and select DOWNLOAD. This will copy both
folders to your PC.

Thanks ronnie! I've got plenty of turkey here. I'll have a beer instead
(well later, it's morning here).

It's been a while, but I think when I copied over the new cache and
prefs folders to the rPi, WinSCP may have just asked me if I wanted to
replace. Not sure. If not, I would have simply DELETED those folders on
the rPi first. Of course renaming would work too (cacheOLD and
prefsOLD). Deleting the two "uuid" lines is something that I learned
from @mherger. I think that it doesn't matter if one is never using the
old LMS setup, or not using it in the same network. But, say, you're
setting up two different rPis with LMS that will sometimes both run in
the same network. Something about the uuid names being identical will
cause some confusion.

Here's what I do.

1. In my old version of LMS running on an rPi with PiCorePlayer I copy
(download) the old "prefs" and "cache" folders using WinSCP to my PC.
These folders are in "/mnt/LMSfiles/slimserver/" (note "LMSfiles" is
the name I gave the mounted USB drive to my rPi, and you may have used a
different name. You can see the location by looking at the webGUI for

2. Once saved on the PC, in the "prefs" folder, I located the file,
"server.prefs" and open it with windows "notepad". Once open I search

first, have you followed the instructions on connecting your NAS to the
rPi via the network settings, etc. (all within the picoreplayer
instructions somewhere...I can't find at the moment, but I don't use a
NAS). Second, once that is done, then one simply browses to and selects
the location of the music files from within LMS > Settings > Basic
Settings tab > media folders. (this is the same as any LMS install,
regardless of operating system).

Until you install LMS, the 9000 port won't do anything. On the main
piCorePlayer page near the bottom there should be a place to click
"beta". Do that first. Then there should be a tab for LMS on the main
picoreplayer webpage. Click on this to get to the info on installing.

Yes, there are minor differences, but I recently followed the
instructions for all this and the minor appearance differences were not
important. Just follow the instructions here in the "how tos":

My ~113,000 track library, mostly FLAC, ran just fine on a rPi3B+
running LMS with piCorePlayer. Very responsive, etc. I've since moved
to rPi4 with 4GB, running LMS with about ~114,000 track library. But not
because it is really needed. These rPi units are so cheap, that I saw
no reason not to get the 4GB memory. Certainly not necessary.

Aha. Thanks. I guess in my own case, I save the "slimserver"directory
with the cache and preferences to my computer, and edit out certain UUID
info, that way after a new install of LMS, I can simply replace that
directory and I'm up and running. That's all independent of backing up
the SD card. I used this approach on my Vortexbox (Linux) LMS installs
as well in the past.

Cache is not needed to restore LMS. For example, if one stopped LMS,
deleted the CACHE, then restarted LMS, it would restart just find and
recreate the CACHE. At least that's my understanding.

probably depends. But I can report using directly connected USB drives
(powered only with the USB connection) on two rPi3B+ and on two
different rPi4B (using the USB3.0 slots). In all 4 cases I've been using
WD USB 3.0 drives, either 2TB, 3TB, or 4TB drives.

just waiting for it to mount will never work if there's not enough time.
piCorePlayer will try to mount the USB disk and if it doesn't mount in
the default time (I think 2 seconds), it skips it and never tries again.
That's why you need to manually change the seconds waited for mounting.
I changed my USB disk mount time to 6 seconds I recall and that solved
my problem. I'm not at home so can't give you the exact steps.
Somewhere in piCorePlayer tweaks I recall.

I've only used NTFS or exFat formatted drives. can you format to exFat?

I’m no expert, but the way I did it was to remove the SD card from rPi,
insert into PC then create image. Then return SD card to rPi. Sorry, I
have no idea if there is a way to read the card image from network and
save. If guessing, I’d say it is not possible.

I’m not clear on your follow up question. For example, I create an image
from a working SD card for two different rPi setups. I save both these
images with unique names on my computer. Then I can burn a new SD card
anytime I want for either rPi. Are you asking for something other than
this?

hmmm. I've used that update path process to change to LMS 7.9.3 (by
simply replacing 7.9.2 with 7.9.3). But I've not tried downgrading

hmmm, I guess I've never tried to do this (then again, I have about
113,000 tracks). I can do this using the dynamic playlists plugin,
where I can tell it to play randomly from some or all of my library

p.s. This is not a piCorePlayer 6.0 question. This is a question on

All tracks from an album? from your entire library? from an artist?

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Recommend a hard drive for Pi3/pCP6.1.0

2020-07-10 Thread garym

I've used several different 2TB to 4TB WD My Passport, selfpowered (USB
powered) portable HDs with both rPi3B+ and rPi4B setups. Never had any
issue. Some have reported problems with rPi4B ver 1, with drive plugged
into the USB3.0 slots on the rPi. I've not had that issue, but my
rPi4B's are ver. 1.2.

home.

on pCP main page, click DIAGNOSTICS, then on that page, click the tab
for "Rasberry Pi" (or some similar name, not where I can see my own page
right now)
