Re: how to make things happen at specific times

2009-04-08 Thread Peter Alcibiades

Sarah, thanks! The thing that still puzzles me is this. They come in and
start up the stack. They may do this every day, or they may leave it
running for a few days. Every day at 4pm it should send an email.

So yes, you could check the time when the stack is started, subtract the
time from 4pm, and then wait that number of seconds. But what happens the
next day at 4pm?

AHA,HE SEES IT!

You need a loop. First on startup find the time to 4pm. Then what happens
at 4pm is to send the email, wait a couple of hours, and invoke the 4pm
script again Yes, it should do it. Thanks.

How do Rev internet libraries work?

2009-04-08 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB
Hello,

I am still struggeling with socket time out problems with pure http:
requests at some customers with Win XP.

One of them is a school, where you always have very restricted access to the
internet. But the network admin told me that he has switched off the
firewall, all filters and routers and routed his test PC around the proxy
directly to the access point. Other apps have access to the internet - But
who really knows?

Does anybody knows, if the rev internet librarys take account of the windows
IP and network configuration, like proxy, DNS, etc. or do they make their
own way through the network?

Thanks

 going back to:

My apologies for being away and not noticing this post sooner.

Yes. To change this tooltip, go to the card where you have installed a
ListMagic widget. You will find a group with the name you called the list.
This is the header group. Go to custom properties for this group and select
cSSSTooltips. Then if you want to change the English tooltip, select the
*en* custom property and change it to whatever you would prefer. You will
also find the cSSSMenus here for the header. To make similar changes for the
list itself, change the custom properties of the same names for the field
that has the name you gave the ListMagic widget.

2009-04-08 Thread Sarah Reichelt
I am missing some basics of Mac handling. When copying my app folder
(including several apps) out of a DMG from CD into the program folder on HD
as an Admin, only the Admin can see and start my app. Every other user
 doesn't see my app folder.

What do I have to do, that my app is accessibly for every user? Can the
Admin set any permissions on my folder, so that it is accessible for
everyone? If yes, where and which rights?

On a Mac, there is a general Applications folder at the root level of
the hard drive.
Each user can also have their own Applications folder.
A user's Applications folder is not accessible to other users, so it
sounds as if the installation has been done into the user's folder,
not the general Apps folder.

RE: List Magic

2009-04-08 Thread Jim Bufalini
Hi Bernard,

Actually all features of ListMagic are enabled in the trial version. The
only difference is that the trial version puts a line every ten lines of the
listing saying that it is a trial.

So you can actually build everything with the trial version and when you are
satisfied that ListMagic fits your needs, you can register and the trial
lines disappear from any listings that you created with the trail version.

Re: how to make things happen at specific times

2009-04-08 Thread DunbarX
I need to understand how pending messages are stored.

But going back to the stone age, I have several alarms running at all,
er, times, and I have always used an idle handler to invoke them:

on idle
if the long time = 4:00:00 pm then
wait 100 -- as Sarah says, make sure this only happens once
   send yourMessage to whereEver
end idle

You could embellish this endlessly; case structures come to mind. I have
several library stacks always running with such handlers in them, so it
doesn't matter what working stacks might be open; the message is sent.

Re: How do Rev internet libraries work?

2009-04-08 Thread Bernard Devlin
Hi Tiemo,

I don't remember if Rev's internet library is just implemented in
transcript or not. However, if you are using a hostname instead of an
IP address when you are connecting to your server, then it will be
using the DNS configured in Windows.

When it comes to proxies, you can explicitly set the proxy address using:

set the HTTPProxy to host:portNumber

Obviously, if you're not doing that then I don't think you are going
to be using a proxy server if there is one and if it is configured in

I don't remember if Rev's internet library is just implemented in

IP address when you are connecting to your server, then it will be
using the DNS configured in Windows.

When it comes to proxies, you can explicitly set the proxy address using:

 set the HTTPProxy to host:portNumber

Obviously, if you're not doing that then I don't think you are going

I tried changing the en tooltip for the header group of a ListMagic

or stop filtering) and the tooltip appeared as expected while I
stayed on that card. I made no other change to the list. I saved the

original tooltip (A right-click allows many operations) had been
restored. Is there a way to make the tooltip change permanent? I
noticed also that the en menu text is also restored. (Note: the list

My apologies for being away and not noticing this post sooner.

Yes. To change this tooltip, go to the card where you have installed a
ListMagic widget. You will find a group with the name you called the
list.
This is the header group. Go to custom properties for this group and
select

cSSSTooltips. Then if you want to change the English tooltip, select the
*en* custom property and change it to whatever you would prefer. You
will
also find the cSSSMenus here for the header. To make similar changes
for the
list itself, change the custom properties of the same names for the
field

that has the name you gave the ListMagic widget.

Re: How do Rev internet libraries work?

2009-04-08 Thread Bernard Devlin
Hi Tiemo,

Even if every network does have its own proxy, the IP address of each
proxy is unlikely to be the same (and the port may also be different).

If your application is on a network where the users are not allowed
direct access to the internet (either for security or caching
reasons), then somewhere in your app you would need to have a
preference for setting the IP address port of the proxy. Once the
user has entered that information, then your app would need to save it
as some kind of file (a stack or text file), or in the registry. On
restart your app would re-set the proxy to the previously saved
settings. Without this information, if there is a proxy then it's
unlikely your app would ever be able to make an internet connection
(assuming the proxy is there for security reasons).

This would be the same for many other applications I suspect. I guess
it is possible to query the registry on Windows in order to find out
the proxy's IP address/port from there. I don't work much with
Windows any more, but that information should be available on the
internet.

I hope that is the kind of information you want.

Re: Multi Thread FTP

2009-04-08 Thread Bernard Devlin
Hi Warren,

Revolution is single-threaded. However, are you sure that you need
multi-threading? I'm asking this because you can use callbacks with
various internet actions in Rev, and this kind of event-based
interactivity might be sufficient. There's a very good presentation
by John Ousterhout (the man who designed Tcl/Tk) that puts forward a
very effective case for event-based processing instead of
multi-threaded processing (bottom line: only a small percentage of
programmers are capable of writing working multi-threaded code).

If you still need more than the event-based processing provided by
callbacks, then you could look at Mark Smith's libRevCurl. I referred
to it a couple of days back in a discussion on the list about getting
round the fact that the POST action of Rev's internet library does not
work with callbacks.

Mark's library will make calls to the CURL executable, and such calls
will all be independent of each other and will exploit the OS capacity
for multi-processing.

Set Script woes

I have a protected stack that creates a window and a group, then sets the

The only thing I could think of is that the window it creates is somehow
protected as well, but a similar answer dlog confirms that the passkey of
the new stack is empty.

Any clues or insights? Am stuck.

RE: List Magic

2009-04-08 Thread Jim Bufalini
Hi George

I tried changing the en tooltip for the header group of a ListMagic
1.1.3 list that only permits filtering (tooltip: Right-click to start
or stop filtering) and the tooltip appeared as expected while I
stayed on that card. I made no other change to the list. I saved the
stack. Then I went to another card and came back to find that the
original tooltip (A right-click allows many operations) had been

I've just tested this and the tooltip and custom properties remained as I
had changed them after saving the stack. I also tested putting more than one
widget on a card and changing the tooltip custom property differently for
each widget. These also remained as I had changed them after saving and
re-launching the stack.

Is it possible that you accidently hit the Modify button in ListMagic
itself? The custom properties do get restored, in this case, even if you
don't make any actual changes to the ListMagic widget(s) being Modified.
This will also happen to all widgets on all cards of all stacks and
substacks in a project, if you upgrade the project from one version of
ListMagic to another. These are all features. ;-)

Is there a way to make the tooltip change permanent? I
noticed also that the en menu text is also restored.

To permanently change the header tooltip for all ListMagic widgets created
in the future or modified in the future, you can:

- First make a backup copy of your ListMagic itself and project. ;-)
- Using the Application Browser, go to the Action tab of ListMagic.
- Alter the custom properties for the LMGerericHeader group. This is the
template used to create new headers.

 (Note: the list
is initially hidden and the list group and field are shown on the
press of a button. There is no manipulation of the list except hiding
it on openCard, and none at all on closeCard)

Just setting the visible property, to the best of my knowledge, does not
change custom properties of an object. Which version of Rev are you using?
Also are you using Rev's Property Inspector or GLX2's beta one?

Perhaps we should take this offline? In any case, I repeated the
problem on MY stack twice, once with GLX2's beta property inspector
and once with the standard one. I'm using Rev 3.0.0 build 750. I
made absolutely the minimum operations necessary to perform the test,
starting with a freshly-loaded stack (not empty, and fairly
complicated) and a freshly-started Rev IDE. I didn't launch the
ListMagic plugin at all. There are two ListMagic widgets on the card
in question. The first one shown at openCard has the default tooltip
(I never got around to changing it) and the second one shown after a
button press displays the problem.

Re: Set Script woes

2009-04-08 Thread Scott Rossi
You can't set scripts more than 10 lines long in standalone applications due to
Rev's inherent script limits. This is default behavior but I've *heard* that
if you approach the Runtime folks with a compelling argument for a specific
project, they *might* grant an exception.

I have a protected stack that creates a window and a group, then sets the
group script. Works a treat. When run as a compiled application exe, it no
longer sets the script (I know this because an answer dlog that should
display the script comes up empty instead).

The only thing I could think of is that the window it creates is somehow
protected as well, but a similar answer dlog confirms that the passkey of
the new stack is empty.

Any clues or insights? Am stuck.

Many thanks in advance,

Re: Set Script woes

2009-04-08 Thread Jim Ault

Hugh,

Jacque has probably hit the correct answer for you case. The 'set
script' strategy would work if the new group script was a call to a
compiled function in another script in the hierarchy. If your idea
was to customize the script, then set the script of an object to that
script, you should consider writing the compiled handler with
branching or params to handle variations.

Hope this helps.

Re: how to make things happen at specific times

2009-04-08 Thread J. Landman Gay

dunb...@aol.com wrote:

I need to understand how pending messages are stored.

But going back to the stone age, I have several alarms running at all,
er, times, and I have always used an idle handler to invoke them:

on idle
if the long time = 4:00:00 pm then
wait 100 -- as Sarah says, make sure this only happens once
   send yourMessage to whereEver
end idle

You could embellish this endlessly; case structures come to mind. I have
several library stacks always running with such handlers in them, so it
doesn't matter what working stacks might be open; the message is sent.

In general, idle handlers should be avoided. They take up lots of engine
time, and usually 99% of the time they execute, nothing happens.

Instead, Rev offers the send someMessage in time command that lets
you place messages in a queue, where they will execute at the time you
indicate. You can check this queue by looking at the pendingMessages
property, which is also available in its respective message box pane. By
placing an event in the queue, the engine isn't tied up needlessly by
constantly checking for something that usually doesn't have to happen.

In the example above, you could schedule a single event to take place
every day at 4 PM. Basically you'd calculate the number of seconds until
the next alarm time, and then queue the message to trigger at that time:

function getNextDueTime
  get the date 4:00 PM
  convert it to dateitems
add 1 to item 3 of it
  convert it to seconds
  return it - the seconds
end getNextDueTime

and in an alarm handler:

-- do alarm stuff, then retrigger next event:
send myAlarm to me in getNextDueTime() seconds

When the alarm goes off, your handler calculates the next due time and
inserts the new message into the pending event queue.

Pending messages are not saved between sessions, so you'll have to
reload any permanent alarms on each launch.

I have some heavily tested scripts for this which I can post later if

One caveat about pending messages Craig: they are not guaranteed to
happen exactly when scheduled. They will happen as soon as Rev is not
busy doing something else. In normal use, this is good enough, but it
means that you cannot rely on them for exact timings.

Re: how to make things happen at specific times

2009-04-08 Thread Sarah Reichelt
OK, here is a general function for scheduling an event:

command scheduleMessage pMessage, pHours, pMins
-- pHours is in 24 hour time
put the seconds into nextTime
convert nextTime to dateItems
put item 4 of nextTime into tHourNow
put item 5 of nextTime into tMinsNow

if tHourNow pHours or (tHourNow = pHours and tMinsNow = pMins)
then add 1 to item 3 of nextTime
put pHours into item 4 of nextTime
put pMins into item 5 of nextTime
put 0 into item 6 of nextTime

convert nextTime to seconds
send pMessage to this stack in nextTime seconds

-- Uncomment these lines for testing:
-- convert nextTime to short system date and long time
-- put pMessage scheduled for nextTime
end scheduleMessage

Call it as follows:

scheduleMessage sendEmail, 16, 0
to have it send the sendEmail command to your stack script at 4 pm.
On or after 4 pm, it will schedule the event for the following day.

The commented out lines at the end of the handler are useful when
testing to make sure it is all happening as expected.

For monitoring pending messages, I would like to recommend my Pending
Message Manager, available from http://www.troz.net/Rev/plugins.php.
Rev's Message box has a panel for this, but it shows the times in long
seconds which is unreadable, and it doesn't filter out glx messages
which is vital for any users of GLX2.

Re: Generating a phone call from Rev

Oopps. I thought that this was as simple as using Audio MIDI Setup to feed
the speaker output into the mic input, but unfortunately you do need a MIDI
mixer in the middle which is probably impractical :-(

The software option is to use WireTap Anywhere:

http://atmac.org/voip-phone-calls-for-aac-users/

but unless you already own this it is probably cheaper to go with your
Phlink option.

If you want to go the whole hog and set up a VoIP server such as Asterik,
there are Add Ons that handle Text-to-Speech:

http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+cmd+swift

Probably all too complex when compared to some of these services:

http://www1.sprintpcs.com/explore/ueContent.jsp?scTopic=txt2landline

http://www.networkworld.com/news/2008/081308-landlines.html?fsrc=rss-wireless

And because Sarah, you're in Oz, you can use smsPup:

http://smspup.com/smsServices.php?serviceIdentity=textToSpeech

Which only leaves sending SMS from Rev, which again can be done with
AppleScript:

http://www.smsmac.com/help/discover/applescript/

So back to Richard's original problem, if the 'client' isn't at his computer
then he probably isn't at his phone (which is next to the computer) either.
If he has a mobile phone then using AppleScript to SMS is probably a cheaper
option and provides the added benefit of a 'hard copy'. I can't imagine
anything worse than trying to scramble for pen and paper whilst receiving a
voice message saying, We have recived your order for part No: AXZS-564332,
part No AXXD-02594023,...;-( Having an SMS that I can cross-check when I
get back to my computer seems like a nice alternative.

Hi Paul,

I just dropped a data grid onto a card, selected it and executed
the following in the message box:

put the dgProps[column margins] of selobj()

I saw 8 appear. Are you getting empty?

Re: Getting Data Grid props

2009-04-08 Thread Paul Looney

Trevor,
You are keeping late hours.

The reason for my question about the margins is:
I use a 15 pixel dimension grid for laying out the objects in the
stacks in my business system. Thus all fields have a line height of 15.
This is smaller than the default data grid, so I have to change
change the row height to 15 and the margins to 5.
I was doing the margins with a repeat loop, but, obviously the
column margins is faster. Thank you, again.

It would be nice to be able to set the column margins in the Text
formatting panel of the Object Inspector - as one does with non-grid
fields.

Thanks for another great revision of Rev. I agree with Richard, this version
is a great step forward, and especially with the new behaviors and data
grid. Kudos to everyone involved!

Yes, there are still some properties that need to be added to the
property inspector in a future version and some others that need to be
fleshed out more.

For example, setting the color Header ('header background color') or
Header hilite ('header background hilite color') of a data grid
table in the Property Inspector allows for a single solid color. When
using the API you can actually set those properties to:

a) a solid color
b) two colors, one per line
c) a fillGradient array

(a) is the standard way to set colors on a Rev control. (b) takes the
two colors you pass in and creates a gradient for you automatically so
you don't have to worry about working with the fillGradient property.
(c) is for complete control as it allows you to customize the gradient
displayed in the header using the fillGradient array.

It would be nice to have UI for (b) and (c), or at least for (b). For
now you can just do something like this:

set the dgProps[header background color] of group Data Grid to
125,125,125 cr 240,240,240
