Stick to 4.11.2 - 4.12 should be released withing few days officially.

As for qemu-kvm-ev - yes, it's supposed to work - make sure to test new
versions obviously.

Did you got your new installation running fine ?

Re: Secondary storage problem

2016-12-27 Thread Sam Ceylani
ok seeding seems to be ok since console vm reported as running (cant tell for
sure, I am just guessing) I think it is best to logon to your hypervisor
machine and check the status for your vm and take a look at your vm console,
what is your hypervisor? what kind of setup you have?

NFS is working properly. I can connect it directly to the system. For
example: "mount -t nfs 192.168.1.28:/export/secondary /mnt/test" But
the system does not see it.

What could be the reason?

RE: Upgrading from ACS 4.2 to 4.8 - VR upgrade issue

2016-06-07 Thread Sam Ceylani
So check your firewall on your management server, test that connection. I
believe there are some new stuff introduced
that changed how routers and system vms connect to MS. But you said SSVM
connects fine right? What Hypervisor are you using?
Because I believe they changed system vm connections to ssh on xen for system
vms etc. and there was even a port number that I know
I put in to my firewall which wasn’t there before...

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your reply.

My SSVM and CPVM seems to work fine -- although I can't verify if they are
really using the new template or not, but my VR doesn't work even after I
destroy the VR and restart the network with clean-up option. So the VR is never
able to be started up after the upgrade. It kept on "Starting" state and
agent.log file shows it keeps on trying to connect to the link local IP but
never able to connect.

I tested the upgrade on a staging environment with just 1 VR, I have reverted
back the setup to 4.2 and now re-doing the upgrade again for the second
attempt, will see if it works. My production has around 10+ networks so I need
to ensure this works before I initiate the upgrade on my production server.

Thank you.

RE: Upgrading from ACS 4.2 to 4.8 - VR upgrade issue

2016-06-07 Thread Sam Ceylani
Same thing happened to me, upgrading from 4.5.2 to 4.8 and I had to restart
network with clean-up option checked for each network which rebuilds the router
VM. If your SSVM works
And if you can test it then I don’t see any problem rebuilding network(router
vm) with new template which took about 30 minutes for about 20 networks in
total...may not be an option
for large installations...how many routers you are running?

Dear all,

Could it be the VR is not able to use the new systemVM template because we
registered the template as Routing = NO? Will it resolve the problem if during
upgrade, we register the template as Routing = YES?

Based on the upgrade instruction at
http://cloudstack-release-notes.readthedocs.io/ja/stable/upgrade/upgrade-4.2.html
, it says that routing option should be "no", is this correct? Since the
systemVM template will also be used by VR?

Any advice is appreciated.

Looking forward to your reply, thank you.

Cheers.

Check how they are made here:

troubleshooting SSVM

 gives OK status?

on SSVM by wget command (wget http://192.168.76.5/isoname.iso)
 say cannot write to 'isoname
.iso' (No space left on device). i have problem
to register iso could you please tell me what can i do. by the way i have about

New Cloudstack Setup - SSVM Installing Template - MTU 9000 - Useful Information for you :)

2015-08-11 Thread Sam Ceylani
CS 4.5.2 - Shapeblue repo (http://packages.shapeblue.com/cloudstack/) - On a
new Install CS-452 did not create the storage network with the proper MTU
setting on Xenserver 6.5.0 SP1 (fully updated) network.
// MTU was set to 9000 for secondary storage nic (which was applied to NIC when
we checked SSVM) before zone creation and after waiting few minutes for network
to be created on Xenserver network
(VLAN-random-34) didn't have proper MTU setting for vlan34 network which fails
out of the box because you can't edit anymore for some unknown reason and
"really" hard to trace and resolve since error messages are also encrypted :)
and it works half the time which throws you off, typical symptoms are: SSVM
agent not connecting, agent stuck in disconnecting state, SSVM ALERT (this was
a good one), templates are stuck in "Installing Template" stage,
SSVM navigating to /mnt/SecStorage takes forever, SSVM check script takes about
10 minutes to finish, and half the time if you are lucky "it works" :) after
troubleshooting full day and half I wanted to share this, I know it is not
the right list to send this email but I just wanted to have this out there in
case if somebody is searching to see why his SSVM stuck in "Installing
Template" mode - Thanks for this great product guys...

P.S : Templates are much more reliable now, thanks for those improvements.

Sam

MTU 9000

2015-08-11 Thread Sam Ceylani
Long story short, if you are using MTU 9000 you better check every component
including virtual networks in between, so it was my fault, I thought underlying
card
and bond had already MTU 9000 applied so missed this little step to check
virtual stuff, ping with MTU 9000 does not fail by the way, anyways it was my
fault, I don't
even know if xen allows you to apply MTU 9000 to the network via API, Thanks,
Sam

Check vlan tag from database for this network, mine was missing once :) enter
it and you should be all set.

Have you experienced power loss before this happened?

Shut down VM, increase it from Hypervisor (unless your hypervisor allows online
size increase), update mysql table in CloudStack for that SR...it works :)

Hi all,
I have using CS 4.4.1 and we would like to extend in a VM with Windows Server

If I attach a new volume the OS doesn't allow me to extend the size of the C

What can I do?

Assigning IP address directly to Xenserver for Secondary Storage

2015-04-26 Thread Sam Ceylani
When we define a separate storage network for secondary storage (for example on
vlan34) on Xenserver 6.2, Cloudstack 4.4.1 creates this new network on
Xenserver for SSVM to reach secondary storage with proper vlan and everything
BUT since we can no longer issue any IP address with the same vlan (34)
directly on Xenserver (for xenserver to mount secondary) just using our bonded
interface, we have to create static routing from our router for xenserver to
access this secondary storage through its management interface. Are you guys
assigning IP directly to Xenserver after waiting for Cloudstack to create this
new network on Xenserver (using Cloudstack's newly created network name) and
using this network to issue IP address directly on Xenserver, I cant think of
any other way, any idea? thanks Sam

RE: Urgent : Xenserver Bond status change

2015-04-12 Thread Sam Ceylani
Only explanation I can come up with (and I didn’t want to send this email
because it could be wrong)
is since it is using VM's Mac address when registering with your switch
It might be normal in an active-active bond on public interface, since new VM
will have a different MAC, or MAC changes on virtual switch
I might be wrong but I know it uses VM's mac address, like I said it is hard to
pinpoint the issue but could be the case...
When I have time I will trace packets on an active-active bond to better
understand what's going on...

adding or removing a vm shouldn't affect management bond status unless when
cloudstack makes an API call to xen toolstack for adding or removing vm somehow
xenserver's management interface is bounced with that API call, I would check
xenserver logs under /var/log and you can determine the reason, i doubt it is
related to cloudstack, it could also be a spanning-tree or lacp issue, check

Re: Advanced Network Changing Public IP Range

I understand, when we tried this on a test account we weren't able to release
IP addresses without deleting user vms before, so what you are saying is we
shouldn't need to delete any user vms in order to destroy router vm right? was
it the case for you? because when we test to see if we could destroy router vm
we weren't able to since we also needed to destroy the network and thus we
needed to destroy all user vms, thats why some people suggested taking
templates of user vms and destroying user vm destroying network and finally
destroying router vm, I really need clear answer on this, step by step would
you explain how you were able to change public IP s without impacting user vms?

[PB] What do you mean by user IPs here? Are they acquired public IPs?, they
can be released from UI without any problem. But still SNAT IPs(public IP
of router VM) need to be deleted in-order to delete existing IP range.

So just changing the status of user ip to "removed" on mysql table and
adding new range for this user would be enough?
[PB] I am sure on this. But it worked for me sometime back when I had
similar situation. Theoretically, It should work but you may encounter
mysql foreign constraint issues sometimes as SQL tweaking in one table may
impact other tables with ip address data field as a foreign key.

So if i shut down all user vms and network router, add new ip range for
this user, restart router and it should assign the new IP address? or if
ips are marked as removed will it give me an option to destroy network
router so newly created router will have new range?
[PB] Try to see if you can remove SNAT IP of router VM after stopping and
destroying it from UI. If this works, no need to update DB entries. New
range IPs will be taken by router VMs when a new VM is deployed in the
account OR an existing VM is stopped and started again.

We are using basic networking with its all default configurations but we

Re: Network performance issue

2015-04-02 Thread Sam Ceylani
We use Freenas with ZFS also and it is notorious with NFS shares, we created a
dataset and shared on NFS and disabled sync option for this dataset from ZFS, I
forgot the command but it was something like zfs set sync=disabled
/tank/dataset something like that, it will fix it. This has really nothing to
do with cloudstack and xenserver which we use both...

available which can provide Web GUI which can help us to set per hour cost and

We found this issue in our testing as well. The reason is template_spool_ref
table is not getting updated with correct template_size So we see this error
"Unable to start instance due to can't find mapping in ObjectInDataStore table
for: org.apache.cloudstack.storage.image.store.TemplateObject@16352d04"

This is a product issue and needs to be fixed.

I have tried all day to find out what is going on there. I have destroyed and
recreated everything from scratch including the database and SystemVM seeding.
I have reverted to a plain setup without OVS or VXLAN and just one layer 2
network.

All machines can reach each other, mount the NFS storage etc, but I still get
the same errors. Please see the full relevant log here

I really am at my wits end because that just stopped working from one day to
the next and I have no idea why.

I hope someone can point me into the right direction.

But you are trying PPTP server behind VR ? If so - this DID work for me, though
NOT inside ACS, but on physical router, alos static nat from remote R to my R,

RE: web servers with SSL behind a VR and load balancing for SSL

2015-03-21 Thread Sam Ceylani
Not an issue but instead of building a dedicated haproxy vm in front of VR for
ssl termination I was wondering how you guys are handling load balancing for
port 443 since GUI doesn’t
have tools to install signed web server SSL certificate on VR so if we load
balance port 443
Then we would have to install certificate on each web server, ideally since VR
is using
HAproxy for load balancing, I was wondering if we can use it to terminate all
SSL sessions
On VR and communicate backend web servers on port 80? There was a feature
request for this and I have seen some screenshots about installing SSL
Certificates from GUI etc. I can find the link for that screenshot if you need
it.

Re: Resize DATA-Disk

2015-03-20 Thread Sam Ceylani
I misunderstand your question, yes mounting and unmounting is not the job of
cloudstack, what I would like to know is : You attach a Data volume, create a
file system and then create some files etc. then after resizing it and mounting
it back, are you loosing your filesystem and any of your files? this is what is
important for me to know, and I guess everybody else, ty sam

RE: Resize DATA-Disk

2015-03-20 Thread Sam Ceylani
I don’t know the logic of resizing a volume behind cloudstack but I always
resize it from command line on xenserver and it works, cloudstack might be
creating a totally new drive which defeats the purpose (I am going by your
description of the problem) of having a resize button there. I might be wrong
and it might be doing what is expected and your situation (storage, hypervisor
combo etc.) might not be allowing it, ty

There is a clean up process for a new install of cloudstack especially dropping
cloud database and running database creation script for creating it again, it
is typical for SSVM to show up for few seconds and shutdown (cycle) if your
template is not in place properly, basically creating vm, booting, trying to
image the hard drive of SSVM from template and finds nothing or has a problem
downloading it from secondary storage and shuts down. You may have to send us
management server log under /var/log/ to see at what stage it is failing,

Re: VR not able to ping public gateway for almost 3 hours then it WORKS...

2014-10-28 Thread Sam Ceylani
We thought about this possibility and truly checked every mac and every ip
everything on those 3 switches and everything is clean, we even setup a syslog
server and started logging everything from those 3 switches. Thats why we
configured a physical box with same IP address (after shutting down VR) and
checked mac address tables on those switches and we even had stp setup for
redundancy we considered this possibility and removed redundancy and stopped
stp removed reduntant cabling to see if it would help nothing so far pointing
to network setup or switch ports or ip address, we even placed the xenserver on
the very switch that internet was connected and still the same problem of
waiting 1-3 hours before it starts pinging...

One thing we realized during those checks was one of our management router, we
were using with DHCP (same management network but ip ranges for cs and from our
router was different) and we realized this was a big mistake since cloudstack
was using its own DHCP on the management network and we disabled that, it is
not really related to our public network and it was being used to issue dhcp ip
address to wireless clients (our ipads, laptops etc.) and we thought different
ip ranges would be ok but it wasn't so we disabled itjust a side note.

I would like to also mention one other thing : When we first setup we
immediately checked other system vms (this is our second or third setup due to
this public ip problem) SSVM came up and started pinging right away, then we
checked Console proxy and it hesitated for almost 10 minutes and started
pinging but it was quick, we have this problem of 1-3 hours timeframe with only
routers. In previous setups we also seen SSVM and Console proxy hesitating for
sometime but came up quicker then routers.

This iptables -L being very slow to respond when it is not working is the very
significant symptom we found so far, we just sit for few hours and issue
iptables -L and if it responds very fast then we know we can ping the
gateway...and sure enough we can

VR not able to ping public gateway for almost 3 hours then it works.

Cloudstack 4.4.1 (new install) and Xenserver 6.2, public and management
networks are not tagged and using vlan1. For some reason when VR is created its
not able communicate with its public gateway for almost 2-3 hours and all of a
sudden it starts pinging. After it starts pinging then restarting VR etc. is
not a problem and it starts working as soon as it comes up but problem happens
again when router is destroyed and created again and we have this same problem
of not being able ping gateway for sometime, it takes 30-45 minutes to starts
working again sometimes 2-3 hours. We have 3 HP switches and first one is
connected to internet gateway and through untagged ports on those 2 other
switches (through trunk port) xenserver hosts connected via (active-passive)
bonds. Iscsi (primary storage, vlan 30,31,32,33) nfs (secondary storage vlan
34), guest (500-550) public (vlan1) management (vlan1). We logon to virtual
router and issue iptables -L and response is very slow (when it starts working
response is very fast) we tried to traceroute gateway ip and response is very
fast blank * * * displayed for all those 30 hops. ifconfig -a displays all the
right information for network interfaces. We tried to remove and reinsert egress
rule (ALL) back but that didn't help we would still have to wait for few hours
for router to start pinging again. We tried to use this same IP on a physical
machine connected to this same switch on an untagged port and it works as soon
as we configure this same IP. We can ping this VR from outside and it responds
OK so we know that network configuration is OK, We are thinking about firewall
rules not downloading in a timely manner but we checked /var/log/cloud.log file
on the router but there is really no change before and after (pinging) so we
really don't know how to troubleshoot this problem any furt

If requested, I can upload cloud.log file from VR, we compared this log file
with a working one (VR) and no difference between them,

Template file and CS 4.4.1 downloaded around Oct 6,

I know it is hard to troubleshoot this kind of issue but if you can point me to
possible causes that will be perfect so we can start from somewhere to
troubleshoot this problem,

When we used tcpdump on the router we realized that before it starts working we
have more stuff displayed (conversations about almost every network activity on
the switch) and when it starts working almost %60 reduction in tcp
conversations from all interfaces on the router...

Thanks,

if yoy upscaled your router and didnt check the box for HA that may explain it,
it needs to restart your router... if this is the only vm router may shut down
and may not come up due to no running guest to service check that also...

Subject: HA issue and Xen resets

Hi All,

I'm new to cloudstack and busy testing out ACS 4.3.1 on Centos 6.4 using
Xenserver 6.2. I have the management server setup and have 2 xen servers that
I'm testing out at the moment; specifically the HA functionality.

After getting an instance up and running I yanked the network cable out of the
one xen server and awaited the HA awesomeness to kick in. Both hosts still
remained in "Up" state even though the one was no longer pingable and the
instance that was hosted on that xen host still showed "Running" even though I
also couldn't ping it. After some reading one suggestion was setting
'alert.wait' to 30 and restarting cloudstack-management. After that didn't seem
to do anything after waiting a while I rebooted the management server all
together and found that both hosts were marked as disconnected.

I've tried going in and out of maintenance mode and ended up deleting the one
xen host that was still reachable thinking I could just re-add it but I
received an error in doing so. I have read somewhere that once you've either
reinstalled the management server or removed a xen host you need to re-install
the xen host. Is this true? I was hoping for a factory reset command of some
sort.

Besides my obvious HA problems and host disconnect issues which I'd love some
pointers on are there any pointers on Xen server resets?

Note I have attempted a 4.4.0 install on centos and after a couple issues that
I can no longer recall I ended up with a way easier install on 4.3.1 which is
why I've stuck with it for now.

Any pointers will be greatly appreciated. Willing to try anything!

Re: Problems Creating Templates in CloudStack 4.4

i think your initial problem was nfs being slow and timeout but when i looked
at your logs i can see that dom0 on xenserver still using this volume hence
your attempts are failing, i experienced the same issue and if you open
xencenter you will see the mapping from dom0. Technically you need to unplug
this VDI which i wasnt able to achieve since dom0 is a very special VM i think
someone with experience on xenserver can explain both of us with the right
command sequence so we can create template for this volume...

there is a timeout setting in global configuration and you can increase the
timeout value from there, make sure you restart your management service, i
believe it is 10800 seconds, are you using nfs for secondary storage? which
sometimes can be slow due to all sync writes

Re: ACS 4.4 XenServer 6.2 how to upgrade to ACS 4.4.1

2014-10-04 Thread Sam Ceylani
when you are creating vms using a w2012 template choose windows 2008 server
type from drop down box and you should be ok, in change log i can see that they
resolved this problem with 4.4 but upgrade is not easy for you because of
manual changes required in mysql database, if you are familiar with executing
queries it is very easy,

Re: ACS 4.4 XenServer 6.2 how to upgrade to ACS 4.4.1

2014-10-04 Thread Sam Ceylani
steps are different for each cloudstack version, for example upgrading from 4.3
would be slightly different then 4.2 or 4.1 and also upgrading is different for
each hypervisor type and also depends on your setup. I know you need step by
step instructions but they are all different. best is googling "upgrading
cloudstack from 4.3 to 4.4" and in docs those steps are very well documented, I
used the same steps and if you cant find the link for docs I can email it to
you.

I was getting "W2012 is not supported on xenserver" error (I was getting "not
enough capacity" cryptic error message from cloudstack and after digging a day
or so I found the real reason for failing vm was xenserver, according to
cloudstack is not capable of running W2012, which is not the case) and after
choosing w2008 for template and not choosing W2008R2, I was able to install
W2012 so try this solution first before upgrading and it should resolve it,

make sure loopback address in the database and actual address on nic are same,

Re: ACS 4.4 XenServer 6.2 how to upgrade to ACS 4.4.1

2014-10-03 Thread Sam Ceylani
I recently upgraded to 4.4.1 and overall upgrade is easy but I dont think you
can upgrade it with such a simple command since it involves intalling
(preseeding) sys template and manually changing settings from mysql tables to
reflect this change. If your distro is repo based, you manually need to change
setting from 4.3 to 4.4 in your cloudstack repo file and also 4.4 upgrades
your java to 1.7 and I think they fixed few major bugs recently and sys
template is upgraded to 64 bit if I m not mistaken (with debian 7 I believe).
Most problems are resolved with 4.4.1 update and on our system with xenserver
working fine. If you are using it in production env. then I would wait couple
of months to upgrade to 4.4.1 and this version is more sophisticated then
previous versions. It seems to be more complete, predictable and more robust and
I really appriciate for those new features and bug fixes. I would suggest
reading documentation for 4.4 upgrade depending on your version so there are
some few things you have to complete "before" upgrading to 4.4.1...

Re: Using cloudstack-set-guest-password with a desktop environment

2014-10-02 Thread Sam Ceylani
I replied to your email about script ending with .sh and I fixed the problem
with removing .sh extension from script and placing it under /etc/init.d
folder, I used "chkconfig cloud-password-script on" ( I dont remember the
script name) and service installed fine, I had to adjust firewall port also to
make sure it communicates with VR and made sure script runs before most of the
other services,

Hope this helps,

Re: Initial Infrastructure Deployment

2014-09-29 Thread Sam Ceylani
Freenas is FreeBSD based software appliance (iso distrubution) and will not be
on Centos. You mentioned Xenserver 6.2 and KVM which one? Both are hypervisor
software, you cant use both ( technically yes, recommended no) you also have
100 Mbps nics which will cause some performance issues. Freenas is using ZFS
file system which needs to be tweaked heavily for NFS to work with, (legacy
file system UFS is also available but they will drop supporting it in near
future) you mentioned XCP I assume It is Citrix Cloud Platform and it is not a
hypervisor, CS management server needs 4 GB memory 500 gig hd and thats all you
need, no need for performance or ssd hds on that machine, I dont understand the
need for iscsi hds for CS mgmt server, nothing happens on that server. Primary
freenas will need more than 2 nics given that you have 10 tb space assuming you
will need more than 160MBps bandwith ( 80MBps each with MPIO with ISCSI and not
using NFS which is not capable of MPIO, but bonding is available for NFS)

There are a lot of things wrong with your setup here, you cant deploy Freenas
with ZFS using NFS unless you turn off syncing for that NFS dataset otherwise
it works but you get 10MBps write speed which is ridiculuous really and if you
turn off syncing you better have some good UPS connected to it otherwise you
may end up with corrupted file system ( Not ZFS itself but NFS dataset may get
corrupt)

You said high on IO for primary server but if you dont have the bandwith? with
2 Nics what good is it? even one of your hd may fill that bandwith really
quickly...

Big or small you cant deploy this...

Re: Does management server have to be able mount NSF Share on a storage network?

2014-09-26 Thread Sam Ceylani
Hi Kirk,

Thank you for your answer, I asked this question about creating static route
beween management and storage network requirement on citrix discussion forums
and it seems to be, (a citrix employee said) in the past this was a requirement
but recent versions of cloudstack (he didnt mention version levels) it is no
longer required and from cs coding point of view it is fixed and no longer
required.

Yes we will dedicate a bond from xenserver to secondary storage device so
hypervisor will be able mount secondary storage.

In our previous attempts we have seen cloudstack creating vlan network
automatically on hypervisor for its ssvm to use and access to secondary
storage. Now we need hypervisor to also be able to access to this secondary
storage. So I believe we should assign an ip address on xenserver using this
bonded storage interface with the same vlan tag. So we create a bond, create a
vlan network out of this bond, and assign ip on Xenserver using our new vlan
interface and that should take care of hypervisor connectivity and also SSVM
will use cloudstack's automatically created vlan tagged network out of this
same bind and cloudstack assigns an ip from storage pool ip to this SSVM
virtual interface, is that correct?

Thanks again,

sam

Re: Does management server have to be able mount NSF Share on a storage network?

2014-09-26 Thread Sam Ceylani
Hi Kirk,

Thank you for your answer. We are using Citrix Xenserver 6.2 and for storage
server Freenas 9 with ZFS. I have been reading past emails on the list about
setting up storage network and they are talking about creating a static route
on their switches between management and storage networks and this seems to be
a requirement. So I guess this is for management server to access to secondary
storage, I personally tested twice (without this static route on the switch, I
didn't know this info back then) and CS 4.3 (I am using CS 4.4 now) was not
able to start SSVM or Console Proxy servers and I decided to just use
management network to access secondary storage and it works out of the box. So
question is beside this requirement of initial install of system VM from
management server via systemvm download script (I mounted secondary on
management server and run this script, some people suggests using it from the
nfs nas server with -t template option to not to mount nfs on on management
server), do we have to use a static route on our switches between management
and storage network for secondary shares? this information is not in
documentation and documentation has very conflicting information about pinging
networks and some requirement of pings needs to fail etc. If you can explain
this I would really appreciate it...Thanks again, Sam

Hi, Sam. Besides during (default) installation, the management server
only needs to access the secondary storage NFS share if you are using
vSphere since the management server propagates the systemvm.iso for
VMware hosts. If you're using vSphere, just make sure the management
server can reach the NFS server and mount the share. It doesn't need to
be on the same network as the NFS server. Template uploading and
downloading is handled by the SSVM and not the management server.

If we have a separate storage network, does it have to be accessible from

Storage Network Setup does MGMT Server have to be able mount this NFS share?

2014-09-25 Thread Sam Ceylani
When setting up a separate storage network in apache cloudstack 4 , does mgmt
server has to be able to mount the secondary nfs storage? Another words I can
understand template upload from a website, mgmt server makes the request to
ssvm and ssvm downloads it directly from a web server locally or on the
internet for templates or isos but how is downloading templates to your pc
works from mgmt website if we are not mounting nfs on the mgmt server?
Unfortunately very few resources available in detail about setting up storage
network in Cloudstack 4, ty sam
