You could take a look to Uriana (https://www.assembla.com/spaces/uriana/wiki).
Though it is still under development, it provides a mobile library that
could help you so much to get your mobile apps ready and working.

Carlos, Elena & Arvind hello
I have a very straight forward question to you and everyone else on this
list:
Is flex really relevant for mobile?
This is asked due to its dependency of the regular stage display list, and
inability to take advantage of stage3d performance.
Why should anyone choose flex over feathersUI for mobile development?
I love flex mainly for web desktop apps
But it seems like it needs to be re-written on top of stage3d to be
relevant for mobile
And that's exactly what Josh did when he created feathers...
Your thoughts?

Hi,

Depends on your application - not all applications need stage3d, if you writing
a 3d game then sure but your typical Flex application probably doesn't need it.

In my experience, if performance isn't an issue (and it's usually not Flex runs
is fast on modern phones), it comes down to how much of your desktop
application code do you want to rewrite to make it work on mobile and do you
have the time and budget for that? Using Flex on both mobile and desktop may
save you time and money.

Thanks,
Justin

Re: With ref to- Creation of mobile/tablet apps in Flex projects

HI Ajar

You must remember that feathersui- as the name says-- is for UI components.

Whereas for business//enterprise apps Flex has everything needed (you can
create skins for flex apps and they look pretty nice- atleast for business /
enterprise apps→ again games etc require a different level of graphics/ visual
layout so that use case is covered well by FeathersUI + Starling framework.

If you look at the activity of Apache Flex- adoption of flex has only increased
after Adobe licensed out Flex to the Apache foundation. Many people would say
that had Macromedia been in charge of Flex (and not been taken over by Adobe)→
they would never have given up Flex (like Adobe has done) The level of
maturity of Flex, the kind of support/documentation/books/tutorials it has are
simply incomparable. I worked with JavaScript for some time before I turned to
Flex (as it turns out I brought a Flash Builder license a few months before
Adobe open sourced Flex- again something I find difficult to believe). And I am
simply shocked as to why there is such hype surrounding Js based mobile apps--
its a real pain to create an app of any complexity in JavaScript.

I think maybe that's because Flash is Adobe’s proprietary tech→ so all the
other biggies are shutting Adobe out by adopting JavaScript?

I think I digressed a bit from your question- just thought I would let you know
how I feel about Flex when compared with JS(in addition to your question about
feathersui) :)

Yours sincerely,
Arvind,
Dievs Software.

RE: With ref to- Creation of mobile/tablet apps in Flex projects

2013-06-05 Thread Mark Line
FeathersUI has a lot of features missing compared to Flex although for basic
things its fine.

A while ago I rewrote an app from Flex to feathers to see what performance
gains I could get:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.indecentmonkey.eggtime
rair

It took me almost twice as long to rewrite the app in Feathers then using
Flex, that said it's probably because there was a learning curve with
feathers.

I wouldn't write off Flex for mobile. I think it does a great job. Keep the
display list minimal and it works like a great! On current devices (I was
testing on a nexus 4) the only difference between the starling and flex
verison I could really find was the app start up time

Re: With ref to- Creation of mobile/tablet apps in Flex projects

2013-06-05 Thread Ajar
Elena, I'll be extremely happy to be able to use flex for mobile
it would save me a lot of headache in layout and data architecture
it is mature, modular boutique framework to my taste
and yes of-course, anyone can choose what they want
I'm not here to negate flex, but to surface a critical issue for its
relevancy
I'd love to see flex flourish.
I ask this to open the discussion on mobile development.
a discussion that would hopefully yield a direction that can match
and surpass the current mobile development alternatives.

Justin, flex is far better development wise then feathers to my needs.
feathers is aiming to add some ui capabilities to games, and my needs are
list based/ screen based applications.
this is far more suitable to build in flex and would take a lot less time
and code sharing would indeed be a treat.

When I'm talking about performance, I wasn't implying games first-person
shooter syle, but screen transitions, lists swipes and easing general
rendering and responsiveness

Mark, your words are very reassuring.
I'll be extremely happy to find out I was dead wrong and flex can pull
through
and as devices become stronger in processing power, the more relevant flex
would be for mobile.
I'll definitely give it a shot and report back.

cheers everyone
Ajar

Re: With ref to- Creation of mobile/tablet apps in Flex projects

2013-06-05 Thread Carlos Velasco
I think the answer to your question depends on the software you are
planning to develop. In my experience FLEX works good with form-based
applications, such as managing, registering or so, where development times
are significantly lower than using other alternative technologies and the
final app performance is acceptable.

I would stand out of the flex way for hardware consuming apps though.

By the way, Uriana helps a lot (in my opinion) to develop medium-large
mobile modular applications, as it provides several framework prebuilt
pieces to deal with common mobile issues.

Hope that helps.

If you know my work you know that I've done lots of mobile projects over
the last 3 years. Many of them Flex and FeathersUI. While feathers is nice
there are situations that stage3D is actually a bad thing. There are always
trade offs and for some projects it just doesn't work. I had to port an app
from Feathers to Flex because feathers was croaking. It was unexpected but
true.

Re: AIR target for windows 8 mobile

2013-06-05 Thread Jeffry Houser

You'll have to ask Adobe. The Apache Flex project has no control over
the AIR Runtimes. I suggest starting with the Flash Platform Roadmap,
here: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplatform/whitepapers/roadmap.html

Adobe had previously said they would support Windows 8 Metro apps; and
then changed their mind.
I was under the impression that Adobe had no plans to support Windows
8 Mobile.

[If you want to file a bug/feature request to Adobe; I'd vote for it]

Re: Code analysis tool

Hi people. I found a project on GitHub by Peter Heoche. He has fixed
various issues with Adobe's FlexPMD, added new rules, etc. You can download
his jars from here: https://github.com/PeterHoeche/adobe-flex-pmd/downloads

I use the tool in command line, and it works great.

RE: Issue with MediaPromise.LoadPromise

2013-06-05 Thread Jesse Hellyer
For this issue: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FLEX-33558

We have tracked down the culprit to the line of code:
mpLoader.loadFilePromise(mediaPromise);

I have posted a video of the behavior here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QufH1ElqXo&feature=player_detailpage

The video is blurry because I was taking it on an Android device, while
simultaneously trying to run through the steps causing the behavior.

If anyone can help, or has done any work with MediaPromise or CameraUI,
please let me know. Thanks everyone!!

Re: AIR target for windows 8 mobile

2013-06-05 Thread Alex Harui
Also note that, if we get Flex on HTML/JS/CSS off the ground, then Flex
should run on Win8 mobile via Cordova and not AIR.

Re: Issue with MediaPromise.LoadPromise

2013-06-05 Thread Alex Harui
Hi Jesse,

This is not my area of expertise at all, but I noted that you are
describing issues with low-level Flash/AIR APIs, and not Flex code
itself. A good test is to build out a small test case that does not use
Flex and see if you have the same issue. If you do, then you may have to
seek support from Adobe. So far, nobody on the mailing list seems to have
experience with this issue.

Flex app using images

2013-06-05 Thread Deepak MS
Hi there,

Just wanted to check if we can built an app in flex by using sliced
images(all the screens of the app) from a UI design done in Photoshop(or
any UI editing tool), without any performance issues?

I have been working on iPad apps by just skinning the components. But
sometimes there are some UI designs which are difficult to achieve by
skinning.

Hence wanted to know if we can extensively use images to build an app in
flex. Something like these:

http://dribbble.com/shots/172145-Mobile-admin-dashboard-iPad-UI-UX-iOS

http://dribbble.com/shots/722800-Experiment-with-Metro-UI/attachments/68300

Kindly let me know what can be the best approach.

Cheers,

Deepak
