Sure can. I did it at work. I know that some have apparently had bad
experiences so you have to evaluate that possibility, but I have both OOo and
LO installed on XP at work and the install over the top went without problem.
BTW, I also did it at home on W2K. Note - I do not use Quickstarter so no
conflict there.

It's an issue:
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/release-notes/

For Windows users that have OpenOffice.org installed, we advise
uninstalling that beforehand, because it registers the same file type
associations.

The issue is that LO uses the same executables as OOo (swriter, etc) and
hasn't yet cleaned up the code to use something else (lowriter, etc).
This can cause *considerable* issues with OOo and LO coexisting on the
same Windows system. If you want to have both installed (on Windows -
it's no issue on linux) at the same time, then I'd suggest installing
'in parallel', see:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_in_parallel

So at this point (on Windows) you are better off with either/or: OOo or
LO, but not both at the same time.

Note: before well known user(s) on this list jump in with comments
regarding linux installs; you can indeed run OOo/distro-OOo/LO-standard
(non-PPA et al) on a linux system without any issues *at all*. In fact
you can run them *all* at the same time. So before you post that you
can't, start a new thread and prove me wrong - with details & facts.

They are all selected in the install as default and you need to go through

You installed Windows all-languages right?
The real issue about dictionaries, for my view of it, is that even
though you speak Spanish, you speak a local version of it and need to
have that spell checking system. For English, each region have their
own spelling of standard words. Britain English spells words like
"color" as "colour". Ask any kid in US schools to tell you what they
are told when they use the "other" word spelling. I was told that we
spell out works our way and do not use any other spelling of these word
even if it is a "proper" spelling in the dictionary. This from an
English teacher when I was young. I used a dictionary to help spell my
word in a paper. Now we have many different version of English,
Spanish, German, and many other languages. There are 4 different
spelling dictionaries for French. One have a "reform 1990" on its
title. Over the years "people with the power" decides what is the
correct spelling of our words, if there are several "correct" ways to
spell it. I took college English and a few years later there were new
books out telling you that everything you were taught in college [or any
other school] a few years ago no longer is correct and not excepted
anymore. The same goes with spelling words. So each localized version
of a language will have different ways to spell the same word that are
proper for their region and not proper for a different one.

I recommend using Synaptic to remove everything associated with
LibreOffice - libreoffice*, libure, all the elements of libreoffice
and all the libobasis elements. It usually takes me two runs - the
first to get the outer level stuff (and checking every box that comes
up), then another to remove the libobasis elements.

If anyone wants it, I modified my LO installation script to allow for
a different directory name than what "should" match the tarball. Note
this this script should be fairly easy to modify to use rpm instead of

dir=$new

if [[ ! -d $dir/DEBS ]]; then
echo "I can't see a DEBS subdirectory - check your tarball again."

cd $dir/DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
if [[ -d desktop-integration ]]; then
cd desktop-integration
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

echo "Shall I delete $dir?"
read nm
if [[ "$nm" == "y" || "$nm" == "Y" ]]; then

Vladimir,

The Table of Contents is formatted based on a variety of styles -
'Contents Heading' 'Contents 1' 'Contents 2'. You can control the format
of your contents table by changing the paragraph style using Format >
Styles and Formatting. The character styles, say for example for the
hyperlinks (blue underlines), can be changed using the same method.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Base form editing/creation impossible, missing dialog boxes and Menu bars

2011-02-25 Thread Don C. Myers

Update:

Here is how I have been installing LibreOffice:

  1. Downloaded the Debian version from LibreOffice.org
  2. Extracting the download to the desktop
  3. In the terminal running the following commands: (The exact
 commands vary with the version)
  4. sudo apt-get remove libreoffice*.*
  5. sudo dpkg -i
 ~/Desktop/LibO_3.3.1rc2_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/*.deb
  6. sudo dpkg -i

~/Desktop/LibO_3.3.1rc2_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/desktop-integration/libreoffice3.3-debian-menus_3.3-8_all.deb

The first time I installed LibreOffice I ran "sudo apt-get remove
openoffice*.*" I'm assuming I should be running "sudo apt-get remove
--purge libreoffice*.*" or openoffice to though to get rid of anything
old. So I just did the following:

In the terminal I ran the command for "sudo apt-get remove --purge
openoffice*.* . It found some leftover open office files and suggested a
command to delete them, which I did. Then I did "sudo apt-get remove
--purge libreoffice*.*" to completely get rid of anything old from
LibreOffice. I had deleted all of the Java off my system, so I
reinstalled the current version of 1.6.0_24 so something was there for
Java for LibreOffice, and then reinstalled LibreOffice 3.3.1. The issue
is still the same with LibreOffice base working extremely slowly. I've
not yet successfully found a way to get back to Java version 1.6.0_22. I
never had any issues in the past though. Everything just always worked
fast until now!

Two possible solutions (in Windows Explorer):

1) Right-click on a file of the type you want to move from default OO

be sure to check the box "Always use this program"

2) Click "Tools" and "Folder options...", then click on the "File

For reasons related to the second part of this, I noticed this too. I
thought it was both odd and annoying because...

(Part 2)

I really detest the new LO icon scheme. The program icons (for
launchers, etc) are flat and boring, although at least they are now in
different colors, which is not quite as boring as the graphics
themselves. What I find more annoying is that the icons for the
buttons inside Writer, Calc and so on are not only flatter and more
boring than their predecessors, they are LARGER, which not only cuts
down on the amount of screen left over for the document(s)
itself(themselves), it also reduces the number of buttons that can
appear on each toolbar line, thus completely obscuring many features
that are on the right ends of those toolbars, some to the point of not
working right at all.

For example, the font color control button is now off the right end of
the main toolbar, and that prevents its down-arrow function (open the
color palette to select the deisred color) from operating at all - it
only sets the selected text to the current default color, which is,
essentially, useless.

Can we please have the nice, smaller icons that were in OOo 3.2.1 (or
something like them and smaller than the current icons) back?

(So how did I notice that the OOo icons had been supplanted by the LO
icons? I opened an OOo window to see the old icons that I liked
before, but they were gone)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Problem with Base in 3.3.1

2011-02-25 Thread Don C. Myers
Thank you for the help. I do know that the Java 1.6.0_24 update came
through about the same time as I did the LibreOffice upgrade. So it may
have just been coincidence that I had the problem with LibreOffice 3.3.1
and not 3.3.0.

I completely uninstalled Java 1.6.0_24 and unchecked the Partner
software source. I actually had several of those. However, when I go
back to find sun-java6-bin using synaptic it isn't there. I did do a
refresh of the repositories before I tried to find it. I would
appreciate knowing where you found it.

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] Separate alignment in TOC

2011-02-25 Thread Rhot

Hello!

Recently I faced quite annoying problem regarding table of contents
formatting.

My story:

All my colleagues at work (including the director) use MS Word 2007, but
I prefer LO.
So, my boss ain't against my fairy use of open-source software, but he
requests to follow certain rules of formatting while composing documents.

There is interesting formatting of TOC in our organization. A table of
contents is actually double-aligned! Firstly, the text of headings is
aligned to special value, secondly, page numbers are strictly aligned to
the right side of the page.

For the screen-shots of proper alignment in Word 2007 refer to
http://community.i-rs.ru/index.php/topic,20227.msg112289.html#msg112289.

I found no solution for OOo on that Russian board. Nevertheless I hope
to find answers here.

All the best,
Vladimir.

Only one bug filed regarding digital signatures & that is for a smart card:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31359
[ Problem to sign documents with smart card]
So I'd recommend filing a bug report.

Also see:

to see if perhaps its a configuration issue.

Thank you.

Download and install the language and help packs for those languages.
You can go to LibreOffice.org's download page and use the
"Other way to download LibreOffice, the productivity suite" option.
Click on you .deb type - I use 64-bit Ubuntu so it is Linux x64 (deb)
Click on the "Languagepacks" and you will get the full list of the languages
you can install. There are 113 localized languages.

You can use the "boxed" option above that, but my way you can click on every
language in a group - Alt right-click - and not need to go through any
more steps

that that.

Once you download the language packs you want, you will need to install
the deb files
in order [?] like you would need to do if you used the *sudo dpkg -i
*.deb* command[s]

for each folder of deb files.

When you use Windows version you can choose multi-language that has included
for your choice in "custom install" a limited amount of languages that
is "felt" to be
the more used ones. Or, you can use the Windows all-languages install
and have the entire

list of languages to choose from, so it is a larger set of files.

[libreoffice-users] Problem with Base in 3.3.1

2011-02-25 Thread Tractor

Hi,

I used Open Office from the time it was in beta. When LibreOffice 3.3.0 came
out, I switched. I applaud what the document foundation is doing.

Two days ago I upgraded to LibreOffice 3.3.1. The updating went perfectly.
I'm running it on Ubuntu 10.10. There is a major bug in the base program
which did not exist in 3.3.0. I have a database with about 2400 records. The
form opens a little bit slowly. But the BIG problem is if I try to go to the
end of the database in the form once it opens, it takes anywhere from 30 to
60 seconds depending on the speed of the computer. I have 4 different
computers I use this database on, and all are doing the same thing. I
thought it might be a java issue, so in tools/options/java I checked my java
versions. I had the most recent one from Ubuntu, which is 1.6.0_24, and it
also showed 1.6.0_20 installed. 1.6.0_24 was the one selected by default. I
selected the 1.6.0_20 and tried it. I had the same issue. I then deleted
Iced Tea, and the older version of java, 1.6.0_20, so that the only java on
my system is 1.6.0_24. Nothing I did made any difference to resolve this
issue. The database worked perfectly in 3.3.0 on all of the computers.

Any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated. The database is
very important in my work, and it is almost unusable in this version.

Thank you.

Open/save as dialogs does not function. I have openbox wm. No compositing. Once
or twice this worked. Proper operation of dialogs not repeats.

I would never claim a possible lack of knowledge! But, in this case, I am
fairly certain it wasn't me.

I used FIND to locate the space between the date and the time. I used LEFT
to extract the characters prior to the space and when that did not produce
a numerical value, I tried both VALUE and TIMEVALUE to convert it to a
numerical value. Neither worked.

Knowing where the space between the date and the time was and determing the
LEN of the entire text string, I used MID to extract the characters
following the space. When that did not produce a numerical value, I tried
both VALUE and TIMEVALUE to convert it to a numerical value. Neither
worked.

I did not. I had already done a lot of work with the information in Excel
which I did not want to redo. I saved my work (in .xls instead of .xlsx)
and opened that in Calc.

Does Calc have issues with opening tab-delimited files?

[libreoffice-users] Thousands of donors contribute €50,000 in just eight days to The Document Foundation

2011-02-25 Thread Florian Effenberger
Thousands of donors contribute €50,000 in just eight days to The
Document Foundation

LibreOffice Community accomplishes next major milestone
Ongoing donations to support marketing, infrastructure and development

The Community around LibreOffice, the free personal productivity suite,
has accomplished the next major milestone in establishing The Document
Foundation as a legal entity. In just eight days, some 2,000 donors from
all over the world contributed €50,000 for the capital stock necessary
to set-up the legal entity in Germany.

"We still can't believe it," says Florian Effenberger, Steering
Committee member. "It happened in such a short period of time and was
beyond our wildest expectations. You all really rock! On behalf of the
Community, the Steering Committee would like to thank all the donors for
their generous support."

The €50,000 collected will form the Foundation's paid-up capital,
ensuring a permanent future for the organization after the legal
paperwork is complete, based in Germany. The capital will be frozen
assets for the Foundation: the funds cannot be spent, and we will be
able to avail just the annual interest. All money donated from now on
will actually bankroll our ongoing running costs for things such as
marketing, hardware, infrastructure, attending trade shows, initial
financing of merchandising material and, of course, developing new and
exciting ideas.

"So we still need your support: Every donation helps to pay for our
future operational running," Effenberger adds.

Details on how to donate to The Document Foundation and how the money
will be spent are available at http://challenge.documentfoundation.org

Information about LibreOffice can be found at http://www.libreoffice.org
The home of The Document Foundation is at http://www.documentfoundation.org

About The Document Foundation

The Document Foundation has the mission of facilitating the evolution of
the LibreOffice community into a new, open, independent, and
meritocratic organization over the next few months. An independent
Foundation is a better reflection of the values of our contributors,
users and supporters, and will enable a more effective, efficient and
transparent community. TDF will protect past investments by building on
the achievements of the first decade, will encourage wide participation
within the community, and will co-ordinate activity across the community.

After some experimenting it seems to me that if I set up a Writer
document to link to a csv file as its datasource it stays with
exactly that file. If I try to include new data by making a new
version of the merge file (ie, exactly the same name), I don't get
the new data, only the old data.

Have I misunderstood, or observed wrongly, somewhere?

Translanting is more than only "translating".. is makin it understandable

As a native Brazilian I contribute with traductions of LibO documentation...

2011-02-25 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)

Probably although i thought the pathnames were slightly different. However, if
you set LibreOffice to be the default for opening office files (the default is
tick in the tick-box on the final screen of the installer) then OpenOffice will
probably search for various things first in the LibreOffice folders and only
look into the OpenOffice folders if it doesn't find anything. I think you can
open OpenOffice and persuade it to be the default app again. It is odd tho as
you are the first person to notice and report the problem. I would have
expected people to mention this a few weeks ago.

Just out of curiosity and on a different subject what is the machine's cpu
speed
and ram-size? Do you have about 15Gb free space on your hard-drive? have you
considered using a linux distro so that the machine runs faster again? If not
then i might be able to help you run a free trial version of a few without
affecting your Windows at all. Please let me know if you are interested.

Tom :)

thing, though it changed all the icons for OOo 3.3.0 to the new LO icons.
Could that be because they all have the same executable file names even

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: comments are disappearing

2011-02-25 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)

I guess the detailed answer is to ask which operating system you are using;
Windows, Linux (such as Ubuntu, Edubuntu, Mint, Salix ...), BSD or Mac?

For Windows probably the best program is WinRar
http://www.win-rar.com/download.html
WinRar is available for Windows, Linux, BSD and Mac
http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
although most OSes (except Windows) probably have something built-in already.

Most of the linux distros tend to have an archive reader built-in that can read
zip format but knowing which distro would help us find the name of the archive
manager/reader.

Please see Lyudmil's answer at the bottom of this thread.

Hi,

File format descriptor (first 2 bytes) of *.docx files is PK, i.e. zip format.
Use some un-zipper (7-zip, WinRAR, ...) to extract the document tree structure.
The document contents itself is in "\word\document.xml",
and the comments are in "\docProps\core.xml".
(Use Notepad or similar, search "description".
XML-Notepad couldn't help, for me at least.)

The usual way is using

I did finally get it to install using rpm -ivh --force rpm-file-name. I
saw this in another thread basically complaining about the same thing. I

Thanks for the response. I did finally figure out the commands just the

Perhaps you know, that 3.3.1-rc2 is identical to 3.3.1 (final). And I
think this is the reason, that all (files, sizes ...) are the same.
And if both versions are the same, why should they compile and package
all packages for all architetures again only for changing ONE number?

Have a nice day.

Yes Tom

Translanting is more than only "translating".. is makin it understandable
for those who´s going to use the Suite...
As a native Brazilian I contribute with traductions of LibO documentation...
and I can say that at least in Brazilian Portuguese
the machine translators would generate a misunderstood and even strange

I´m working nowadays translanting the user guides "getting started..."
trying to make it easier and helpful for brazilian users

[libreoffice-users] Re: Calc trumps Excel

2011-02-25 Thread plino

VALUE and TIMEVALUE apply to TEXT strings ONLY both in Excel and LibO

If you want to parse a value field you have to use different functions

How did you import the Tab delimited file to LibO?

I've been using Eudora OSE for 3-4 months. But editing the orignal message
when
replying isn't all that easy, things are erased that you don't expect or want
to
erase. So, you have to back up.

When I was a Windows user, Eudora was my favorite email client, and then
Qualcomm dropped further development. I switched to Outlook.

So, now I'm trying Thunderbird, primarily because I can use it as a newsgroup
reader. But, I've not decided to go or stay with Tbird as of yet.
Ken

Hi :)
If you are looking for a light & fast email client then "Claws" might be worth
testing too. It probably doesn't have advanced functionality so it probably
won't suit Ken's requirements. Something much heavier with a load more
functionality is "Evolution" which is also free and OpenSource. I'm not sure
about Kmail as i think it needs a K Desktop Environment and i prefer the Gnome
DE.

Tom :)

I haven't done this myself yet, but here's the description from the LibO help
file:

Graphics in the Background of Cells

1. Choose Insert - Picture - From File.
2. Select the graphic and click Open.

The graphic is inserted anchored to the current cell. You can move and scale
the graphic as you want. In your context menu you can use the Arrange - To
Background command to place this in the background. To select a graphic that
has been placed in the background, use the Navigator.

I hope this helps.

The usual way is using

swriter
scalc
simpress

and so on to start the individual modules. But since you have both OOo and LibO
installed, you might want to call the app with the complete path to make sure,
that the correct one starts. Once you've done this, you could create some
aliases like owriter and lwriter to be able to differentiate between the two
software packages.

XML-Notepad couldn't help, for me at least.)

only if "OOO330m19" does mean something, and this has not changed since
the first version of LibO
and for "Build:x" there should be a reference in the download list (as
mentiond before)
