Hi :)
Please send a blank email to the address

users+h...@libreoffice.org

Note that the users+ part at the beginning is important. It doesn't matter
what you put in the subject-line. You should get an email in response that
tells you how to unsubscribe.

[libreoffice-users] RTL text in text form controls

2011-04-29 Thread amine amine
Salam,

I try to use LibO as a CRUD application and i'm using both languages Arabic
and English for my Data.

When designing a form in LibO under Linux/Ubuntu, when i choose the control
text direction for the text control, it handles pretty well the RTL
language.

Doing the same form design under WinXP it always displays text from Left to
Right weither you choose RTL or LTR text direction for the text control.

Is it a bug that i should file or am i doing it the wrong way ..?

Thank you and good luck to you all !

List unsubscribe and commands [WAS]: Re: [libreoffice-users] HTML entities

I had a hard time subscribing, and I see may people have problems using

It looks like my ISP's smtp didn't let me send emails to the
users+subscr...@libreoffice.org address. It silently disappeared (no
error email etc.). Eventually I managed to subscribe via their web-mail
thing. Same goes with the users+h...@libreoffice.org email which I just
tested and has the same problem.

In my case it seems impossible to contact my ISP to ask about the issue
and they even closed tdown the user forums.

I wonder if the '+' in the addresses may be bothering some servers?

I have been using broadband [DSL or cable modem] since the late 90's and

Now, for those people who have limited broadband transfer amounts or use
dialup, LibreOffice people should develop a list of places where you
would be able to buy a DVD. OOo use to have many location, worldwide
and in the USA. LibreOffice needs to follow that option. The NA DVD
project is nearly ready to publish its first release of a DVD. I hope
to have it available to purchase [cost of media, printing, shipping,
etc.] for the lowest price that can issued at. This type of service
would be great for those who cannot afford the time to download
LibreOffice [DVDs or software alone] via their slow access. Also, if it
is printed professionally we could have a better image for the
business market.

As for the topic of the thread, the more tutorials, documentation, and
samples, we could have on the DVD the better it would be for the user
when they have a question or just want to migrate from MSO to LibreOffice.

Feel free to sign up for the list... You can download *all* available
documentation content (including stuff that's still in the pipeline
and not yet published) from the LibreOffice Alfresco platform at
http://alfresco.libreoffice.org or
http://documentation.libreoffice.org

David Nelson

Exactly what is an Alfresco account? Why would you need to have one?

As for the Documentation List[s], I am already on 4 lists already.
Also, I do not know if I will ever contribute to the
creation/modification of any LibreOffice documentation, due to my
brain injuries. Clear communication can be a problem at times when I
deal with typing text. Three strokes will do that to a person.

As for the documentation out there, I have the latest versions of the
two available guides; Getting Started and Writer. Or at least the
ones I find at http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation/;
and the WIKI page for documentation. The LibreOffice-NA.US
http://libreoffice-na.us/ site is the testing platform for the
LibreOffice North American Community DVD Project. Our group is
creating DVDs that will service the needs of the following
communities; Canadian, US-American, Mexican, and Latin American,
including the Hispanic communities. Currently we have our English
DVDs 99% ready for publication and are working on the Spanish
language version [first draft is 50% +/- done] for those DVDs. The
big advantage with our DVDs is the extras. These include as much
documentation as we can find. Look at this link to see what we
currently have for English;
http://libreoffice-na.us/English/documentation.html

What we really need now is Spanish language documentation, even if it
is just the Getting-Started guide. Also we could use Spanish
language extensions/add-ons plus sample files. Right now there is a
big void in the Spanish language area of documentation, extensions,
templates, artwork, and sample files. THEN we have to do it all over
with our French DVDs, that are needed for French-Canada.

So the question is what is the advantage of an Alfresco account and
being on the documentation list[s]? I am on the Projects list[s],
the International Marketing list, the US Marketing list, and the
User's list. Would I really need to be on another one if I will not
be able to contribute/create/modify the document files?

and what about a video documentation?
i think that there are people on the community that would like to try
doing video learning videos and not a youtube kind of but

a more official ones.

Eliezer

I hope to collect as many videos as possible on the various topics of
using LibreOffice. Then with permission, I would like to see a movie
DVD made for viewing on a TV or computer. Digital versions are great,
but in a group setting, a TV movie might work better.

[libreoffice-users] Problems: Alphabetical Index

2011-04-29 Thread Benedetto Demaria
Hi everyone,

My name is Benedetto Demaria, I'm currently trying to make the switch from
Word 2003 to LibreOffice.
I'm on XP using LibreOffice 3.3.1 and I'm trying to make index for a
document. I have the following problems:

1. I need to get two alphabetical indexes in a Writer document:

- Index of Names
- Index of Places and Things

When I do a MS Word document I use this solution:
http://www.ehow.com/how_2314719_create-multiple-indexes-microsoft-word.html

Is there any way to do it in LibreOffice?

2. The Insert Index Entry dialog box does not accept character formatting
(only special characters).
It seems impossible to format the text that appears in the index entry, how
instead MS Word does.
http://www.word-2010.com/insert-an-index-in-microsoft-word-2010/
How can I keep character formatting (subscript, superscript, italic, bold,
etc) to specific entries not related to a style?

Any help is much appreciated.
Kind regards,

Benedetto--

Writer, sorry.  I want to have the bottom edge of the page number at a
particular, consistent location on every page.  I can get it to set
the top edge easily enough, but I can't figure out how to get it to
 work for the bottom edge.

 -Todd

I was able to set the page number location by using tab stops and
tabbing the number to the stop.

My method was to Insert then Footer and accept default
 Then Insert Page Number

I think that got it to work, but I wish there was an option to do it
automatically.

[libreoffice-users] new article about Ubuntu 11.4 - has info about LibreOffice

2011-04-29 Thread webmaster for Kracked Press Productions

Below is a quote from ZDnet article about Ubuntu 11.4 and Unity.
The brief text about LibreOffice is nice and concise about LibreOffice's
advantage over OOo.

What you need to know about the new Ubuntu

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/open-source/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-ubuntu/8760?pg=2tag=mantle_skin;content

quote
LibreOffice, for example, is faster than OpenOffice but has the exact
same command set and interface. In addition, it also does a better job
with Microsoft Office 2007 and up document formats. That makes
LibreOffice an excellent choice for working with people who are still
using Microsoft Office products.

I'm a brazilian member of the list. We have our own brazilian lists and we

My English is terrible, but I don´t refuse in helping people if I can.

Timi, I'm really sorry if you´re disappointed about the list but the

My two cents.
We could have a direct instruction for those who wants to unsubscribe like.

Re: [libreoffice-users] users+confunsub... Improvements needed

On 28/04/11 4:05 AM, Michel Gagnon wrote:

I think the proper users-unsubscribe... address should be written in the

Except with this list there are three different versions, so people
receiving the digest wouldn't be able to use it.

Another problem I have lived not too long ago: I wanted to
unsubscribe from one of the list. The confirmation reply came about
2 hours later... except I was sleeping at 1:00 a.m. So I did not
reply to the confirm message until the day after. So my unsubscribe
command was rejected because I did not reply in a timely manner.

Nasty, most lists I've seen usually have a timeout period of two or
three days to avoid just that. A two hour (or less) window is
ridiculous since SMTP can have delays far longer than that.

 Welcome improvements would be:
 – the same command should be used for the Digest and NoMail versions

Some mailing list software allows for this (e.g. Mailman and Sympa),
but the software used for this list doesn't.

 – immediate reaction by the server

This list does have that from the moment the confirmation is received,
as do most lists.

 – unsubscription should happen ASAP, without any need to
confirm. The worst case scenario would be someone who (is)
unsubscribed by error: that person would simply need to resubscribe.

This would be a *very* bad idea. It is way too simple to spoof an
email address and with a configuration like that every single person
known to be subscribed (i.e. every person who posts) could be
unsubscribed by someone else. As the behaviour of confirmation
messages is (usually) global, then the reverse would be true and
people could be arbitrarily subscribed by an unknown party.

The whole purpose of a confirmation message is to prevent nefarious
individuals from making changes to the receipt, or lack thereof, of
another person's correspondence.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Gun fight at the LibO coral

2011-04-29 Thread Bruce Summitt
It was not my intent to start a fight as the term Gunfight suggests,
though I expected this outcome. I regret having stepped on the toes of
proprietary fundamentalists. But I am not the one who threw the first swing.

It is my experience that those most willing to fight have never had to take
it to its final conclusion. I have. It is not pretty nor fun. It is serious
business.

People all have issues with all manner of things. However, flying off the
handle and attacking a group of people who are trying to help over a group
of people who can't slow down long enough to follow the instructions that
were given to solve their issue is hardly constructive.

I don't know the answer to your mp3 issue. I've never had the need to
perform your desired task. I'd like to learn. But I don't care anything
about reading a temper tantrum tirade because someone didn't get what they
wanted when they wanted it. Good will is in such short supply today because
people abuse it.

I wish now that I had continued my long standing practice of laughing at
such behavior and moving on. I have always wondered why those who lash out
at others object when they are responded to in kind. It boggles the mind!

Corporations and those who support them are the makers of war. Just ask one
of the most highly decorated US Marines, Smedley
Butlerhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smedley_Butler.
He stated that as a Marine he was little more than a thug for corporate
domination. But that is another story. Suffice it to say that I would work
with people over corporations any day. After all, corporations merely steal
from people and then charge other people for it!

I monitor these lists in hopes of actually learning something. I realize
that I might actually have to think, think for myself, and DO something. But
I get satisfaction from doing it and from doing it myself. And I appreciate
any community help that I might receive along the way.

And I have another issue here as well: it is Summitt, just as I spelled it.
It's an American Civil War thing. (And I'm sure I know my own name better
than you). But that, too, would be a history lesson and I don't think that
any of us are here for that.

I will not disrupt this list again. If you or anyone else wish to attack me
again for your having first attacked this list, I will simply unsubscribe (I
know how to) and come back another day. This list is here to help; not to
suffer the insults of imbeciles. I don't really need the list anyway. I
manage just fine. I can always learn. And I can try to help. But I can learn
elsewhere and NOT help those who only wish to war.

I am so happy that LO forked from Oracle. And I thank the community, too.
But I'll no longer bicker with takers who only give back insults and injury.
I CAN. I just choose not to.

Have a nice day.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Gun fight at the LibO coral

2011-04-29 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
There is more complexity than is obvious here. Timi has asked for help a
number
of times and not been helped with getting sound working in Impress.

He wants to use LO but is blocked and no-one is helping him. He is afraid that
he will have to return to MSO because apparently no-one knows how to get sound
links working in Impress. Perhaps it can't be done. Perhaps Impress
presentations can't have sound at all in any format.

This involves a loss of face for him. His work colleagues say he was a fool
for
trying OpenSource but he has put a lot of time effort into getting it
working. Because Impress doesn't work with sound at all (apparently) he has to
return to using PowerPoint which is slow. People who advertise OpenSource
often
claim it is faster and that support is better but to him and his colleagues the
opposite has been proven and Timi will suffer for that but so will LO.

So far while Timi came here asking for help quite a long time ago now all that
the community has done is to either ignore him or attack him, even bully him,
but certainly not help him.

Our documentation team is very tiny with most of the work being done by only
about 4 people. Even in OOo there is very little documentation about Impress
but our documentation team is trying to get around to working on it. They do
have other, more urgent priorities tho.

So, this whole situation, each part of it, is not the fault of any 1
individual
but has been an unfortunate combination.

Regards from
Tom :)

it to its final conclusion.

Salam,

I try to use LibO as a CRUD application and i'm using both languages Arabic
and English for my Data.

When designing a form in LibO under Linux/Ubuntu, when i choose the control
text direction for the text control, it handles pretty well the RTL
language.

Doing the same form design under WinXP it always displays text from Left to
Right whether you choose RTL or LTR text direction for the text control.

Is it a bug that i should file or am i doing it the wrong way ..?

Thank you and good luck to you all !

Re: [libreoffice-users] exported PDF file size

2011-04-29 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I tend to save pictures in 3 different formats to see which gives the best
result for the least size. I would always keep a copy of the original.

Gif tends to be about 1/10th the size of jpgs or pngs but it doesn't work well
on smoothly changing shades so some of the pictures on pages 15, 17, 19, 20,
26,
57, 79, 81, 111, 116, 120, 127, 135, 136 and 139 might not work well but all
the
rest will probably be better as gifs.

To change formats in Ubuntu just install gimp

sudo apt-get install gimp

and use Save As ... the change the file-ending from .jpg (for example) to
.gif. Sometimes png is lighter-weight or sometimes jpg although usually those
2
formats tend to be better for photos. Png tends to be higher quality than jpg
but it is also often lighter-weight. Not always tho which is why i try all 3
before committing myself to 1.

Note that just changing the format of an image can cause it to degrade a bit or
even a lot and changing the entire document to pdf can cause further errors to
creep into images. At the moment all your images looked fine to a quick
squint
test.

Do you have all the separate images available to work from? Can you create a
new folder for testing different formats?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Does this sound loss occur during creation of the presentation in the

(b) Impress can't convert to .xls without all icon to sound file links being
removed/destroyed.

Can't understand the purpose of using impress to created a spreadsheet
file? Would be more interesting to know if audio data is lost when
impress is saved as calc file. Does this occur?

Hopeless as a business tool (at least under XP system). May shock you but many
people
world wide use MS powerpoint and some of us have to communicate.

If your customer/colleague using m$, continue to use m$ yourself. Only
consider to use LO if your recipient is equally willing to try LO as
well. No point sending content in DVD if your recipient is able to
view only CD-ROM...

With all your apparent background surely you could encourage someone to stick
a filter into
the forum that diverts un-subscribe to somewhere else...

Not a forum, but a mailing list; anyway, suggest using digest-mode subscription.

Service delivery is why people get attracted to products.. or is that

If I understand you, you are basically saying that if something is freeware
such as LibO then
don't bitch if it screws up.. fine if it were a file converter or
something but when you enter
the commerical world (office products) then be prepared for trades
description issues..

This is weak; conversely, you should be writing to m$ to complain that
m$ word is unable to open an open document format file without data
loss, as an example.

There are many websites promoting Impress as an alternative to powerpoint
if so then
ensure that statement is correct and that Impress can give powerpoint a good
hiding which I
for one would support and even pay for if it was better I said if!

I am at risk of abusing this forum as this type of discussion should be

maybe re-direct and we can get to the bottom of this... unless you've gone

BTW I do pay MS their licence fee's... I'd also pay for Impress if it were

have to agree the instructons you get with each mail (above) are a little
cryptic, so ... since you're now using the nntp I'll say this:

Using the same e-mail address you joined the mailing list from, send an
email to the address users+hel... in the top line and put unsubscribe in
the body. If it doesn't need the unsubscribe it's my understanding it will
be ignored.

If this is wrong, someone correct me. I happen to side with the questioners
on this one: there's the address (in a format some might not be able to use
because of the + sign if they have very old mail clients) and there is
nothing about leaving everythinig else blank or putting unsubscrbe in the
body or whatever.
This poster whould have been specific about what he tried and what didn't
work, and the responders should have more to says than a terse go read it.
Only the e-mal receving the mail list can be used to unsubscribe you.

HTH,

Twayne`

Re: [libreoffice-users] exported PDF file size

2011-04-29 Thread Daniel A. Rodriguez

I think the only thing that can make an effective difference is ro reduce
JPG compression and the image resolution in the PDF Options screen
But you should test some different values to find out one setup that fits
your needs and keep your images readable.

tried that but snapshots become unreadable, too blurry even with 95% quality
compression ratio

Re: [libreoffice-users] exported PDF file size

2011-04-29 Thread Daniel A. Rodriguez

 Hi :)
I tend to save pictures in 3 different formats to see which gives the best
result for the least size. I would always keep a copy of the original.

Gif tends to be about 1/10th the size of jpgs or pngs but it doesn't work
 well
on smoothly changing shades so some of the pictures on pages 15, 17, 19,
 20, 26,
 57, 79, 81, 111, 116, 120, 127, 135, 136 and 139 might not work well but
 all the
rest will probably be better as gifs.

To change formats in Ubuntu just install gimp

I've got it

and use Save As ... the change the file-ending from .jpg (for example)
 to
.gif. Sometimes png is lighter-weight or sometimes jpg although usually
 those 2
formats tend to be better for photos. Png tends to be higher quality than
 jpg
but it is also often lighter-weight. Not always tho which is why i try all
 3
 before committing myself to 1.

Note that just changing the format of an image can cause it to degrade a
 bit or
even a lot and changing the entire document to pdf can cause further errors
 to
creep into images. At the moment all your images looked fine to a quick
 squint
 test.

Do you have all the separate images available to work from? Can you create
 a
new folder for testing different formats?

will play with that

thanks

Have made it into a zip file that would decrease the file and should not
 affect the file quality.

even using tar.bz2 format compression there's no a significant difference in
resulting size

Re: [libreoffice-users] exported PDF file size

2011-04-29 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
If the quick test with gifs seems to be fairly good you might be able to
clean-up some of the images a bit to remove the wobbly waves that jpg format
introduces. Getting back to sharp edges and distinct corners, removing
speckling can get file-sizes down a little bit more but the main change happens
with the change of format ime.
Regards from
Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] Installing on win7 and importing documents from old xp hard drive

2011-04-29 Thread newbiewin7
Hi there.

I don't know if this has been discussed before but I have one question about
this software. I have problems bringing in .doc files from word programs
from my old xp system hard drive onto the new computer which is running a 64
bit win7 system. I refuse to pay for a product key to activate the new word
on the new system and am wondering if this software will allow me to import
the files from my old hard drive and open them on the new computer in libre
office?
Any help and suggestions are more than welcome.--

LibreOffice does an excellent job of accurately opening *.doc files. I
use it all time on *.doc files. It will also save in the *.doc format.

have to agree the instructons you get with each mail (above) are a little
cryptic, so ... since you're now using the nntp I'll say this:

snip

Does that mean that the unsubscribe instructions finally work? I've
been kind of out of all this for a while, but the last time I looked
in on this issue, it wasn't working. I had a second email address
subscribed, and I had to send a personal email to Florian before I
could get unsubscribed - manually by Florian.

I don't want to unsub again, and I don't want the hassle of
subscribing a new email address and then not being able to unsub it
again, just to test.

Does anyone know for sure?

As for the rest (insults to FOSS, etc.), if you don't like it, don't
use it. It's not like you have to pay for it

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice 64 bit Impress issues

2011-04-29 Thread Rob Cachia

I have a PowerPoint presentation that runs fine in Libreoffice Impress.

If I save it as a odp file it simply will not open. It starts to open
then hangs. I was running 3.3.2

If open LibreOffice first and open the odp presentation it runs fine.

I have tried downloading and running the latest version 3.3.2

All the files say amd64 and I am running an Intel 5.
Same thing happened would not open the odp format.

I downloaded and installed it from the synaptic and found that the same
thing happened. I find it interesting that when open the About
LibreOffice under help does not tell me whether I am running 32bit
64bit LibreOffice.

I still have OpenOffice on my 32bit machines and have not tried
LibreOffice on them.

It seems strange to me that I have more options in Powerpoint format
(ppt or pps) and cannot run this presentation on LibreOffice in its
native format.
